Lucie Marshal is absolutely furious! How did she go from being a successful wife and mother to divorced, teetering on bankruptcy, and barely speaking to her grown-up daughter? Even worse, she’s just heard that her moronic ex-husband Miles is marrying a much younger woman in an influencer-style wedding in France #blessed #theone

Lucie will absolutely NOT be going. To hell with Miles, his new teeth, new hair and new wife! She’s perfectly fine...In fact, Lucie feels lost and angry almost all of the time. Just what happened to her younger, freer wild child self, who used to live life to the full?

But then pregnant daughter Zoe needs a lift... and eccentric nephew Deva needs a lift too and now Lucie has somehow agreed to drive her Dad’s beloved old Jag all the way across France to take them to her ex-husband’s wedding.

With a pitstop in Paris, a breakdown, unexpected passengers, and miles of open road, all set to Deva’s showtunes soundtrack – could this be the journey Lucie needs to find a way back to herself?

Carmen Reid

Carmen was born and brought up in a chilly and windy corner of Scotland in the depths of the countryside.

This may explain her lifelong phobia of cows and abiding interest in cities, department stores, books, the cinema and newspapers.

She is currently working on her eigth novel for grown-ups and her third novel for teenagers. Well, she likes to keep busy.

Carmen did once study English Literature at University College London, but, ignoring everything she’d learned, she spent most of her 20s working as a local, regional and then national newspaper reporter.

Knowing deep down that she was supposed to be an author not a journo, she left her day job to have a baby and write her first novel. (Hey, and just four sleepless, penniless years later it was published!)

Although there is a corner of her heart that will always belong to London (property developers welcome) she now lives in Glasgow, Scotland, with her husband, Thomas, and two children, Sam and Claudie, plus Jimmy the (lunatic) Jack Russell and Clive, Orangey and Gorcha, the fish.

Fortunately her hobbies are cooking, cleaning, arguing about whose turn it is to walk the dog, clean the fish tank, take out the rubbish, do the laundry... and so on.

I received a free copy of, Stuck in Second Gear, by Carmen Reid, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Lucie's life has not turned out like she expected it to. She is divorced, unhappy, not a lot of money, a pregnant daughter, and her ex husband getting married in France. Her daughter, and nephew wants her to drive them to France for the wedding. This book was a little silly, but nice.

Lucie's life has been spiraling out of control since the divorce. She went from being happy, to being broke. When she learns her ex is getting married, she is surprised. A good read.

This was a super quick and easy read. My first by this author but definitely will not be my last.
A great story about family and creating a new life after divorce and losing a loved one.
Lucie's daughter can't get to her fathers wedding in France due to a train strike, so against her better judgment. Lucie sets off to drive her daughter and her nephew to his wedding in France, and an adventure awaits them all. While on the trip, her nephew Deva, talks her into a side trip to see the birthplace of his idol, Chanel, and we get a bit of history through his character. We also meet some refugees in a side storyline which really added an element of depth to the story that I didn't even know I wanted
Overall this was a fun, feel good read and I enjoyed the ride.
Thanks to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for this eArc in exchange for my review.

✅What a truly intriguing and heartfelt story!
When I first started reading Stuck in Second Gear, I wasn’t quite sure it was going to be a book for me. Boy, did I change my mind as I read on.
The author takes us on an adventure through France while sharing second chances, letting yourself be yourself no matter what and how strong family love can be. The author also touches on serious topics while being sensitive.
Definitely take the time to read Stuck in Second Gear. You will be pleasantly surprised with everything about this uplifting story.

Thank you NetGalley, Boldwood Books and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Stuck in Second Gear is the tenth Carmen Reid book I’ve reviewed. It has a catchy title like so many of her books.

I really liked Lucie. Dava was interesting and I loved how we learned so much about Chanel through him. He was so committed to his knowledge about her. Chanel is someone I admire too. I have some of her perfumes, as well as a lipstick by her. I have a DVD about her life. Dava’s passion has inspired me to search for a book about her life and to know as much as I can about her.

