A Spark in the Shadows is the first book in a duology that will captivate you with dark allure, shadow magic, and pulse-pounding twists. If you're drawn to morally grey, irresistible males, fierce feminine power, and the seductive pull of vampire lore, this is your next obsession.
Olwyn has spent her life hidden away, kept from the world by her parents, who told her she was special—a dangerous weapon, a pawn in a witches prophecy. When she’s ripped from her sheltered life and forced to marry Altair, the ruthless vampire king, she’s thrust into a world she didn’t know existed.
Altair is haunted by a dark past and driven by a desperate need to protect his kingdom. His marriage to Olwyn is meant to keep her safe, to shield her from the power that others would kill to control. But when her dormant magic begins to awaken—powerful and volatile—Altair realises he may have taken on more than he bargained for.
Thrown into a world of political intrigue and danger, Olwyn must confront the truth about her heritage and the powerful magic that lies dormant within her. As she fights to control the power she never wanted, she finds herself caught between three powerful her enigmatic husband, Altair, her personal guard, Iolas, who would throw away his loyalty for her, and the terrifying king Casius.
But as tensions rise between the vampire and human realms, Olwyn’s power may be the key to either saving or destroying everything. With enemies closing in from all sides, and her heart torn between desire and duty, Olwyn must decide who she can trust—before her choices ignite a war that could consume the entire kingdom.
Will Olwyn become the queen she was meant to be, or a pawn in a game of monsters?

3.5🌟I will continue this series as it had a lot of things I loved - vampires, an arranged marriage and hidden powers. I did feel the pacing was a bit slow and I wanted more world building but I did love the dynamics between the MCs. Thank you to the author for this ARC opportunity
Tropes: ✨Why Choose ✨Enemies to Lovers ✨Slow Burn ✨One Horse/One Bed Scene ✨Arranged Marriage ✨ Forced Proximity ✨ Secrets ✨ Banter and Spice ✨Touch her/him and 💀 ✨ He falls first and hard
How is every book Gem writes better than the last. I was hooked from the start and don’t think I’ve ever messaged an author so much while reading. It was that good.
Olwyn is such a fun FMC. She is a character that grows so much throughout the book but never looses who she considering everything that’s thrown at her along the way. Shes sweet and sassy and so open despite everything.
Altair is our newest shadow daddy and King of Noctura. He’s dark and intense but underneath the exterior he’s protective and will do anything for Olwyn. He also calls her ‘my wife’.🥺
Iolas, damn I love him so much. He’s Olwyns guard and their dynamic is so fun. It’s full of banter and affection. He’s a safe place for her to land after every blow. I love these twos stolen moments when the tension creeps up on them. There and gone so fast but so impactful. He’s also a 6 foot 7 hunk.😍
Casius our second vampire king and the stories villain. We only get a small amount of time with Casius and he’s sarcastic and cold. He’s one huge mind game wrapped up in a handsome package. I can’t wait to see the dynamic between Olwyn and Casius more.
This book is full of tension and action. We’re navigating bombshells and twists the whole book. It’s easy to get hooked. I can’t wait for the next book. My only wish was for a bit more world building as the glimpses we got made me fall in love.
Thank you so much Gem for letting me be part of your arc team again. If you could find a way to make Iolas real I’d really appreciate it😂
Okay, so where do I start? How do I put my thoughts into words when I am left speechless at this brilliant piece of work?
By the way, this review is spoiler-heavy 😅
I am simply in LOVE! I usually do not bookmark passages in a book, but this time, I had several!
The story, the world, the characters. So incredibly well done!
When we first get introduced to Altair, I'm all 😍🥵 instantly. And he's introduced with an Oh.!!!! I knew then I was done for. I mean, who in their right minds does not like a broody, tall, dark, and handsome vampire king?
"But I know beautiful things can still be weapons, like a polished blade hidden in velvet."
Such words of wisdom right there 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
"The only way out of a storm is through it."
I was like YAS QUEEN!! Right here. Love the moment of getting your shit together and pushing through.
Then Dazeem happened. And Altair chose that moment to get back. I had a huge grin plastered on my face as Altair served him his punishment 😈
"Freedom isn’t always about leaving. It’s about knowing you have the choice to stay.”
Ailith for president! Seriously, I need more of her. She's the voice of wisdom in that friendship trio (the ladies always are, aren't we 😉🤣)
“Very well,” I say, though my voice is strained. “He may live.”
I loved the banter through the whole book. But that line there had me cackling! A jealous Altair who can't rip apart the other dude because he was good to Olwyn is top notch!
