Men in books aren't better follows Molly, a struggling author, who hires a non-sexual male escort as inspiration for her next novel after her engagement falls apart.

The premise of this book immediately intrigued me and whilst it does a lot well there are a few nitpicks and things I didn't really enjoy.

The banter between Molly and Jared was hilarious and sweet at times. However, beyond an innate physical attraction I did not buy any romantic chemistry between the two characters. I think they would have made brilliant friends but not as a couple.

The pacing of this book is quite quick but I don't think that's a negative, it keeps the reader interested and the story is constantly evolving. That being said the miscommunication between the two characters seemed a little contrived and unnecessary. The third act conflict was kinda silly and unbelievable, I think it would have been easier to come up with a more plausible conflict between them.

As a personal nitpick, the FMC Molly is British and on a number of occasions she says or does something that Jared remarks as "so British". As a Brit let me say.... none of these are British. If the authors really wanted to drive that point home there are a number of other examples they could have chosen.

Overall a quick and reasonably enjoyable read. If you're in the mood for a quick romcom give it a try.

I was lucky enough to read an early copy of this book, and it was such a fun romp! I loved the chemistry between the characters, and despite my usually middling feelings about Vegas the setting was a perfect backdrop for the romance. Highly recommend this one!

I had the opportunity to read a pre-publication copy of this novel. It is well written in a dual point-of-view style.

Seattle-based Molly is a writer hoping to tap into the romance genre, a pivot from her successful series of mystery books. But she is blocked, and her editor is calling, calling, calling about when she'll submit her draft. She knows, or thinks she knows, what a woman wants in romance but, literary pro that she is, decides to research what a man wants. So she hires one, a New Yorker by the name of Jared, fully disclosing her motive. (No, not for that, as both parties make clear from the start.)

A book like this lives or dies on its writing, and these joint authors do that very, very well. We are given real characters with real issues. Characters we come to like.

My only caveat is that I'm not a fan of a Las Vegas setting, though here that city's artificiality may be somewhat intentional since it's an intentionally artificial "romance weekend." That, though, is secondary to Molly and Jared and their special weekend.

Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A sparkling debut!

Famous author Molly's in a pickle. She's left thrillers behind and has signed up to deliver a best-selling romance to her publisher, pronto. But after her fiance cheats on her, she's single and cynical: hardly ready to write a word of romance. For inspo, she discovers a companion agency called Plus One, immediately connecting to the picture of ultra-hunk Jared. With a research budget at her fingertips, she arranges a fake-dating weekend in Las Vegas with sexy Jared, who's playing the companion game to save money to start a climbing gym. The pair immediately hit it off: but who can tell whether their chemistry is real or all for show: and will what happens in Vegas stay there? Or do the unlikely couple have a future?

MIBAB is exactly what you want in a romance: zinging with chemistry, wit and heat, all against a fun and immersive Vegas background. I can't wait to see what this writing duo does next: bring on the series!

Men in Books Aren’t Better is a romcom with a fun new twist on the fake dating trope (I do love a fake dating trope). I don’t want to give too much away about this story, but I will say most of the story it’s based in Las Vegas. This means fake dating in Vegas!

The two main characters feel authentic and are well developed, with great backstories that carry them through their growth. I loved how, at the surface, the two seem like opposites, but as they reveal themselves they fit perfectly together.

This is such a fun romance with great sexy tension. If you’re a romcom reader, you’ll want to keep an eye out for this one!

If you had any doubts that writers will go to any lengths to get the story, then you need to meet the main character, Molly Covington. Molly is a feisty writer who hires a companion to help her so she can research/write the best romance novel. Jared is the guy for hire and they plan a wonderful “date” to Vegas.
I think there’s something to be said for all the ways people can meet in life, and this story brought a smile to face. It’s a fun story and I highly recommend.

I was so lucky to read an early version of Men In Books Aren’t Better by romance co-author team Amanda Nelson and Lisa Marie Potter. A sweet romance where Molly, a best-selling thriller author, hires a companion for research on romance, the slow burn heat is off the charts! Jared, the companion, doesn’t disappoint on romantic Vegas dates. I can’t wait for the next one in the series!

Not all things need to stay in Vegas. To add yet another genre to my eclectic summer TBR, I just finished Men in Books Aren’t Better, which falls in the Wholesome Romance category. Co-written by Amanda Nelson and Lisa-Marie Potter, our protagonist, Molly, is a relatable, recently jilted heroine with a looming deadline. Cleverly arranged by the authors, Molly is a successful mystery writer who is now struggling with her new foray into the romance genre, symbolic of her most recent failed relationship.

