Deadly Angels #5

Vampire in Paradise

Rate this book
The vangels are back in Vampire in Paradise, the latest in Sandra Hill's bestselling Deadly Angels series...

It's been centuries since the Norseman Sigurd Sigurdsson was turned into a Vangel—a Viking Vampire Angel—as punishment for his sin of envy, but he's still getting the hang of having fangs that get in the way when seducing women. Slaying demon vampires known as Lucipires and using his healing gifts as a cancer research doctor, Sigurd is sent to Florida's Grand Keys Island as a resident physician . . . where he encounters a sinfully beautiful woman.

The only hope Marisa Lopez has of curing her five-year-old daughter is a pricey experimental procedure. When she meets the good-looking doctor, Marisa is speechless. Then Sigurd tells her he believes he can help her daughter. Could this too-hot-to-resist Viking doctor be an angel of some sort sent to bring a miracle for her daughter? Or is he just a vampire bent on breaking Marisa's heart?

I received a ARC copy in exchange for a honest review, thanks to Edelweiss and Avon Books.

Marisa Lopez is determined to save her daughters life. Marisa has a five year old daughter that has a brain tumor, and the only operation that has any hope of saving her life, requires 170,000 dollars since it is a clinic in Europe. Marisa needs 70,000 and then she hopes that she will see her daughter grow up. So when she hears of a opportunity to serve as a waitress and a massage therapist for a week at Florida's Grand Keys Island, where a porn conference is going on, well Marisa is willing to do anything even work during such a conference to get some extra money toward her daughter. When she arrives, she meets Sigurd, a doctor and sexy as sin. Sigurd, a Vangel, has suffered from the sin "Envy", and he has been order by Michael, the Archangel, to come to the Island and find and slay demon vampires. He comes across a young woman, who has been tainted by them, because she is considering to committing a sin to save her daughters life. He must convince her to trust him so he can cleanse her with his bite, and share a passionate night with him. Easier said than done...even for a Viking Vampire Angel....but will Marisa find a safer and better way to save her daughter and find love at the same time....

I have to say that I honestly didn't know how much I would like this one...well I LOVED it!! There was so much I enjoyed about it...reminded me of Hill's older books. While reading this series, some books have been a struggle and others a great fun adventure...and boy was Viking in Paradise a barrel of laughs and viking fun!! One aspect that I really enjoyed seeing was having Sigurd as the hero. He is definitely dreamy, and the way he says things...are bound to make you laugh your head off when you least expect him to. He is so outrageous....but the way he is written brings about such a hilarioius outcome! The heroine....well I loved her, she was such a good heroine even if she is tempted to do certain things to guarantee her daughter's well being. From the beginning of the story, you sense the deep emotion from the circumstances, and with scenes of the little girl...your heart just breaks just a bit. I was on Marisa's side all the way. She is willing to work at a conference, as a waitress so she can get big tips, at least bigger than she would find at home. I love seeing how strong willed she is and determined to do anything to save her daughter, but she also draws a line for herself. The intereaction between Marisa and Sigurd was quite funny at times, but there are many sensual moments to get the blood pumping.

What I also loved about this story was the intrigue style of the plot, and how we see a sense of danger that is played out, and really brings Sigurd and Marisa closer together. What I would have liked to have seen was toward the ends we never see what happens with the Villains, and I would have liked to get a fully satisfying story instead of average satisfying. But the focus of the story is the love story and seeing these two come together and learning to trust in each other. The ending with the little girl met beyond my expectations...well all I will say is I ADORED how this book turned out...and I will admit I needed a tissue or two. Definitely left me with a smile on my face. Get ready ladies to enter a story filled with the passions of a island, sexy Viking hero, humor to have you laughing all day and some steamy interaction to blow you away SEXY AND FUN!!

The vangels are back in this steamy island adventure. One of the original brothers, Sigurd, is sent to investigate the demon activity on a secluded island in the Florida Keys. The heavenly but hedonistic paradise is inundated with demons that need to be eradicated.

