But as they reach their destination, they must face the harsh reality of their separate lives: Charlie needs to find her mother, and Graham needs to rebuild his life. Pulled in different directions, can they find each other in the right place and at the right time, twice? ------ SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY is a must-read for anyone who believes in the magic of unexpected encounters and the healing power of love.
This is a book of love stories between parents, siblings and of course a boy and a girl. Charlie and Graham find each other in, let's just say a pretty unconventional way, at the exact time they need each other most. Both are on a journey of grief, healing and growth as they set out to find Charlie's Mom. All Charlie has is her mother's letters to her father and fate to guide her as she searches for the mother she has never known. These letters are the very best parts. They are raw, off the cuff, truthful and crushing. Somewhere Along The Way explores the life cycle of love and heartache. A sweet story of hard goodbyes and exciting hellos.
Some books are meant to be savored. Read slowly. Paying attention to details and feelings. This is one of those books.
I’ve always loved Anna Gomez’s stories but this is her best yet. It’s a story of sorrow, grief, finding yourself and building YOUR life. Whether it’s from a penthouse or a brownstone, believe in fate and the signs will lead you where you are supposed to be.
Take this journey with Graham, Charlotte and the people that love them on a cross country journey that’s much more than a road trip.
“Don’t hide from life because every single moment is a part of the journey that has been planned for you.”
SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY is a must-read for anyone who believes in the magic of unexpected encounters and the healing power of love.
First of all, I would like to thank NetGalley for giving me this free ARC. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to read another nice book. I would like to thank the publisher of this book, which is Kobo Originals, and I would like to thank the author for writing this beautiful book, which is Anna Gomez.
Charlotte “Charlie” Hastings never missed her mother. But when Charlie's late father visits her in a dream and reveals the letters her mother had written to him over the years, she begins yearning for a connection she never desired to make. Reeling from a mix of emotions, Charlie embarks on a soul-searching cross-country journey to California to find the mother she thought she never needed.
The main character here is Charlie. One night, her late father visits her through a dream that her mother left a letter. At first, I was confused by the characters and the writing of the book. But as I went to read it more and more, it was kind of good. It was a slow-paced book, and I think the theme is more about adventure and finding family.
I will never not be impressed by the writings of Anna. Her words are always so beautifully written that I can see it all so clearly in my mind.
Somewhere Along the Way was such a beautiful story. I lost my father to cancer almost a year ago and I found myself so connected to Charlie and her grief. I was a daddy’s girl so losing him is/has been extremely painful. In someways this book was cathartic for me.
Charlie and Grahams story was incredible to read. I loved reading their relationship blossom and how when you know you’ve found the one you just know. The little twists at the end made me love the book even more.
Using old love letters as cookie crumbs, Charlie embarks on a cross county trip to find both herself and her mother, with the added bonus of a love she didn’t know she needed. This poignantly written novel about self discovery, heartache, and love proves to be just what everyone needs to read this fall.
These characters are written so well and real that it is very easy to identify with at least one of them. As someone who currently has the words amor fati tattooed onto her skin, the fate references and the underlying theme that you make the best of what you’ve been given made my heart happy. And last but not least, the Charlotte’s Webb theme throughout the book made me find my old copy and give it a reread.
As always with anything I read from Anna Gomez/Christine Brae, I savor all the words and cry when it’s over. (to say I’m a fan is an understatement) 💜
This was a story I didn't know I really needed. It really just hit the spot and gave me such a feel good feeling despite a large portion of the story dealing with overcoming grief.
Charlie and Graham are both incredibly lost after the deaths of her father and his sister. A chance encounter throws them together and in no time, two strangers are embarking on a cross country journey to not only heal, but to find themselves.
Charlie's parents' story and Graham's past are weaved in the present timeline to add another layer to an already really great story. I loved every bit of that. Although I've read cross-country romance stories before, Somewhere Along the Way is still unique in its own way with exceptional characters and deeper elements of mental illness and the lifelong treatment it often requires.