Zoe was likeable but I felt sad for her and Rafi. I felt very annoyed with Rafi about his attitude towards her and lack of commitment towards and their unborn baby girl. I, like Zoe, was frustrated that he wasn’t there with her.

The road trip was so fun and realistic given the characters’ personalities.

Stuck in Second Gear is more than a road trip, it’s more like a voyage of self discovery. I really liked Lucie’s father and how positive he was in spite of being elderly and needing care. I loved how much love and respect he showed Lucie and Zoe. It was heartwarming to witness how he allowed them to use his Jaguar to drive to France instead of Lucie’s car.

I felt Pete and Fikru’s subplot was harrowing yet heartwarming.

Thanks to Boldwood Books for my eARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. I finished the book in a day. Everything about it is perfect, the characters, plot and pacing.

5 stars but it deserves more.

I have enjoyed Carmen Reid’s books for a long time. Strong female character, usually disillusioned from a failed relationship and how they turn their life around. Stuck in Second gear is written with her usual trope and fans will not be disappointed

I love a story that involves adventures, family bonding and the fmc finding their voice after losing it. That's exactly what this book offers. More chick lit then romance ( its more like a subplot). The divorced fmc was left underwater in debt and her ex is now getting remarried in France to a younger woman ( all the stereotypes apply to him trying to look younger). The fmc is lonely but a trip down memory lane reminds hee of a coworker she used to pine for.

I did skim through some as parts were monotonous or uninteresting when they skipped to the pov of other Characters ( the dsughter and nephew) but overall the book was entertaining and an enjoyable read.

Carmen Reid - Stuck In Second Gear.

This is a standalone story about middle aged divorcee, Lucie. Lucie’s life has changed beyond belief. Her long standing marriage has fallen apart, and the life of success and wealth that Lucie was used to is long gone. She now lives in a small home, her clothes are from the local supermarket rather than big name designers and financially she has been left with a pile of debt.
Life for her ex husband Miles, is looking far more rosy. With his new hair and teeth Miles is planning his wedding to his influencer fiancé in the heart of beautiful France.

Despite an invite, Lucie has no intentions of going anywhere near her ex husband’s nuptials.
That is until her heavily pregnant daughter and her vibrant, Coco Channel obsessed nephew need a lift to the wedding.

Lucie plans to drop them off and then to escape for her own little road trip while they are at the wedding.

Of course nothing goes quite to plan.
Despite it’s unexpected twists and turns, this little adventure could be just what Lucie needs to put old ghosts to bed and to kick start her life again.

I hoovered up this book in one sitting. I felt for Lucie immediately. Her situation seemed very unfair.

Lucie’s daughter Zoe, has an old head on her young shoulders. She is close to becoming a mother herself, but she needs to work out exactly where she stands with her boyfriend and if they have a future together as a family.

Lucie’s nephew Deva is on his own journey. With a little space from his over protective mother, he can begin to embrace who he really is.

I liked Lucie’s dad a lot too. He was a wise voice through all the madness.

The characters were a great mix. Their vibrance really brought the story to life.

The book flows along nicely. It’s a lot of fun, in places completely bonkers, but it also has depth and some genuine emotion tucked in there too.

I found one particular sub plot incredibly touching and it moved me to some very heartfelt tears.
I know this is fiction, but I hope that this particular part of the story will give some people a little food for thought.

The inclusion of autism and the discussion that it provoked is always welcomed by me in a book.

#StuckInSecondGear is a thoroughly enjoyable read. It’s a great balance of light hearted fun and more serious stuff that will touch your heart and mind.

Well written, fun, poignant and thoroughly recommended.

