This collection of plays was surprisingly good. Many of them served as the basis of great musicals such as Porgy and Bess and The Most Happy Fella. But beyond that, they are very compelling plays that serve as unexpectedly authentic sources for the American state of mind of the period. I especially loved Porgy which, sadly, is still an incredibly relevant play with themes such as racism, domestic abuse, drug addiction, and ablism. I would love to see this play in its original form simply for the historical songs that are peppered throughout.