This is my first Anna Gomez book, but it won't be my last. However, I knew I would not be disappointed as I have read some of her books under Christine Brae and knew she would write a great story.
I also adored all the Charlotte's Web references as it was my favorite book as a child! It added a ton of nostalgia!
I loved the love (you get to see both the love of Charlie’s Father and Mother in the past and the blossoming love of Charlie) in this book past and present and how they intersect together throughout this story. A woman struggling to find herself when she feels all is lost begins to see that she just had to see who she truly was by looking into her past and seeing what she hadn’t seen before meets a man (Graham) dealing with his own crippling grief and guilt embark on a life changing journey across the country. It’s a beautiful story, as all of Anna’s are and it pulled me in immediately! I cannot tell you how much I loved reading this or the tears I shed as I turned the pages.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book. I really wanted to enjoy this, but decided to DNF at 28% for a few reasons.
First, the majority of the dialogue falls flat, and there's so much telling instead of showing. The narration is also kind of jarring; it jumps around and overall just feels like something is missing. There are also inconsistencies in scenes, for example, a character is wearing a face mask, but a few paragraphs later Charlie can see him pursing his lips (and no mention of him removing said mask in the intervening paragraphs).
As for the main character, I found Charlie difficult to relate to and she often acts very juvenile. So it just feels like I'm in the head of a teenager, rather than a successful woman in her thirties.
Lastly, even for someone (me) who can suspend A LOT of disbelief for the sake of all kinds of cheesy romance trope shenanigans, the whole idea of her letting a stranger go on a road trip with her because of his crazy green eyes just beggars belief.
It's a book about two people - both of them are in the 'lowest' of their life and both of them try to find themselves in this world.
Charlie just recently lost her father and then foud out, that her mother is still alive. Graham, who also lost someone dear to him, blames himself for the death and decides, he doesn't want to live a life like he did until know.
two different souls, two different stories. One journey together to find their family and their purpose in life. Finding love in an unexcepted place, at unexpected time. Are they ready to open their hearts for emotions, which none of them want right now? Or are they meant to get them broken?
It was such a beautiful story about grief and the way we deal with it. It was not a book that you should read fast, you need to give yourself time to really understand and enjoy it. I, honestly, enjoyed it. I would recommend it to everyone! The only reason it wasn't a five star read was because although i felt deep the emotions in it i couldn't get myself to fall in love with the main characters. I don't know why. But it is not a bad thing! Even when you don't feel the characters, you can still enjoy the story!
Thank you Grey's Promotion and the author for the opportunity to read this book! All opinions are my own.
Once again, Anna Gomez/Christine Brae gives us a story that resonates deep down into your soul. A story filled with poignant life lessons. Lessons that are predetermined but also ones of unexpectedness. A story about how life delivers the good, the bad, and the ugly. And how it's up to us to determine how we react in response to them.
Somewhere Along the Way is not only a road trip between two strangers who grow to become a lifeline for one another but also this rollercoaster we call life. It's a road trip that depicts the repercussions of grief, while also illustrating pure unadulterated love, kindness, compassion, self discovery, and healing. It's a road trip filled with mental illness, death, trepidation, devotion, bereavement, yearning, calamity, maturation, and passion. And in my humble opinion, it's a road trip well worth taking.
Charlie and Graham. Celia and Edgar. Two soulmates. Two couples. Intertwined by fate, family, loss, and friendship.
While I absolutely adored all of the characters between these pages, Celia is who I connected to the most. I really loved seeing her through the letters she'd written to Edgar, and essentially to Charlie. Witnessing the destruction her mental illness caused and what it cost her brought me so much pain and heartache. I cried right along with this sweet mama who lost it all, due to no real fault of her own. There's nothing like being a prisoner to your own mind. As someone who suffers from BiPolar Disorder (though not to the extreme of Celia's), I got her. Her struggles echoed parts of my own. I wanted so bad to hug her. To tell her she wasn't alone. That she'll find that light at the end of the tunnel. To hang in there. As a mama, I couldn't even begin to imagine the emptiness she felt not having a relationship with her daughter. But I completely understood why the decision was made the way it was. And she had my deepest sympathy.
