This book is jam-packed with over 100 kid- and adult-approved movie night recommendations that span decades, countries, and genres, with chapters for Preschoolers, Little Kids, Big Kids, and Tweens, featuring an introduction by Julian Shapiro-Barnum, host of Recess Therapy; an illustrated symbol system that flags age-inappropriate elements like scary characters or bad language; special sections dedicated to beloved genres and directors; fun activities and how-tos, including “How to Watch and Talk About Movies”; and a family film tracker to log your loves, likes, and mehs.
I rarely share books other than picture books or early readers, but today's book is the sort of wonderful reference book that I think most families should have on the shelf. It's a window into the world of cinema for the whole family, and both fun and useful.
"Hey Kids, Watch This!" (2024) is a 288-page movie reference and recommendation book for kids and families, and it's AMAZING!
I'm also sharing because it's timely. It's the busiest time of year - back to school in the Northern Hemisphere; the Jewish holiday season; ... and VIRUS SEASON. Kids getting sent home from school with various icks, and parents trying to parent through the flu, etc. Personally, I have COVID at the moment, which with my compromised immune system means weeks or months of recovery (last year it took 2+ months). So a little help filling all those hours on the sofa is VERY welcome!
Even if (maybe especially if) you're a family that limits screen time, this is a book for you, with recommendations that go well beyond box office buzz, and include old classics that have fallen out of the public eye, and clever experimental/art films that have unique kid appeal. It's a way to explore film thoughtfully with your kids. There's even a section on how to talk about movies, with conversation-starting prompts!
Divided by age group (Preschoolers, Little Kids, Big Kids, Tweens), and with sections on things like Animal Heroes and great moviemakers, it's truly a packed reference. And there are even some fun activities to do together, like a Mad Libs-style Oscar speech!
A wonderful family book to explore movies together.
Excellent film guide for families. The only problem is it's weirdly expensive, which makes it inaccessible to the kids who would benefit from it the most.
