Identical twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield are excited about their class trip to the zoo. They can't wait to see all the animals, especially the monkeys. But when they get there, the monkey house is closed because a young chimp has escaped!
Jessica and Elizabeth, along with their friends Todd and Winston, decide to search for the chimp. But soon they, too, are lost! Will they find the chimp, and will the class find them?
Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
Mrs. Becker’s second grade class is off to the zoo for an excursion, and Jessica and Elizabeth are particularly excited because Alice Wakefield is class mother for the trip. They agree that they want to see the monkeys most of all.
On the big day, Jessica thinks that having Alice with them will mean that she and Elizabeth will get special treatment. When Alice tells her off for pushing in line and trying to get better seats on the bus, Jessica feels hurt. (To be fair, I think Alice could have explained nicely that things aren’t different because she’s there, instead of telling Jess off in front of her friends.)
I think I would’ve enjoyed this one a lot at the target age for the books. As an adult, I wished that more of the story had been devoted to the time at the zoo, with a little less of the preamble about Alice being class mother.
Jessica’s Zoo Adventure Jessica and Liz’s class are going to the zoo. Mrs. Wakefied will be going with them. Their father shares an article that some animals were born (a cub and a tiger). Liz and Jessica both want to see the monkey’s most. They ask their mom (since she’s a class mother) but she says they don’t get special treatment just because she’s there mother.
Mrs. Becker makes them all choice a buddy. Charlie and Jerry are teasing Louis and Jessica threatens to tell her mother on them. Jessica and Liz try to cut Caroline to get next to their mother, but there mother tells them to go back to the back of the line. Jessica doesn’t think her mother should have scolded them (her). She then tries to trade places with Amy and Eva (who have better seats on the bus) but Mrs. Wakefield tells them to go back to their seats. Todd wants to see the snakes, but Jessica tells him they won’t be seeing the snakes.
When they get to the zoo the zoo keeper tells them a chimp is missing so they had to shut the monkey house for the day. Liz thinks of how scared the chimp must be. Mrs. Becker says everything else is open and the first stop is the feeding zoo. Both twins want to feed the baby goats. Pretty soon their given bottles and surrounded by animals. Jessica drops hers, but her mom says she only gets one. Liz tries to give her (hers) but she turns it down. She says her mom coulc have gotten her another one.
Todd wants to see the snakes, but Jessica doesn’t want to. Her mother tells her not to be rude. They have to do some of the things her classmates want. So, Jessica stays put and tells Liz her mom can’t make her see the snakes. She wants to see the monkeys. She heads toward the monkeys and tell Liz since she’s her budy she has to come to. Todd and Winston have come after them and decide to go with them. The clasp on Jessica’s name bracelet is loose, but she doesn’t want to take it off. They head to the monkey house. When they get there it’s locked. Behind the monkey house is a stone wall. There’s a deep pit, some caves, and a pool of water. It’s connected to the monkey house. They all see a hiary leg and think it’s a gorilla. They try to get in through another door but it’s also locked.
Some workers are looking for the chimp in the trees. They all decide they’ll look for the chimp too. Winston decides to look in the gorilla pit. Todd and Liz decide to look in the garbage cans. But but it’s not there. Jessica looks in an area where there’s construction. Liz warns her but she says if she finds the chimp she’ll be a hero. Still, they decide to go back. Jessica then notices her bracelet is gone and starts to cry. Todd and Winston ask could she get another one. She says no it’s special. Liz says they’ll find it. Winston think he sees it but it’s just yellow string. Todd wants to go down a path but its all starting to look the same to Liz. Eventually they come back to the construction place. Jessica hears a noise and looks inside a water pipe. Inside the pipe is the missing chimp. The chimp is frightened and won’t come out. Winston has a banana and Jessica decides to use it as bait. Jessica wants to hold it, but so does Winston. They both agree to hold it together. Slowly she inches forward as they give her pieces of the banana. Two workers come up then and get the chimp all the way out. All her classmates are full of questions. Lucily the zoo worker tells them what happened. Mrs. Becker pulls Todd, Winston, Liz, and Jessica to the side and tells them they’ve been worried about them. She asks if they got lost or ust decided to go off on there own. Jessica confesses and then apologizes. Her mother pulls them to the side and tells them she’s angry at them, but proud. She warns them not to ever do that again and then says let’s go see the cimps.
The teacher then gives them a lesson on telling the difference between monkeys and apes. Then she tells them interesting facts. They decide to name the chimp Jessica. Jessica confesses to her mother at lunch that she lost her bracelet, She says they’ll stop by the lost and found.
The class stops by the souvenir shop. Liz gets a postcard with a lion cub and a pen with a monkey that goes up and down a tree. Jessica wants either a hat that says Please Don’t Feed This Animal and a sticker. She gets the sticker. The man in the office finds the bracelet. Her mother says she’ll hold on to it until the clasps is fixed. On the way Lila and Ellen sit by the twins. They tell them Mrs. Becker is getting married again and marrying someone from SV. She was married before and her husband died. Lila says she’s going to find out who it is. Then it leads to the next book will Mrs. Becker leave.
My Thoughts Wow! Jessica really acted like a brat in this one. I wanna see the monkeys. I don’t wanna take my bracelet off. But as always even when she’s a kid things work out in her favor. Amazing! Then it was sumb move for her to try to save that chimp. They tried to make it look “heroic”. What if the chimp would have been frightened enough to bite her or attack her. I know it’s a baby still..Then there’s no way she should have been able to find that bracelet in a ZOO

Jess isn’t having the best day on the class trip to the zoo. She keeps expecting special treatment because Mrs Wakefield is helping out, and she gets scolded instead. So she basically throws a hissy fit and decides to refuse to follow the group, forcing her buddy Liz to follow. She wants to see the monkey house, which is shut because the baby is lost how does that happen...). Todd and Winston go with the girls (more heavy hints at Todd liking Liz!) but they can’t get in. Jess loses her special name bracelet though, so they start looking for that, and of course Jessica finds the monkey. She coaxes it out with Winston’s disgusting smooshed banana, and is a hero. They get a brief lecture on running away, but Jessica gets the monkey named after her so what does she care? 🤦🏼♀️ Oh and she finds her bracelet in the lost and found. All wrapped up in a neat little bow isn’t it! My rating - 3/10.
