Geoffrey Neil, his wife and talkative son live in Los Angeles with a useless, ungrateful fish that Geoffrey threatens at least once daily. Completing a novel is a grueling process for Geoffrey, but he can't break his writing obsession even though he likes sleep, TV and people more than keyboards. His stories use disturbing implications more than graphic depictions to provide a satisfying thrill with little blood--a tactic many readers find equally assaulting on the senses. Geoffrey's overactive imagination and genuine fear of almost everything (You'd be shocked.) are tools that help him write thrillers, but also get him wound tighter than an eight-day clock. His wife calls him the mayor of Stress Town. That scares him. See?
Geoffrey is busy finishing his fourth novel, "Prey for Us", which will be released in 2016. For advance notice and other coveted perks, join his private Reader Group on his website. Meanwhile, why not try one of his other books? You never know ... that could boost Geoffrey's spirits enough to save a pathetic fish. Do the right thing. Do it for the fish.

I received a copy of this book thanks to the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. My thanks for the opportunity.

Wanton Regard is the type of book that you start reading, then realise you have finished it a few hours later, and time lapsed in between. I think because there is a strong pace right from the start of the book combined with my curious need to know what was happening next it kept me riveted.

Hailey Vaughan is a professional consultant, but life is about to get very uncomfortable very quickly for her. Hailey has a stalker, an obsessive, creepy, tech-savvy freaky stalker, seriously you don't want this guy to get his attentions on you. He creeped me out right from the very beginning, as well as annoying me a fair bit with his manner of speaking as well. He made my skin crawl. I think that's the idea.

Whilst Hailey is unaware of her obsessed fan she is also being hassled to join an new wave religious cult that has taken over her home town, fighting off constant invites to join them, so not one, but two types of stalking are going on at this point. It's not a good time for Hailey at all.

She is also dealing with a controlling, mean tempered, jealous husband who quite frankly was a character I just wanted to hate, put it this way, not the type of man you want to marry, or stay married to. Hailey ends up being in fear of him too.

With a fast pace the book escalates the trouble that she is in and just how many people are getting drawn into it all. It becomes a case of "who can she really trust" and it's not really clear even to us, the reader, it keeps us in the dark as much as Hailey. This stalker is not going to give up, he's cunning and smart and clever and VERY determined to get what he wants.

Hailey is a self-assured business woman, it did surprise me slightly how easily she was led by things in early stages of the book and some other minor criticisms I have, but can't mention as they are spoilers, however overall the book is a really thrilling read and has an interesting plot.

It's scary the situation she finds herself in, the latter half of the book was just non-stop action and there are some really well written thrill moments, you know the ones? Like when you are yelling at the character in the book "he's behind you! he's behind you!", that type of thing? Well it's like that, you are poised and tense with all that is going on.

I think the book exposed more of our stalkers dark side and mind as the book evolved, and towards the end it's pretty dark indeed. I actually found the last 40% of the book was plotted really well and some of the minor issues and criticisms I had from earlier parts of the book fell away, I was hooked big time and holding on for the ride, I think I was even holding my breath at one point. If you like tension when you read a good thriller you will get it here.

I don't feel the synopsis of this book is doing it full justice as it's really much more complex than described, and more seriously creepy. If that's your type of book, grab this one and batten down the hatches for a good read.

I received a copy of this in return for an honest review.

If you like to be scared then this is the book to do it, but it is not by the author being gory in the least his clever use of words have the readers imagination running riot and scaring themselves silly. The character of Hailey is rather docile, very trusting of others, in essence as naive as they come, but she somehow drums up the courage to take on her stalker. Hailey has more than a stalker to worry about, others have their attention on her! Hailey starts off this little timid mouse but soon becomes a true tough woman. To top all of the stalking going on Hailey is married to a control freak who really is a creepy guy, he manages to scare Hailey plenty. The hubby is enough to give you the chills for sure, my hair stood on end at the back of my neck.

I felt while reading it that I would never turn a tv or radio on again, or use a mobile phone, because the story delved into the technological side of how our devices can be used against us. Scary stuff !!!

There are plenty twists and turns to keep you intrigued in this awesome story, you will be consumed with reading to the end, without stopping you will be powerless to put the book down.

I haven't read a book lately that has thrilled me more than this one has as regards 'the guessing game'.
I'm flicking through pages left right and center. Its really creepy. The one that is stalking is really scary its like you can hear his voice in your head.

Hailey Vaughan lives an affluent life, well off and has a rather over protective husband, as you read, you can see just how much 'over protectiveness' he emits.
He would really bug me.

The downside was, Hailey was supposed to be in control of her life, quite a confident woman, I thought in the beginning she seemed easy pry. I can only say that she was easily moved because of the admiration.

There is also a religious cult involved here, so I won't say more than that as I don't want to reveal anything, its hard to continue to write a review without giving the game away.

