Though Kimi ni Todoke is only her second series following many one-shot stories, it has already racked up accolades from various "Best Manga of the Year" lists. Winner of the 2008 Kodansha Manga Award for the shojo category, Kimi ni Todoke also placed fifth in the first-ever Manga Taisho (Cartoon Grand Prize) contest in 2008.
I vaguely knew what the manga was about, but I really wanted to go in blind because I absolutely loved Kimi ni Todoke, even though I knew the premise of this manga was a lot different from that series.
However, I was so excitedly surprised that this volume was just as fun! It's very different, but no less exciting to read!
Niike is a fantastic heroine to follow! She truly is so kind and loved how she helped everyone around her, regardless of whether they are part of the living or not. She's also very lively and truly brightens up any room or conversation she is part of. Plus, the way that she looks out for Nemoto is really special, and I can't help but feel that there is something about him concerning her past that she can't remember.
Speaking of Nemoto, he is hilarious even though he doesn't try to be! LOL! I truly think it's because of the two spirits who are always hanging on him, because their commentary was total gold! Throw in Niike's responses and then later on another person, I couldn't help but laugh more often than not! Young man has it rough, but I admire how he is trying and genuinely wants to protect Niike. He has a big heart, even if he thinks he doesn't and can't help but root for him and for him to have his personal space! Hehe!
Also, I LOVED the two spirits!! They were SO much fun and honestly feel that Nemoto is getting a ghost harem against his will! Bahahahaha!
Definitely a super fun start to a series! Highly recommend if you like supernatural series with some beautiful art, fun humor, and a romance you can't help but hope becomes a thing!
*(I'm reviewing the Japanese edition but this manga is available to read on MANGA Plus!)*
New favourite manga alert! This has the perfect blend of mystery, humour, and spookiness. There are some fantastic twists thrown in, and the art style is gorgeous, perfectly reflecting the bittersweet undercurrent that ripples throughout the storytelling.
Plus, both MCs are endearing and easy to root for! Always a bonus. :-D
