the 6' total catch who swept me off my feet last night.
Sleepy little Cryptic Cove is just the break I sunshine, salt air, and beach parties ‘til the sun rises. On break from a career as a plus-sized dancer in Hollywood, I’m not even here to hook up.
But once I spot Pacari with his piercing green eyes, abs like armor, and thighs I’d love to sink my teeth into, I have better plans.
Only problem he’s gone with morning like the infamous mists of Cryptic Cove.
But the memory of his mouth between my legs sure as heck isn't.
Next time I see him, his hands are all over other people, but his eyes never leave mine. And once he leaves the room, no one seems to remember him.
Except for me.
When I catch him with yet another person outside the bar, I'm left with some big
Why is he messing with other people if he can't take his eyes off me,
What the heck is that monster between his legs
--And how do I get on it?
Hot Summer’s Prey is the first book of the Wet Hot Monster Summer series, a mystery monster romance novel featuring a cheery, plus-sized Filipina dancer and an environmentalist, sex-worker adjacent sea creature as their worlds collide like a tidal wave. Caution — Splash You May Get Wet.
A California native, Latrexa has always seen the weird in the world and seeks to share their outright lust for the strange and unusual. Their hobbies include sculpting unnatural horrors and running from their inner demons. Latrexa writes for the weirdos, heavily featuring darkness and off-beat humor.
This was a fun read! Teresa had all that chaotic sunshine energy and an awesome friend group that grounded her, supported her, and were silly with her. Pacari was absolutely dedicated to his save the reef project and in some hot water (haha get it?) because of the deal he made with the resident sea witch to recover what was destroyed. He also had some good friends, though we didn’t see a lot of them in this book. His loneliness was heartbreaking and it was so sweet to see him blossom when Teresa was able to see him. The spice was inventive and fun. I’m looking forward to the next book!
Spice: 4/5
Triggers: sex work adjacent, using another person to make other person jealous (making out, handsiness, mentions of fat phobia including in workplace, side character grief about loss of loved one, threat of hypothermia, brief threat of pressure sickness, trapped in cave, earthquakes, threat of murder, depressive episode (side character), magic induced memory loss, mentions of animal death
Like reverse little mermaid but with more monsters and monster dong. This was such a fun read and holy heck a novel from Latrexa? Our prayers of geoduck inspired dong have been answered! Latrexa’s stories are filled with magic, a little mayhem and ✨science✨ a combination I have coined as the Latrexa Effect. You get horny for science and super cool characters that also make you wet. Hot Summer’s Prey makes an epic splash (down below too if you catch my drift) and is the perfect summer read. Pacari is seriously such a cool MMC and I love him to pieces. The human crew is wild and so much fun and I cannot wait to read all of their stories! Special pearl necklace anyone? 👀✨
wowie. this was unexpected. I go into this ARC just thinking it's a simple little firey monster romance book but nope! I was pleasantly surprised with the whole man-hating sea witch who's definitely lesbian and in love with the dead abuella as well as the mystery plot on the side. 🤣 this book was so cute. there was so much representation and diversity it was impossible not to love it. Teresa was the FMC and she's plus sized and proud as she should be! She was so confident it was impossible not to love her as well. She is loud and proud so when she meets naked Pacari on the beach you know it's gonna be a wild ride🤭literally Pacari was the MMC and he was a yacunayi whose job is to seduce humans and harvest magic from their lust. how convenient 🤭 you see, the thing is the humans forget him when he's gonna but not Teresa and he wants her magic 🐱. 👀🤭 these two were so cute together and that mirror scene. good heavens. That was so hot, I was blushing. however, I do think I need a full diagram explaining how his sifon changan cock thing works. I should've expected a special cock considering I read jacked up by Latrexa 🤣 Anyway I really did love this book and I desperately want more of all these characters. specifically of kalixto🤭
I received this as an ARC and really enjoyed it. First book by Latrexa Nova that I’ve read and I’m honestly looking forward to more in the series. This is more of an insta-love than I’d prefer, but since it’s a shorter book I get it. The story is really good and I really enjoyed Teresa (FMC) and Pacari (MMC).
Love me a good monster romance and I’d never heard of the kind of sea creature Pacari is, so that was a fun new angle for the more classic monster romance. I’d say this is probably a 4 🌶️ for spice, but take that with a grain of salt since I do think my spice meter is skewed 😆. Also enjoyed the twist of the Lantern Witch (not a spoiler, you learn about her at the beginning). Hoping down the line we learn a bit more about her and why she seemed so attached to Zephyr’s grandma (one of Theresa’s friends).
This was a sweet and cozy read! I love that Teresa is body positive and unashamedly herself the entire book. Pacari just loves so hard. He loves his woman, his garden, and all the creatures.
