Peter Edward Rose Sr., nicknamed "Charlie Hustle", was an American professional baseball player and manager. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1963 to 1986, most prominently as a member of the Cincinnati Reds lineup known as the Big Red Machine for their dominance of the National League in the 1970s. He also played for the Philadelphia Phillies, where he won his third World Series championship in 1980, and had a brief stint with the Montreal Expos. He managed the Reds from 1984 to 1989.
I imagine that fans of Pete Rose (like me) will love this book while people that are not already fans of Pete Rose will find it egotistical and arrogant. I expected it to be arrogant, Pete is arrogant, it's always been a big part of his personality.
I loved this book and I especially loved the chapter about the gambling scandal which appears toward the end. It really breaks down the "evidence" against him and bring light to the inconsistencies that bring enough reasonable doubt to wonder if he was really guilty of all of the things he has been accused of doing.
The book really confirms that Pete Rose is the American sports icon and he deserves far more respect and love than he's received over the decades. He is a good man, he was a great baseball player and he had a great career as both a player and a manager. I wish Pete was in the MLB Hall of Fame.
Started out slow but got much better before the second half. Rose was a great baseball player but oddly enough after saying early in the book to the author that he would always tell the truth, he still lied about betting on the Reds. Still, he belongs in the Hall of Fame for his achievements on the field
Reading this book brought me back home. I grew up in the Covington/ Cincinnati area. I remember walking across the Suspension Bridge on my way to Riverfront Stadium to watch the Reds play. I vividly remember a guy that always sat in the middle of the bridge and he sold peanuts every home game, as a ritual I would buy a bag. I'd be outfitted with a Bench or Concepcion jersey with a blazing red cap. Watching Rose, Bench, Perez, Morgan, Foster, Griffey, Concepcion and Geronimo play. I don't think I understood how great the team was really until I grew up and understood more of the game but, it was fun being among all the fans cheering and being with my dad it was some of the best times of my life.
