Book by Doppo, Kunikidaكونوكيدا دوبو هو شاعر رومانسي وكاتب قصصي ياباني يعود لعهد الميجي، وهو من الآباء المؤسّسين للمذهب الطبيعي في الأدب الياباني. إنّ أعمال دوبو القصصية –ذات الصبغة الذاتية– في غالبها ما هي إلّا مرآة لتجاربه الشخصية التي مرّ بها في حياته القصيرة.
تتناول أغلب أعمال دوبو التراجيدية موضوع الانتحار. وكونوكيدا باعتباره شاعر من شعراء الحركة الرومانسية، لم يستطع مقاومة النهاية التراجيدية في أعماله القصصية. ففي قصّة سديم النهر، تمثّلت التراجيديا بفكرة الهروب. عندما سافر تويوكيشي باحثًا عن النجاح وعاد خائبًا إلى بلدته لم يستطع المضي قدمًا مع حزنه وبؤسه، الأمر الذي قاده إلى الهروب داخل السديم المجهول. وبالرغم من أنّ النهاية تُركت مفتوحة إلى القارئ، إلّا أنّها لا تخلو من التراجيديا.

Adore el cuento del que se va de su ciudad natal y el del escritor y el pintor que platican en la posada. Que bonito escribe Kunikida. Me pareció una grata sorpresa.

Antes de empezar este libro leí una reseña que decía que había estado esperando leer con tranquilidad el ejemplar de Doppo, y coincido.
Me hice un mate y leí. Son pequeños relatos que cuando terminas uno tenes que dejarlo a un costado, procesar el capítulo y seguir.
Mi favorito "personas inolvidables".

Meses enteros esperando un descanso para poder leer con la tranquilidad necesaria a Doppo Kunikida...

Un primer contacto bastante existoso porque disfruté muchísimo los siete cuentos que reúne el tomo.

Al igual que Shinkai, Kunikida le da importancia a las sensaciones que provoca la naturaleza, sin que sean éstas las protagonistas de la acción; pero si, parte necesaria de la atmósfera a la cual intenta transportarnos.

El cuento que más me gustó fue "Personas inolvidables" porque pone en palabras (y vivencias) algo que les debe haber pasado a todes al menos una vez: recordar a una persona de la cual conoces nombre, edad, procedencia (ni lo harás) por el mero hecho de estar en un momento y lugar que fue importante para vos. Pero que por ese motivo forma parte irremediable de la escena y del recuerdo.

Otra cosa que destaco de esta obra es su traducción al español pero con toques más argentinizados y no tan rígidos como el castellano (español).

Estoy feliz de poder aprovechado los días de descanso para disfrutar de Doppo y sus encuentros con la esencia humana y la naturaleza.

Este fue mi primer acercamiento a la literatura de Kunikida y lamentablemente no conocte con ella como quería. No es que los cuentos fueran malos, solo pienso que en su mayoría no fueron para mí. Igualmente siento que pude disfrutarla de alguna manera.
Me gustó como Kunikida describe sus historias mediante sensaciones ya que el autor pertenecía al movimiento naturalista japonés. Pero esto último también fue mi mayor problema porque de vez en cuando sentía que no podía concentrarme (de nuevo, creo que el problema soy yo y no el autor).
Mi çuento favorito fue El viejo Gen. Me conmovió mucho.

خب، با خوندن این کتاب کمکم دارم به پایان ماراتونِ "سگهای ولگرد بونگو"م نزدیک میشم >.<
ولی جدای از اوتاکو بودن، عجب قلمی! عجب داستانی! عجب فضایی! واقعا لذت بردم. ادبیات ژاپن از اون چیزاس که هرگز برام تکراری نمیشه.

Not the most fun I've had with a collection of short stories, but they do their thing.

LA NIEBLA DEL RIO (PARTE 1)

