Aw, Nuts!: The Crumbelievable Adventures of Peanut & Jelly

Rate this book
Get your just desserts with this pun-tastic buddy comedy, featuring Peanut and Jelly!

Every morsel falls into place within the Foodtopia Pyramid. Well-peeled fancy folks reign from the toppings, average doughs make up the filling, and at the bottom, the odd-foods-out form the crumbs.

This is where we find Peanut and Jelly. They may be lowly employees at the Crumb Dump for now, but these ride-or-fries are determined to rise to the coveted upper crust. But when they accidentally unleash a Crumb Feeder into the city, their plans look shakier than an uneven souffle!

This tale has steaks, artichoke heart, and is ripe with comedy!

I received an ARC though NetGalley for an honest review.

This is a comic aimed at younger readers starring the, literally named, Peanut and Jelly, two small morsels on the lowest rung of the...Food Pyramid Caste System? of Foodtopia and their dreams of going up in the world and the difficulties of their lives.

The comic is very bright and fun and silly with carfoonish antics and a veritable assault of food based puns, even if half of them are just replacing any word with 'crumb'. It has the classic straight peanut and magic wildcard jelly that seemed to be going for a bit of an Adventure Time thing, but doesn't quite get there, despite Jelly being a lot of fun. Peanut on the other hand kinda lacks any character.

Now, even I'm not the kind of AuDHD gal to launch into an Anarcho-Socialist critique of a kids comic (I don't think Paw Patrol is mild copaganda, but I don't think it's a libertarian conspiracy as some do), but this goes out of its way to establish a class system that appears more like a caste system with very little thought about what it's doing or saying with it...and I think that sucks, especially with the Southern American 'redneck' pumpkin in in the crumb dump for a gag that just stinks.

Normally, I'd be like, pretty OK comic is pretty OK and kids will almost definitely get a kick out of it, but I'm living in the hellscape of the present in a post class struggle and revolution as nothing but aesthetics a La Red Rising, and this didn't give me the best vibes.

Peanut and Jelly are humble workers at the Crumb Dump and members of the lowest social class at the bottom of the food pyramid. That doesn't seem to bother Jelly, who is constantly cracking jokes and making light of even the worst situations. But Peanut wants to social climb so that he can make it to the height of the pyramid and live a life of luxury amongst the Toppings. His chances become imperiled when one day they accidentally let out a Crumb Feeder, a giant, dangerous worm who begins hoovering up every edible thing in sight -- which is a lot in a place like Foodtopia!

This story is full of food puns and wise cracks at the expense of our titular characters, and there are plenty of jokes for all ages, including the adults who might be reading this with their kids. Only one pun receives an editorial note, and its explanation may still require readers to know the difference between nuts and legumes. Humor aside, the chemistry and camaraderie between Peanut and Jelly is as wholesome as Mike and Sully from Monsters, Inc. -- friends supporting each other through lofty goals and working through difficult challenges as they arise. Perry's bright animation-style illustrations give characters lots of energy throughout and heighten the overall silliness without crossing into caricature.

Graphic Novel
I received an electronic ARC from Papercutz through SLJ Middle Grade Magic.
Peanut and Jelly are friends and live at the lowest level of their town's society. Peanut desperately wants to be one of the top people but things go wrong every time he hopes for better. When they release the Crumb Feeder into the town, they have to find a way to return the monster to their home. Elementary level readers will love the humor and the brightly colored artwork.

A cartoonish kids comic, where a town is terrorised by a mahoosive worm thing and only two foodstuffs (don't ask) can save the day. The problem is the artist struggles badly with action, and when you factor in that one of the foodstuffs is a jelly, well, all the Mister Fantastic-isms really fail to work, leaving many panels where you just cannot tell what is going on. It thinks it's quippy, too – it's just annoying. Two stars is really quite generous.

I would like to thank Papercutz and Netgalley for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

The art was fantastic! It was colorful and fun. I liked the food puns. Peanut and Jelly were really cute. I think kids will enjoy these goofy food buddies. I could see this working well as a series either following Peanut & Jelly or exploring more of the characters that inhabit Foodtopia.

ARC Review from NetGalley

Such a fun and silly read that had me cracking up from the first page. Perfect for storytime with the little ones, especially those who love to yell out the title 😂. It’s lighthearted, interactive, and a great reminder that sometimes things don’t go our way—and that’s okay!

This Whimsical alternative food world is centered on two best friends Peanut and Jelly’s miss adventure. It has the vibe of Sponge Bob but with food. More silly than serious.

Illustrations were brilliant and masterfully crafted. The panels flowed well with the stories.

I had so much fun with this book!
Max Beaudry (creator/ writer) and David Perry (Artist) have joined forces to deliver a super fun and hilarious story that follows best friends Peanut and Jelly on a mission to save Foodtopia from disaster…one that they may have accidentally unleashed!
All Peanut wants is to climb the food pyramid (the social status ranking in Foodtopia) and out of his life at the bottom of the…ahem…food chain. But that dream may come to an end before it can begin!
A funny and food-pun filled adventure ensues, and Peanut might just come to the realization that having an awesome friend along for the ride with you is more important than your social standing.
Max’s writing is great and his background in writing for animation is evident, as is David’s art. His angles and character design are fantastic and the combination of both brings the humour and pacing together perfectly!
After reading this I just wanna be ‘best food dudes’ with Peanut and Jelly!

This cute story takes a unique approach to talking about friendship and status with middle grade kids. Foodtopia resembles old Chewandswallow, the town we all know and love, with its food puns and edible characters. The main character is at the bottom of the "food pyramid" and wants to become a big shot; but he realizes at the end that true friends in need are more satisfying than climbing the social totem pole. Give this book to your 5-7th grader!

HA HA HA! Killer food, squishy things, and more nut jokes than you can shake an acorn at. No wonder Beaudry won an Emmy for his TV work. Real fun read.
