North American Indians: A Pictorial History of the Indian Tribes of North America, published in 1997, is a beautiful large-format book, covering all the many different regions and tribes of Native American Indians in great detail. There is a wealth of information, with copious illustrations and photographic portraits. Much of the material is new to this book. The author, Colin Taylor, is a leading expert on all aspects of Plains Indian culture, and has previously published several books on the topic. He is based in Hastings, East Sussex, but lectures throughout Europe and the United States.
Sadly, I cannot rate the book other than leaving it on my default of 3 stars, nor give a detailed review. I have attempted to read it several times, but the format defeats me. The print is on the small side, and does not magnify very well. The book is a horizontal format, so bulky to hold, plus there are regularly 8 columns across a double page spread.
For someone without visual problems however, it might be well worth a look, since it is an attractive-looking book, rather on the lines of the Dorling Kindersley books. The information in this particular book is more organised than usually found in such books. Even so, personally, I have found that I admire them rather than finding it easy to retain the information very well. For me they are more to "dip into", than read in a sustained way - stunning though they are to look at.
I will try not to be depressing...but its hard. This book is a near chronological history of broken treaties, lost heroes, and forgotten history of the Native Americans. It has beautiful photographs that help depicts the rich culture that did exist before a sustained campaign of genocidal war. The sad, continual, almost exact pattern of treatment told by each tribe again and again was best sum up at the end of the book. "When the white man sees some good thing the Indians has, he takes it." However I would recommend this book for all who are interest in history, and meet several lost heros of the Native Americans.