I thoroughly enjoyed the banter between Olwyn and Altair. The two of them are so easy to like! Especially when they went back and forth like that. And then you have Iolas, the playful one with a heart of gold. But he'd absolutely burn the world for Altair and Olwyn. And would do it while smiling 🥰
I absolutely adored how Iolas kept teasing Olwyn through the whole story. He's such a sweetheart! ❤️
“If you find yourself craving a touch a little less gentle,” I say, my voice dropping to a low growl, “you need only ask.”
Excuse me I need to go melt there in a corner for a moment 😍
And then they bond over books 🥹 that was so sweet!
I feel the relationship developed in such an organic way. Though when Iolas made his feelings known I was yelling at my screen. I know it's a why choose and I was looking forward to it, but at the same time I was worried Altair would catch them red handed 🤣 though it wasn't possible to hide their scents off each other, soooo.. oopsie? 🤣 I think Altair took it pretty well 🤣
“Well,” I mumble, “maybe you should work harder to be funnier.”
Olwyn’s one liners are simply on point! 🤣🤣
The story progresses and I keep falling in love with these characters and the storyline. And then, my all-time favourite trope happens and I absolutely needed a cold shower then.
Altair gets shot by arrows.
Nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing gets me as excited when reading as much as MMC getting hurt and then FMC trying to save him. 🥵🥵🥵🥵 and he keeps on trying to protect here WHILE HE'S INJURED!! My little heart can't handle it 😍😍😍 it was so beautifully written! I believe I read that scene a few more times before I finally managed to continue 😅
“Touch her and I’ll rip the air from your lungs before you can take another breath.”
*fans self* he's severely injured and yet threatens to off them all. LOVE IT!!!!
The story keeps building up and then we're slapped in the face just as Olwyn had been when we find out the truth about her heritage. And the fact that her vampire besties at school happened to be the same ones she's been living with now? I mean, I kinda knew that in the beginning when Olwyn noticed Altair's eye colors, and when (also around the beginning) Altair declares that he's been looking for her and had finally found her. But when the confession finally happened, I was still shocked lol 😆
And just when you think things should be going well, Casius shows up. Why helloooo there troublemaker 😍
Loved his initial interaction with Olwyn. And when he asks her for a dance I collapsed laughing! It was such a hilarious way of introducing himself to her and her inner reaction was pure gold 🤣
Fuck. Confusion blasts through me as I look between my husband, and this vampire I met moments ago. Why does he feel like he can ask for a danc— Double fuck. It’s because he can.
*evil snicker*
By then I was pretty much invested in finding out more about Casius. I thought things were going well (relatively speaking 👀) until he takes Olwyn away and calls her Winnie?
WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT??? AND WHY ARE OLWYN’S POWERS MANIFESTING JUST AT THAT MOMENT???
Seriously, that ending was BRUTAL! What a cliffhanger!! I need to know what happens next! I actually flipped my phone around to check for a next chapter!
I loved it. I need more of it and I am absolutely looking forward to the next book in this series!! ❤️
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book was absolutely NOT what I thought I signed up for—and yet??? I kinda devoured it anyway?? I’m confused and mildly betrayed but also clapping????
Let’s unpack.
As a romantasy: We’re onto something here. We’ve got plot, worldbuilding, angst, spice (eventually), morally grey chaos, and hot hot HOT characters. It was giving everything it needed to give. Unexpected (ish). Nothing revolutionary but still hit me like a sexy brick.
BUT.
As a reverse harem / Why Choose??? Babes. Where was the harem. Why was I choosing. I didn’t want to choose. And yet I HAD TO because it was one scene with one man and then radio silence from the others (iffff you don’t count that little thing that just had me… left feeling wanting…) I came for shebang in the first 50 pages and stayed for emotional commitment issues.
Did I enjoy it? Yes. Am I unwell about it? Also yes. Do I think it’s mislabelled? 100%. Was it still a banger? ...absolutely, yeah.
Also: the vampire line-up??? Absolutely illegal.
Altair = vampire Slade. Tall, dark, and feral. Iolas = Theo Nott meets Liam from that one Wattpad fic I won’t name. Casius = DADDY DRACO ENERGY. He walked on page and my ovaries did a cartwheel. 🤝🏼🫡🫡👉🏼👈🏼💅🏼🧎🏼♀️➡️❤️🔥❤️🔥🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼
All in all: Loved it. Was mad at it. Wanted more chaos. Still thinking about it. Reallyyy looking forward to the next one!! will devour.
Don’t trust the genre tag but DO trust the vibes. I see this BECOMING a why choose. And honestly I don’t know how to feel about it because seriously? Altair? maaannnn I am in IN LOVE with you.
Hello Goodreads and welcome to my TED talk: Altair is a perfect specimen of a man and i’ll take no criticism on it.
“Remember, Olwyn,” his voice is low, almost too soft, and it catches my attention like a thread I can’t ignore. “I chose you. Not as my prisoner. Not as my pet. As my queen.”