Marisa Lopez is looking for a change. After a horrible break up, she decides to take the vacation planned for her and her fianacee alone. But as soon as she arrives, she gets on the bad guy's radar. The only thing standing between her and the demons...Sigurd...but Sigurd might just need her help when his back is up against the wall.

Passion and desire flare in this highly erotic romance by Sandra Hill. Some very interesting games are created for the guests of the “Grand Keys”.

The atrocities are upsetting and down right deplorable. I wanted a slow death for all the perpetrators, with the only redeemer being Marisa's and Sigurd's desire to bring them all down. I did cringe quite a few times and was uncomfortable with the non consensual sexual encounters.

White knuckle reading, with highly intense situations kept me riveted to the pages and on the edge of my seat. I found myself emotionally invested in the story and connecting to Marrisa's desire for justice. For that reason, I give Vampire in Paradise 5 stars.

I received this ARC copy of Vampire in Paradise from Avon in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for publication November 25, 2014.

This was one of those books that kind of left me scratching my head. The premise of Viking/Vampire/Angels is pretty ludicrous to start with and some of the situations are equally as silly BUT for some reason the plot seemed to grab me.

I mean it is hard to get around the "dying child and mother trying anything to save her" type plot. If general (and often misplaced) religious references offend you, this is not your series but I kept reading. I stopped for the night and when I got up the next morning I was thinking about it and wanted to get back to it and see what was going to happen.

The book throws a lot of roadblocks in front of any romance (and throws in just a wee bit of insta-love also) but while the plot is really off the charts stupid in a few places it is very serious in others and presents some serious thoughts on "what would you be willing to do for your dying child"

So in spite of myself I read it all, enjoyed it even when it was eye-rolling silly but if you are an OCD reader this ain't the book for you. Suspend your belief system and ignore a small bit of inconsistency and this will be an enjoyable reading experience, it was for me and typically I am much more critical but something about this one just appealed to me. I am going to read the Christmas novella from this series just to see if they are all like this. 4 Stars and I had fun reading it.

I was sent this book as an ARC for an honest review, and as I haven’t read the first 4 books in the series I felt like I was missing out on key information. Not because of the book but because I’ve missed so much from the first 4. With that said I did enjoy this book. Marisa is a wonderful character. Such a strong and protective mother. She would do anything to save her child. Yes even sleep with a man for money in hopes of gaining enough for a surgery for her Isabel’s brain tumor. You can feel her pain leaping off the page at you each time she thinks, talks or dreams about her little girl. Isabel is all she has. The father left when Marisa was pregnant and its just been the two of them, with the help of Marisa’s Cuban family of course.

In hopes of making a dent in the $70,000 she stills needs out of the $170,000, Marisa signs up to work a porn get together. Only not everything or everyone is what they seem. Demons, or what is known as Lucipires, walk among those at the festivial trying to turn those full of sins to their sides. Vangles (vampire angels) are there to try to stop the Lucipires, which brings us to the totally sexy Sigurd. Sigurd was turned in year 850 for his sins and forced to work off those sins. He is a vangle and fights demons and to try and save sinners. Sigurd is intrigued as soon as he meets Marisa, and since Marisa has the thought of committing a sin, well Sigurd has to save her. But by doing so what is the cost?

Sigurd is awesome. He is so funny and seems confused with the way the world works at times, which is odd because he is so old and been around for YEARS! He makes the book more light considering the things happening in the book. You can’t help but love him.

This book is full of passion and love. It is a page turner to say the least and when Sigurd and Marisa FINALLY start working together? Things are bound to be interesting.

I wasn't overly impressed by this book. Flat characters with little likability. Too many additional cast members appear with little relativity to the plot.

Another fun entry into the Viking vampire angel world. It is now Sigurd's turn for a special mission. He's being taken from his current job as a research doctor and sent to be the resident doctor at an island resort. It just so happens that this resort is to be the site of a Freedom of Expression convention (that's a convention dedicated to the pornography industry). Such a convention is a prime location to find Lucipires looking to grab more sinners for their own plans. Sigurd's mission is to stop as many as he can.

