A Mate for the Beta

Rate this book
Wolfs and witches don’t mix. So what happens when a wolf and a witch are true mates?

Alec Hart, Sheriff of Rose, Virginia and Beta to the Grey Wolf Pack never expected to find a mate. His own angry nature meant that he avoided relationships at all costs, not wanting to tie any woman to a violent wolf. But when he gets a whiff the sweet vanilla scent of his mate he’s powerless to resist...

Sweet young plump witch Livia Briers never thought she would ever have a shot with the handsome older wolf, instead choosing to lust after him from afar. But drawn together by the disappearance of a local witch can she really keep her hands off him?

Can a witch and a wolf find happiness together? Or will the prejudices of others tear them apart?

Could have been so much better.

I was going to start reading this book as soon as I'd downloaded it since the blurb sounded great but then I checked the reviews and they were very mixed so I put it to one side, for over a week I kept flicking past it on my kindle then I just decided to go for it, I have to say the reviews were right, all of them, the good and the bad.
I love shifter books an I liked the idea of this, the big sheriff and the little witch, a town with mixed shifters, humans and witches, so much potential for future books, so I agree with all the reviews that liked this but I also have to agree with the review which pointed out the conversations were unrealistic and the repetition was too much. Now as a rule I love dual POV books but in this book getting Alec's point of view made it difficult to view him as a man or a shifter all I could think was thirteen year old boy and I found myself skipping over parts of his conversations, and not just his, Liv's as well because it was, well, embarrassing, I was cringing for them which is not a feeling I want when I'm reading a romance.
Will I read the rest of the series?
I'm going to read the next book 'Mate for the Alpha' and see how it goes.

The Good
-freebie on Amazon
-novella, so relatively quick read
-starts with the Beta instead of the Alpha of a pack, which was a bit different. Though he was clearly alpha in his actions - way OTT possessive and caveman-y

The Bad
-Stilted narrative - alot of info repeated throughout the story, and the dialogue didn’t flow well with it.
-Plot was meh - no real surprises
-Gigantic hero and teeny heroine - the description of their physical differences as well as the age difference (she’s 21, he’s 35) just added to a slightly ick feeling. Had the story been more compelling it probably wouldn’t have bothered me, but it was so cliched - of course she’s a virgin, of course he’s a caveman - that I couldn’t help but fixate on the little details.

The Bottom Line
Eh. I might read the next one….but probably not.

I couldn't believe that the characters name was Briers, I'm kind of hoping that was like a tongue in cheek way of the author to pay homage to M L Briers work and not a two finger salute to the fact that she's obvious ripped off some of her work in these books.
The book itself didn't flow right. The dialogue between the characters was stunted, slightly teen like, and the author kept telling us what we'd already read previously. Words kept popping up again and again in sentences, which makes for a slow read; and then he, and then this, and then that... But I'm sure as with all new writers, that's just technique and it will come in time.
If the writer reads this, don't be downhearted because if she/ he has read M L Briers books, the way I believe he/she has, then they will see that the writer herself started out much the same way and has used reviews as feedback to change and grow her books into the more polished versions of what she's releasing now. She's refused to re-write her early works and has left them there as a blueprint and encouragement to other writers to show her progression in how a writer develops their skill.
I believe, and hope that this new indie writer will go much the same way, from strength to strength and develop a voice of her own.
But why release so many books in one go?

I enjoyed this little novella so much! It certainly isn't the best pnr romance novel and I know the author certainly wasn't gunning for that! I appreciated it for exactly what it (and the entire series in fact) intended to be: a sweet, quick, light enjoyable read! No angst, no mystery, just full on fun and fluffiness packed with OTT protective alphas and the women they love.

This is my favorite book of the entire series! I love Alec and Liv! Such an adorable couple!

The H is older, town sheriff and a wolf shifter. The h is a very young witch. The plot is insta-mate but he worries about their age gap. There's a murder/mystery, fated mates and a good amount of steam. I liked the idea but it really needs an editor and more story.

Price, E.A.; A MATE FOR THE BETA [Grey Wolf Pack #1]

ebook; genre: { paranormal romance }; shelves:

General Synopsis:
This is the first novella in E.A. Price's Grey Wolf Pack series, which focuses on the romance between Sheriff Alec Hart, Beta to the Grey Wolf Pack, and Liv Briers, a witch.

I know this novella has a lot of mixed reviews and I ask you to please check out my PO section, where I address some of the issues, but in all, this is a series I highly recommend checking out.

Characters/fu-bo:
Note: I have decided to put this long fu-bo list as a spoiler, mainly because although each novella in the series can be read separately, they don't follow exactly chronologically. Some of the novellas go back in time to give past history and help explain information. That being said, I love my fu-bo list, mainly because it tells me if there is a character I really like, when and if they are going to get their very own story. If you do choose to click on the spoiler link, you will see they all do (& there are many more characters who will be introduced in the series as it continues, so . . . )

Personal Opinion:
Before I talk about some of the issues, I would like to point out a couple of good things I felt about this novella or rather how this series starts out. I cannot tell you how many times I find it a little frustrating when I read a paranormal romance series and it begins with the Alpha, eldest sibling, etc. of a paranormal group. One of the reasons I enjoy this series is because she does start off her series with the Beta of the pack. Yes, the next one in the series features the Alpha, but still I felt it was different.

