Anyone who has ever owned―or been owned by―a cat knows its wild and mystical nature. Open the door to a magical world of feline enchantment that offers eternal and ancient wisdom with the Mystical Cats Tarot . Discover amazing artwork of various domestic breeds that look and behave like normal cats, but face many challenges, relationships, and life lessons that reveal the answers to our most important questions. Organized by elemental suits―Earth, Sea, Fire, and Sky―and cat-based court cards, this deck presents the descendants of the Cat Goddess in all their furry glory.
Even though this is not what anyone would call a Rider-Waite-Smith clone, the situations and activities shown on each card do call to mind the comparable RWS card.
On the Nine of Sky (Swords), instead of someone in bed with nine swords hanging over her head, we have a sleeping cat tossing and turning, clearly distressed, as visions of a vicious dog, angry cat, sharp-taloned bird of prey, and firecracker do a frightening “dance” in its head. On the Four of Sea (Cups), an obviously bored or depressed cat totally ignores four capering lobsters in the background. On the Three of Fire (Wands), a cat gazes upward in a manner similar to that of the man on the RWS Three of Wands, who gazes out at the sea.
I like the way Lunaea Weatherstone sets the stage for each card interpretation by bringing us into the situation depicted on the card – in other words, the cat situation – before moving on to explain how the card might reflect our situation and advise us on approaches we might take. Reversed meanings are right on target, offering useful and realistic suggestions.
The sketches and comments at the back of the book are truly a welcome addition, giving us insight into the thought processes of the artist and the rest of the team working on the deck.
Mickie Mueller’s art automatically goes in the “plus” column for me, and I love the way she captures the expressiveness of a cat’s face, eyes, and body language. I like that she incorporates many different breeds and colors of cats.
There are several cat-themed tarot decks available. Something about cats and all things magical seem to go together. The artwork for Mystical Cats Tarot is beautiful. The cats here are definitely cats, not humanoid cat-beings. But all is not warm & fuzzy in this deck; some of the cards are real heartbreakers. Of course, you can still find a useful message in even the most tragic cards.
Quick impressions: You do not have to be a cat lover to enjoy and use it. If you are a cat lover and do Tarot, you really should consider adding this deck to your collection. This deck and book truly pay tribute to Bast's descendants.
High quality cards, easy to shuffle. The readings are fun and whimsical. Only reason I gave it a 4 rather than a 5 is the art. Felt more appealing in a children’s book than in tarot. But it did fit the whimsy of the author’s writing.
This Tarot guidebook (companion to the Mystical Cats Tarot deck) is very nicely done. It contains all the basic information a beginner to Tarot might need: info about the system, how to use the cards, card meanings, and some nice spreads! I don't consider myself a beginner but I still got a few extra interpretation ideas for some of the cards. And I have to admit that I really enjoyed the author's writing style. I was pleased to see that there was a black-and-white image of every card as well, so I didn't need to have the cards nearby while reading the book. Initially, I bought this deck because I collect decks and I like cats and that was on special offer. I expected it to be just a novelty deck, but I was very wrong! It is a perfectly workable deck that follows closely the RWS system - with the exemption of some changes in the name of the suits and some cards. (Not significant enough to cause real confusion though).
The artwork is lovely and whimsical and I adore that the artist actually used herbs incorporated into the original watercolors. As cat lover I love the connection I feel to the deck, and as a novice tarot reader I find the descriptions to be gentle, helpful, and concise without being vague or too brief and perfect for everyday readings. The deck itself is a perfect size for travel and easy to shuffle (with 76 cards this is a challenge). The slight changes made to the standard tarot iconography is cute and I love that the elements are used to indicated the "houses". I highly recommend it to cat lovers and beginners looking for a gentle, cute, starter deck
Companion to a tarot deck. Nice artwork, a little silly in its conception, but nevertheless useful. Those cats give good advice. I haven't read it front to back but have used it extensively in conjunction with the tarot deck. Much nicer than the little pamphlets that come with a lot of decks. Full descriptions, meanings, and reversals. Includes layouts.
This book was great. Artworks on tarot cards, definition of each card, they were all clear and I could understand everything. This book helped me so much in learning tarot cards, and I still sometimes take this book out and read.