Marissa has a five year old daughter who is dying of a brain tumor. She has a chance for an experimental surgery in Europe but she needs $170,000 to do it. She still needs $70,000, so when she is offered a chance to work as a waitress and massage therapist at the convention, she takes it. She meets Sigurd on her first day there and the sparks fly - and not all are good ones. There's a definite attraction between them, but his high-handed attitude toward her plans makes her angry. She's not the type to sell her body, but she's willing to do anything to save her daughter.

Sigurd has to convince Marissa that what she's doing is wrong, and allow him to cleanse her of the taint of sin before the Lucipires get to her. It doesn't hurt that he's wildly attracted to her, and that the easiest way to convince her involves seduction and a long night together.

The interactions between them are great. Sigurd may be living in the 21st century, but he's still a Viking at heart, with a Viking's attitude toward women. He tries to dictate and Marissa is having none of it. He knows he's not supposed to get involved with her, but he finds he can't stay away. He's even willing to risk the wrath of Mike (Archangel Michael) to be with her. I loved seeing the way that Marissa stands up to Sigurd's decrees, determined that she will do whatever is necessary for her daughter. As she learns more of what Sigurd is fighting against, she wants to believe in him, but for her, her daughter comes first.

The part of the story dealing with the vangels versus the lucipires was terrific, with the way the danger was shown. I liked the slow buildup, as it starts with the mission then moves on to the action. With Marissa contemplating such a sin as to bring her to the attention of the bad guys, it added an extra layer of tension to the story. I liked Sigurd's determination to save her, in spite of her not really believing him at first. I worried about him during the battle and its aftermath, and had to laugh at his recovery actions.

I loved seeing the other vangels again and catching up with what they are doing. I especially enjoyed seeing how some of them were watching over Marissa when Sigurd couldn't be there. Armod, the Michael Jackson wannabe, is still one of my favorites. The ending was really sweet, and I loved Sigurd's conversation with Marissa's daughter when he visited her that night. I also had to laugh at Mike's frustration with Sigurd and the rest of the Vikings, but also loved how he is there for them when they need him. I loved his comments on vangels and wives, and what he said about the last two brothers, Harek and Cnut. I can't wait for the next book.

Vampire in Paradise by Sandra Hill This is my first time reading Sandra Hill’s work. I have heard about her, but never had the chance to read her work prior to this. I considered myself lucky to receive a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review. Although this is the fifth book in the Deadly Angels series, Vampire in Paradise can be read as a stand alone.I am a fan of paranormal romance and I love when authors bring a unique spin to the vampire genre, as such I was intrigued with the concept of a Viking vampire angel. I could not wait to sink my teeth into what I thought would be an exciting story. On completing this title I have to say that my introduction to Ms. Hill’s work turned out better than I expected. The story line is good and the characters are likeable.Vampire in Paradise tells the story of Sigurd, a Viking whose sin of envy led to him being transformed into a vampire angel aka vangel. Sigurd is a fierce warrior and a noted physician. He was sent to work undercover on the Florida Keys at a pornographic convention. His task is to destroy demon vampires who were seeking to convert as many sinners as they possible can. While on his mission he met Marissa Lopez, who was there to raise funds to save her daughter’s life. The interaction between was hilarious. It was clear that Marissa did not think much of Sigurd. She found him attractive, but she was not about to let him derail her plans. He on the other hand was determined to prevent her from taking that step as he knew her plan was dangerous. It placed her on the radar of the demon vampires.Vampire in Paradise depicts how the love of money can affect our moral compass and it shows the lengths a mother would go through to protect her child.I enjoyed this installment and I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series.

My heart just went out to Marisa completely, her baby girl has a brain tumor that she thought was inoperable. When she finds out that there is an experimental procedure that could help her, trouble is that she needs to raise a lot of money quickly. When a job opens up that could net her most of the money she needs, she wearily takes it but has to work a huge porn convention. Sig's sin is envy and it has caused him to do some really terrible things, which is how he wound up being a Vangel. He meets up with Marisa at the convention, where he is on the lookout for Lucipires.

