Duty & Magic #7

Count Felford's Vessel

Rate this book
My fiancé hates me. Seven long years we have been engaged.

I've completely failed to win him over. Despite being as perfect a vessel-to-be as I can manage.

Men of our station do not marry for love. I don't dare to dream of that.

I do wish the man who will take my body, to take my magic, could at least bear to be in my presence.

Count Felford is young, handsome. Progressive. Everything I could hope for in a husband.

If only I could figure out how to be what he desires.

Instead, it seems I'm destined for an unhappy marriage.

Imagine how much worse it will be if he discovers my secrets?

The fact I like to wear dresses and lingerie is bad enough, but my other secret?

That one could change our world forever.

Count Felford’s Vessel contains, arranged marriage, hurt/comfort, first times, accepting your true self and a literal ‘I will burn the world for him’.

All within an intimacy based magic system, in a modern-day, Regency inspired setting.

**I received an advance review copy for free, and I'm leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you, BookSirens and the author, for the opportunity.

First, I have to admit that I was amazed with the world this author created. This is the 7th book in a series and it not only brought an end to the main plot line, but also worked as a prequel to a new series that came out recently. Technically, it can be read as a stand alone. I did it and understood everything, there are not many cameos or references to previous books. Still, I'm planning on reading the whole series for more background, and to appreciate the amazing world-building. I haven't read anything similar, it was seriously mind blowing.

We have a hidden magical society were mages and vessels are tied together to wield their magic powers. Vessels are considered tools for the mages to use, and a lot of things can be triggering for sensitive readers (dubious consent, sexual abuse by a medical professional, reference to past childhood physical abuse, etc). The main plot line of the series is related to an extremist group of mages that want to open a portal to bring back the legendary (and notoriously cruel) Fey race. MC is the key to success of this operation, and let's say things got wild at the end because I didn't see it coming. It's a HEA, however left me with a bittersweet taste 😭. The couple stayed together, but at what cost? I wanted MC to enjoy his freedom and be fully happy for once in his life without paying such a high price (because he's the sweetest and deserves the world 🥺). I specifically wanted revenge for all his traumas and see him gaining more confidence slowly, but author had other plans 🙂. I expect his parents to perish soon and cruelly in the new series ✨

Leaving behind how unique and well-thought the story was, I was a little apprehensive with ML. I know it's hard to put yourself in someone else's shoes when they are a stranger you don't have a good opinion of, and it's easier to just judge them, but his attitude at the beginning was too disappointing. He's a jerk, but I think that's the point of the character 🤣. He knows it and at least feels guilty about it. MC had no choice when they married and his trust and dependency to his husband came from his indoctrination. That's too close to my limits, although author did a good job portraying how in a situation where they were magically tied together, things couldn't be any better. I just wanted a more sensible partner for Luci because I'm completely biased 😌.

** I’m going to love him, protect him and cherish him so fucking hard that it forces confidence and self worth into him.**

** Anything he wants. Anything at all. If he wants my heart, I’ll gladly cut it out and offer it to him on a plate.**

** He had a choice between the world, or me. He chose me. My Luci chose me.**

Arranged marriage

Lucien and Drew have been arranged to be married for 7 years. Drew hates Lucien at first because he thinks he is stuck up, but he finally sees behind his mask to the hurt broken boy behind it. Lucien wants just wants to be the perfect vessel and consort for Drew. I loved this book, it has the perfect hurt/comfort vibe. Lucien is such a sweet, gentle broken boy. He has had a very rough life and doesn’t understand any type of kindness, once Drew finally realizes that he has the patience of a saint and he makes it his mission to show Lucien how he should be loved and treated. This book was definitely unique, with the mages and vessels. It kind of has the same feel as Alpha/Omega books but different. I’ve never read a book like it and I truly enjoyed it and would 1000% recommend it. This was the first book in the series I have read but I will be going back to read the others.

Count Felford's Vessel brings the Duty & Magic series to an end, but also fills in the holes in the timeline from the DragonKin series and the new series, Fey Lords.

I've enjoyed all the books from this series, but this one focuses mainly on the relationship between the MCs with some of the Revivalist stuff in there too.