Está es la primera parte de la reseña de este libro de cuentos de DOPPO KUNIKIDA, el cual es editado por También el Caracol, y que nos muestra a un autor que está enmarcado entre el naturalismo y el romanticismo, y que para este autor estás tendencias se revelan en sus relatos y donde el autor creía en la vida sencilla y ordinaria en la naturaleza, que le permitía descubrir un mundo nuevo en las cosas insignificantes.
De los siete relatos contenidos en este libro, resumiremos brevemente los primeros cuatro.
FOGATA: es un relato desarrollado en invierno donde la melancolía se plasma en niños y el anciano. El fuego es el elemento natural y protagonizó dónde de manera poética existe una añoranza y una visión del lugar del hombre en la naturaleza y en la sociedad.
PERSONAS INOLVIDABLES: Este es un relato protagonizado, por Otsu, el cual nos plantea una conversación con otro personaje (. Hashioji) el cual, le platica sobre un escrito de personas inolvidables, que se conocen un instante y, y que reflejan algo de él. ( Estas personas no tienen que ver con el) . En este cuento el autor nos plantea ideas filosóficas vinculadas al encuentro entre personas.
LA PUERTA DE BAMBÚ: es un relato triste donde hay una lucha por sobrevivir, se marcan las diferencias sociales entre dos familias y que solo las divide una puerta de bambú. Aquí se nos muestra un drama que termina en tragedia, y donde la vida continúa para los sobrevivientes como si nada hubiese pasado.
FANTASMAS: dos pequeños relatos acerca de cómo desaparecen las personas de nuestra vida. O más bien la idea de la elección de las personas de desaparecer de la vida de los demás. ( Umeko desaparece de la vida de Bunzo y en el otro relato "El" desaparece de la vida del narrador)
En esta primera parte, vemos una variedad de relatos, pero en el que está marcado un ambiente natural en el que se desarrolla cada una de las historias, se hace la ciudad o el campo, detalles muy característicos, en los cuales el autor nos muestra la naturaleza del hombre, frente a otro ser humano o ante la sociedad....
EL VIEJO GEN: este relato habla sobre la vida de un viejo barquero, donde la misma naturaleza provoca la muerte de su esposa e hijo. En esa nostalgia El anciano adopta un vagabundo, Y dónde la misma sociedad se olvida de estas personas. El viejo gen es compasivo y trata de salvar al joven vagabundo Kishu. Aquí el término de Aware se aplica tanto a la nostalgia como a la compasión.
LA NIEBLA DEL RIO : este relato está basado en la vida de Toyokichi que después de su fracaso en Tokio regresa a su pueblo natal, ahí los recuerdos comienzan a revivir con esa nostalgia, pero también está su deseo por huir. Asimismo Se observa un contraste entre lo viejo y lo nuevo.
LOS SUBURBIOS: este relato es de tres historias aisladas que comparten una misma localidad, se ve el paso de la vida y la muerte entre estas historias. Tanto en la historia del maestro de primaria, Cómo la del pintor, y la de los dueños de la verdulería.
Este libro nos permite reconocer ideas muy claras del naturalismo japonés, pero también nos permite analizar de una forma interesante rasgos inherentes al autor DOPPO KUNIKIDA. Una lectura muy trágica para Los amantes de la literatura japonesa.

Lo disfruté MUCHÍSIMO me parece una antología que en cada historia trata de hacer un abordaje narrativo muy interesante, ningún cuento se parece a otro. Tal vez el hecho de que empezara con "La fogata" fue un tanto "desencaminador" ya que personalmente sentí a la historia más como una narrativa de color en cierto aspecto, pero ya desde "Personas inolvidables" (mi favorito en cuanto a lo que me dejó como aprendizaje) ya uno está totalmente absorto en lo que escribe Kunikida.
Mis otros favoritos son "La puerta de bambú", "El viejo Gen" y "Fantasmas", en ese orden, creo que tengo un favoritismo por las historias con finales más melancólicos que te hacen replantearte si la vida vale totalmente la pena vivirla, el cual es un planteo muy recurrente en los autores de esta época. Pero en particular con Kunikida me pasó que supo guardar la tragedia hasta el momento exacto en que debiera pasar, haciendo una construcción muy meticulosa de acciones hasta desembocar en ese final que te hace repensar lo que anduvo sucediendo para que finalizara así. (Quiero recalcar esto porque otros autores como Dazai o Soseki hasta lo que he leído de ellos desde un principio ya te plantean el tono lúgubre de sus historias, en el caso de estos relatos de Kunikida fue mucho más escalonado).
¡Lo recomiendo muchísimo! Me parecieron relatos super bien logrados y super sencillos de leer, la mayoría los leí viajando en tren y casi que me daban ganas de dejar pasar mi estación para poder terminar cada relato antes de bajarme, léanlo.

que hermosa la escritura de kunikida :') lo leí de a ratitos, de a momentos calmos y cálidos acompañada casi siempre del sol y del cielo. muchos relatos de esta antología se me grabaron en el cuerpo y no sé si alguna vez los pueda sacar de mi sistema. hay historias hermosas y otras tan trágicas y melancólicas que resulta hasta triste pasar la página. recomiendo mucho, creo q este libro llegó en el momento justo de mi vida, mental y emocionalmente hablando así q lo disfruté un montón. una lectura muy otoñal y bella bella