Thanks to NetGalley for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I had few expectations about this book since it's a new-to-me author, and I found the story to be entertaining and amusing, with plenty of problems and interactions to keep things interesting. It turned out to be kind of a coming-of-age story, with Lucie (as a 50-something mother/ex-wife) discovering more about herself and who she wants to be. She is an appealing character. Although resentful of her ex-husband's happiness and confused about her own future, she's constantly struggling with her feelings. But, on the plus side, she still thinks of the people around her, recognizing their needs, and trying to do something to help them. She and her daughter Zoe have been estranged, mostly because Lucie is worried about her and keeps offering unwanted (but justified) advice. Deva is a somewhat confusing character, mostly because he hasn't yet decided who he wants to be. He shares that he's autistic, and he clearly is conflicted about his sexuality, but he's a talented performer and a generally sweet guy. Even Miles, the ex-husband, is willing to talk to Lucie and tried to make amends. All in all, this was a nice story, filled with hope and caring. I will definitely look for more from this author.

Lucie was once married, ran a successful business and lived an extravagant lifestyle until her husband's debts caused them to lose everything, including their marriage. Lucie is now divorced, has a mediocre job and is in debt. She is a sad reflection of who she once was.

Stuck in Second Gear is about Lucie rediscovering herself and regaining that spring she once had in her step.

There were some storylines that were far-fetched (the Channel crossing), but overall, this proved to be a refreshing read.

NetGalley and Boldwood Books provided me with this book in exchange for an honest review.

How could I resist a book with a road trip across France.

I loved this book. I have never read Carmen Reid, but now she is on my list of authors that I have to read the backlists of! There was a lot going on in this book, what with all the events that happen as they drive across France, relationships to be repaired, with Devi taking ownership of who he really is, an influencer wedding where there is an unexpected guest and so much more. Carmen Reid does a great job of balancing the sad, the sweet, the funny moments, the joy and all the emotions in between.

For me this was so many emotions. Stress hurt humor compassion and ultimately love. Adored this book and personally was just what I needed for thinking time for a fresh start. Beautifully written and any anger or slight bitterness at times was realistic and ok. It was a full circle book.

Lucie is single, divorced, repaying debts for her ex husband, has a sick father and a difficult relationship with her daughter. Against her better judgement, she embarks on a journey across France to take her daughter to the wedding of her father, Lucie’s ex, and a crazy adventure begins. A heartwarming story, interesting characters, a touch of romance and some humour too…..loved it!

I received an advanced copy and these are my thoughts:

When I applied for this book, I thought it would be a fun, light, entertaining read, filled with adventure and mishaps. I wasn’t wrong, but this book was so much more than that.

This book was entertaining and fun, but also bittersweet and heartwarming. From the characters and their struggles and issues, to the adventure they embark on, and even some over the top plot points, this was probably my favourite book of the month.

Recently divorced Lucie, is tasked with driving her very pregnant daughter and “strange” nephew to her ex-husband’s wedding in the south of France. She reluctantly drives them and what was supposed to be a straightforward journey, turns into an adventure - filled with sightseeing; a broken down jag and the “combing through” and mending of her relationship with her daughter, Zoe; as well as the blossoming of her nephew, Deva. With Coco Chanel as their guide, Lucie will discover that now is the time to start living and to start taking (calculated) risks.

What I liked about this book: how Lucie, Zoe and Deva bonded over the trip and helped each other. There was so much character growth. I loved Lucie’s father. He was so supportive and encouraging of his daughter and his relationship with both Lucie and Zoe was heartwarming.
I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation Lucie had with her ex-husband and how she told him off for the things he’d done. It made me proud of her. I also loved that Lucie got a second chance at love.

Themes of grieving, decision making, standing up for what you want and starting over, were very present with all the characters. As well as, not taking things at face value and with preconceived notions - it’s surprising the things you learn and find when you let go of prejudice (this will make sense when you read the book).

This book will have you thinking about human relationships; what you’re holding onto that is weighing you down and that life is full of possibilities and new beginnings.

*check for trigger warnings. Very low spice, mostly implied)

Carmen Reid’s Stuck in Second Gear is a fabulously funny and feel-good read women everywhere will relate to.