Drew and Lucien are in an arranged marriage. Drew doesn't like Lucien for many reasons, yet when he finally gets him alone, he realizes just how mistaken he is in his assumptions.

The pair figure out their relationship, growing into something incredibly sweet, so much so, it's perfectly reasonable the decision Luci makes later on.

I enjoyed the pair together and Luci's gender expression with his clothing. He certainly comes into his own over the course of the book.

Gosh, I love this series so much! With the fullest dose of hurt without any comfort (at first).

Sweet Lucien was trained and indoctrinated to be the best obeying vessel.
He will be handed over to mage Count Felford in an arranged marriage. Only, Lucien knows the Count despises him, he doesn’t know why. He doesn’t know his secret does he?
So yeah, a future full of hate and unhappiness is waiting for him.

And indeed, he can’t do good.

Drew thinks Lucien is haughty, he doesn’t even lift his head to look in his eyes, he only takes a few bites of his food, probably not good enough for him. And a thousand other things he despises Lucien for.
Oh.my.goodness, if he only knew!!

Prepare yourself for a mountain of hurt and misunderstanding. I felt it all, bodily, in my stomach, and my heart. There’s more to this story. If you know the series you know there are forces,
that wants to do wrong.
Overall a smashing written story, with all the feels! Did I mention I love me some hurt comfort? You'll find it here!!

Wow! What a rollercoaster of emotion, the dips and turns, and that ending! I never saw that coming!

Count Felford's Vessel is the last book in the Duty and Magic series, and I'll admit the beginning was hard to read. The complete disaster of a relationship between Drew and Lucien, and Drew's cruelty to Lucien, even if not really intended, was quite intense. But I took comfort in being a long time reader of S.Rodman and I knew things would work out, I just had to keep reading.

Boy, am I glad I did. Drew and Lucien's relationship developed into something truly special leading to the cataclysmic events of the final pages.

Now, I may be living under a rock, but I didn't really connect the Duty and Magic series with the Dragon Kin series (and ultimately the Fey Lords series). Count Felford's Vessel fills in some of the wholes from the Dragon Kin series and bridges the gap between Dragon Kin and the Fey Lords.

I really really don't want to spoil anything, but if you haven't done so already, reading the Dragon Kin series, this one, then the Fey Lords. You will not be sorry!

I can't wait to see what happens next in this world, with it's many offshoots, that S. Rodman has created for us!!

Highly Recommended!!!

Count Felford's Vessel is the 7th book in the Duty & Magic series. Each book can be read as a standalone but why not enjoy the whole series. I have read all the books in the Duty & Magic series and I can tell you that this book about Drew and Lucien is my favorite. I love how different Lucien is from everyone else. I love how the relationship been Drew and Lucien grows and how Drew becomes so protective of Lucien. I love the characters and world building that S Rodman has put into the whole series. I would definitely recommend this book and series as a 5 star read.

Drew & Lucien

I loved reading this finale to the series. Drew and Lucien's relationship is hampered by an arranged marriage situation and unfortunate misconceptions. The story we get as things clear up between them was so good to read.

Lucien has been preparing for his marriage to Count Felford for 7 years. From the beginning we can see that he has lived a very strict existence to become the best Vessel and meet the expectations of her parents.
When he becomes Drew's consort, the first days are not easy at all, both have a wrong perception of the other. In those moments I couldn't stand Drew and even more so when he was in the company of his "best friend."
But I was pleasantly surprised by how Drew evolved, the fact that he understood what was happening and will change, and not only that but that he will help Lucien, he won my heart.
For his part, Lucien tries to understand this new world and adapt, although it is not easy, he has great resilience.
In this volume we see the connection with Dragonkin, since certain people want to open the portal for the Fae to enter the world. And I liked that a lot.
I think my but here is that the ending happens too quickly and they don't show us Luicien's capabilities.
Point in favor for the author for connecting his series.

