The empires of the ancient Sumerians, Akkadians, Greeks, Romans, and Chinese were underpinned by slavery, where one person could be owned by another, and their obedience and labor were forced by the threat of violence or even death. Some of these people were prisoners captured during wars, some were sold into slavery to pay debts, while others were born into slavery. In many ancient empires, slaves accounted for anything from one-third to half of the total population. All were regarded as property, few were entitled to even the most basic human rights, and most lived lives of abject poverty and suffering.

By the sixteenth century, slavery had become less important as a part of the international economy, but the discovery of the Americas changed that fundamentally. New lands were conquered, first by Spain and Portugal and then by other European nations. Vast new areas were available for cultivation, but that required a large workforce. A new trade began in slaves purchased in Africa and shipped to the Caribbean, North, Central, and South America.

The transatlantic slave trade would see a staggering total of around 12 million people forcibly transported from Africa to the Americas, often in the most appalling conditions. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a new movement arose that questioned the moral and ethical basis of this trade. This is the story of the origin, rise, and eventual collapse of the transatlantic slave trade.

Slavery is a thing that has been going on for thousands of years. Ancient civilizations would fight and the losers became slaves (unless they became dead first.) Sometimes escaped slaves were caught and they killed. The Babylonian civilization Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, Spain, Portugal all followed along with using slaves. West Africa became a slave trade area with slaves being taken and shipped to the Americas.

Even Christopher Columbus got into the act. Unfortunately slaves taken in Africa were often provided by African tribal leaders. Over 12 million Africans became slaves for the British, French and Dutch traders.

Many slaves died during their shipment to their final locations and they became the 'property' of their 'owners.'

There were various attempts to end it and the book goes into these attempts and what countries were the first to abolish the practice. The book goes into slavery in United States, its relation to the Civil War, how the slaves were 'freed', the Jim Crow laws and problems for today's Blacks that trace back to slavery.

The book does a very good job of covering all of this from beginning to the end of slavery to the influence it had on today's world.

Transatlantic Slave Trade

Excellent book regarding the history of the slave trade and that million of people were taken from their home, because force free labor of the black men and women; we should always teach the truth about our past so that we never go back to the past. I would recommend this book for all to read, especially the young people so that they know what a great race of people they come from....

Informative book on the origins of the slave trade as one realizes it was a world wide problem early on. It is a shame America was he last to abolish this inhumane practice . It continues o shoe how he rich will stop at nothing to exploit others for profit.

The largest forced migration of people up to then

Interesting reading about the history of slavery before the colonization of North America. Every empire has needed slaves to build their economies.

Very Informative

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's always amazing to learn what kind of damage greed and power can inflict on others.

Obviously only the tip of an iceberg...

...but a topic that needs to be talked about and settled upon. I just hope it is sooner rather than later.
