A Million Little Choices is a book that follows a dual timeline. The majority of the book takes place in the present with Claire, who has just moved cross-country with her husband, Stephen. This move is the last thing Claire wanted, after having some issues in their marriage.

They move to an old, big, historical home that has a lot of history. In 1863, Charlotte Thursmann is in a horrific second marriage after her first husband passed. She’s pregnant, and the only person she has is an enslaved woman in her home. We get Charlotte’s story through a diary that Claire finds buried in the old home.

This story was emotional and brought me to tears once or twice. I felt for Claire, and it broke my heart seeing what she was going through, but by God’s grace, everything worked out for her.

I read this in almost one sitting… I was sadly interrupted because apparently humans need sleep to function and work to survive. 🙄 How unfortunate that we can’t dedicate every hour of every day to reading wonderful books… but I digress.

WOW! I was so emotionally invested in this story and in the characters’ griefs, trials, pain, but also their joys and victories. I loved every minute spent reading this book. That’s saying a lot as I’m not a big contemporary fan. The way Tamera Alexander seamlessly weaves realistic faith - with all its ups and downs, sin and repentance, doubt and belief - through her novels without being preachy has always left me feeling so encouraged and truly touched. I loved the way she dealt with the difficult topics of marital infidelity and the loss of a child among others. What a poignant story; it’s one I will not soon forget! 4.5/5 stars

I’d round this up to 2.5 stars. The story itself was fine - the pacing was off at the beginning, but it picked up. The ending is too neat. My main issue is how we go from a “near-affair,” to an ultimatum to move across country, to buying a house without consulting your spouse AND not understanding it’s a style she hates, then actually sleeping with the women of the “near-affair” and then everything is fixed with a few meetings with a Christian councilor. Nope. Not buying it. You don’t undo years of hurt and terrible communication in two weeks. You can chose to start a road to reconciliation, but it’s not going to be all fixed immediately. Also, I didn’t appreciate the subtle, “you never forgave him for your son dying so the cheating is mostly your fault” ideology that slid in there, along with the idea that spending time with a man who is not your husband is always dangerous. Claire and Stephen are not partners in their marriage and the novel constantly reinforced the idea that if Claire just follows God, God will make Stephen a better husband, which is not surprising since this is published by focus on the family. Basically, this book is full of conservative, traditional views on marriage that while might work for some, they have been proven to be dangerous for others.

I am undone. Totally. This book will be a New York Times best seller. It just will. The pages are written with beauty, heartache, pain, and love. The choices we make here on earth have an impact, not only now but for eternity. I will be thinking and reflecting on the impact this book has made on me for a very long time. I loved this book. From the first page until the very end. I have tears in my eyes right now just thinking about it. The characters, the dual timeline, and the story are remarkable.

Mrs. Alexander has written a masterpiece. If I never meet this author this side of heaven, I'll be hunting her down in glory to say, "Well done." I pray all who reads this book will draw closer to Jesus.

From the very beginning, I was completely absorbed in the book. It's ideal for those who enjoy stories with two timelines that showcase two women who are distinct but also alike, tied together by a shared experience of betrayal and hope, across more than a century and a half. The main focus of the book is on choices. The important and nuanced decisions we make every day have the ability to enhance or harm our lives.

Claire's life is turned upside down when her beloved husband admits to a “near affair.”... When her husband accepts a partnership with an Atlanta law firm, Claire agrees to move in an effort to heal their fractured marriage. but she is shocked to discover that he has bought a house, sight unseen, without consulting her first. Wow, what a book.

I started this book because @lasting.joy.reads recommended it to us on one of our posts. I was not expecting to love it this much, and tbh I’ve never read an adult fiction book published by Focus on the Family. Who knew they even had that option?