Kunikida Doppo (1871-1908) was born in Choshi (Chiba) and studied English literature at the precursor of Waseda University. Inspired by the poetry of Wordsworth, in the mid-nineties he started writing lyric poetry. He was also a convert to Christianity. His early works include a diary (Azamukazaru no ki) and a new-style poetry collection.
After an unhappy marriage that ended in divorce in 1896 (and that became the basis for the plot of Arishima Takeo's 1919 novel A Certain Woman), he withdrew from the community of Christian social reformers. Instead, he became a close friend of the writer Tayama Katai.
In the late nineties, he started writing short stories, first collected in 1901 as Musashino. He became well-known for his lyrical evocation of natural scenes, although there is also a neurotic form of introspection in his work.
Several of his later stories are often seen as precursors of Japanese Naturalism. According to Karatani Kojin, Doppo was the first fully modern writer for two reasons: his descriptions of external nature, and his introspection, his internal consciousness (paired with the genbun itchi style). Excellent stories in this collection are "Takibi" (The Bonfire), "Wasureenu hitobito" (Unforgettable People), "Gyuniku to bareisho" (Meat and Potatoes), "Jonan" (Woman Trouble), and my personal favorite, the bittersweet "Kawagiri" (River Mist).
Also famous is "Gen Oji" (Old Gen), the first short story by this author. Although Doppo would become known for his use of the genbun itchi style, this first story is still written in the neo-classical language. The story is based on materials Doppo gathered while working as English teacher in a small town in Kyushu, but the major inspiration was Wordsworth's pastoral poem Michael. Old Gen is a boatman who adopts a vagrant boy after the death of his own son. He attempts to communicate his fatherly feelings, but the wild boy is unable to respond. In the end Old Gen hangs himself, but the idiot boy still understands nothing. More than for its sentimental plot, the story is interesting for its nature descriptions, such as an effective evocation of a storm that wrecks the boat of Old Gen. One can say that Doppo tried to discover the meaning of life in nature, which is also clear from "Musashino," a story written in 1898, about the landscape of Musashino in the outskirts of Tokyo. That landscape was not particularly famous or striking, but that was exactly the point, for Doppo saw beauty in ordinary things and ordinary persons. "Musashino" is a beautiful piece of impressionistic writing.
Doppo died at age 37 of tuberculosis. Doppo's stories are part of the canon.

My favorite of this collection is definitely Old Gen. There's something about Doppo Kunikida that has always engaged me, but Old Gen specifically is written in a way I keep forgetting its someone telling a story instead of a narrative following Gen. Everything he writes is beautiful to me, and I heavily suggest reading this as many times as you can.
Wait just long enough to be reminded how descriptively wonderful Kunikida is as an author. I wish I could express my thoughts like he does.
I still have a few grievances, such as translation errors that should have been caught in editing or proof-read and pointed out. This is not AO3, we have beta readers. But that is not an issue with Kunikida, but with the copy I own and the translator. Whom, I will not name. But you know who you are.
Thank you Bungou Stray Dogs and Devil May Cry for making me unironically enjoy classics again like Kunikida and William Blake. I will get my hands on Kunikida's complete works eventually, but River Mist and Other Stories has a collection of almost all my favorites.
Wait just long enough to be reminded how descriptively wonderful Kunikida is as an author. I wish I could express my thoughts like he does.
I still have a few grievances, such as translation errors that should have been caught in editing or proof-read and pointed out. This is not AO3, we have beta readers. But that is not an issue with Kunikida, but with the copy I own and the translator. Whom, I will not name. But you know who you are.

Me gustó el libro 📖 . Ayuda a adentrarte en la escritura japonesa. Y te da un disclaimer al inicio.
Te da contexto al inicio en el prefacio sobre la historia del autor y eso se agradece mucho. La traducción ayuda a travesar al otro lado del planeta ayudando a la interculturalidad literaria; que lo hace facinante y gratificante.
El tema recurrente es el suicido no de manera literal sino casi filosófica; implícita. Es fascinante como escribe el autor para no ser tan crudo o llegando al morbo. Me gustó su escritura. Los personajes son humanos no planos tienen sus virtudes y defectos.
Como es ligero te ayuda por si tienes un bloqueo lector. Me gustaría leer más de el. Además fue un regalo 🎁❤️🫣 le aprecio más todavía.

As night advanced, the sky and the earth seemed to draw gradually closer together and one by one the stars sought to return to the heavens from which it had come. Silence reigned over all and there was only the smoke from the poet's bonfire rising steadily into the sky.
In spring the fresh greenery almost gushes from the trees.
To tell the truth, as it makes no difference one way or the other I sometimes wish that I could make a definite choice, but because of some twist of fate I am clinging to one unusual wish.
I particularly liked Gen Oji, Hoshi, Hibon naru Bonjin, and Gyuniku to Bareisho.

Kunikida tiene ese algo que muy pocos escritores tienen, escribe de la vida cotidiana y de los problemas no tan cotidianos. Te hace pensar en esas personas en las que no piensas tan seguido o no sueles considerar.
EDIT: recomiendo el cuento "fantasmas" si te quieres sentir particularmente solo

I thought this collection was lovely. the contextualizing intro was so helpful, as was the biography! I found the translation to be kind of dry, which made some of the more poetic pieces lose something, but the plots and characters of the short stories still shine. favorites were: old gen, musahino, the stars, bird of spring, and meat and potatoes!

Some stories were perhaps a little confusing to me (maybe a mistranslation or vague translation on our part), but some others were actually fascinating. Aside from that, all stories had absolutely stunning visualizations and descriptions.Very detailed. Lovely read.

Sublime. Una gran recopilación de cuentos del gran Kunikida Doppo. Cuentos que quizás se sienten normales, como algo que podría pasar todos los días, pero justamente eso los hace excelentes. Una representación no solo de la duda humana respecto al mundo al que se enfrenta, sino también del interior que nos complementa...o contrapone.

Me gusta bastante la escritura de Kunikida. Tiene una forma muy romántica y poética en la que se expresa sobre la naturaleza, lo cotidiano y siento que es fácil sumergirse en los escenarios que describe.