Lucie Marshall’s life is in tatters. She once had it all and is now picking the broken pieces of her existence. The former wildly successful wife and mother is divorced, almost bankrupt and is barely on speaking terms with her grown-up daughter. Worse, her former husband Miles is about to get married again – to a woman who is much younger than Lucie! How did her life come to this? Forget about living life to the full, Lucie can barely survive from one day to the next!

Having been adamant that she would not be attending this wedding, Lucie finds herself having to give her pregnant daughter Zoe a lift to the nuptials. With eccentric nephew Deva also in tow, Lucie somehow ends up driving her dad’s old Jaguar across France to the wedding of the man she despises most in the world: her ex-husband.

However, could this trip be just what Lucie needed? Will she find herself on the open road? Will this adventure show her the woman she was always meant to be? Or will it just lead to heartache, embarrassment and regret?

Women everywhere will love Stuck in Second Gear. Carmen Reid writes brilliantly about women’s lives and in Lucie she has created a flawed, nuanced and believable character we can all relate to. Funny, heartfelt, sensitively written and a joy from beginning to end, Carmen Reid’s Stuck in Second Gear is an enjoyable read perfect for Milly Johnson fans.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

My Opinion

The last thing Lucie wants to do is head off to France to attend Miles’ wedding – unfortunately when her daughter needs a lift, she doesn’t have a choice. For me, this was a quick and easy book to read. Carmen Reid has once again written some interesting characters and takes the reader on an inspiring journey.

Lucie Marshal, 52, is divorced from Miles Marshal. They have a daughter, Zoe who works as a nurse in London and is pregnant. Her boyfriend is dragging his feet committing to an apartment for them to live in.

Lucie is drowning in debt that she inherited when she divorced her husband. She had a credit card in her name and her husband secretly used it to run up huge debts. In addition, his entire business died leaving her stuck with his debts and without the once really nice life she once knew.

Lucie’s father is quite ill and she doesn’t want to lose him. However, he is quite upbeat and doesn’t want her to worry.

When she gets an invitation to Miles’ and his fiancee’s wedding in France, she is appalled. Zoe has been invited too and wants to go. People are trying to get Lucie to go but she absolutely refuses. When a strike means that Lucie has to drive Zoe and her strange nephew, Deva Nadar to the wedding, she agrees as her father has said she can drive his beloved Jaguar.

Thus begins a journey that will long be remember by readers. There will be laughs, angst, and a lot of decisions made about life. This is yet another clever and charming book written by this delightful author. Come along and enjoy the journey and learn to live again.

What a fantastic book! After a tumultuous divorce from Miles and losing her business due to his poor financial choices, the last 4 years have been a struggle. Now, as she watches her father's declining health, the last thing Lucie needs (or wants) is to go to Miles' wedding in France! But when Zoe, her pregnant daughter, calls with news the trains are striking and she can't make it to her dad's wedding, Lucie's dad talks her into driving Zoe and taking a short holiday.
Soon, she adds Deva, her nephew from Miles' sister, to the passenger list. Each person is suffering from their own struggles. Lucie, broke and spending all her spare time with her father, harbors so much anger toward Miles for the demise of their marriage and her business. Zoe, 8 months pregnant and still working as an ICU nurse, is trying to figure out if her boyfriend, Rafi, is committed to her and their baby or working on making an exit. Deva, a 20 year old neurodivergent man obsessed with Coco Chanel and the theater, is studying business to appease his parents. Each have a life epiphany on a road trip to Southern France, changing the course of their lives and relationships.
Family, marriage, love, and loss- all stepping stones in life- are explored, shared, and realized in the all-encompassing story.

This is my first read by this author, and I think I will be reading others! Lucie is divorced, and is invited to her ex-husbands wedding. She is not planning on going, but then she her daughter calls because the train is on strike, and Lucie has to drive her and her nephew to the wedding. At this time, Lucie is feeling very low and angry- she is divorced, she is broke, and she is dealing with her father's looming death.
There is quite a bit going on in this story- a trip to the birthplace of Chanel, some refugees that add a wonderful and heartwarming side story, and a reconnection with a man from her past.