I did get upset with Marisa at one point because she was going to do something that I didn't think she should do, but honestly I don't know what I would do if I were in her position. If one of my children needed something like this it's hard to say what I would do, but I'm glad that I don't have to choose!

Overall, Vampire in Paradise was a really good read. I may or may not have had my eyes fill up with tears towards the ending. Okay I totally did, but they were the happy kind. I jumped into this series late with the last novella and continued on with this one and I didn't have a hard time keeping up. Obviously these are meant to be read in order, and would be more enjoyable if they were read that way especially since the previous couples make appearances in this one. It was a funny read and yet still hot, and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Ms. Hill once again brings a fun hot Vangel story that I had to finish in one sitting. How can I not like a Viking Vampire Angel? An almost wacky twist on a vampire story that once again pulled me into their world from page one. I was curious how Sig’s story would go since his deadly sin is envy but I needn’t have worried. Marissa is a strong woman desperate to help her child by any means and it takes Sigurd’s stubbornness to counter that determination. A perfect match made in heaven. This story had all the elements I’ve come to love in her books. Danger, slimy bad guys, laughter and hot romance. Sig and Marisa’s story also made me tear up a few times, which is a testament as to how far I was pulled into the story and how much I liked them. The only bad part of this book is having to wait until the next one.

* You need to read previous entries to fully understand this story.

Sigurd Sigurdsson has been serving the archangel st. Michael as a vangel for centuries, him being punished for the sin of envy. So when he is send on a mission to the Florida Grand keys, he will attend a porno conference as the resident physician. The lucipires run rampant on the island, but when he meets the gorgeous Marisa Lopez, Sigurd cannot resist pursuing her. But Marisa has her own goal, securing the funds to send her daughter to a life-saving operation. Sigurd has his work cut out for him, because he might be the miracle Marisa needs.

Pro's:
+ The setting and the pace of this book is really fun. As most of this story plays out at a porno conference, you'll be chuckling along with the funny descriptions and industry characters along the way. The pace is nice and is kept along the same in the whole book, which makes it for a pleasant read.
+ Marisa Lopez is a very pleasing female lead, a little bit bad and with a heart as huge as the mount Everest. She will give up her own values to be able to save her daughter and I really appreciated that attitude. Marisa is gorgeous, but she also has the heart of a lioness and she will deal with everything that is thrown her away.

Con's:
- I really dislike envious characters and Sigurd Sigurdsson definitely takes the crown. For a 'strong male lead', he is very whiney and he gives of the feel of someone who'd rather has everything handed to him. He does turn around a bit in the end, but not enough to redeem himself for me.

Personally, I found this one of the lesser entries in this series thus far. Even though the female lead was very strong and likeable, the male lead was too dislikeable to really enjoy the story. I really dislike envious characters and I think that clearly shows in my score for this book. The setting of this book was awesome though, I don't think I've read a book before that took place on a porno conferance. The tie to religion made it even funnier, as these are topics that usually don't match on the same set of pages.

Stayed up way too late to see what happens. And well, stuff happens.

Sigurd appears to have finally learned to accept that he can't have it all rather than resenting it. And Mike is threatening to play matchmaker with the remaining two brothers. 'Course I suspect he's been doing that all along but.

The h - Marisa - has a terminally ill 5 year old daughter. There's a risky operation, deemed experimental so insurance won't cover it, and it costs $170k. She's raised 100k of that. So, the opportunity presents itself to be paid to well, prostitute herself for some creep obsessed with Sophia Loren. She reluctantly starts planning to go through with it. The H, OTOH, is there on a mission, and she's ah...well, he's determined to save her.

Lots of stuff happens and well, she learns to have a little faith while he learns that there are more important things in life than fancy cars, boats, etc. Also maybe learns that whining about what you don't have is a roadblock to getting anything.