In Count Felford's Vessel, S. Rodman brings to life a combination of magical and contemporary worlds with eloquent and captivating writing, an exciting and suspenseful plot with surprising turns, and intriguing and charming characters, Lucien and Drew. Their story is a mixture of hate and love, fear and security, betrayal and loyalty, magic, and sacrifice in the name of love. Though Lucien and Drew are mages, deep insight into their emotions and thoughts makes them almost human and easy to relate to.
Eloquent writing and use of words, charming and mysterious characters, and a vibrant and exciting narrative and plot, abundant with magic, twists and turns, danger, and passion, make this book a compelling read.
The novel is part of a series; however, it can be read as a standalone. The introduction and brief explanation of the rules, traditions, and customs of this fantasy world give the reader enough context to understand and follow the story without reading previous books.
Drew is a member of an aristocratic family of mages, with a long tradition of marrying vessels to absorb their magic. Though brought up in traditional ways, he is deviating from living by strict rules and customs, leaning more towards the modern world. Lucien is his diametrical opposite: a vessel, destined by birth and strict, abusive upbringing to please his husband, giving him all of his magic at any cost. The clash of their values and ways seems like an impossible bridge to cross, invoking hate, resentment, fear, and confusion. However, over time Drew realizes that the deep hurt caused by abuse is embedded in Lucien’s personality. When Lucien finally loosens up and lets his true nature shine through layers of protection and fear, Drew realizes his misconceptions. The need to protect Lucien and keep him close and safe turns into tenderness, deep love, and passion.
What to expect? An easy-to-read, compelling, and exciting combination of magic, love, antagonistic emotions, danger, action, and suspense. A thrilling yet heartwarming, easy-to-read romance. What not to expect? A dark drama, full of violence and angst with conflicted, tormented characters, and complex and polarizing topics.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I am having difficulty reviewing this book. There are aspects I like, but there are also glaring issues that led to a lower rating.

I like both main characters. Lucien/Luci is extremely endearing and makes you want to wrap him up and protect him from the awfulness that he endured. He is broken but resilient, and there is hope that he will emerge stronger and whole as time goes on.
Drew is unlikable for the first 30% of the story, and his mistreatment of Luci almost made me stop reading, but he redeems himself and becomes a loving partner. The evolution of their relationship is a high point, keeping me engaged and reading compulsively to find out how their story concludes.

Unfortunately, the conclusion of the story is one of the things that I have an issue with. Although I can sympathize with Luci's decision, I think the repercussions of his actions will ultimately have a negative impact on their HEA. The forced isolation will be problematic eventually no matter how much they love one another. I also think the conclusion was rushed, and it mostly served to bridge two of the author's series.

Another issue with the book is the blase treatment of predatory behavior within the magical society. The vessel trainers are particularly despicable, and I was supremely uncomfortable reading about their "training methods". One trainer in particular has been mentioned in multiple books in this series, and I keep hoping that something will be done to stop their obvious abuse. The whole vessel/mage dynamic is also disturbing, but luckily all of the couples refuse to conform to the oppressive strictures of their magical society.

In conclusion, Luci and Drew are great, but I am not sure their relationship can endure.

How can a book be both light and speedy and dark and harrowing at the same time? I think the books in this series have got darker with each instalment, not necessarily in terms of the main storyline (although the plot-twist end here is not quite the HEA you might expect!) but because the level of trauma and both physical and psychological trauma done to our vessel MCs seems to have got more intense - or at least more explicit - with each book, and by book 7 it's clear mages really are a pretty revolting lot on the whole, and even the 'good' ones probably should go have a long hard think about whether they truly are a better option for a ruling class than the fae. So....if you've read the other books that ramble hopefully made sense, and go ahead and enjoy this one, it's fast-paced, spicy and sweet, and everything you'd expect from this author and series. If you've not read the others, you definitely want to start at the beginning of the series as though each couple's story stands alone within their book, the overall story arc and character appearances make most sense if read in sequence. Count Felford's Vessel runs parallel with two other of Rodman's series - the DragonKin books and the Fey Lords one - and feeds interestingly into the newest series (I won't say more - spoilers!). If you're still reading and haven't started the Duty & Magic series yet - it's essentially hurt/comfort Regency MM romance with both a magical and 0megaverse-esque spicy twist, and look for the trigger warnings.