The only other thing I would like to add is, the blurb really doesn't 'sell' the book because its just SO MUCH MORE to this than it entices.#Let me explain:
Its a bit like buying something from the shop to eat, it looks kinda good, the picture on the box looks enticing so you think....shall I or shan't I? Then you get it home. heat it up and think,.......oh my god, this is delicious.

Just look at the book cover! wooooo

I was given this book to read and review from Priorities Intact Publishing via Net Galley who I would like to thank, without them allowing this I may have missed out on pretty dam good thriller

The concept of stalkers in adult novels isn't unique, but Geoffrey Neil manages to pull it off in a way that comes across as original. Gage's character was beautifully conceived. He is truly creepy and complex--the perfect combination of empathetic, manic, and scary. The gradual progression of his psychotic behavior was executed very well.

I appreciated the compassionate protagonist that Neil created in Hailey, although it did frustrate me that Hailey didn't simply explain to her husband--and the police--what was going on earlier in the story. Her decision to consistently ignore her best friend's sound advice was careless and just seemed implausible, especially considering Hailey does not come across as a "dumb" character.

As much as I loved the dynamic with the Echelonians, I was surprised to see by the end of the novel that there was ZERO purpose to that subplot. I was waiting for some big revelation that Gage was somehow connected with the cult, but it never came. I think Neil might have included that side story as some kind of meaningful parallelism (i.e. Hailey is being stalked by both Gage and the cult, and as one obsession intensifies, so does the other), but if that's what he was going for, it didn't quite hit home. If Neil does intend to write a sequel, fleshing out this whole Echelonian business would be an awesome focus.

Four stars overall. I enjoyed the book, pure and simple.

Kept my stomach in knots . . .

My reactions to this book . . . just freakin' bizarre! I could never guess the next twist and for the longest time wasn't sure what I thought about Hailey. She was so strong at first and confident, then I wasn't happy with her decisions, till finally her bravery, strength and selflessness totally won me over. I hated some of the events, hoped they turned out differently, but it wasn't to be. I didn't write it, Geoffrey Neil did and he did an outstanding job.

So Marissa, a confident businesswoman, presenter and consultant. Her 10-year marriage to an overly jealous, gun-toting, though handsome Mason, is fizzlin, not sizzlin. Enter Gage, a potential client, who talks of fate and consistently insinuates himself into Hailey's life. Hailey's bestey thinks him odd and a bit creepy. Mason might have an opinion on that, had Hailey clued him in on his "interest." Why does her ring keep disappearing? Is he really dangerous and what part do the Echelonian's play in all of this?

This was my first book by Neil, but won't be my last. I was on the edge of my seat with this one, up till 2AM reading, and constantly wondering what would happen next.

Frustrating book. The main character was almost TSTL. As a supposedly strong person who handles tough situations every day, Hailey was almost too eager to give up control to everyone else around her. She ignored all the warning signs when she first met Gage, ignored her 'best' friend's warning, let Gage interfere with the situation regarding the pick-up truck driver (and there was even more stupidity - a lone woman, faced with a very angry, big man, gets out of her car to confront him), stays with a husband who doesn't trust her....on and on. By the time the ending came along, I just didn't care.

Review:

The book is suspenseful without having too many horrific scenes with lots of blood and excessive violence that some thrillers have. The characters have complex and layered personalities which made them realistic. Slowly as their personalities are explained, the layers are peeled off and you understand their actions a bit better. This makes the story very captivating and suspenseful and keeps you guess till the end what is going to happen next. Overall this is a thrilling well written story, full of apprehension that keeps you on the edge of your seat till the end.

Interesting concept, kicks into gear at the end

Confession: I skimmed/outright skipped the middle of this book. By the time I made it through the first 40% or so I had gotten so frustrated with how the MC continued to keep things hidden rather than getting people involved who could do something about her problem.

(I will also say I don't feel like I missed out on anything by skipping the middle 30% of the book. Take that as you will.)

That said, once things escalated I found myself caught up in every detail all the way till the end. Yes, the MC continued to do things that frustrated me, but I understood even without having read every page what was going on. I was very interested in learning more about what came from the prologue, and would even be interested to read more in depth about what happened in the 3 months between the prologue and chapter 1. That could be a short story in and of itself.

The author was good at building tension. I found it an interesting parallel that the antagonist displayed so many of the same traits as her husband (ugh, I hated that man. There were zero redeeming qualities and I am beyond baffled as to why she married him in the first place). I was drawn in the same way the MC was, and it was terrifying and fascinating to think how someone could learn so much about someone else and then use that against them.

All in all I'd recommend this book for the beginning and the end. The story is compelling even with its flaws and disappearing plot threads here and there.

Exciting thriller
It started slow with minute details, but it felt like a dark cloud was building, forcing me to keep absorbing the otherwise monotonous scenes. By mid-way, the pace picked up and never slowed down.
Not necessarily a likeable cast of characters, including the heroine, who is loaded with flaws.
The disparate pieces and details start to make sense and fill in a complex jigsaw.
The story and its telling did get me absorbed to the point I wanted to shout at some of the characters for their ignorance. I guess that is what makes it a worthwhile tale.