The town itself is interesting and Ms. Price makes a point of telling the reader: "The town was about 60% human, 25% shifter, 15% witch. Most of that 25% were his pack, but there were a few others in town who were not. Notably some bear shifters, pumas, bobcats, coyotes and one tiger who had left her pride to mate with a bear." That right there is a promise my fellow readers. Think of all the possibilities she has laid out before us. That right there makes me keep reading the series.

So, now to the brass tacks. Yes, there are a lot of grammatical issues with this novella, but please note, this is a novella, and Ms. Price self publishes her stories. I think if it's a huge issue for you, please contact her on her website and offer or suggest she send her novellas out for beta readers, so these grammatical issues can be solved before she posts her work on Kindle, etc.

Yes, there are also some issues with the flow of the story, again, this can be alleviated with the use of a beta reader. Also, this is the first novella is the series, so primarily, it is setting up the world building. I don't know if anyone else has the same issue, but I have to admit, usually when I read the first book in a series, it takes me a while to adjust and sometimes I feel there isn't enough of the world building. That being said, if the plot is interesting or I can see a small idea of the concept the author has for the series (see above), I usually check out the next one in the hopes that there world building will expand. This usually does happen.

I do enjoy this series, I think there is an interesting concept, and with each next novella, I feel the story as a whole progresses. I guess that is one of the good things about my inability to write reviews when I first read a book, because it allows me to continue to the series and when I do find the time to come back and write the review, I am able to understand the series a little better.

Now, one thing I would recommend to Ms. Price is I just recently read an updated version of a series I read in the past, so in the future, maybe after a beta reader or she herself has re-read the books in the series, she could fix some of the grammatical errors and flush out any parts to make them appear a little smoother and re-release this book. I won't lie, if this were to occur, I would definitely buy it again.

Sheriff Alec Hart is a hard man, he knows it and it one of the reasons he has never spent looking for his mate. Alex has a vicious side that he would never want her to see, of course it takes just one scent of his mate and he is hooked. Quickly changing his mind, he goes from testy nature to protector of his mate.

Livia Briers is a sweet witch, of course the woman who has taken her into her home after her parents died has done nothing but belittle her and make her feel insecure every chance she gets. It is why Alec sees he is the perfect mate for her, he will only make her feel good abut herself and take out the trash in her life that needs taking out. When a witch disappears and it looks like foul play is afoot, Alex plans to mate Livia swiftly and keep her safely by his side.

I had to go back and read the first book in the Grey Wolf Pack series after reading The Alpha's Mate. Alec and Livia are polar opposites and he is so sweet when it comes to Livia, you see a whole other side to him. Livia is a sweetie but she also has no problem squaring off with Alex when need be. I look foward to more in this series, very fun read.

Cliffhanger:
HEA:
Cheating:
Rape:
Violence:
POV: 3rd person, shifts between a number of different characters, including random secondary characters
Sensuality level (1 being kissing only and 5 being Penthouse Letters graphic:: 2, not particularly sexy, though there's some description
Grammar errors/typo level (1 being what you'd see in any book, 5 being this read like a rough draft): 4, there were a lot of typos, grammar errors, missing punctuation, randomly italicized sentences, POV shifts mid-paragraph and back again. This read very rough and needed both a line editor and a copy editor badly.

(2.5 Stars)

Plot Synopsis: Cranky, difficult, and loner sheriff who is also a Beta werewolf finds his mate in a twenty-one year virgin witch whose Aunt hates all were. However, witches are coming up missing and slaughtered. Who will be next?

Okay, here's the thing, Werewolves are my favorite paranormal creature; so, most books with them will keep me entertained. However, "A Mate for the Beta," is purely pornography with a minor plot. While I liked the characters, I was so hoping for more. There was little action and not enough werewolf shifting for me. In the end, I moderately liked the book and I'm unsure as to whether or not I will read book two.

A Mate for the Beta is a charming and light story about a witch and a werewolf finding their true mate in each other while also trying to solve a crime involving a missing witch. It was a quick and enjoyable read which has everything you would expect a shifter/supernatural story to have.

A lot packed into this novella between the romance and the murder mystery. Neither is really given enough space to unfold at a realistic pace, but that's not unusual for this type of fiction.

Grey Wolf Pack Romance Novellas Book 1 - A Mate For The Beta - By - Elizabeth Ann Price

This is the first book in a really enjoyable series that I have fully read a few times now. It has likeable and well written characters, a good plot that keeps you interested throughout. Scenes that have you swooning and then in the next breath laughing out loud.