This book really does cover some super heavy topics, so be prepared if you read it.
Things like:
• Child loss
• Adultery
• Divorce
• Slavery
• Abuse

The first half of the book focuses on the MC and her husband’s failing marriage. As they move to ATL, they buy a home that was once owned by a slave owner. The second half takes you through that story, the slaves and their bond with the owner’s wife. Two POVs in the same house, wow.

I wasn’t expecting the story to make me cry or be as emotional as I was.

This book has STRONG Gospel themes. STRONG themes of redemption that pointed to Jesus every time. I was floored by how it was woven in without feeling cheesy.

I highly, highly recommend this book to EVERYONE. You will be so thankful you read it.

Wow this book hits hard.

I know Tamera's going to get negative reviews because the couple experiencing marital issues ends up together instead of divorcing. However, while I have never gone through the issues this couple experiences before (or the trauma that the main character in the historical timeline faces), I do believe she treated these topics with a lot of grace and care. The statistics show divorce is highly prevalent even in Christian churches. This topic needs to be talked about more in a biblical light and that's what Tamera does in A Million Little Choices .

While I applaud Tamera for talking about such hard topics, I also struggled a bit with characterization + plot. I think it comes down to a bit too much going on for just one book. There was plenty in the contemporary timeline for a book on its own. We didn't get to see much of Stephen's personal growth, or the growth in the relationship, how any of the communication issues were resolved, etc. This was from the contemporary timeline only. Then to bring in the heaviness of the historical timeline felt a bit much to this reader. However, it is a much-needed spiritual fiction novel in a world of fluff, which I do appreciate.

As mentioned, there are a lot of hard topics discussed in this book. Infidelity and domestic abuse are the biggest. While this shouldn't keep you away from reading the book (it is so so good and much needed in this culture), it might be triggering. So read with some caution.

- domestic/sexual abuse -> to be honest, I was more involved with the contemporary timeline so I skimmed much of the historical so I can't give an accurate description of the abuse.

Oh my, my heart is full. Tamera Alexander has woven two stories into one brilliant masterpiece.

As far as I know, this is Tamera Alexander's first dip into a dual timeline story and I absolutely loved it. She took an unusual approach in that the two storylines don't continuously alternate, developing at the same pace. It is mostly a contemporary story, however the story in the past has a profound impact upon the main character in the contemporary storyline.

Two women, separated by centuries, face heartbreak and pain, but realize that the many choices we make in life, have an impact for eternity. I found this story to be heartbreaking. It is a compelling story of the power of redemption and grace. Readers will be drawn into their story, until the last page has been read.

You know it is a book for the keeper shelf, when you think about the book and its message after the last page has been read. Even though I finished the story a day ago, I am still thinking about the story, finding its message compelling. Highly recommend!

This was a fantastic book! I actually picked this up and started reading without knowing there was a dual timeline. And oh man, the direction this book took with that dual timeline! Claire and Stephen have been married several years when life starts taking some twists and turns. Some decisions are made that leave Claire feeling like her world has been upended. She tries to grasp for a shred of faith, when things seem to get even worse. In the midst of her world falling apart, she finds secrets that end up changing the course of her path.

I don't want to give anything away about the secrets that were found or the dual time line but will say, my heart was pulled into these scenes and I found myself unable to read at times due to the tears in my eyes. Heavy and emotional. This was my first book by this author and I really loved her writing style so much! I'mgoing to dig into Goodreads to see if she has any books where the main story line is similar to the historical one in this book.

I enjoyed the two women's friendships (Clarie/Bernice) and (Charlotte/Nettie). The lives of four women, more than 150 years apart, converge. I was intrigued more by the historical past perspective than the contemporary present. I enjoyed the journal and the dedication and wisdom of her life, honoring the memory of those enslaved by the horrible tragedies. (reminding you of the Underground Railroad).

A MILLION LITTLE CHOICES is a captivating, compelling, and redemptive story as the characters work toward healing and faith.

