The Smithsonian Book of Flight by Walter J. Boyne with contributions by the likes of Scott Crossfield, Richard Whitcomb, & Paul MacCready is surprisingly good. As a Smithsonian “big book,” I had expected a powder puff treatment of the history of aviation. Instead, I’m impressed with its detail, particularly the coverage of business aspects and the economics of aircraft development & production. And Boyne isn't shy about sharing his opinions. That's a plus in my book. Still, there are a few quirks. First, although the volume is splendidly illustrated, the images do not particularly correspond to the surrounding text. It’s like they are two separate threads, both good, but not closely connected. Second, Boyne jumps around a lot. One moment he is talking about bomber development in 1952 and the next sentence tackles something from the 1970s. That’s just one example, and it’s likely the result of having to cover the entire history of aeronautics in a mere 279 pages. I came across this book at a library surplus sale, picking it up for $2.00. It was money well spent.

So much information and excellent pictures!!! Even though it's from 1987, it's still very relevant and interesting!

A fine book for aviation enthusiasts. There is a lot of history in here and this is a large volume. Great for home or public or school libraries.
