I was captivated by When Memory Whispers, a companion story to Where Treasure Hides, which follows Marie's journey as an actress/spy during WW2, with a mix of action, suspense, and romance. It was a heartbreaking, yet hope filled story that had a satisfying and happy ending.

Suspense and emotions run high in this intriguing, heart-wrenching WWII espionage story which pulled me in from the beginning and kept me immersed for the entirety of the story. The dual-timeline format is expertly executed. Ms. Alexander skillfully incorporates authentic history into the fictional story, educating as well as entertaining. Endearing, memorable, complex characters came alive and jumped off the pages into my heart. I greatly appreciate the subtle, inspiring faith thread woven into the story. This book is an impressive, compelling companion to the Echoes of War Book 1 Where Treasure Hides and can easily be read as a standalone. I thoroughly enjoyed When Memory Whispers and highly recommend it as a historical romance must read.

This was an excellent historical suspense novel! Taking place during WWII with characters involved in espionage, this one sucked me in right away and had all of the great elements that kept me turning pages. This book starts in 1997 at a graveside where a "happenstance" meeting between a young woman and an old woman pull the tale from the past of love, of war, and of treason. The story told is about young Marie Wyatt, who finds herself in England during WWII and is recruited for both her beauty and her acting ability to play the part of a spy who passes along false information to the Germans. When she finds herself falling for a mysterious man whose motives are questionable, her judgement becomes clouded, creating new issues for her along the way.

This book had all the things going for it - wonderful characters, brilliant character development, an intriguing plot-line, an intense suspense line, all along a unique historical backdrop during WWII. Though this was what I would deem "Christian light" in that the faith thread was not front and center, there was a subtle faith thread in the background that came through in regular intervals and shined brightly at the end. I had tears as the story wrapped up at the end as the story was both beautiful and tragic. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and would easily recommend it to fans of historical fiction. This story sucked me in and kept my interest. It was fast paced and a lot happened. It was a bit complex at times and the time jumps took me a little while to understand, but overall it was an interesting way to tell Marie's story. I would definitely recommend reading this after Where Treasure Hides because it will add depth to the reading of this book. I enjoyed both books in this series, but I would describe them as slightly edgy for Christian historical fiction. There are no sexually explicit scenes though. The last line had me crying. It was a beautifully crafted ending.

This story is full of danger, covert meetings, hidden identities, spy craft, a seemingly impossible romance and searching for meaning and how God provides in difficult situations. It is a powerfully written lesson in resilience and a growing faith in God amid trying conditions in wartime and its aftermath. “ Not broken bits, they are delicate memories. Cherished memories.”

The story goes from 1997 back to 1944 but does it seamlessly. Marie Wyatt is Sparrow, a spy during WW2. She has placed herself in danger, been betrayed and then falls in love during the worst part of the war.

The characters are well-developed with lots of layers. I was drawn into the story right away. My heart ached for Marie and Rolf's predicament due to their ongoing love, in spite of their circumstances.

The historical details are weaved wonderfully, bringing the story to life. It's a wonderful story that will touch your heart.

When Memory Whispers by Johnnie Alexander is a simply wonderful Christian dual timeline novel. It is the second book in the Echoes Of War series and also part of the Mosaic Collection.
The novel is set during 1944 in London and in 1997 America, as a character looks back over her exploits during World War II. She has been silent for years, now is the time to release the secrets.
We witness the greatest sacrificial love in action. It is a love that goes so deep that for safety’s sake, the most treasured one must be released. Love over-rode a heart that wanted to hang on. Love let go.
We see that in times of war, characters either choose to cling to God or to run from God, as a character decares: “Where are you God? Don’t You care what’s happening to us?” In the devastation of war “she longed to believe God was listening.” In times of uncertainty “what does your strength rely on when the storm is raging?” We need firm foundations of faith or we will be lost. “Every day I choose to build my faith on solid rock.” God is that solid rock, that firm foundation.
In contrast with an unsure faith, we see a firm faith which reminds us of the words of Jesus’ disciple “where shall I go? Only You have the words of eternal life.” A character declares “I can’t blame God… Faith needs to be our light in these dark times.” In uncertain times we can rely on a certain God to give us “a contentment that had to come from God.” A character has firm foundations. “After all that he’d lost, he hadn’t forsaken God.”
Having a firm faith does not mean that characters are immune to suffering. “Most of [his] stories were buried deep inside and shared with-no one, though sometimes he relived them in sleepless nights.”
War leaves scars, scars that open in the night and disturb us, but when daylight comes, we know “God’s love shone upon them no matter how many clouds surrounded them.”
When Memory Whispers is an exciting book with spies, counter spies, double agents and suspicion lurking round every corner. Secrets and lies surround the characters who have to decide who is trustworthy.
We see a life controlled by lust and jealousy and a desire for revenge. It means that others must flee and keep on running.
All the characters were well drawn and believable. I got completely caught up in the action.
War produces uncertain times but we can always rely on a steadfast God.
When Memory Whispers was a powerful read. I will leave you with my favourite quote:

I was thrilled for a chance to read Johnnie Alexander's new book but I didn't know just how special this story would be! The characters experience pain, loss, and betrayal but they're still able to endure World War II, one of the most tumultuous times in history. Espionage is rampant and the intrigue is non-ending but there's also a chance that Marie Wyatt may even find her soul mate. Danger prevails, so how will her story end?