I also love the inclusion and diversity of the characters in this book. It was refreshing to read.
Lastly, I need more scenes and descriptions of Pacari's sifon....for science 👀
3 ⭐️ A fun, little summer monster-romance! I found Latrexa Nova’s newest book very creative and entertaining. My favorite of all the characters was Pacari, our seacreature that falls for the FMC. His vibe and description was very fun, and he was such a sweetheart. I loved the representation of various characters, and I’m looking forward to the next entry in this series to get to know the other friends of Theresa and Pacari. I thought that for the length of the book (200 pages) we were introdused to in my opinion way too many characters, and I sometimes had trouble remembering who was who, and their storyline. And speaking of storylines, there was a few too many. I would have loved for the book to just focus on the struggles with e.g. the sea witch, and maybe have the other storylines for another book. If the book was longer maybe it would have worked better, but it made me not as invested as I could have been. Overall Hot Summers Prey was an entertaining, very creative and fun book, and if you love sea creatures, steamy scenes in a cave, cute side characters and friendship, this is a book for you!
A huge thank you to Latrexa Nova for giving me an ARC for this book! 🖤
Hot Summer’s Prey This is a review of an ARC that was given for free and I’m reviewing this book voluntarily. Stars ⭐️ 4/5 Spice 🌶️ 3/5 - Teresa is a human dancer on a vacation to cryptic cove with her four best friends. Pacari is a sea creature that has made an agreement with a man-hating sea witch to save his underwater garden and other sea friends after an earthquake. He does this by becoming a sex-worker. The sea witch is after the magic that comes from intimate moments with sexual partners. - Teresa is sassy, funny, and a confident bad bitch! Pacari is a complete cinnamon roll who just absolutely loves his woman. - Some topics you can expect in the book: grieving, mentions of death, mates, sex work, protective friends, fatphobia, and bisexual main characters (see a full list in book). - I finished reading this book in a day and absolutely loved it. I laughed during multiple points in the book because of the dialogue between characters. The book has plenty of humor, spice and a splash of mystery. Can’t wait for the rest of the series to come out!
Have you been craving a Little Mermaid type romance story? Look no further! Latrexa gives us Sea Monsters, Sea Witches, a Plus Size FMC and mystery!
I love Pacari and Teresa! They were so perfect for each other and so perfect on their own too. A bad ass confident Plus Size FMC is something we don't get enough of.
wipe my memory and let me read this again. holy shit. what an incredible story. hot and confident bisexual plus sized fmc who is flirty and perfect plus a hot and magical bisexual mmc who matches her freak perfectly???? i’m obsessed. a must read this summer and every summer to come. cannot WAIT for the next book!!!!
I had the most fun reading this book from a new-to-me author :))))) It was so adventurous and romantic and funny and had a cast of characters that makes me super excited for more books in the Wet Hot Monster Summer series (THAT NAME. GETS ME. KINDA MADE FOR ME).
There was a lot about the ocean and deep sea lore going on in this story that I don't even know if it was fiction or non-fiction… I would believe both. Pacari’s setting in the ocean, his garden, his underwater friends, the Lantern Witch… that shit was all so fun and captivating like… kind of what reading about space is like in an Andy Weir book; just seem’s factual lol. THE SEX CAVE!!!!!! There’s a sex cave. Allll the smut in this book is hot as fuck.
Teresa is my favourite, ideal plus-size representation in a character because she is confident, loves herself, and revels in finding her body beautiful AESTHETICALLY. I love when a fat character is allowed to be in love with their body physically and not just be able to say theyre worthy by ‘what’s on the inside is what counts’. There is MIRROR SEX, so you can imagine the body worship i’m talking about hehehehehe. She was also a fit fat character with a physically demanding job (dancer), but it was written in such a way that I didn’t feel the author was saying being fit and fat was superior to being not fit and fat.
The friend group is made up of such interesting and diverse friends. My favs were Zephyr who is nonbinary and has inherited the beach house that everyone is on vacation in, and Dawn who is I think autistic and obsessed with mysteries. And there’s a MYSTERY at the heart of this story. I just loved that the friends took care of each other and they had space to both celebrate each other’s differences, and also get frustrated by them at times, because that’s honestly reality in a neurodivergent friend group.
4.25 rounded to 4 stars!

Small Business BookTok ARC Reviews #75: Hot Summer’s Prey” by Latrexa Nova
Note: This ARC was given to me for free by the author and I am reviewing this book voluntarily.