“Because you need me.” I nod. “No, Olwyn,” his eyes pin mine. “Because I want you.”
“Careful with your words, Olwyn. A declaration like that might entice me to kiss you again. And my heightened sense of smell informs me how much you might just enjoy that.”
“I think you’d find yourself spread out on this mat, with me buried so deep inside you, you wouldn’t be able to walk from this room when I was finished.” (this one officers, it’s THIS ONE)

📖 Διάβασα που λέτε το shield of sparrows και το emotional damage με έκανε να κλαίω ολημερίς. Και έτσι όπως σκρολάρω στο tik tok πέφτω πάνω σε ένα art για το "a spark in the shadows".
Και εγώ δεν ήμουν καλά στα POV του Altair γιατί ο τυπάς είναι το πιο υπέροχο Golden Retriever x Touch her and die που υπάρχει εκεί έξω. Oh, and did I mention it's a Reverse Harem? Cause it is.
Here some tropes for you: ⚔️ One bed ⚔️ Touch her and die ⚔️ Bodyguard x Queen ⚔️ Arranged marriage ⚔️ He fell first and HARD
💯Αξίζουν οι 407 σελίδες του; Bitch, θα το διάβαζα και 1.000 να ήταν.
I loved aspects of this book but felt like the pacing was off. The banter between the MCs, particularly Olwyn and Iolas, was well written. Some of the world building elements were info dumps and it would have been nice if this had been explored more naturally.
Olwyn has a lot of potential as a strong fmc. She’s proud and demands respect most of the time. I enjoyed her scenes with other vampire lords and seeing her hold her own. But I did find her inner conflict a bit tiresome after a while. Early on, she realises everything she’s been raised to believe isn’t entirely true, but then spends a good 50% of the book not making any further progress.
I'd love to get to know Altair more, he clearly has an interesting past. However, a lot of his internal narrative is about his guilt over not being honest with Olwyn, but frankly I couldn’t understand why he couldn’t just tell her the truth. When the reader learns everything it really doesn’t seem like a big deal. I found myself getting frustrated with the repetitive arguments between them. He's meant to be a feared ruler, I would have loved to have seen more of that side of him.
There also were a couple timelines bits that didn’t add up for me. Such as, Olwyn grew up hearing about Altair’s bloodthirsty ruling, but they’re the same age and he only became the ruler when he was 18 (they're in their late 20s now). And he was a general before he became king? How does a 16 year old become a general? I think this was probably done to avoid the common 500 year age gap, but it does create other limitations that make his backstory questionable.
In the end, it felt like a lot of filler and internal conflict that could have resolved sooner so the plot could progress. I enjoyed the characters, but felt they lacked some common sense considering their age and position. I think the series has a lot of potential and would love to see it grow!
A new why choose vampire romantasy full of secrets, lies, magic, warring vampire kingdoms and prophecy that will shift the tides.
Olwyn is a young sorceress who has been taken as a bride for King Altair but unbeknownst to her; she is the prophesied one, the catalyst needed to bring about peace between the vampires and humans but someone from Altair's past who has a connection to Olwyn is working hard to prevent that from happening.
As truths are revealed and Olwyn learns that everyrhing she was led to believe about King Altair were lies she decides to stay by his side but on her terms. King Altair and his best friend Iolas both love Olwyn and will do whatever is necessary to keep her safe but they aren't the only vampires who has their sights on Olwyn.
This book was 😍😍😍👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻I loved every minute of it. The world building is great and the character development was fantastic. But don’t make me choose between Iolas and Altair because I won’t! So many great twists I wasn’t expecting. I adore Olwyn and loved reading her go from rebellious to a badass and stepping into her own. This ends on a cliffhanger and I CANNOT wait for the next one.
Read this if you enjoy:
*he falls first *vampires *touch him/her and 💀 *slow burn with not one but two MMCs
I came so close to DNFing this book, but for once I’m actually glad I didn’t. I didn’t really like it until 70% in or so, but I was so intrigued but the figure of King Casius that I was pushing through. And my instincts were right. His arrival on the scene was perfect and I’m very interested in where this story is going. Ultimately, this book just needed an editor so bad. For plot and for style. It was rough out there for a bit, especially at the beginning.
Absolutely loved reading this book. Olwyn really has been on a roller coaster of emotions and reveals through this whole book. Never getting a chance to catch her breath. And now with that ending, even more is gonna be coming. And I seriously can’t wait for book two. I seriously highly recommend this book for all vampire RH lovers. Definitely one of my favorite reads!
I love this author! This book was amazing! The writing is great and easy to read. The tension between the MCs is *💋👌* I can’t wait to continue this series!
