I love a good Katherine Center book to break up the heavier material and, as always, she delivered a very readable and enjoyable story.
I have come to love Katherine’s books. She never fails to create an engaging, yet easy read. But what I love her most for is: first, her characters; second, the inspirational messages she sneaks into her books.
4.5 🌟🌟🌟🌟💫
Sam was definitely my favourite character (although, I also loved Alice and Babette). Was it because I would love to be a librarian, and she had my dream job? Maybe, but I loved her nonetheless. She was a joyful character, who did so much good for others and had so much love to give. However, she hadn’t had an easy upbringing. Her father left when she was small and her mother died when she was only 10, leaving her to fend for herself. Sam never had somewhere, someone, she belonged to. While she watched others ‘utterly ignore people, not be there for them, let them down, and forget about them - but then, when you finally showed up, they were happy.’ - this was something she had always wanted but never had. Furthermore, Sam had also dealt with a lifetime of epilepsy. She kept it a secret, as she thought it left her unlovable, preventing her from forming romantic relationships. At the age of 30, she had loved one man. One man, named Duncan, he worked at her previous school yet failed to recognise she existed. Upon discovering he was in a relationship with another woman, she moved to Texas. And found her way into Max and Babette's lives, who helped her change her perspective on the world. This was the formation of JOYFUL SAM 🌺 we love joyful Sam.
She brought colour, joy, happiness and love to her life and others. Gone was the old grey clothed, mousy Sam and in came the polka dots and flower hats. But most of all her character radiated love to everyone. Joy was a choice and it was one she made on a daily basis…
“You can decide to do something joyful.”…”You can hug somebody. Or crank up the radio. Or watch a funny movie. Or tickle somebody. Or wear a flower hat to work.” 🤗 🎶 🎥 🤣 👒
“The point is to be happy. As often as you can.” 💓
This book had some REALLY good and helpful ideas. I was not expecting to find such a deep and meaningful story when I picked up this book but OH wow, did it deliver. I actually feel like I am coming away from it with real life tips and advice on how to manage the days filled with trauma and darkness. Thank you Katherine for that unexpected advice 😙
Duncan was also on the other end of Sam’s inspiration and encouragement. Duncan Carpenter is the new school principal who lives by rules and regulations, because he KNOWS firsthand guided that bad things can happen. But he wasn't always that way. In fact, he was her only love, back at her previous school, in a different life. However, the fun, mood-enhancing Duncan she'd known ‘is now a suit-and-tie wearing, rule-enforcing tough guy so hell-bent on protecting the school that he's willing to destroy it.’ The school is in danger of losing everything that made it a special place of work, learning and fun. The community is in chaos and it’s up to Sam to set things right.
Commence The Duncan Project - after finding out about his traumatic past, she (along with Alice and Babette) were determined to help him in any way they could and it started with an epic brain storming session. They were determined to help him remember his old self, to remind him of what it is like to be happy and help him to soften his tough outer shell and open his heart to people again. And furthermore, they had hope that bringing back the old Duncan would have a knock on effect on the school and restore it to its previous charm. This idea 💡 tuned into quite a run of events that would test them all to their limits. But simultaneously, it would bring them closer together.
The storyline had lots of humour, some snippets of inspiration and a few undertones of seriousness to it. It was so readable and entertaining that I didn’t want to put it down. I find Katherine’s writing so smooth and engaging that I end up flying through the pages without even realising it. Overall, this truly is beautiful journey of love, grief, friendship, suffering, losing and finding yourself.
There was so much wisdom in this book and I had so many favourite quotes written out because I just fell in love with the way Katherine explained things, so here are some favs:
“Courage makes everything easier next time. And I’m not going to let you live your life in fear.”
“Joy is the antidote to fear. To anger. To boredom. To sorrow.”
“I’m not happy because it comes easily to me. I bite and scratch and claw my way toward happiness every day.”
“A choice to value the good things that matter. A choice to rise above everything that could pull you down. A choice to look misery right in the eyes…and then give it the finger.”
“It’s a deliberate kind of joy. It’s a conscious kind of joy. It’s joy on purpose.”