I found that I was very engaged in Lucie and her family. She is a bit estranged from her daughter, and I felt that the rebuilding of that relationship was written very well. The reconnection to the man from her past was also well done. There is a "spark", but the characters are also cautious about how this will go- and I liked this realistic touch! There is so much depth, and I found I was rooting for Lucie and all her family and friends the entire time!
This is a heartwarming story, with a FMC that is mature and weathered, dealing with things we all face.

Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC. This is my honest and voluntary review.

I was hooked from the first few pages and once the road trip commenced especially I was totally enthralled by this book.

We have Lucie who is adamant she isn't going to her ex-husband's wedding, but then her pregnant daughter, Zoe needs a lift at the last min, as does Deva who is a cousin and somehow she is roped into the drive.

Deva is a breath of fresh air, I loved him from his first chapter as it turns out we both love musicals. He is also a massive Coco Chanel fan, and is hoping that he can persuade Lucie into some Chanel related detours.

Zoe and Lucie haven't been on the best of terms recently, so this drive is either going to make or break their mother / daughter relationship, and at times I really wasn't sure which way it would turn out.

The threesome have some great adventures on this road trip, including meeting some people that not everyone would have agreed to help. It's a fun and entertaining story that I totally whizzed through.

It might even be one of Carmen Reid's best standalone novels, although i still favour the Personal Shopper series over everything else! Enjoyed every word, and couldn't get enough of this fabulous story.

Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

In this chaotic and fun summery novel, Carmen Reid introduces readers to Lucie Marshal, a nearly bankrupt and recently divorced woman barely on speaking terms with her daughter, as she is en route to her ex-husband Miles’ influencer wedding to a younger woman. Having not intended to attend, when her pregnant daughter Zoe and nephew Deva need a lift to France, Lucie somehow agrees to take her father’s Jag on a road trip from England to France and the wedding site. With a pitstop in Paris, a car breakdown, new passengers, a showtunes soundtrack, and other unforeseen events in her future, this might be the best (or worst) road trip of Lucie’s life. The characters in this novel are definitely personalities with unique flaws and qualities which are brought out over the course of the novel and this road trip. As Lucie’s relationships with Zoe and Deva (and even Miles) evolve, readers see each character go on a trip of self-discovery in really satisfying circumstances. The emotional core of this novel and the characters’ relationships are the stars of this novel, and readers will love Reid’s characters for their individual growth and well-written personalities in this fun and entertaining new release.

I love this story so much! It has wonderful characters, who immediately went straight to my heart. I really enjoy books that have characters of various ages, especially if they include an elderly main character. I am thrilled to say this story has a lovely older gentleman.

The majority of the story is an unexpected and unplanned trip filled with self discovery and a chance to explore relationships. It was a joy to go along on this journey.

I absolutely adore this book and wish I had better skills to convey why! It just touched me so deeply. I know I will be reading this book again, which is a huge compliment, since I rarely re-read books. I look forward to future books by this author, Carmen Reid who has become a favorite of mine.

A sincere thank you Boldwood Books and NetGalley for giving me the immense pleasure of reading the advance reader copy, with no obligation to write a review. My review is written freely as a hobby, and is totally my own opinion, not influenced by receiving the ARC.

I love Lucie! She is a riot. She went from living life a comfortable privileged life to having it all fall apart when her husband left and found his new “happy”. He is an idiot who left her broke and with a daughter who is barely speaking to her. To add insult to injury he is now marrying a is now marrying a much younger woman and acting like an overgrown toddler himself. Her very angry and very pregnant daughter and nephew need a ride to the wedding that she wants nothing to do with. What is a mother to do? Off they go on a crazy road trip to Lucie rediscovering who she is, what she wants and to taking charge of her life again. A fun, light laugh out loud listen. Not the book to read int he middle of the night when you’re fighting insomnia and trying to sleep! Enjoyable and I like how this author shows women growing, moving forward and finding their power.