Due to this, it was pretty damn awesome to see Celia navigate and recognize her mental illness, to find her spot in the world, and then to finally get a win, a happily ever after.
I also absolutely loved observing Charlie learn about her mama, watching her cycle through those myriad of emotions. And in the end, seeing her show so much grace and mercy for a woman she'd never met, but only knew through her father's memories, and now her mother's own words (letters).
I can't forget Graham. He was the best copilot a girl could ask for. It's no wonder Charlie fell head over heels for this mysterious, handsome man, who was no stranger to tragedy. Even fighting his own demons, he made sure Charlie was always safe, understood, and supported.
Gomez did an amazing job showing how forgiveness played a huge role in this book. Not only of others, but of themselves. To feel that forgiveness, which bleed off the pages, and then watch them move forward healed the broken parts of my heart.
I think this quote is the epitome of this journey: "Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future. Author: Paul Boose"
Then there was that last 10% or so. A perfect touch to an already moving story.
I definitely wasn't ready for it to end. I wanted to spend so much more time with Charlie, Graham, and Celia.
This is a journey I would recommend reading. While it isn't filled to the brim with smut, it's a touching and emotional one. One of my favorite things about Anna Gomez's/Christine Brae's books is the real, relatable people within them. I love the fuck out of the fact they are flawed, facing authentic issues, not contrived drama for the sake of the story. Her characters and worlds are always perfectly imperfect. And Somewhere Along the Way was no exception.
Hmmmm... 🤔 After reading the last page, I am still in deep thought and still whirling with emotions. I have read a few of Anna Gomez's books, even the ones under her penname Christine Brae, and every book delivered thought provoking stories of love, loss, and self-discovery. Somewhere Along the Way is no different. Anna Gomez has again delivered an emotional and moving story of loss, grief, family, and love.
Somewhere Along the Way took me on Charlie's journey of grieving and learning more about who she is after the loss of her father and learning the secret her father kept of her mother. As I continued reading, the emotional turmoil that Charlie endured was felt deep inside, so much so that I teared up and needed a box of tissue. 😢 Of course, Anna Gomez can't just have one character with complicated and emotional situations. Hence, she introduced Graham, who happens to cross paths with Charlie. He, too, has his own secrets and inner-demons he kept. As these two characters continue on their travels, they learn of each other, and begin to understand each other, even fall in love, during their time together.
Sometimes, you have to get away from everything and everyone when you're grieving. But, for Charlie, she wasn't just grieving, she had to rediscover herself after the life changing event(s) in her life. Along the way, love is found unexpectedly and not necessarily wanted during that moment in her life. Anna Gomez has written a beautifully and emotionally charged story that compelled these characters to face these obstacles in their lives.
Moreover, Somewhere Along the Way is a beautifully written story that deals with emotionally and mentally deep issues that many can relate to, in one way or another. But, I can guarantee that by the end of the book, tears will be falling. I, myself, took a while to finally stop the tears.

4.75⭐️ This story set out to be an emotional and healing journey and it did just that!! I loved this more and more as I read it. I’ll start by saying this is a “dead parent” grieving story!!! 100%! So if that’s not something you can handle right now, I would tread carefully. As someone who just lost their parent at the beginning of this year, I was shocked and went thru those emotions all over again, I had to pause but I really wanted to continue to see how her journey played out, my heart was really in this one!
At about 75% in I was still weary about G, like ok cool who the heck just lets some guy hop in the car with them and go but we get his POV at some point and man o man the tears were just flowing some more.
Just know EVERYONE is grieving something and this was such a beautifully written story focusing on not just your own grief but others around you as well.