Teresa is a dancer taking a break from the spotlight of Hollywood to be in the light of the summer sun. Pacari is a sea creature who disguises himself in the world above in search of intel at the request of a cryptic Sea Witch. When these two paths cross, sparks will fly, and they'll be making more than just waves!
From the author of the viral Horror Romance “Jacked Up”, Latrex Nova delivers a first installment in a brand new Monster Romance series that combines elements of “The Shape of Water” and “The Little Mermaid”! For me, this was quite the enjoyable, page-turning read as it not only delivers on the summer romance tension and underwater spice, but a powerful lesson on self-love and body positivity and a celebration of Intimacy in plus-size communities! Teresa and Pacari work so well together in their chemistry and they both learn from each other that they are loved, deserved to be loved, and shouldn't settle for less of the respect than they deserve. Did I also mention there's an adorable slug that can transform into a puppy? If you're looking to dive into this fantastic read, you can check out this book online now!
Rating: 4/5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice Meter: 5/5 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶
Tropes to Expect: Opposites Attract, Fish Out Of Water, Cute Animal Sidekick, Plus-Size/LGBT+/Filipino Representation, Intimacy Dancer Sea Monster x Intimacy Dancer, Secret Sea Monster Society, Sea Witch Antagonist, Summer Romance, and Mystery Fantasy.
Trigger Warnings: Depictions of Sexism, Mentions of Body Shaming and Bullying, and Depictions of Memory Loss (Full Description can be found at the beginning of the book).
This is a zero spoiler review! Story: 5/5 Spice Quality: 4/5 Characters: 4/5
Story: I won’t repeat what the book is about - you’ve read the blurb. So let’s get to it! Overall, the story was good. Well thought out and intriguing, and I’m stoked to follow this series and learn more about everything! All in all, plot wise you will be left wanting in the best possible way.
While the science of everything is so cool it took me a hot minute (and occasionally some googling) for some of the sea creature terminology. That being said, I genuinely found it fun to learn so much about various sea creatures.
Characters: I only take this down a notch because diversity is wonderful and fun, but sometimes it feels like diversity for the sake of it? My friend group is definitely eclectic and diverse, so it was very appreciated, but occasionally felt like it was trying to hit every single sub-group. Not necessarily a bad thing, but you can go from zero representation to overcompensation in a heartbeat. Ya know?
Spice: This was only dropped because there were some scenes where I had a really hard time visualizing some things, or it felt a tad rushed. Other than that, nice and spicy with unique peen qualities. As an avid lover of ‘The Shape of Water’ this was definitely satisfying.
Overall, a fantastic story that is more than just a spicy read. There is mystery and setup for continuing stories. Please read your content warnings! I definitely don’t regret reading it and look forward to the next one.
Who would have thought that you would find the man of your dreams naked on the beach, and even more, that you would spend one of the best nights of your life in a sex cave, and then he would leave for reasons unknown to you? A mythological creature whose only desire is to rebuild his garden and, above all, provide a home for sea creatures, is forced to work for an evil witch as a sex worker. A refreshing read, especially for this summer, full of adventure, mystery, and lots of spice, but most importantly, interesting with a new anatomy. Teresa is a ray of sunshine and super sassy—I loved her attitude. She has a group of friends who protect her and are always there for her. I loved their integration into the story. I can't wait to see each of them in this saga. I know there will be stories about them, and I can't wait to read them. Pacari is a complete plant daddy, super sweet with both Teresa and everyone else. His anatomy is super interesting; you will be constantly amazed. I enjoyed this book a lot and I’m looking forward for the second one.
I want more!!! I want more of Teresa and her wonderful confidence in herself and her worth. I want more of Pacari and his utter devotion to Teresa and her wellbeing. I want more of their hot but deep insta love.
*Le sigh* When a plus sized FMC is written loving her body BEFORE she meets her partner and goes into it knowing that her worth isn’t in her weight? I’m already in love. Teresa is a bad bitch and she knows it. Flaunts it even. And I couldn’t be more grateful as a plus sized woman myself. The way he adores her? Worships her body? I was literally squirming.
Hot. HOT I TELL YOU!
But anywho…
The plot line was fantastic as well and I loved each of Teresa’s friends. I love a supportive group of people who all just on an intimate level understand each other. I loved the element of mystery and the tension we got a peak of between Zephyr and Kalixto?? What was that all about? I’m already foaming at the mouth for the next book. Wonderfully written and hot as hell spice. Plus we love queer romance.
This is my first read by Latrexa and I am in love with the story and characters she created!!!
Teresa is a dancer who came to Cryptic Cove with her friends for some time away to relax. When she spotted Pacari, other thoughts came to mind that had nothing to do with relaxing. I adore this woman so much - she’s fun, confident, ballsy and has a love for adventure that had me smiling more often than not.
