Angus Konstam is a Scottish writer of popular history. Born in Aberdeen, Scotland and raised on the Orkney Islands, he has written more than a hundred books on maritime history, naval history, historical atlases, with a special focus on the history of piracy.
A beautiful and informative book, although it's less of an atlas than the title leads you to believe. It's more of a general history and cultural overview, with less than ten percent of the images being cartographic. I still highly recommend giving it a look.
It should be called The Historical Picture Book of Ancient Greece. If I'm reading an atlas, I want a map on every page! But still it was very good. It gave me the overall timeline, which helps as I read Plutarch's Lives. He's really fun to read, but he assumes I know a lot more than I do.
This is a beautiful book with a lovely array of photos/illustrations as well as useful maps. A broad range of topics are covered in a very accessible manner, but is necessarily shallow. Unfortunately some questions which are disputed by academics are presented as facts.
For a person like me, crazy about maps and interested in the Classical world, this book is ideal. I can spend an hour just looking at one page! (Because it sends me in so many different directions - this Wikipedia article, that Google Maps page...)