There is also a rollercoaster of mental health rep, bipolar 2 I believe. And I really gained a better understanding of those who may live it as well as loved ones who are in their lives. It’s a tough illness and not something that can be cured but managed. And that spoke volumes! The idea of “because of my mental illness, I am not worthy to be loved”. Oooff😫
⚠️: death of parent, (abandonment) of parent, bipolar 2 - the verbal and physical lashing out, cancer, drug OD
I had high hopes for this one based of the synopsis. I also loved the cover! I am rating this one 2 stars even though I decided to DNF at 44%. At 44% in I still felt like the book hadn’t captivated me. The first several chapters were so heavy that at 25% in I just found myself being depressed and not excited to read this one. Charlie doesn’t even meet Graham until after a quarter of the way into the book and even then their relationship was such a slow burn that I just couldn’t get into it. I also found that the writing was a bit choppy. Charlie would be talking about one subject and then a totally different storyline would start out of no where. This left me confused at times and bummed by the lack of transitions and storytelling. I am giving this two stars because I did really like the aspect of the letters from Charlie’s mom being within the text and seeing how each of those letters shaped the journey. I also really liked what I read so far of Grahams character. I would have loved more of him and their road trip earlier on. I think there is an audience for this book it just wasn’t me.
My Thoughts: Another wonderful book from Anna Gomez! Somewhere Along the Way is more than a beautiful love story. It is a journey of finding yourself through grief, finding where you belong within your family, and healing after loss so that you can find your own happiness. From the very first chapter I was captivated by the characters and wanted to know more about their stories. This book is hard to put down!
Storyline: Through events that I would call nothing short of serendipity, Charlie and Graham embark on a cross country road trip in search of answers and their own individual healing after the loss of a loved one. Left with a stack of letters from her mom, Charlie begins to put the pieces of her past together and they begin to tell a story of their own. A story of love that only Charlotte and Wilbur would understand. (Yes, the story Charlotte’s Web has significant meaning to Charlie) Hope and unconditional love give Charlie the strength to keep searching for a mother she never knew.
Along the way, Charlie and Graham realize they may have more in common than they thought and quite possibly could be exactly what each other needs. However, once they reach California Charlie must find her mom and Graham must rebuild his life. They must go their separate ways. Will a serendipitous moment bring them back together to continue their story or will the rain begin to fall again?
What I liked about this book: There are so many amazing things to say about this book! The descriptive writing of caring for a loved one with a terminal illness, the beautiful way that Anna writes about mental illness, and the many ways that this book touched me personally make it one of my top 5 books of 2024.
Thank you NetGalley, Kobo Originals and Anna Gomez for providing an ARC in exchange for honest thoughts.
ARC Book Review Somewhere Along The Way A Novel Written By Anna Gomez Fiction - Romance Published September 2024 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book has earned each of the five stars I gave it. I loved the story and the characters. It is a story about two broken people who are handling grief and trying to find their way.
After the death of her father, Charlotte Hastings embarks on a road trip to find the mother she never knew. Mystery man, Graham Mead, is her unlikely travel companion. They get to know each other as they travel together from New York to California. Charlie gets to know her mother and the reason she left their family through letters given to her after her father’s death.
This is Celia and Edgar’s love story, as well as Charlie and Graham’s love story. Readers will experience many of the same emotions as the main characters while reading.
“Don’t hide from life because every single moment is a part of the journey that has been planned for you.”
Poignant story of healing, self discovery and new beginnings, I was totally captivated by this read! My first read by this author and I’m a fan!
Such a unique story with original and well developed characters! A chance encounter between Charlotte and Graham leads to a cross country trip that leads to an unexpected and surprising journey with unforgettable consequences! Gripping and compelling, I felt I was riding along with these characters as they embarked on this journey. These characters were so complex and multi layered their story so touching and emotional! I will only say this read took my heart out it through the wringer and then gave me some swoony surprises! 4.5 stars!