Pacari is a sea creature who is in a precarious agreement with the sea witch to protect and save his pets and garden. I adore how he is just as sweet and dirty and he is alluring.
This talented queen whipped up a one of kind story with main characters I love and side characters I am dying to get to know better. I devoured this in one sitting, loving the banter and spice. Hot Summer’s Prey has earned a spot as one of my summer favorites and I can’t wait to see what Latrexa has in store for Anelisa and Cirro!
A fun, quick read that is difficult to put down once I started it and would've easily been finished in an afternoon if I hadn't had to pause halfway through. As a fat person, I love fat FMCs that are not only unapologetic but shown as desirable and sensuous. Teresa is fat and proud and I love that for her. Not only that, but Pacari absolutely worships every bit of her luscious curves, therefore he is perfect, no notes. This is one of those books that I wish had been a little longer, a little more fleshed out. The background was also interesting but it was treated like a footnote and I would've loved to see it breathe a little more. The romance is very high heat, my favorite, and the sex scenes are fantastic. I love unique genitalia and Pacari's did not disappoint in that regard. I can't wait for the next one!
So much fun! Picari is such a sweetheart. There is a scene where they are underwater in front of a mirror, and it is just so perfect and lovely. To find someone who loves every bit of you! It was a really sweet story between the MCs. I like the body positivity and sex-worker positivity in this one. Teresa is just so sunshine and sweet, but a lot a bit of sass. I really liked her friend group and can't wait to see more of them in future books; maybe we can learn more about the deep sea witch and what her deal is, too. It had so many moments that were so soft and sweet but also funny and silly and exciting! Definitely a fun read I'm really excited about this book and the series!
This was a pretty fun read overall. It was a fun different look on sea monsters and I really enjoyed the main characters fake the confidence till you believe it yourself.
I liked that there was a mystery involved with the smut. (We love a porn with plot) I was a little confused at first reading it cause it felt like I jumped in with both feet but after reading it a second time after going through a whole bunch of shanagins in my life I determined that my brain was in a wild spot when I read it the first time.
I’m very excited to see how the story progresses and I’m very happy to see the non binary and trans inclusion. 🥰
This is a fun monster romance. Pacari, the MMC, is able to pull magic from intimate moments with his partner. But something scour Teresa is different. Teresa is drawn to Pacari. And confident in her body and her self she goes after what she wants.
Finding out he’s not exactly human doesn’t seem to trip her up at all. And she embraces him as he is. Pacari has never been remembered or embraced as he is.
It’s so sweet watching them fall for each other. And the family of friends that Teresa has is so supportive.
I enjoyed this. It’s a fast and fun read. With some action sprinkled in.
So cute!! The story, the main characters, the slug/dog - all so adorable and cute! A adult twist on "The Little Mermaid" but with a happy ending and lots of naughty bits.
I got swept up in the story immediately and felt deeply immersed in the world, the magic and events. It felt real even though much of the story takes place under water. The foreign and alien environment felt real in my mind, maybe because I could google words I didn't understand for things and get a picture of the animals and plants.
Loved the book and am so looking forward to the next in the series!
I was so excited by this one and devoured it. A wide range of LGBTQ+ characters, a plus size FMC who loves her body, a plant daddy s*x worker. A slug! A man hating witch! Geoduck!!
The story is a sexy and fun fast burn. I was left with some mysterious questions, but I like to make up my own answer.
This was a great introduction for me to a new author.
Every thing is better, down where it's wetter- take it from Pacari
This is the first book in this Hot Monster Summer series and such a good read. As a fan of the artist and having become a firm fan of this author, I knew I had to read this. I loved this pair, the heat 🌶🌶🌶🌶 and Teresa's friends. They will hopefully have their stories within this new series. I will admit to knowing who the Witch was missing, that was sad but glad it all settled in the end. 😊 But I loved this, it was a fun and has all the emotions I enjoy. Even the angst and the evil witch. I can't wait for more! :D
I think Latrexa Nova could write the ingredients on my least favorite snack and I would love her writing. I’m a sucker for a monster romance and this one featuring a siphon was definitely for me. I love a body positive FMC and a fluid/sex positive MMC. This was such a great read! Can’t wait for the next book in the series.
I am absolutely obsessed with this book! I had the privilege of reading the ARC and I found this book to be so fun, steamy, and cute. The characters are all so diverse and have great personalities and the FMC and MMC have an adorable and very spicy relationship that works so well. I’m definitely looking forward to more!
Awesome story line and tons of spicy smut. Very fun and entertaining read! Oh my pearls!!! Teresa and Pacari are perfect! Thank you so much for letting me ARC read!!!
