This book does a horrible job of depicting grief. Spoiler Alert. Christy's boyfriend Mike dies in an accident, and everyone acts like she should "be over it" when it just happened. After a few months, a young man who works at the hospital where Mike died asks her out. He confesses that even though she said she wasn't ready to date and was hung up on Mike, he thought he would try. It was like Mike's death, and her reaction didn't matter. And her stupid friends Betsy and Bud were worse. I don't know. The author, Maud Johnson, was in her late sixties when this book was published in 1984. I hate to be an ageist, but her age shows in writing this book. I did some research and found these books were best sellers (there are 4 books in the Christy series); however, they received dismal reviews by trade journals, and I can see why. I'm glad something like this wouldn't be written today. A passive heroine who allows everyone to dictate how she should grieve. Even her friend Betsy was like, we would feel better if you would go out with us more, and you're becoming a hermit. I don't know what kind of grief Maud Johnson had been through, perhaps this was how they dealt with grief when she came of age, the author was born in 1918. I know everyone grieves differently, but how the other characters treated Christy was out of touch, insensitive, and just ridiculous.

Halfway through the book, I realized this is the best in the series so far. Although her "best" friend didn't seem terribly understanding.
