History is rarely viewed or recorded by women, even royalty, which makes the books by Anne Bailey so fascinating to me. Sometimes, if one isn't British, it can be a bit overwhelming to keep all of the names and dates straight especially when the names are frequently the same. That isn't the case in this story which is fast-paced and focused on Eleanor of Castille, wife of Edward I, better known as Longshanks of Braveheart fame. Unlike most royal marriages, these two people passionately loved and supported each other. This novel focuses only on their early years, the tumultuous period before Edward became king. Eleanor's "battles" were both personal and political but her intellect and diplomatic skills make this a fascinating tale. As women, our history may not be recorded but we WERE there and used our influence whenever possible. I highly recommend this book, so smoothly written that you'll feel right at home in the Middle Ages.

Full disclosure: Edward I and Eleanor of Castille are my 22nd Great-Grandparents according to my mother's lineage. And nope, I'm not English and I don't own a single castle.