Alec Hart is a wolf shifter who is the Pack Beta for the Grey Wolf Pack and also The town Sheriff. At thirty five years old Alec is happy to have found his place within the Grey Wolf Pack based in the town of Rose. Alec was unprepared for the impact Livia Briers, or Liv as she prefers to be called would have on him or his Wolf. At twenty one years old and also a Witch he was not expecting the delicious female to be his mate, there was the age difference, the fact she was a witch but none of it mattered once her sweet scent got the attention of him and his Wolf. Even the fact that there is a murderer on the loose within Rose nothing will stop this fated pair from being together even when Alec gets all possessive of his mate and finds himself in hot water because of it, this really is an enjoyable read with lovable characters, steamy moments and some laugh out loud ones too. Happy Reading.

Cute

I really like this author, and this was a cute little story, but not one of her best. I liked the length because I was in the mood for a novella, but it needed parts fleshed out a bit more. Liv is supposed to be a witch, but that doesn't really come into play in the story. It just seemed to be a piece of useless information. Some of the dialogue was a bit bland and redundant. I did like the main characters, and I will definitely read the next in the series. It was a pleasant read, but it was something I could put down to bake cookies or read a magazine.

Ok

It was an ok read with a decent story line, i enjoyed the characters and i love the relationship between the two main characters but i wasn't a fan of the writing style, I'm more of a first person style fan, or duel POV this was an everyone and no one POV style book.

I really enjoy the story, it was light without headaches and hot, an easy read.

I just found that Livia learned that they are mate she has a sudden change of personnality that throw me off a bit. And we didn't get to see much of the power dynamic in the pack or in the Circle

I enjoyed the story and the characters were very likeable. There are a couple off errors and I had to reread a couple of sentences.

I have been reading this series, mostly because some, not all, are available on Amazon Unlimited. Mostly, they are pretty good for short stories. There are a few things that drive me nuts. In every single story there are word tense flaws. The word stood used where the word standing should be. These stories are supposed to take place in the USA, except the language used is British English, not American English. One of the female characters is repeatedly described as wearing "vests", however it's obvious that the author is referring to what Americans call tank tops, or even camis. Another glaring mistake is that one of the characters says that she grew up in New Mexico, therefore, has never seen snow. This was clearly written by someone unfamiliar with the New Mexican climate. I grew up in New Mexico. I promise you, there was snow. A lot of it. An editor, and some basic research would help to make these stories much better.

Hmmmm...

It's an okay read, pretty much follows the usual storyline and ending. I have to say that this is one of those books where you sometimes wonder what in the world the author was thinking when they wrote THAT line! You know the ones, right? The character says something that you have to read twice, then you shake your head laughing because you cannot picture anyone saying this during sex, or whatever they are doing! I've gotta say that those lines alone can easily knock a star off of my rating. Well, we'll never know what the author was thinking but I always find myself hoping that if they are published again they learn from their mistakes-and have an editor that whaps them upside the head for thinking that they would put something that idiotic in a book they publish.

Cute read, not much to it though. After one of the local witches goes missing the sheriff, who's also the beta of the pack, and the alpha try to make sense out of what's going on so the pack won't be blamed for the disappearance. The head of the local witches is more then a handful and just like they predicted she was all against anything to do with them. After trying to get more info on the disappearance Alec, the beta, discovers something that he'd not believed was possible.

Liv, daughter of the head witch, has been dodging the sheriff like he was the plague since she'd first seen him. We spend most of the story with the two trying to figure out what the other thinks of each other. By the end, of course we get the villain to tell all their dirty secrets. Not much to it but enough to make you want to read more about the next wolf that'll fall to fate.

The Grey Wolf Pack novellas are lighthearted paranormal romances, all based around the Grey Wolf Pack led by Alpha Adam Grey and his beta, Alec Hart. The pack lives in a town called Rose which is home to a variety of shifters, witches and humans.

In this first novella, the Sheriff of Rose, Alec Hart, discovers his true mate - Livia Briers, niece to the current leader of the witch circle, Emerald. It was an alright read. A bit of mindless fluff to pass the time with. The world building is pretty weak and the romance is instalove (although expected given that it's a shifter romance about true mates) but the mystery was decent enough - it even had a bit of a twist I didn't see coming. 2 stars.

I liked this.... in a sense. I liked the story and I will say I do like the characters that this series has to offer. I do look forward to their books and how they find their mates, but the writing isn't really the best in this one either. I read these a little out of order and the ones further on in the series are much better in the writing and execution overall.

This was a sweet story, had its cute moments and its funny moments. Short a sweet, but some parts had me cringing on description or dialogue. Like I said, later on in the series it does get better, but these first few are a little patchy.

I love books by E.A Price.

In this one Iris Bennet is missing, she is a witch with the local coven who disappears. The local Sheriff Alec investigates and in the process, finds his mate, Liv. Although her Aunt, the main witch of the coven isn't happy about this. Emerald Cole is a mean old hag and Liv is nothing like her.

I loved this sweet little story, with nice steamy bits too, going through the story of Live and Alec. I've already read the next two books in the series and enjoyed those as well.

this would be a four star read easily if the book had a good beta reader or editor. that was the only thing holding this book back. the subsequent books in the series do get better but do still have a few verbage issues, but the stories for the price are well worth overlooking the much needed proofing. hopefully author will pull and re release after editing. these stories are great other than that!