I wasn't sure about this book when I started it, but it ended up being so much more than I was expecting. Very funny, yet sad in places too, but a really great read.

Lucie is divorced and her husband is remarrying in France, and somehow she ends up being persuaded to drive her pregnant daughter Zoe and nephew Deva (through marriage on her ex-husband's side of the family) to France for the wedding!

Deva is a fanatical fan of Chanel and ends up persuading Lucie to stop at various Chanel places during the journey, which are quite mad and very funny! We learn more about Zoe's partner, who seems to having difficulties with the whole partner/father issue, which I must admit I found annoying. Lucie is having issues of her own trying to find her own way in the world again after her divorce, along with the fact that her father is terminally ill.

But in the end the unexpected trip works out well and they all come out of the experience a lot happier. Very enjoyable read.

Lucie is in a bad place - divorced, stuck in a boring job and paying off a credit card debt that her ex-husband Miles left in her name for his hair plugs.

To make matters worse, her father is terminally ill and dirsnt have much time left, she has fallen out with her pregnant daughter Zoe after she expressed concerns about her relationship with boyfriend Rafi and she has just received am invite to Miles' wedding in France...

Lucie decides she is not going tonthrnwedding as Miles.jusy wants to show off his younger influencer wife . However, when the trains are cancelled and Zoe struggles to find a flight Lucie agrees to drive her, along with her neurodivergent cousin Devi.

The premis of this story sounds depressing but it is actually light-hearted and feel-good. A fun light read. I really enjoyed Carmen's writing style and hope we get to hear more from the characters in future books!

Lucy was divorced from Miles and they had a daughter named Zoe. Miles left Lucy in a bind owing quite a bit of money after divorce and now he is getting married. Miles and his new bride Jacasta to be is having a destination wedding at a very expensive venue. Zoe wants to go to her Dad’s wedding but she is very pregnant so her mom says she will drive her there. Then Lucile’s nephew Deva wants to ride with them because he is obsessed with Coco Channel and he wants to visit places of interest to her. Lucid was going to rent a room and just enjoy herself and not attend her ex-husband’s new marriage but she ended up going. One of the funniest things is when Lucie does something to the wedding cake. I laughed so hard I was literally crying.

This uplifting story follows Lucie as she embarks on a road trip to France with her daughter and nephew, Deva, after a train strike disrupts their travel plans. Initially reluctant, Lucie finds the journey transformative as unexpected adventures unfold.

Deva’s fascination with Coco Chanel leads them on a detour to visit the iconic designer’s birthplace, bringing an engaging historical element to the story. Along the way, they also encounter refugees, adding a thoughtful and heartfelt layer to the narrative.

Balancing humor, family bonds, and poignant moments, this is a feel-good tale of rediscovery and creating new beginnings after life’s challenges.

When I first read the synopsis, I was in two minds about the book. A woman goes to her ex-husbands WEDDING??!! There is no way I would do that! However, I like to give things a go, so I got stuck in and read the book.

I loved it! Lucie is a woman who is struggling to adapt, post-divorce. Her ex has left her with a big debt that wasn't hers and her daughter Zoe is pregnant with no sign of a wedding ahead. Somehow or another, she is roped into taking her dad's Jag for a road trip to France, with her daughter and her nephew, Deva, in the car.

Gotta admit that Deva was my favourite character in this book. He really comes into his own as the book goes on and I absolutely loved that :)

A gorgeous, modern tale that is well worth reading.

5 stars from me.

ARC Review

Stuck in Second Gear by Carmen Reid

Lucie is furious to discover ex-husband Miles has not only left her in debt but is also about to marry a much younger woman. He also has the nerve to send her an invitation to their influencer style wedding in France. Lucie will not be attending. That is until her pregnant daughter needs a lift to get there, and her nephew needs help to get there too. So Lucie reluctantly agrees to drive them but she will NOT be attending the wedding.

This was an easy and fun read, but a little silly at times and a bit predictable. There were some touching and humourous moments and I feel this would have worked better as a mother and daughter story without all the unnecessary tangents.
