IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE?

The answer to that question, as nurse practicioner Lee Murphy knew all too well, was a resounding "Yes!" But the vowed-never-to-get-involved-with-an-M.D. Lee had a serious problem on her hands, for despite her pledge, she still had to work with the devastatingly handsome Derek Taylor. And was it her imagination, or did Dr. Perfect, with his soulful blue eyes and blinding smile, suddenly seem to be paying attention to little old mousy her? It was enough to make Lee wonder, just the tiniest bit, if there was any chance that her fantasy lover could become her real-life loveand if, just this once, promises were made to be broken….

Everyone in this novel is so inappropriate I can't even... and the worst part is the author knows it.

Our heroine, Lee, has the hots for Derek, one of the doctors where she works (as a nurse practitioner). She spends a lot of time having really graphically-described sex fantasies about him while staring at him at work. So Derek decides to sit her down and be like "hey, you're staring at me a lot and I know you think I'm hot. Well, lucky you, I think you're hot too, so let's hook up!" Lee is totally taken aback and is like "yeah, no, let's not."

Derek then proceeds to get massively, massively pissy and throws a mantrum for days and days - nitpicking all of Lee's work, shouting at her in front of patients, etc. Lee's friends sit her down and literally walk her through the textbook definitions of sexual harassment; some random other coworkers are like "you need to call him on this." Derek, meanwhile, has convinced himself that Lee's work product is unacceptable; he calls her into his office and berates her. Lee, to her credit, calls him on the fact that her work hasn't changed and the only reason he's doing this is because she turned him down and this is sexual harassment and she doesn't have to take it, dammit! Derek is horrified and promises not to do it again. It's like something out of a training video.

That does not, of course, stop him from making yet another pass at her (nominally just as friends), but when she turns him down AGAIN he goes to a mountain cabin and gets in a car accident and she then goes up to the mountain cabin to see him (why?) and rescues him. She takes care of him, they become friends, he makes ANOTHER pass at her (definitely not a friends-pass but a pass-pass), she turns him down YET AGAIN, and then he proves that he is in fact able to not harass her afterwards... so she mopes because he's being nice to her even though she turned him down. He then rescues the entire clinic from an estranged husband with a gun (long story) and Lee goes up to the cabin and hooks up with him.

Anyway, he then proposes one month into their relationship, which unsurprisingly goes terribly considering that they barely know each other and definitely aren't comfortable having big discussions about their lives and futures. She's convinced that he definitely doesn't think she's attractive; he's convinced that if he yells at her enough she'll come to her senses about whatever their current subject of disagreement is.

The book isn't all terrible. Lee's sexual fantasies are kind of fun and never presented as weird or creepy (although I do as I said have issues with the fact that she was apparently staring dumbly at the poor guy in the workplace enough that he could pick up on them), and once they've started hooking up they do some mild roleplay where she describes said fantasies to him. They both come off as believably good at their jobs and realistic doctor and nurse (Derek has student loans, Lee hates it when doctors try to get her to speed up her time with patients). Over all, though, kind of a hot mess.

It wasn’t a terrible read but it didn’t have many redeeming features. My recommendation is not to waste your time. The imagination sequences were ridiculous. Lee’s use of medical jargon was also annoying. While in a medical setting, its justified but not when you’re by yourself. The development of the relationship was unrealistic I found the chemistry between the main characters unbelievable and if it were reality I would expect the couple to separate as they just did not suit.