What can I say? I smell lemons(you'll understand when you read this)! When the Archangel, Michael, assigns VikingVampireAngel (VIK's) Sigurd Sigurdsson to act as physician at a luxury resort for the next International Conference on Freedom of Expression it is a job created in hell, literally! It's a Porno convention Okay? But the jobs pay outrageously for the "hired help", which is why Marisa Lopez is going for two jobs on the island: waitress and massage therapist (the real kind). Marisa's 5 year old daughter is going to die without an expensive operation, Marisa will do anything to save her baby...ANYTHING! Marisa is marked by the demons over running the island as a future tenant of Hell. Sigurd needs to take down Satan's vampires or Lucipires as they are called, that's his job. What he doesn't expect is the beautiful Marisa, can he save her from herself? Will she be want to be saved if it means not coming up with the cash to save her babies life? I loved this humoresque look into the Adult Entertainment Industry.

“I pick number five. Full body massage,” he said, pointing to the sign on the wall.
“Why?”
“Why not? Methinks I have a kink in my…” He waggled his eyebrows, then said, “…shoulders.”
“Oh, just lie down. And shut up…”

Vampire in Paradise is Dr. Sigurd Sigurdsson’s story. And what a unique tale it is. Where else would you find a Viking vampire angel falling in love with a Cuban beauty on an island of sin? Why, in Sandra Hill’s Deadly Angels series, of course!

I’ll be honest and say that I haven’t read this entire series yet; just this title and book four, Kiss of Wrath. (It certainly isn’t for a lack of interest…but a lack of opportunity.) That didn’t stop me from completely enjoying Dr. Sig and Marisa’s wild romp together.

Envy is his sin, killing Lucipires is his job and his newest assignment has Sigurd on Grand Keys Island as a physician to stop the Lucipires’ newest recruitment scheme only he’s being distracted by Marisa, a young woman contemplating sin in order to save her daughter in this riveting paranormal romance. While this story of course has its emotionally gripping side, its exciting spine tingling dangerous side, and its red hot passionate side, it also has lots of humor and fun as the resort full of sinners (perfect setting for Luci’s right?) adds a few chuckles and snarky comments. Once again, I fell in love with a vangel, so now my sin is envy because I envy Marisa her Viking. Oh yeah and I enjoyed their story and I guess I’ll just have to wait for the next vangel to come along.

Another outstanding book by Sandra Hill! I absolutely love this series. The Vangels are the best of both worlds and the Grumpy Archangel Michael is an added bonus. The love story of Sigurd and Marisa was full of questions of whether Sigurd could stop Marisa from sinning.. It was also a sad story of Marisa's sick daughter who is dying of cancer and what a mother will sacrifice for her child no matter what it will cost her. But the miracle of Sigurd's love seems to find a cure for her daughter cancer thru a miracle from God. It was a wonderful story. A must read. Can't wait for the next installment.

Who could blame her that she would do anything to get the money for the operation of her daughter? Even if it is a sin?

Luckily she meets Sigurd who does want to help her, he only has a problem, he is a vampire. But he is one of the good guys.

Like the setting on the island. And like the things happening, not as heavy as in some of the other books in this series, less fights. But enough fun to read

Some books you read for its epice romance, some for enlightenment. This one is just for the steamy fun. If you've had a chance to read the other few in the series, you'll be familiar with the theme. So it is finally time for Sig be be revealed. #sighs&shivers and such a sweet end to a good story. I think I'll just read it again.

Another fun Viking angel story. I love this family. Michael sends Sigurd to an island on a mission. He is there for a porn convention. Boy is there lots of people to help there. Marisa is there to work to get enough money for her daughter to have a crucial operation to save her life. What Marisa has to do to get enough money may just put her soul in jeopardy. And the Lucies are watching her closely. So is Sigurd. Can she get the money without losing her soul? Can Sigurd find a way to save both Marisa and her daughter? Michael says no more life mates. Will he keep to that?

I enjoyed this installment of the Deadly Angels books. The setting of this story on an isolated island where a pornography convention was being held was unexpected. Physician vangel Sigurd meets his match in Marisa Lopez, a desperate single mom with a terminally ill child, who is trying to earn the money it will take for her daughter to have a life-saving operation.