This is an engaging tale with endearing but fallible characters who often baffled me by their actions! I couldn't read fast enough to discover the destiny of this young woman who learned her ABCs in her home in the Southern hills of Ohio but ended up as an actress and spy in England and France in 1944. Much of the story is set during the years during and following WWII but I especially loved the emotional connection that developed between Marie and a young woman that she met by chance in 1997. If you're looking for a page-turning and thought-provoking story filled with history, suspense, and romance, grab a copy of When Memory Whispers! It's a companion to Where Treasures Lies but can be considered a standalone.

When Memory Whispers is a frame tale of sorts. Each section of the book starts with a chapter in 1997. The rest of the book takes place in World War II, starting in 1944. The modern portion of the story doesn’t seem to be connected at first but as the story proceeds, readers discover just how connected the two timelines really are.
There are several character carryovers from the first book in the series but I did not feel like I was missing any information. Alexander does a great job of letting the readers know what they need to know in order to understand the story.
For those interested in the mystery and intrigue of World War II, the double agents and spies who play prevalent roles in this story will make for an interesting read.
While When Memory Whispers is an adult historical fiction novel, there is nothing that would keep it from a K-12 Christian school library. I would mark it for high school only because of the various war events represented in the story.

This incredible book is sure to draw you in and not let go until you reach that final page. The spy life was one of excitement and danger. Always with the possibility that you would be found out and either incarcerated or killed. For Marie Wyatt, this was like playing a role on the stage, something she was very good at. Fortunately for her, she had a number of different people who rescued her when things went awry. Secrets and leaving those you loved were the hardest part in all of this.

The author seamlessly takes the reader between wartime and the time when memories and secrets must be shared. Where is the truth in a time of war? Does the spy reveal everything or are some things best held back? Can one live with the guilt? Learning to live with the Hope set before us….

This excellent, heartbreaking World War II story was well-researched and written with such loving detail that I was instantly transported to 1940s England and the United States. This book had a dual timeline beginning in the 1990s, where Annalee looked back to her eventful life during the war by telling a young lady named Jenna her story. The awful circumstances the characters had to endure were tragic and heart wrenching, so it was easy for me to sympathize with them and hope that those responsible for the evil received consequences for their crimes. I have seldom seen such expert writing in historical fiction where the story seemed to be ripped right from the pages of history. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys historical fiction with an emphasis on God and His sovereignty.

Years ago, when Johnnie Alexander released the first book in this series, Where Treasure Hides, I felt absolutely bereft at the unresolved ending. Then when I saw the sequel, When Memory Whispers, I jumped at the chance to find out what happened to the characters I had fallen in love with. As I turned page after page of this spectacular story, I met a new hero and heroine, both of whom enveloped me in the intrigue of World War II espionage. Complete with characters from the first book, my mind grappled to solve the twists and turns of the fast-paced romance. I absolutely enjoyed everything about this book: the plot, the characters, and the abiding love filling the pages. I can only hope a third book will be coming soon!

I LOVED this book!!! I learned that there were POW camps for German and Italian soldiers in my home state of FL, that I never learned about in school. Marie is actually younger than what people think, as she lied about her age to go with the USO to Europe. She's given different tasks, and when one takes a bad turn, she's rescued by a German agent. She meets a few more times, and when she learns he's been taken captive, she follows him to the States and then to Florida. This book is a must read! There were quite a few twists I didn't see coming!!

This was the most amazing story. It weaved back and for from WW2 to 1998, and I could not imagine until ALMOST the end of the story, where it was going. How hard for these people, serving their country for as Sparrow and Frost. My heart bled for them as much seemed so unfair. One thing I wondered... When and how did Frost (Rolf) die??
This story also showed, dedication, love and a respect, with faith in God's Word.

What a story filled with pain, tragedy, intrigue, tears, action, and romance. Johnnie did a beautiful job keeping this story's threads tightly woven (if messily) together. Even when the tattered ends poked out everywhere the next twist came--and the next. So often it appeared all hope had vanished. I loved the dual timeline and seeing a bit of Annalee's heart mended. You'll have to read this one so I don't give away spoilers by sharing anything more. 5 stars!

This is a dual time-line story. Annalee Gilbert tells a story to Jenna. The reader is quickly drawn into the story, going back in time along with Jenna from 1997 to the WWII era. I received an Advance Reader Copy and am leaving a review of my own free will.