If you’re after a book with shadow magic, court intrigue, and a sprinkle of why choose spice, let me tell you about 𝘈 𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘬 𝘐𝘯 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘴 by G.L. Preston. This book had me utterly hooked, I didn’t want to leave it's world or characters behind. ✨
Olwyn is a fantastic lead. Watching her grow from someone kept in the dark about her own life to a character who faces heart-wrenching truths with grace and strength was beautiful. I loved how her journey mirrored our own as readers, uncovering secrets layer by layer. She’s smart, courageous, and able to shift her perspective when confronted with hard truths, a quality that made me root for her. 🌟
Then there’s Altair and Iolas. Altair is all brooding, haunted past, and hidden depths 🖤, while Iolas brings levity and charm to the story. 😏 Their interactions with Olwyn (and each other) are just brilliant, G.L. Preston really knows how to write dialogue that sparkles with wit and feels alive. The banter had me grinning more than once. 😄
The story itself is packed with tension, secrets, and a slow-burn romance that felt perfectly paced. I would have loved a bit more worldbuilding—it’s my thing—but since this is the first in a duology, I’m hopeful for more in the next book. That cliffhanger, though! It’s going to be a long wait for book two. 🥲
If you’re drawn to morally grey characters, fierce feminine power, and the allure of vampire lore, this is definitely one to check out. 𝘈 𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘬 𝘐𝘯 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘴 delivers a story full of heart, humour, and intrigue. 🩸✨ I’m already counting down the days for the sequel!
I'd like to thank G.L. Preston for sending me an eARC of 𝘈 𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘬 𝘐𝘯 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘴. I enjoyed it so much I had to buy the paperback
So, first off, I want to say that I’m a huge fan of Gem’s work. I adored Stag & Hollow Chronicles and The Faerie Guild Trials, which is why I went into this book super excited. But while there were definitely parts I enjoyed, this one didn’t hit quite as hard for me, and I think it could use a little polishing to reach its full potential.
Let’s talk about Olwyn and Altair. While I loved their chemistry in certain moments, I couldn’t help but feel a little thrown off by how Olwyn seemed to focus on Altair’s looks at the most inopportune times. Like, girl, the stakes are sky-high—maybe save the daydreaming for later? And Altair is an undeniably compelling character, but some of his traits felt a bit too similar to other popular book heroes (hello, one blue eye, one black eye, and a scar). The little twist with his eye color was interesting, but it wasn’t really explained, which left me wanting more.
I also couldn’t ignore some ACOTAR parallels—they popped up a lot. Altair being shot with arrows, the cave scene, the inn room tension, even the council chair moment. While I appreciate a nod to beloved books, these scenes felt so close to their inspirations that they pulled me out of the story.
The eight-month time jump was another tricky spot for me. It feels like we skipped over so much, and major events like Olwyn and Altair getting married were dropped into the narrative after the fact. It threw me off, especially when paired with some inconsistencies. For example, Olwyn commanding respect in one scene, only to call herself a captive in the next—it didn’t entirely make sense in the context of her role and actions.
The pacing also slowed down at times due to info dumps. There were sections where Olwyn would go on about vampires being monsters… then not monsters… then monsters again, and while it might have been meant to show her conflicted feelings, it ended up feeling repetitive and made the narrative drag.
Speaking of the world-building and magic, this was an area where I really wanted more. The details felt a little scattered, and it wasn’t always clear how things worked. There were also a few timeline questions that I couldn’t wrap my head around, like how Olwyn grew up hearing about Altair’s “merciless rule” even though he didn’t take the throne until he was 18, and they’re both 27 now. Small things like that pulled me out of the story. Another thing that didn’t fully land was his backstory. We’re told that before Altair became king at 18, he was a general, but… how? It doesn’t make sense for a teenager to hold such a high-ranking position in a military setting. Who puts a 16-year-old in charge like that? It stretched plausibility and made his backstory feel less grounded.
The relationships, too, felt underdeveloped. While there’s definite potential in Olwyn and Altair’s dynamic, the overall chemistry felt uneven. How are we supposed to believe in these deep connections if there’s little relationship building and only one perspective? Sometimes it felt like everyone was inexplicably obsessed with Olwyn without much to justify their feelings. Iolas’s POV, in particular, would have added more depth, especially since he’s present for most of the book but doesn’t get a voice.
By the end, I could see where the story was going, but some of the big reveals felt a little predictable. Moments that should’ve hit harder didn’t quite land for me—like the reveal about Casian calling her “Winnie.” While I appreciated the effort to tie things together, it just felt a little too telegraphed.
That said, there are things I did enjoy. I liked the banter between Olwyn and Altair, and you can tell there’s potential for something great here. The story has a solid foundation, and Gem’s talent for intriguing character dynamics definitely shines in parts. It just felt like there was a lot of filler and not enough focus on deepening the relationships, world-building, or big emotional moments.