I almost overlooked this story. What a mistake I was going to make. The first book I've read by this author and boy did it interest me. Intriguing and sad was Lucian's situation with his innocent mind, abused and without his own existence. Drew's character bothered me at first, but then I loved his open mind, his understanding, sensitive, protective and open to change. My heart sank reading from Lucien's point of view, what he experienced and the way he had been prepared for his future. I found myself eager for the outcome since I had not read the previous stories, I had no idea what to expect. I practically devoured reading it and even after finishing the book I was left thinking. I really like these stories with controversial, intense situations, with fiction, magic, mystery, secrets, strong emotions and passion. Of course, the ending left me very curious, and I have every intention of going for other stories. Another author to add to my favorites list.

Count Felford’s Vessel- Luci’s Love

‘His magic pours into me. Molten and iridescent. The very essence of his being, and it is so very beautiful and pure. Just like him. I collapse boneless on the bed, with just enough strength to fall beside him and not squish him. He wriggles around and soon I’m the big spoon and he is the little spoon. His soft hair tickles my nose and I hold him tight. My Luci. My Love. My soul mate.’

Luci is in love with his magi mate, but the feeling is not mutual. Or is it?
In S. Rodman’s latest book in their Duty & Magic MM Modern Regency series, a huge misunderstanding keeps these lovers from forming a symbiotic bond they each need.

Rodman provides emotional stressors that prove that love can eventually overcome the pain of denial, as the happy ever after promised is indeed a sweet one!

I think the problem for me with this book was I knew how, roughly, it was going to end because the fey coming back to earth had been revealed in the previous releases. I’m still uncomfortable with the fey being back and only those in power not being hurt by them. The general public, reading in between the lines, kinda are. It’s all a bit odd. The epilogue was a little out of the ordinary too. I’m also sad that the staff left, although I do know why and would have probably done the same. Urgh I’m uncomfortable (again with that word) with the whole world being sacrificed for one couples love, which we had at the end of dragon kind books. I have to hope that the fey, which are being made out to be big bad, aren’t big bad. We’ve only had one of their stories so far.

But I did enjoy the story and glad they got their HEA.

I really enjoyed this book. I read it on its own, without having read the rest of the series. It works well as a stand and book and has a very nice intro to the world at the start, which is a nice touch.

I absolutely loved the characters. Lucien is super conservative and very submissive. He was trained to be the perfect husband above all else and that his feelings do not matter. Drew is very contrasting as a liberal man, who is very vocal with his opinion. I think they work very well together and Lucien in particular develops a lot throughout the story.

There were a few parts of the story which were tough to read (check the triggers) but they were really integral to the plot and character personalities, rather than just dramatic filler.

Overall a great book. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series now.

very abrupt ending

I like a lot of S. Rodman's books, and I enjoyed the development of Luci and Drew's relationship; however, the ending didn't work in my opinion.

!! Minor spoilers ahead!!!

The ending seemed like it was sacrificed to pave the way for a new series. It felt like it was supposed to be a shocking plot twist, but while I was surprised, I found it really wasn't narratively satisfying. The ending could have been improved by spending more time exploring the ramifications of Luci's actions and the complicated emotions Drew and Luci must feel, rather than just hand waving that everything was fine for most people. The whole ending felt abrupt and forced, and it was disappointing that a different avenue wasn't chosen that could have shown Luci's personal growth.

This book was so good I read it in one sitting. Poor Lucien had been abused in so many ways growing up that he didn’t even realize how awful his childhood had been. It was nice to see him shaking off some of his programming. In the beginning I wasn’t too sure of Drew but he turned out great. He really stepped up and helped Luci find his true self.

Unfortunately Luci’s parents and Gregory had no such redeeming qualities. While I definitely enjoyed this book it seemed more like a HFN instead of HEA so I hope we see more of these guys in the future.

Since I don’t think it’s a spoiler, I will admit, it did take me until almost the end to figure out the other series this is tied to!

Luci was absolutely adorable. He tried so hard to be perfect, not realizing that it was his supposed imperfections which attracted his husband. Both Drew and him were overthinkers. And Drew researching BDSM in order to please his consort was rather sweet.

A good pairing, chemistry wise. Lots of steam, very sensual. I love how all these books blend the Regency manners with the 21rst century. real secondaries, they were just part of the background scenery.