Enter Jared, a companion for hire, which may sound like a convenient placement of a love interest, but not so fast. The initial interactions of the two feel authentic with just the right amount of tension that builds throughout. What shines through here is a well-crafted plot with devilishly good dialogue that delivers the reader an expertly paced “will they or won’t they” with an ending that exceeds expectations. I highly recommend this book for a perfect weekend getaway read.

Such a fun debut romance novel by Amanda Nelson and Lisa-Marie Potter with a refreshing view on the fake dating trope!

The book is about Molly, an author facing a tight deadline and an incomplete romance manuscript, who decides to hire a male companion for immersive research in Las Vegas. She meets Jared, a charming and self-assured extreme sports lover who works as a Plus One. Their connection is so effortless, but as their three-day getaway progresses, one of them will need to be honest about their feelings to see if they have a chance at love.

Both characters are very likable and relatable and their banter is amazing. You could feel the banter and chemistry between Molly and Jared coming through the pages. Also, because the book is a dual POV you can experience the development of both of the characters and their feelings for each other throughout the story.

One minor point I didn't like about the book was the fact that the authors choose to make up other names for popular existing social media platforms, it was a bit cringe to be honest.

Overall, the story had me giggling all the time and I recommend this debut novel to my fellow contemporary romance readers.

Many thanks to NetGalley and BookBuzz for sending me a digital copy in exchange for my honest review.

Rounding up to 4 stars! Molly is a thriller writer who is shifting into the romance genre. The only thing is that she is freshly broken hearted after she found out she was cheated on by her fiance. With no way to feel and write happy love, she decided to find a man to romance her. With a tight novel timeline, she finds Jared from a companion website. (one that does not allow any messing around).

I loved this story and thought that the first half was a perfect execution! I was actually screaming and kicking my feet waiting for them to touch!!

I was instantly drawn in by the the story and the banter that Molly and Jared shared. The beginning of the book was so interesting and the plot was original. I loved how much we got to learn about why Molly didn't have a romantic muscle in her body and why Jared felt so used.

Overall, this story was so refreshing and a nice treat in between dark mafia romances. Look forward to reading more from these authors.

Thank you to Wild Rose Press for providing me this ARC. All opinions are my own.

This was a cute & easy read! I really enjoyed the plot, Molly’s personality, how charming Jared was, and the TENSION.

I thought the story was well written, up until the Enrique moment. I was really disappointed that this scene happened, everything the characters were feeling and wanted was finally happening. I know romance books tend to have third act break-ups, but this one felt like a punch in the face. I understand how the events leading up to this scene influenced it, but I think Molly and Jared deserved that moment together. They both have been through so much hardship in their lives, they should have had that moment and the third act break-up could have been caused by something else.

The ending was cute, with the conference scene being a little corny. I am glad they found their way back to each other, but also think that Jensen shouldn’t have been introduced since she ended up cancelling on him. If the authors are thinking of doing a second book, would love it to be focused on his story!

One minor thing, I didn’t love how the beginning of the chapter pages were formatted. The chapter number and the POV name were the same font size as the rest of the book, making it easy to accidentally skip over/miss. I also found it a tad difficult to follow the text conversations, they didn’t tell the reader who was texting what, making it confusing at times. This may be different in the physical book than how it was in this ebook.

Overall, I did enjoy the Molly & Jared’s story! There are just a few minor things that I wished were different.

I received an ARC from BookBuzz through Booksprout. All opinions are my own.

“Men In Books Aren't Better” is a delightful rom-com that weaves humor, heart, and a touch of chaos into the story of two unlikely protagonists. The narrative follows Molly Covington, a thriller author who is struggling to meet her deadlines for her debut romance novel due to her writers’ block caused majorly because of her ex-fiancé. To get out of her writers’ block and get inspired, Molly takes extreme measures and hires a companion, Jared Washington for three days. They plan to spend their designated three days in Las Vegas. Things take an unexpected turn when feelings get involved in their strictly business relationship.

This book had me kicking my feet in the air and giggling half the time. From the moment Molly and Jared connect on a video call their chemistry is electric. The witty and flirtatious dialogues and endearing characters make it impossible not to root for them as they navigate their feelings towards each other. The book is packed with multiple romantic moments, particularly during Jared’s attempts to "help" Molly with her research for the book.