The author explores choices we make every day that lead to consequences, both good and bad. We all have choices we make every day. Make them count. I enjoyed the EPILOGUE in Buckhead, Atlanta (where I have previously lived).

An inspiring story of marriage, forgiveness, hope, infidelity, grace, trust, faith, healing, and choices that matter infused with Biblical scriptures. A plantation home connects the two timelines; previously owned by Charlotte Thursmann before and during the Civil War, and current day purchased by Stephen Powell who recently relocated to Atlanta from Colorado. The house had been added to the national register of historic places, but the Civil War owners left little of historic value for historians.

During a particularly dramatic moment Claire Powell accidentally crashed something through one of the walls, which opened up into a hidden room. The items in this discovery lead to an amazing historical find.

Most of the story focused on the characters in the more current timeline. Claire and Stephen had some serious problems. To tell the truth, I didn’t care for either character much. Marital issues can cause some unattractive qualities to emerge. And emerge they did. I especially didn’t like Stephen. I completely sided with Claire, and Ms. Alexander did such an amazing job telling that story and getting into the minds of each character. Some really great arguments. I’m so glad I was wrong about where I assumed this was leading, since Ms. Alexander had a much wiser way to go.

The story during the Civil War was about Charlotte and Lettie arranging "train tickets" as they called it, using a false room to store up to 17 slaves for transport north. What an amazing story. And what an amazing connection 2019 characters had with the 1863 owners of this house!

I have to say, I think this is the first book I’ve read by Tamera Alexander that was dual timeline instead of just historical. And boy! Is she good at it! Of the many I’ve read by this author, I honestly think this was my favorite. Tough storylines, but sooooo good.

Narrator Erin Bennett did such a good job narrating this book. Her southern accents and non-southern accents, her male characters, and black men and women…masterful!

I don’t often re-read books, only ones I felt a connection with, or thoroughly enjoyed. But, I’m actually looking forward to reading this a second time.

Overall, I enjoyed Alexander's foray into contemporary women's fiction. I've enjoyed her historical romances, and was curious how she would do in this genre.

💍This book deals with some very heavy topics, at the forefront of which is a failing marriage, and underlying trauma due to the death of a child. There is also an abusive relationship in the historic timeline.

💍This is a dual timeline, with the historic storyline set in the antebellum South, which is Alexander's wheelhouse. That storyline was really only a thread woven into the overall story and wasn't fully fleshed out as a separate story, which I actually enjoyed. People who don't generally like dual timelines might like this one because the historic one doesn't play as big of a role.

💍Personally, I feel like Tamera Alexander handled these tough issues with grace and balance. I love the redemptive arc of the storyline, and I would love to see more books like this. Is every marriage saved? No. CAN every marriage be saved? I don't think so, not every time. But is redemption in a broken marriage possible? Absolutely, and I would enjoy more stories where this happens.

Wow. This book completely wrecked me, and I'm sure it will stick with me for quite awhile. I was completely engrossed from the very beginning, making it hard to put it down. It wasn't an easy read with the subjects of brokenness, betrayal, infidelity and abuse. But the pages are also filled with faith, wisdom, and forgiveness that will keep you turning the pages. It is so well written. You will feel the struggles and pain of the characters, and you will rejoice with them. I've read almost all of this author's books, and I have to say, this is her best one yet.

I really enjoyed A Little Million Choices. It’s a marriage-in-crisis story that follows a couple on the brink of divorce, grappling with resentment, miscommunication, and the slow drift that can happen over time. Plus, it touches on infedity.

Then there's the compelling discovery of a forgotten diary from someone who once lived in their Southern home.

The book weaves in a touch of a second timeline through the diary, but the heart of the story firmly stays in the present. I appreciated the balance between the past and the modern storyline without overwhelming it. The struggles that the author of the diary goes through adds a lot of depth to the story.

This is an emotional story about choices. Even the small, everyday ones that shape a marriage, and the bigger ones that can either break it apart or bring healing. Thoughtful and heartfelt, it’s a story about rediscovering connection, understanding, and the possibility of starting again.