Reading is such a personal journey. We all take bits from the things we devour, and we learn from them, feel the feelings, and maybe even apply a lesson learned to our own walk in life. Sometimes a story presents itself just when you need it the most. Who knew this would be one of those books, at just the right moment, to pull me out of my reading funk and remind me to take time to heal!
When it comes to an Anna Gomez book, I KNOW I am going to feel. I KNOW there will always be an underlying lesson, and as this story unfolded its many layers, it did not disappoint. Thank you for the gift of this beautiful read!!!!
I have been a fan of Anna's writing since I was I introduced to her writing as Christine Brae, with the book The Light In The Wound. The way she captures your attention with her words is like no other. Charlie and Grahams story isn't your typical love story. It's a journey of growing to know each other. It's brought about in the most unconventional way. But you need to keep reading to see where the journey will take you next. And to know that you don't just get their journey makes it even better. Anna's writing is beautiful. I'm a fan for life. Grab a cup of green tea, snuggle up, and enjoy the ride. You might want to grab a few tissues as well.
Somewhere along the way Somewhere along the way takes you on an amazing and unexpected journey through grief. There’s lots of lessons to be learned and this raw and emotional book had me sobbing throughout the pages. You can really connect with the author through this one, especially if you’ve been through something similar. I love the honesty in this read. She shares the good, bad, and the ugly parts of such a trying time. After reading it about a week ago, it is still sticking with me and I think about it often. It’s amazing how much you can realize after a person is gone from your life! Pick this one up. It’s a different read that I think we all need!
Such a beautiful story, a beautiful journey of Charlotte and unexpected stranger accompanying her on the road trip to find her mother and make amends. Yet, that unexpected stranger had his own trauma and amends to make but again all about faith and fate and signs bringing those two together, Charlotte and Graham.. I encourage you to get this book and read.. I have read few of her books, she is an amazing writer and her stories just flow and have a purpose and a meaning behind it.. Learned so much about each character, their life, their grief and their "guilt" and how long it took for them to release it and start anew, on their own times/ their own terms....
I just love this book. Anna Gomez has such a great ability to draw you into the story. Somewhere Along the Way is a love story but not just that between a couple. It's a love story about husbands, wives, siblings, and friends. Love lost. Love found. Loved shared. It is all woven together by trust, faith, hope, and peace. Themed with a wonderful, "never give up" spirit. The characters all go through so much together and and alone. Each get stronger because of their love.
Anna is one of my favourite authors. All her books have a beautiful message and they keep me thinking for a long time. Once again Somewhere Along the Way didn't disappointed. It's not a book just for those who have lost a loved one. It's a book for those who are trying to find themselves.
After starting this book, I couldn't put it down. At the same time I wanted to finish I wanted more.
This was a great book. I love how two people end up on a road trip and both learn to heal. It's amazing how their story and trip goes. I loved the ending and how both healed themselves and each other. What an emotional story.
I love a good roadtrip and there was a great one through this story, the route similar to the first road trip I ever took from NY to California. It was a book heavy with grief over the loss of a parent. Read with care.
I first read an Anna Gomez book (My Goodbye Girl) a couple of years ago, & I devoured it. So when she asked me to read this one, I was completely shocked & thrilled! Thank you!
Somewhere Along the Way is a beautiful story about love, loss, and unexpected journeys that life sometimes takes us on.
We meet Charlie who has just suffered the loss of her dad. Not knowing anything about her mom, she is surprised when she finds a box of her letters & realizes her father has been in touch with her mom all this time. She decides to take a cross country trip from Brooklyn to California to learn about this missing part of herself.
On the way, she runs into Graham, who is very mysterious & has a secret identity. He goes with Charlie so he can get home to his family & they both discover, maybe they are exactly what they need.
There were such beautiful moments in this book, specifically in the prologue with the image of Charlie’s father with her as a little girl. So many poignant moments about grief & how it can consume you & heal you. If you’ve ever lost someone, this book could help you mend because you will feel seen and understood.
