The Mormon Secret

Rate this book
When an ancient artifact with no apparent monetary value is stolen from Brigham Young University’s campus, Associate Dean of Religion Emma Worthington and Iraq war veteran Steve Call are flung into a race, against those who want to hurt the Mormon Church, to find and protect a long-ago submerged secret. The artifact contains four strange symbols. Using a parable handed down by Prophets Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, Emma and Steve travel across the United States to follow the trail of clues left behind. With professional killers shadowing their every move, Emma’s church history knowledge and Steve’s military skills are fully tested in the ultimate race of good versus evil.

This was quite a page turner. It made me want to keep reading. I did think the romance took off way to quickly and seemed implausible. Maybe some people like that, but ... . The hunt for artifacts was a bit fun and tying it into the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was interesting. It took some creativity to come up with that. Well written too.

Trigger Warnings: war stories

I received a free copy of this book from the editor/publisher and agreed to post an honest review.

This book drove me batty and I'll get to why in a moment. It was a Da Vinci Code style treasure hunt thriller a'la Mormonism. The thriller part was decent, although some of the ways they obtain the clues seem a bit far fetched but I'll grant that for a fiction novel. Let's classify it as fantasy or sci-fi and move on. The writing was good and the background into Mormonism was explained well enough along the way so that someone treading in unfamiliar waters could keep up without much effort. I will say, however, that sometimes the narrators voice switched back and forth like a hot potato. It was usually clarified so you could always know who was speaking but there were a few times I had to reread entire sections to figure out the voice.
And then...The relationship between the two protagonists was ridiculous. Steve was recently divorced...it had been a year they said. But in his descriptions of his feelings of growing attraction towards Emma he talks about how it's been "so long" since he was with a woman. I realize a year may feel like "so long" sometimes, but it's really, really not. And as they hook up along their journey they fall madly in love with each other and simply cannot live without one another. It's been a handful of days, little early for the L word if you ask me. It just irked me. I hate fluffy romances. I expect higher quality love content from novels and was pretty disappointed.

A Mormon Dan Brown Mystery

This novel was written in mold of Dan Brown's Robert Langdon and his search for various treasures and saving the world. It is not a bad plot idea. as obviously Dan Brown and assorted others quite well. The difference being Robert Langdon saves the world from one potential disaster or another. In this book the Mormon Church or the Salt Lake Latter Day Saints is the one rescued. Judge for yourself how well the author has to achieve her goals in this novel.

Exciting read!

I really enjoyed reading this story. No fowl language and there was plenty of suspense to keep me going to the next page. Good ending too.