What an incredible story! The author does an excellent job of weaving two different timelines into one powerful story. Her ability to describe the heartache and pain experienced by infidelity in a marriage made my heart hurt right along with Claire’s.
The way she intertwines Charlotte’s journey with Claire’s story is just brilliant! I also loved the historical aspects she brought into the book.
The faith and redemption in this story was just amazing! This book has incredible depth and was such an inspiration to me and my walk with Christ.

Tamera Alexander is one of my favorite historical authors, so I was excited and quite curious to see what she would write in a contemporary setting. She has proven once again she is an extraordinary author no matter the genre! 5 magnificent stars!
I don't normally rank a book 5 stars if it causes too much anxiety. Make no mistake A Million Little Choices starts out with quite a bit of angst and the reader has a ringside seat to how the lives of Claire and Stephen Powell unravel and go terribly wrong. By a third of the way through, I'm wondering what I had gotten myself into as this is not what I normally enjoy reading. But I implore readers to stay the course as the story becomes something else altogether and I ended up reading the book in less than 24 hours. It was worth the discomfort to get to the heart of the story.

A Million Little Choices is Southern fiction at its finest. Relationship struggles and infidelity are dealt with in a realistic and ultimately compassionate way. It's also a dual timeline and Claire is strengthened and spellbound as she discovers another woman's plight who lived more than 150 years before. There are innumerable quotes worthy of mentioning but I'll let readers uncover these jewels for themselves and just say the most profound truth is this,

"Live like you're looking back from the threshold of eternity." What a thought-provoking truth to ponder!

This story immediately drew me in. I could feel the pain of the characters, could see where the problems were happening and yet totally understood how/why they'd reached that point. The history and surprises in the old house they move into were fascinating as well. I loved the way past touched present and brought healing. All the way through about 3/4 I was ready to rate this a solid 5 stars and I almost did, but I felt like so so much of the story was spent on the breakdown of the marriage and mistakes of the husband that I wanted to see more resolution at the end. We got to see the wife's journey and that was satisfying (and beautiful) and the end result was very satisfying and glorifying to God (which I LOVED) but I felt like we didn't get to see enough of what happened with the husband and I really, really wanted to see that.

This book was a fantastic read and I immediately went to go look for more from this author. Her writing style is captivating and authentic, I would definitely recommend.

What a beautiful book! Full of betrayal and heartache...and redemption and hope! I would definitely recommend for any and all!

It has been a long time since a book has affected me like this one did. I had a hard time with it for a short while in the beginning because of the difficult topic but I'm so glad I kept reading because this story was beyond amazing! I've never read anything by Tamera Alexander but I'll be reading them all now!

Claire Powell and her husband are working through his "almost an affair" when he accepts a position in Atlanta without consulting Claire. She has a thriving business of her own, but feels led by God to go with Stephen to Atlanta. Then he buys a mansion on 27 acres without getting Claire's input. I was definitely not feeling the love for Stephen at the beginning of the novel.

What captivates Claire and seems to keep her anchored is discovering a journal from 1863 written by prior owner Charlotte Thursmann and her mother like figure Nettie. This part of the novel was riveting.

Lots of wonderful messages in the pages. One of those was that God puts people (sometimes strangers) together for a purpose. If we can only invest a bit of time and learn what the purpose is.

Excellent job by the narrator Erin Bennett.

Deep hurts caused by infidelity, long-term grief, racism, and war, backdropped by hope and redemption through God's love and grace, catapult A Million Little Choices to a spot on my favorites list. A must-read for anyone who appreciates compelling, real-life issues undergirded with a strong spiritual element.

Kudos to this accomplished Historical author for penning a contemporary story with realistic characters whose decisions are shaped by characters and circumstances from the past, all while bringing the reader to a satisfying conclusion.