I’m still hopeful for the sequel, though! Gem’s books are always full of potential, and I know she’ll bring the magic back with some tightening up of the pacing and a bit more balance in the storytelling. Definitely some good bones here, but I’m looking forward to seeing how this series evolves!
Firstly, I love Gemmas work especially faerie guild trials, so I had very high hopes and was so pleased to hear that she was doing a 'why choose' as this is one of my all time favourite tropes. A Spark in the shadows is book one in a planned duology, the story follows Olwyn who has spent her life hidden away by her parents because she is 'special', she is ripped away from this life as her father and mother essentially give her up once the king suggests taking her and she is forced to marry the Ruthless vampire king Altair, but this isn't revealed straight away, it's known that she is a captive, but others believe she came willingly, therefore no one will come to rescue her.
Because of her speciality (she is the prophecised one, who is supposed to keep the peace between the vampire and human world) his marriage is supposed to keep her safe in a world that she was scared of, believing that vampires were monsters, but this is not the case, as she is brainwashed to believe. There is much tension between the vampire and human realm, and her powers could either be the key or the downfall, as again she is the one said to be able to do this. There are people trying to stop this from happening. She doesn't need this protection, and Altair realises she is much more than he bargained for when she is offered a kingdom to rule alongside her husband. But he feeds her many lies along the way, many things that she believes, when will the truths be revealed, and will she be able to cope with her husband, the monster.
She has to learn to control the power that she possesses due to her 'magic' and there are multiple MMCs to help her do this, her husband Altair, her guard Iolas who both love her and Casius.
This book has many tropes such as Vampires Arranged marriage Why Choose Forced Proximity And much more.
This book was so good, I loved Olwyn from the start she is great, and the way that she develops throughout the book is amazing, I loved the character building.
Altair, I loved the protectiveness, and the fact he calls her 'my wife' makes me swoon. Iolas is great, the total cinnamon roll, playful and kind.
The twists and turns this book had me on, boy, was it a ride and a half, I couldn't stop reading once I'd started, there are so many lies and truths revealed. I'm not usually a fan of slow burn, but I couldn't put this down.
The cliffhanger, I can't cope. I need book two immediately.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
A little repetitive for me. This was an ok book to read. I liked the premise of the plot, FMC ‘princess’ from a barren human land taken by the Vampire king the MMC and forced into his world under the guise of ‘protecting her’ from an unknown enemy.
The FMC Olwyn has always been hidden because of her ‘magic blood’ raised to believe the horror tales of vampires and how they treat humans and will use her as nothing more than a magical blood bag for their own power and gain. So when she’s taken by the Vampire King in an arranged marriage she expects the worst.
Instead she’s given a kingdom to rule, alongside her husband the Vampire King and one MMC Altair. He knows more about Olwyn that she has been raised to believe but he’s afraid that telling her the truths will be lost in the brainwashing she’s been raised with. When is the right time to tell all and will she look at him differently when she sees the ‘monster’ he’s been accused of being.
I liked the idea of the book and the main characters, I liked the MMC and the introduction of another MMC Iolas. For me however there was far too much filler. I didn’t connect with the FMC as much, I felt like much of her ‘drama’ was repetitive sentences and ‘concerns’ repeated throughout with very little growth.
She was supposed to be shown as growing in strength and spirit ‘which had been there all along’ but then towards the end acted very immature, which of course lead to the ‘cliffhanger’
I felt there was much ‘talk’ and little development. I presume as this is book one that is partly down to it as there will be more ‘drama’ later in the series but I definitely feel like there was aspects of ‘filler’ that could have been replaced with more background to the characters or development between them in general.
I also felt like there were random aspects that were not addressed again or just came out of the blue, there was no previous mention of them having being married until about 1/3 into the book, just that she had been ‘taken’.
Not a bad book but I did feel myself getting a little bored about 60% in and waiting for something to happen. Not sure if I will read the next book yet. Maybe once it’s out I’ll give it a go
Seriously, this book needs to be on your TBR list RIGHT NOW! A Spark in the Shadows totally blew my mind. It's got everything: vampires, magic, awesome characters, and a storyline that just sucks you in and makes you want to live in their world! I literally couldn't put it down.
And that cliffhanger?! OH MY GOD. I'm still reeling. I absolutely cannot wait for book two!
Why you'll be obsessed with A Spark in the Shadows:
Vampire Romantasy done so right He falls first and he falls HARD (swoon!) Major "touch her/him and die" vibes That classic "only one horse/bed" trope we all secretly love 😉 A Spark in the Shadows is the first in a duology that's gonna totally captivate you with its dark vibe, shadow magic, and crazy twists. If you're into morally grey, super hot guys, fierce female power, and all things vampire, this is your next read, no question.