So is this the last book in the Duty & Magic series? It works very well as an introduction to the Fey Lords series. But I really don't want to let this series go. Maybe a reread binge of the DragonKin and D&M books is needed to "best" enjoy the next Fae Lords book. Oh, what a terrible hardship!

I enjoyed this book. The story of Luci and Drew. Description of the characters was heartwarming. Luci who has experienced some trauma. Parents who forced him from his youth. And now he meets Drew. Drew who doesn't actually like him, but gradually discovers how damaged Luci is. I loved the twist in the story, Luci who likes assignments, which also gives him more stability and peace. And Drew gets to know his vessel, consort, better. The world they live in is also well described, I experience it as very normal and not strange at all. Also important to know how the Fae came to control the world. Easy to read and highly recommended.

An amazing paranormal hurt/comfort book with an absolute sad boy MC and his prick of a husband... who redeems himself. You can't help but root for them—the acceptance and caretaking are to die for.

I am quite easy to please. Give me a great hurt/comfort read with caretaking, and there's a high chance I will love it. At first, I didn't believe I would actually fall for both MCs, but oh boy, was I wrong. Lucien is the kind of character you want to wrap in a blanket, give comfort food to, and protect from the world. Drew... was difficult. I struggled with him but also understood where he was coming from, a little. I mean, he's a first-class douchebag for the first 30% or so. But later? I melted whenever he tried to redeem himself. The "touch him and die" vibe was serious by the end.

The spice had lots of D/s undertones and some kinks so it was always interesting with a pleasure Dom and some lingerie (and an androgynous MC).

There's also some plot that made me interested in the series. I'm glad I enjoyed this book and that it was intriguing enough for me to ask for more because I know this won't be my last time reading anything by S. Rodman!

This has been another exceptional series from S Rodman and I have loved every book but I have to say this is my favourite. I just loved Luci he suffered so much emotionally for quite a few years of their marriage and though I did not like Drew to start he definitely grew on me especially with how caring he became of Luci. It was such an emotional journey following them as they figure out their relationship which eventually evolves into something so caring and sweet. I loved the twists and turns that kept me completely enthralled from beginning to the end!

Wow. As we are up to book 7 in the Duty & Magic series, I thought I knew what to expect from this book but that ending shocked me!!

After meeting Lucien & Drew in a previous book I was looking forward to exploring their history and dynamic. It was lovely to see them break down their preconceived notions of each other and build their own relationship outside of the influence of others.

With how the book ended, I'm very intrigued as to whether or not we'll be seeing more of these characters! I know I'm definitely keen to see what's next from Rodman.

Count Felford is young, handsome. Progressive. Everything Luci could hope for in a husband. Yet they had a seven year engagement and still he feels hated. Instead, it seems he's destined for an unhappy marriage. Imagine how much worse it will be if he discovers his secrets? The fact he likes to wear dresses and lingerie is bad enough, but his other secret? That one could change their world forever.

I enjoyed this story but felt it missed a little more after they had found a more affectionate relationship between them. The ending was very dramatic and unfortunate for the world. Easy to read, feel and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.

What a story! My heart just broke for Luci and the everything he had to go through. And when Drew realised what was what, he totally redeemed himself and was the perfect person for Luci. Although the ending didn't completely satisfy me (I like my happy endings and the bad guys not getting even an inch), I appreciate that the story ties into other stories from this author. I recommend this book and I think that it should really be read before the "Fey Conquest" book.

This series is a bit dark so be aware. It’s worth a read but heed the triggers the author makes readily available. I love the mix of modern and regency and magic involved in this world. It is a fascinating take.

Poor Luci has not had an easy life but he does his best to be the perfect vessel, just like he was taught. Drew and Luci have been engaged for years but it is built on falsehoods. It is up to them to find the truth. I was NOT expecting that ending though and am curious to see what happens next.

I wanted to give Luci a big hug. The poor guy had been abused and used by those that should have loved him unconditionally.

I had mixed feelings about about Drew and his behaviour towards Luci. However, when he started putting the puzzle pieces together - he became more understanding, considerate and patient. He showed Luci what it was like to be loved and cared for.

Fantastic book and I really enjoyed it.
