Dave Stern has written/edited/collaborated on multiple previous works of fiction/non-fiction, including the New York Times-bestselling biography Crosley, the epistolary novel Shadows In The Asylum, and an unauthorized Adam Sandler biography composed with the help of the good people in the Smith College Library. His most recent work is Codename: Blackjack, the second thriller in the Sagas of the Cincinnati series.
This is a book based on the Marvel character. In this one Wolverine is near Las Vegas in a wilderness park trying to find himself after losing his metal frame. He stumbles upon a nefarious plot that ties in with events from his past.
This was an easy read from this universe that explores the main character. I would say this is based more on the comic books than it is the movies. The book is told from the perspective of the present as we build up the the mystery of the story. We also get flashbacks where we see how the characters that are involved with the present story crisscrossed with Wolverine in the past. This is more of a character story than an action story. Do not get me wrong. There are action scenes but I feel the author did not do the best at portraying them. It could be me where I needed to see them visually. As for the character foray it is a nice look into the character and seeing how he is. Yes he is a rugged beast of a man on the outside but we see how he feels towards people who he cares for.
Nothing really remarkable here but a decent time with this character in this universe. I have read several of these Marvel paperbacks from this series and this one falls in the middle. It is definitely not the best one and not close to the worst one. It was one of those books where you say that it was a decent read but not earth shattering and you are ready to move onto your next read.
A fun Wolverine adventure with a few moments of genuine heart, though ultimately I felt jumping back and forth between time periods was unnecessary and the story did not make the best use of Logan's (mostly) depowered state.
I greatly enjoyed this book and is one of my favorite Marvel novels I've read. I really liked Logan's narration and how he described what was happening. It was very true to character and wasn't annoying at all. The pacing and plot were great and I'll be coming back to this one for sure.
Logan, a.k.a Wolverine, has lost a lot recently. His adamantium has been stripped from his body and his healing factor has left as well. On a quest to find himself after losing these pieces that made up his past, Logan discovers a conspiracy that will effect all mutant kind and he is the only person who can stop it as ghosts from his past begin to reappear.
I was a huge X-Men, specifically Wolverine, fan growing up. I thought this would be right up my alley as I knew the character. If you go in expecting a lot of familiar faces, you get very few. A bunch are mentioned and referenced, some you wouldn't expect to see in a Wolverine focused story but outside of one major character at the end, no other major characters appear. It takes place during a very specific time from the comics, which was later undone in a future arc, so it is very easy to place the story.
It is somehow very deep into Marvel lore, but also lacking in the lore one would want from a Wolverine story. The plot itself feels like it was originally thought up without the Marvel coat of paint but then it was thrown on top of it. It does pull from a lesser known, at least to me, period of Wolverine's life working for Department H in Canada. It really feel like the books was made for completionists who enjoyed a very specific run of the X-Men comic books.
It was interesting how the suspense kept building up. Gave me chills about how the metal was ripped out of him. It is something I would reccomend to others.
This takes place shortly after the events of Avalon. An intricate subterfuge involving the backlash of human hate against mutant kind. Plus an extra look into the past of Wolverine.
