The author of How to Survive at the End of the World continues this fast-paced isekai series about a dead man who somehow ends up in charge of a dead world . . .

When Matt Perison first came to Gaia, everything was wrong and dangerous. He was promised redemption and repayment for dying of cancer, but that turned out to be a lie. He was promised a nice place in which to exist, but instead he got death. He was promised, in all ways, good. But what he has, in all ways, is bad.

He’s made the best of it though. Aided by his system guardian, Lucy, and the dungeon system itself, Barry, Matt began to build a life for himself. He’s getting pretty good at surviving in a place where nothing else is alive. But surviving isn’t all there is. So Matt’s finding the time to make improvements to his new home. And he’s beginning to have hope that tomorrow will be a better day.

There’s only one snag. The system instance on Gaia is out for revenge, and a nightmare from Gaia’s distant past is returning to wreak havoc once again. Now, Matt has to learn that life is about learning how to thrive—and finding a way to do so when even survival is in doubt . . .

The second volume of the hit LitRPG fantasy series—with over two million views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

not as good as book 1

In book one there was a very intresting story happening with new and exciting takes on the big standard Iskeal story.

Book 2 was unfortunately a full reversion to the norm.

The only part of this story was that the system was the antagonist, however that malevolence from the system was never used in any new or exciting ways, only literally doing things it had done in the previous book.

Deadworld Isekai 2 by R.C. Joshua
Introduction

"Deadworld Isekai 2" is the highly anticipated sequel in R.C. Joshua's innovative Sci-Fi LitRPG Adventure series. This novel continues to push the boundaries of the isekai genre, blending elements of science fiction, post-apocalyptic survival, and game-like progression systems. As a follow-up to the well-received first installment, "Deadworld Isekai 2" promises to delve deeper into the barren world of Gaia, challenging both its protagonist and readers with a unique take on the "transported to another world" trope.

Series Premise and Context

The "Deadworld Isekai" series subverts traditional isekai expectations by transporting its protagonist, Matt, not to a vibrant, magical realm, but to Gaia—a once-paradise planet now reduced to a lifeless wasteland. This premise sets the stage for a survival story that explores themes of resilience, adaptation, and the nature of heroism in a world beyond saving.

In the first book, readers were introduced to Matt's struggle to survive in this hostile environment, armed with a seemingly useless system of stats, skills, and levels—standard fare for LitRPG heroes, but tragically inadequate in a dead world. The series has been praised for its innovative approach, turning genre tropes on their head and presenting a hero who arrives too late to be the savior, forcing him to navigate challenges with wit and resourcefulness.

Author's Style and Approach

R.C. Joshua, known for his engaging storytelling and fast-paced narratives, brings his unique blend of humor and adventure to "Deadworld Isekai 2." As a thirty-something author from the southwest, Joshua's writing is characterized by complex world-building, character development, and a knack for immersing readers in fantastical settings. His style, which has garnered praise across his various series, including "How to Survive at the End of the World" and "Demon World Boba Shop," is likely to shine in this sequel, offering a balance of tension, humor, and thoughtful exploration of the human condition in extreme circumstances.

Anticipated Plot and Character Development

Character development is expected to be a key focus, with Matt likely evolving in response to the harsh realities of Gaia. The sequel may explore deeper psychological aspects of surviving in isolation, the impact of hope (or lack thereof) in a dead world, and the potential for growth even in the most desolate circumstances.

LitRPG Elements and Gameplay Mechanics

As a LitRPG adventure, "Deadworld Isekai 2" is expected to continue incorporating game-like elements into its narrative structure. This may include:

Further exploration of the "incompetent system" introduced in the first book, possibly with new skills or abilities that Matt must creatively apply to survive. Progression mechanics that reflect the unique challenges of a dead world, where traditional leveling up might be subverted or reimagined. Strategic problem-solving that aligns with the series' rational fiction approach, emphasizing intelligent solutions and realistic consequences. Themes and Philosophical Exploration

"Deadworld Isekai 2" is poised to delve deeper into several compelling themes:

Survival vs. Purpose: Exploring the tension between mere survival and finding meaning in a world devoid of life. Adaptation and Resilience: Examining how humans can adapt to even the most extreme environments. The Nature of Heroism: Challenging traditional notions of what it means to be a hero when there's no world left to save. Isolation and Mental Fortitude: Delving into the psychological impacts of extreme isolation and the struggle to maintain hope. Man vs. Environment: Continuing to explore the central conflict of surviving in a hostile, unforgiving world. Writing Style and Narrative Techniques

Based on R.C. Joshua's established style, readers can expect:

A fast-paced narrative that balances action with introspection Vivid descriptions of the desolate landscape of Gaia, bringing the dead world to life paradoxically Clever dialogue and internal monologue that showcase Matt's wit and resilience Seamless integration of LitRPG elements with the narrative, avoiding clunky exposition Potential use of flashbacks or alternative narrative structures to break up the isolation of the setting Potential Audience and Reception

"Deadworld Isekai 2" is likely to appeal to a diverse audience, including:

Fans of the isekai genre looking for a fresh, subversive take on familiar tropes LitRPG enthusiasts interested in unique applications of game mechanics in storytelling Science fiction readers drawn to post-apocalyptic settings and survival narratives Readers who appreciate character-driven stories with philosophical underpinnings

Given the positive reception of the first book and R.C. Joshua's growing reputation in the genre, "Deadworld Isekai 2" is poised for success. The series' unique premise and Joshua's engaging writing style have already garnered a significant following, with the first book achieving high ratings and nearly two million views on platforms like Royal Road.