Olwyn's spent her life hidden away, told she's some dangerous weapon from a prophecy. But when she's ripped from her sheltered life and forced to marry Altair, the ruthless vampire king, she's thrown into a world she didn't even know existed.
Altair's got a dark past and he's desperate to protect his kingdom. Marrying Olwyn is supposed to keep her safe, to shield her from a power others would literally kill for. But when her dormant magic starts to wake up – and it's powerful and wild – Altair realizes he might've bitten off more than he can chew.
Stuck in a world of political drama and danger, Olwyn has to face the truth about her past and the insane magic inside her. As she tries to control this power she never even wanted, she finds herself caught between three seriously powerful men: her mysterious husband, Altair; her personal guard, Iolas, who'd ditch his loyalty for her; and the terrifying king Casius.
As things heat up between the vampires and humans, Olwyn’s power could save everything or destroy it all. With enemies everywhere and her heart pulled between what she wants and what she has to do, Olwyn has to figure out who to trust before her choices kick off a war that could burn down the whole kingdom. Will she step up and be the queen she's meant to be, or just a pawn in some monster's game?
Get ready for amazing banter, a delicious slow burn, and plenty of spice!
Olwyn has known her whole life she is tied to a prophecy, a weapon to be used. It’s why she has been kept hidden by her parents. But when the Vampire King Altair finds her, she is forced to marry him and taken to his kingdom. Olwyn is thrown into this new world and realizes how little she truly understands. Altair, who is haunted by his past, just wants to keep his kingdom and Olwyn safe. As tensions between vampire clans and the humans start to rise, Olwyn’s dormant powers start to awaken. Now she must face the truth about her heritage and where her magic comes from. And will she truly be the key to saving or destroying the world.
So I must have missed it or forgotten but I was not aware going into this that it would be a why choose. I was looking forward to a forced marriage with a dark brooding vampire king, but I think this is so much better. Altair was everything I expected, tall dark and brooding hiding teddy bear softness inside. And Olwyn is a very well written FMC. She starts off sassy and stubborn and grows so much stronger, both physically and mentally, as her eyes start to open. Iolas adds in lighthearted fun. The banter between him and Olywn were so much fun, as was the tension building between the two. I figured pretty early who the two were to Olwyn when she mentioned memories of her youth, and I am sure Cassius is the fourth from that last line of the book. I am looking forward to learning more about him especially in the next book. I enjoyed the world a lot and can't wait to see Olwyn's parents get what is coming to them. The next book can't come soon enough.

I got this book as an ARC, and I truly couldn’t stop reading it! I finished it in 4 hours and enjoyed every moment of it!
This book features a vampire romance centered around a why choose theme, with an arranged marriage, witty exchanges, shadow magic, slow-burn romance, and plenty of self-discovery. The narrative centers on Olwyn, a human girl brought to the vampire world to wed the vampire king Altair… this book captivated me from the very beginning.
Olwyn the FMC is an excellent character who develops significantly throughout the story and overcomes every challenge presented to her. She needed to adapt to her new life after being separated from all she believed she understood, but she quickly discovered that things were not as she anticipated. The MMCs presented in this book vary significantly. There are two vampire kings (one accompanied by shadows… everyone loves a shadowy figure) and a notably charming guard.
There’s plenty of playful dialogue in the book that I really enjoyed. Significant character growth and development alongside an engaging story filled with numerous twists and turns throughout. I enjoyed each and every section of this book. I really wish there was a bit more world-building, but that’s just my personal preference and doesn’t significantly influence my view of the book.
In general, I thoroughly liked this book and would suggest it… just a heads up, though. You will be captivated by Altair and Iolas.
I had one issue, and one issue alone. And that is that some of the chapters were quite long, but it wasn't enough of them to be annoying.
Loved this book! Fast paced right from the beginning, with lots of things we love; vampires, arranged marriage, forced proximity, magic, one horse/bed and a sprinkle of why choose. The spice was tastefully done and added to the story (big plus from me)!
This might be the first ever why choose I’ve read where I actually DONT want it to be why choose??? I know, I’m just as shocked as you are. Right from the off I knew I was going to be a fan of Altair. The brooding mystery of his character, the quiet nature that contrasts with his underlying rage, and ofcourse the shadows (we love a shadow daddy).
We see quite a bit of development between Olwyn and Altair throughout that had me invested, which left me a little disappointed whenever the connection to Iolas is mentioned. Yes he’s your typical golden retriever love interest, but I just didn’t feel the pull between him and Olwyn in the same way. Unusual for me, because I love an MC who gets her cake and eats it too, but I just wasn’t feeling it for this series. I’m hoping it’s something that changes in the next book and she settles for just the one, but I’ll be reading it regardless!