A man was stalking a beautiful woman, who was contending with a jealous and possessive husband. What harm could there be from a little flattery from an admiring stranger?

This one sounded interesting. The narrative was nice, but the point of the story was taking a while to get through. Was this guy a kidnapper or a killer? Why was he watching these women? Was that all he did was watch them?

The read was okay, but it was rather long and not that exciting. I expected a lot more to be honest. It was okay.

Don’t run from the truth

I cannot imagine being the object of a deranged stalker. Hailey had a minor fender bender and the driver was irate. Gage rushed to Hailey’s aid. From that moment on her life was turned upside down.
She also had to deal with cult group that believed she would be very valuable to their cause. Not sure what the truth issue was.

Wow! Talk about obsessed stalker! This guy has it bad. The sad thing is this happens in real life. As the story progresses you feel like you are right there with Hailey. I did feel like some of the things Hailey said to Gage were way off base and a little bit unrealistic. Otherwise a great story.

Wanton Regard’s heroine, motivational speaker Hailey Vaughn, has to win the award for The Most Willfully Blind Person Alive.

As the story progressed I had to suspend all levels of disbelief as Hailey keeps getting in deeper and deeper with an oddly fawning fan. The pile-up of chance encounters and shady moves should earn a huge red flag and make it clear he’s stalking her. But no, oblivious Hailey doesn’t let the many signs of trouble sink in until too late.

I think this novel ranks as a near perfect example of a male writer failing to pen a believable female character. Author Geoffrey Neil creates Hailey as a cypher who seems defined by the way the men in her life relate to her. Her behavior consists mostly of reactions to their expectations and she curiously lacks much personal agency despite her intelligence and professional success.

About two-thirds in the plotline veers into some 1st-class WTFery after Hailey’s admirer and she starts to discover her untapped inner Xena: Warrior Princess. By that point the reader may wonder where SuperHailey has been hiding.

Neil displays in Wanton Regard an ability to spin thrilling action scenes and dramatic dialogue. Unfortunately I couldn’t get past the Lifetime movie-ish characterization.

Fatally realistic thriller

Unfortunately, I read Mr. Neil's books in reverse order.
Ironically, this faux pad did not detract from the intensity, passion and unpredictability of his creative weaving of a web of sheer and unmistakable terror of the series.

I strongly recommend all lovers of psych-socio thrillers add this refreshingly creative author's three books (so far?)to there must read bucket list.

However, begin with Wanton regard, pay close attention to detail and foreshadowing segues that follow in Mr. Neil's next book and end with Human Resources.

If there is a category for sci-fi, Psychsocio-Thriller Fantasy Horror, The Author would be among in the upper echelon of many terror-producing wordsmith that fans of Stephen King, Kootz, and even Edgar Allen Poe would appreciate and recognize as possible influences that fuel Geoffrey Neil's imaginations and intellect.

I received a free download of this book from Story Cartel, thank you!
I liked this book a lot. The drama was intense enough to keep me engaged throughout the story, while remaining fairly realistic. The story pretty much had a happy ending, although there were a couple of characters that I wish would have survived.
The author did a good job describing all the coincidental things that, seen through a jealous husband's eyes, would definitely look like an affair. I also thought it was interesting to explore the twisted mind of Gage, and what things people will do in the name of love (or at least what they think is love.)
I would recommend this book to others, and I would read more by this author.

Ever experienced the disappointment of watching a comedy that wasn't funny? How about reading a thriller so boring it put you to sleep?
Wanton Regard is not that book. Geoffrey Neil did a fantastic job creating a suspenseful story and a truly creepy antagonist in Gage.
The scenes between Hailey and Gage were well done and fun to read. I would have liked for the sub-plot of the Echelonians to connect more with the main plot, however.
Looking forward to reading more from Geoffrey Neil.

This book is a bit different from Neil's other two books, but every bit as riveting. I wanted to wring Mason's neck! I loved Felicia. Hailey got stronger and stronger as the story developed. There's stalking, obsession, jealousy and cults. I really don't want to say more, because I don't want to give away a single thrilling moment. Just read it!

Intriguing Read

This novel is so much more than what I expected from its description. The author's development of the characters added greatly to his deft storytelling that includes tons of action, plot-shifts and turns. As a result, I have just purchased all of the author's other novels; I loved his writing style so much ... A happy new fan here!

Psycho-thriller!!

There's one very clever psycho who develops an obsession with a married woman. She's extremely naive and too nice for her own well being. Enter, one stalking obsessed psycho! Well written and hard to put down. I learned a few electronic security measures and warnings that would be good for any woman.

This is a can't put it down , take your breath , page turner . There were some issues with the main character , but not enough to distract from the story ....well deserving of that fifth star , IF Mr. Neil would have given me the " why " . ;-)