Conclusion

"Deadworld Isekai 2" by R.C. Joshua promises to be a compelling continuation of a series that has already distinguished itself in the crowded isekai and LitRPG genres. By subverting expectations and placing its hero in a truly hopeless world, the novel invites readers to grapple with profound questions about survival, purpose, and the human spirit's resilience in the face of overwhelming odds.

R.C. Joshua's "Deadworld Isekai 2" stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of isekai literature, offering a gritty, thought-provoking narrative that challenges readers to look beyond traditional heroic fantasies. In a genre often criticized for repetition, this series breathes new life into familiar tropes, promising a reading experience that is as intellectually stimulating as it is entertaining.

"Deadworld Isekai 2" is shaping up to be a must-read for fans of innovative science fiction and anyone interested in exploring the limits of human adaptability in the most extreme circumstances. R.C. Joshua's unique vision and storytelling prowess are set to deliver a sequel that not only meets but potentially exceeds the high bar set by its predecessor.

It's good

I'm writing this review to help the author. I enjoyed the work, but I don't want to ruin the plot for anyone. I apologize for any spell and errors. I'm writing this review with voice to text. If you like the first book you're going to like this. You know I haven't read the first book. You can probably get away with reading this book, but you'll catch a lot more stuff if you read the first book. Good action. Good accomplishments. Nice flashbacks to the other world. Lots of fun. Main characters intelligent but also isn't just one-dimensional hero. He tries really hard but he's not perfect and admits it. I'm sorry I'm not better at doing those reviews, but if it helps, I stayed up to 2:00 in the morning to finish this book because it was too good to stop eating

Strangely enough, by the time this book ended, I have to say I liked it even more than the first book. Survivalism has never been so on the edge, so near the oh-shit-this-is-insane, stakes.

It helps that our MC isn't truly overpowered, or even close to being properly equipped in stuff or stats. The whole VS the System is just so CHEATY, it's easy to root for our guy. An I do.

Now, perhaps we can start growing some shit on this dead world for real. Maybe.

Personal note:
If anyone reading my reviews is be interested in reading my SF (Very hard SF, mind you), I'm open to requests.

Just direct message me in goodreads or email me on my site. I'd love to get some eyes on my novels.

fun

Mat continues to live on his desert planet. He built a house and has land. He grows his property and faces down the System. The system sends interlopers and the interlopers go too far. They bring back the Scourge. Mat races time to grow strong enough to take it out and wins. In the process he removes the System from the planet and restores the natives to it.

A fun continuation of the series. Great pacing. Good humor. Great storytelling. Please enjoy

4.5 stars. Picked up a lot from book 1, held my attention well. There was a bit of a hanging chad with the demon world crew, but I assume that'll be picked up in book 3 so I won't punish this book for it.

MC is non-standard for a "hero", but has an abundance of grit even if he makes some terrible tactical (and in one case, strategic) decisions. If you were on the fence after book 1, the momentum definitely ramps up here.

I loved the first book, and there is a slight dip in this one, but it still gave me everything I want from this series: Matt and Lucy, rebuilding Gaia, general peril, battles, forward movement in the overall plot arc, and all around good writing!

Matt and Lucy is the most important part, I love their friendship.

Not sure that the pace of new information is keeping up with the torment you are putting the main character through. I like when mistakes are made by the evil characters and hints of the world are revealed. So far there is just a lot of misery and no hope.

Great book

It's a great series, and i can't wait for the next book. The story arc was good, and I spent far too late staying up last night trying to finish the thing before giving up and doing it this morning. :)

most unique system litrpg I have read

I have read a lot of litrpg - one where the bad guys are not bad, where the hero retires, etc etc. this is in many ways the most unusual of the lit rpgs I have read.

pretty good, love the concept, but it got a bit stale.

The action gets a little repetitive, and the sun boss of the novel drags on waaaaaaay too long, but overall I thought it was almost as good as the first book, which was really good.

the most human LITRPG there is

There used to be a dude named Spider Robinson, who fused classic fantasy and sci-fi stuff with very emotionally true human stories. RC is that guy in our genre. Not just feel good but feel right.

Depressing

I just couldn't do it. What a depressing book. Sure the author thought they could make.it fun, but for me, it was just a bunch of dues ex/plot devices to cause mental anguish. It stopped being fun when there was no real agency for the MC.