The writing style is fresh and engaging, perfectly capturing the essence of modern romance. The pacing is spot-on, keeping readers hooked without feeling rushed. The blend of romantic tension and moments of banter creates a delightful reading experience that will have you flipping pages late into the night.

Ultimately, “Men In Books Aren't Better” is a heartwarming reminder that love can be found in the most unexpected places. If you’re looking for a light-hearted escape filled with laughter and a sweet romance, this book is a must-read!

✨ Living in Las Vegas, I was thrilled to dive into a story set in my city—and this one delivered such a fun escape. Molly and Jared completely stole my heart!

🔥 The chemistry? So well done. The banter? Playful and engaging. Jared’s charm and Molly’s determination made their dynamic unforgettable. The vibrant Vegas setting brought their story to life, from sweet dates to moments of hilarious tension.

I loved how the dual POV showed their struggles with feelings and communication—it felt genuine and relatable, making the ending all the more satisfying. This debut is a sweet and spicy mix of light-hearted romance with just the right amount of depth.

Thank you, Netgalley, for the ARC! If you’re a fan of romances with humor, heart, and a touch of heat, this one’s for you. 🌟

Molly writes thrillers and is trying to expand into romance. The only problem is that she's lost her writing mojo since breaking up with her fiancé Enrique a year ago. So to get some inspiration she hires Jared as a (non-sex) companion and goes off for a romantic weekend in Vegas. Jared has issues of his own. He wants to own the adventure experiences company he works for as a guide and has been a companion for the Plus One agency in the hopes that he can get there quicker. This was a fun, clean (nothing beyond kissing) romcom but it fell short for me. The banter and tension between these two was great, but the assumptions and miscommunication was off the charts. I thought the "break up" was frustrating and I still can't decide if I liked the ending. There is a set-up for another Plus One book involving a minor character at the end (because otherwise there's an unnecessary chapter at the end). Overall, a cute 'fake dating' romance.

After a prolific career as a mystery novelist, Molly Covington decided to write a romance, but after finding out her fiance cheated on her, she's facing a mean case of writer's block. At the suggestion of her agent, she decides to hire a companion. Jared is the top companion at Plus One. From the moment they meet, sparks fly between the two, but Molly isn't looking for love - just an idea - and Jared can't mix business with pleasure. But a vacation with one another in Vegas causes them to question everything.

The romantic tension between Jared and Molly and their chemistry is off the charts. The entire time, you're waiting for them to realize just how much they've come to care about the other. And you're cheering them on the entire time. The story is creative and fun. The authors have done an excellent job with this story, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a happy ever after.

Men in Books Aren't Better is a romance-lover's dream read! The electric back-and-forth between the two extremely relatable main characters will keep you turning the pages, awaiting their next cleverly-written interaction. Your stomach will take that sought-after "roller-coaster ride" a reader craves, from the beginning to the satisfying end of the story (with some twists to boot). Clever and descriptive language will imprint these two distinctive characters - and their love story - on your heart. Just a great debut novel by this co-author team.

This is a good book. The two main characters are Molly and Jared. Molly is in a time crunch with the romance book she writing. She is having a writer’s block. Her agent suggested that she get an escort service to get a man to help her write a romance novel. She gets on line and picks a service and a man. She pays her fee. He contacts her and agrees to go to Las Vegas for a couple of days. Jared is the man from the service, he decides the best way to show Molly is romance. He answers all her questions about romancing. They go on several dates. They each have issues with trust. They fall in love.

Technically 3.5 stars. I absolutely adored the concept and the first half of the book. Lots of pining and tension. Jared and Molly’s banter and chemistry were terrific.

Unfortunately, the last half of the book started losing me. Molly made some pretty big mistakes and I didn’t see how she could redeem herself. Jared intentionally said things to hurt Molly. I felt that there was a lot of things left unsaid and it became frustrating to see these characters assume so much about each other and not communicating. I didn’t feel we got the closure we deserved regarding their final fight and Jared’s family situation.

I appreciate the ARC!