The overall plot was interesting and kept me invested, but the writing did feel a bit repetitive at times, so I had to drop a star for that. The other half star is because the mystery throughout the book is constantly noted, with secrets hinted at and half truths told, but the reveal fell a little flat for me. I’m hoping for a bit more in the next book that ties everything together.
I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to the author for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Twists upon twists…
Olwyn girl, you’ve been through a lot without being through a lot.
The start of the book is so strong, that we’re thrust directly into the thick of it all. It really captured my attention.
The world dynamic is interesting. The struggle between vampire clans and human clans.
The plot? The twists? The revelations? That ending??? HELLO??? That character is so new and brings up so many anxieties in me, it ain’t even funny. As far as the plot throughout the book, it’s a slow pace, which in contrast brings out the development of the relationships between the characters.
The characters were addicting to get to know. Olwyn because she gets to discover herself and the world that surrounds her. Altair, because, well, hot. But also because he’s a complex person, so much upon his shoulders… And Iolas. Basically the embodiment of a hot golden retriever boyfriend.
And to Gemma, our dear author, I am so happy you made this book a Why Choose. Because choosing would have been the death of me.
I can’t wait to see what happens in book 2!!

And Gemma does it again! I was able to receive this book as an ARC and I literally couldn’t put it down! I read it in 4 hours and I loved every single second of it! This book is a why choose vampire romance with an arranged marriage, banter, shadow magic, slow burn and a lot of self discovery. The story follows olwyn, a human girl taken to the vampire realm to marry the vampire king Altair… this book had me hooked from the very start. Olwyn the FMC is a really good character that grows more and more throughout the book and beats every obstacle that’s thrown her way. She had to adjust to her new life after being taken from everything she thought she knew but she soon realised that everything was not what she expected.
The MMCs in this book are all very different. There’s 2 vampire kings(one with shadows… we all love a shadow daddy) and a very charming guard. There’s a lot of banter throughout the book that I loved. A lot of character growth and development and a really good story with lots of twists and turns along the way.
I loved every single part of this book. I do wish that there was a little bit more world building but that’s just a personal preference and doesn’t really affect my opinion on the book. Overall I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it… be warned tho. You will be obsessed with Altair and iolas
Huge thanks to Gem for the ARC of A Spark in the Shadows! Okay, so let’s start—yeah, the whole “chosen one” prophecy thing has been done, but this was actually really fun and added depth on the characters.
The early time skip? Loved it. It kept things moving and gave the story some serious momentum right from the start. I am so tired of immediate life after the whole start of the series
If you like messy romance drama, this book is it. Picture ACOTAR if Feyre managed to get with Tamlin, Lucien, and Rhys all in one book. Yeah, it’s a lot, but honestly, I didn’t hate it. Altair? Absolute looser boyfriend energy, and I ate it up. He’s crazy in love with her for years, would do anything for her ? And he’s THE king, it’s adorable. Ailith, though? She hasn’t really clicked with me yet, but maybe next book.
The famous tropes are here—one bed, one horse, “Where is my wife?”, hurt/comfort in a cave. You know the drill. But it never felt cringey, just like a cozy nod to things we all secretly love. And THAT CLIFFHANGER?? It hit me like a truck. I genuinely did not see it coming.
Safe to say I am NOT rooting for Casius, his name reminds me of Casio (the watches) for some reason, and I just like Altair the most lol.
Overall, it’s a 4-star read for me. Definitely worth picking up if you’re into fantasy with a little (a lot) of romance. Can’t wait to see what happens next!

What the actual fuck just happened. A Spark in the Shadows had me at the edge of my seat, absolutely gripping my Kindle, and chomping at the bit eagerly awaiting what is going to happen next in the Light and Shadows series. The story is a fast-paced whirlwind and so many things are happening that my mind is struggling to process and catch up...much like Olwyn feels.
Each of the characters we meet are mysterious in their own way. Olwyn is the FMC and as she is uncovering more about her past, we are right alongside her learning about everything. There is also Altair and Iolas who are close friends but who also happen to the King and his Guard, respectively. Then there’s also a mysterious King Casius who is somehow involved in a seemingly larger plot of world and courtly politics.
And if you can't tell, I'm impressed by it so far. The pacing is quick but reflective of the events the characters are going through; getting to know the characters/circumstances through banter is something I'm totally for; the slow burn and the spice are excellent. Most importantly, I want to know what's going to happen next and I really can't wait!
Thank you G.L. Preston for gifting me the opportunity to read this ARC! All opinions are my own.
What a beautiful start to a deliciously dark, enchanting, why-choose, fantasy romance. I'm totally obsessed with these characters!! 🙌🏻🖤
A Spark In The Shadows is a vampire v's human story, following Olwyn, a human woman, who's been hidden away by her parents since a young girl from the dark and deadly vampire's that starve the human realm. One night, Olwyn’s life drastically changes after the beautiful yet dark, merciless, shadow-wielding vampire king, Altair Draven, steals her from her home and everything she knows, forcing her to marry him! Olwyn is assigned her own very handsome personal guard, Iolas. (A 6ft 7" vamp with the most toe-curling side grins, delicious banter, and eye-winks). Olwyn is now queen of the vampire realm and married to the brooding, powerful, dark-wielding vampire king who's full of secrets and a possessiveness for his new wife. Olwyn’s eyes are opened up to a whole new world, where not everything is as she was made to believe!
This story is packed with dreamy, multi-layered characters, court intrigue, unfolding secrets, the discovery of truths, beautiful character growth, magic, action, and steamy, thigh-clenching romances! It's absolutely DELICIOUS!! @glprestonwrites is truly the queen of banter!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Firstly guys this makes 3 series Gemma has me finishing on cliffhangers... I want to be mad but everything she does is so good I can't be.
Altair... Altair... I would let that man do unholy things to me with a smile on my face. Basically everything I love in a fictional man. AND he's a shadow daddy?? And boy does he know how to wield them... And and AND we had chapters from his POV... Seeing into his brain made my heart melt even more.
I would've looooved some Iolas POVs because I just know the pining would've been insane! But I'll survive without. He is so adorable, and his protectiveness for Olywn even against Altair made him so loveable.
And Cassius... man's showed up at the end and tucked shit up. But I know damn well that imma fall in love with him whenever book 2 is out. I mean he has my number 1 weakness, white hair...
Now the story itself, incredible. Such a dramatic start, and then she kept the energy up the whole book. The tension, the hatred, the longing... And she gave us training sessions with Iolas and Altair. It felt so natural watching Olwyn grow and learn to trust Altair (though I am imagining how that growth went with Iolas). And the twists?? Poor Olwyn. I mean I love them, but I feel so bad for her and honestly she handled everything so well.
Olwyn is caught up in a game she doesn’t understand—used as pawn due to a prophecy. She may be a weak human compared to the vampires, but she is fierce, attempting to strengthen her skills, so she can survive this treacherous world.
Altair, a vampire king, found Olwyn, married her, and promised to keep her safe. He needs to show her the truth about her place in the world, or there will never be peace in his kingdom.
Iolas is Olwyn’s lifeline—a vampire guard in Altair’s court, whose flirty banter and genuine care for her are the only things keeping her from feeling completely lost in this vampire kingdom.
Ailith is a blunt, tough warrior that encourages Olwyn to take up her crown and destiny.
And Olwyn discovers that nothing in the world is as it seems…
I loved all the characters and enjoyed the POV shifts between Olwyn and Altair. The world conflicts and the romantic tension hooked me in, and I eagerly turned pages to see what would happen next.
The slow burn was delicious and the intimate scenes were fire.
I was able to read this early as I was sent an ARC, Thank you Gemma! That being said all opinions are my own :)
I was hooked from start to finish with this book. The MCs we follow along with are all unique to each other but mesh together so well and I was not expecting that with such contrasting personalities, but somehow it works!
The story is mainly followed through Olwyn, with some POV from Altair which adds a lot of intrigue around secrets he is keeping from Olwyn. She has to adjust to her new life after being taken from everything she knew and learn how to survive in the new world she's entered while learning that everything was not what she expected.
There are many twists and turns and you feel Olwyn's shock through many reveals and really do feel for her as a character and the emotions she goes through in the story.
I am begging for the next book already!!!! I am so intrigued to see where this will go and how it will impact the characters.
Also I am so in love with the MCs of this it's not even funny.
Iolas is so likeable from the very beginning. He’s that character you can just fall in love with so easily. Altair is Iolas’ opposite but from early on, you can tell there’s a nicer, almost sweeter, side to him; one which grows on you especially in his POVs. Olwyn reminds me of so many women who have been through a lot; showing this defiant & strong woman on the outside but within she is fearful & questions herself constantly. I love Ailith as a character too. She’s the person I want to be; strong, unwavering & not afraid to speak her mind.
I love the little quotes above Olwyn’s chapters, even though it’s her POV there’s still an insight into Altair’s thoughts.
Without giving too much away, the moment of realisation for Olwyn is really heart warming & it’s such a nice part of her character arc.
The twists & turns kept me on my toes & I loved the journey the storyline took me on. I hate a cliffhanger, always have but leaving it the way it is has opened to door for so many things & I love that!