These authors can WRITE! I loved this story. It is wonderfully written in alternating points of view chapters, and I enjoy that style of writing a lot. It is so intimate, and the characters come across so real. I am committed to not giving away spoilers, but I could gush about this story quite a bit. Read this book, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

The story and plot felt so original and fun. Molly and Jared’s banter was witty and sharp right from the start. The set up felt different than most rom-coms I’ve read, and talk about slow-burn! Early on I was rooting for these two to get together and the buildup was amazing. The book reminded me of the hand-flex scene from Pride and Prejudice. Small moments of connection and lots of “almost” moments. It felt very early 2000s rom-com/comfort movie, and I loved that.
Synopsis -

But she soon realizes she may not be as prepared to write about love and romance as she thought. Enter Jared. After reading the synopsis, I felt this book might be a perfect fit for my holiday vacation reading. When I opened to chapter one, the page opposite caught my eye—it was a “Praise for Amanda and Lisa-Marie” section featuring remarks from five authors. Their glowing reviews made me feel even more confident that I had chosen a winner. Without repeating their thoughts on Men in Books Aren’t Better, I wholeheartedly agree.

I thoroughly enjoyed the romance between the hero, Jared, and the heroine, Molly. Though my busy work schedule meant I had to start and stop several times, each time I picked it up, the story lifted my spirits. I connected deeply with the cast of characters, especially Molly, who was well-developed, grounded by a supportive family and co-workers, and yet carried the fame of being a number-one author with grace. Her quick wit and humor added so much charm to the story. While Molly had her share of baggage, it paled in comparison to Jared’s. Jared, to me, was like an adorable puppy needing to be saved—bless his heart. He, too, was quick-witted and had a great sense of humor. I especially loved the moments of flirtation, banter, and occasional miscommunication between Molly and Jared, which made their relationship feel authentic and relatable.

The writing style enhanced my enjoyment, particularly the dual perspectives from Molly and Jared. Their points of view on shared experiences added depth and revealed their vulnerabilities, making them all the more lovable. Jared had all the qualities of a perfect book boyfriend: handsome, smart, sensitive, kind, a little insecure, and an old-fashioned gentleman. Molly, on the other hand, was inquisitive, determined, intelligent, beautiful, honest, and a touch dramatic. Her wardrobe of Bon Jovi and Duran Duran T-shirts won me over completely.

The story is set in Las Vegas, marking Molly’s first visit, with Jared as her guide. Having vacationed there myself for the first time last year, I felt transported back to the vibrant city. The vivid descriptions and immersive writing allowed me to experience the sights, sounds, and energy of Las Vegas all over again.

The chemistry between Molly and Jared was a joy to witness as their relationship slowly unfolded. I couldn’t help but cheer when they finally achieved their Happily Ever After. By the end, I had a delightful book glow. This story made me smile from start to finish, and I would happily read it again. It’s a keeper for my library, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, heartwarming romance.

Men in Books Aren't Better, by Amanda Nelson and Lisa-Marie Potter, kicks off with Molly, a thriller author in a creative rut, who embarks on an unusual quest: hiring an escort to inspire her switch to writing romantic comedies. Molly’s skepticism toward conventional romance, coupled with her career-driven desperation, leads her to Jared Washington, a professional companion with charm, wit, and an uncanny ability to challenge her cynicism. Their encounter is both a humorous and heartfelt exploration of vulnerability, love, and personal growth.

The book’s writing is a delightful mix of sass and sentiment. Nelson and Potter’s prose sparkles with witty dialogue that feels as if you’re eavesdropping on real-life banter. Molly’s self-deprecating humor and Jared’s dry wit create an entertaining dynamic. One of my favorite moments is when Molly, in all her stubborn brilliance, searches for synonyms for "escort" to avoid the stigma leading her to the hilariously titled "Plus One Companion Agency." The authors’ ability to inject levity into Molly’s personal turmoil is refreshing, and it makes her a protagonist you want to root for, flaws and all.

While the premise is quirky and fun, the book’s deeper strength lies in its exploration of human vulnerability. Molly’s struggle to move on from a broken engagement and Jared’s jaded view of relationships add layers of realism. A standout scene is Molly’s internal debate about her expectations for Jared—balancing professional respect with undeniable attraction. It’s a testament to Nelson and Potter’s skill that these emotional beats feel organic, never forced. The "meet-cute" via video chat is a pivotal moment with its charming awkwardness and genuine sparks between the characters. Jared’s playful challenge to Molly’s aversion to romance (and his wariness of the ocean due to sharks) had me smiling like a fool.

Men in Books Aren't Better solidifies itself as a modern rom-com gem. It’s perfect for readers who love a balance of humor and heartfelt moments, especially those who appreciate protagonists grappling with real-life messiness. Fans of Emily Henry or Sophie Kinsella will feel right at home. I’d recommend this book to anyone in need of a warm, witty reminder that love—both on and off the page—can be unexpectedly transformative.
