Witches’s War : Volume 1|De Makoto Shiozuka|Pika édition|2022
Bien le bonjour mes Phoenix volants !! ;- )…
A suivre.

This wasn’t for me. A demon brings 32 women from history to an arena to fight to death. The winner gets what she desires the most. They’re strong, powerful, greedy and remarkable women, and so are called witches. They have one thing in common: they strongly desire something. All except Jeanne d’Arc who doesn’t seem to have a single desire. The plot consists of battles between the women. In the first volume there was room for one battle, but likely more take place in following volumes, otherwise this will take forever.

I find manga with extended battles boring, especially in this format where the reader has no conncetion with the combatants, so it’s basically the same who wins. Jeanne d’Arc seems to be the main character, so the reader might start rooting for her in later volumes. I’m not reading more though.

I received a free copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

I didn't think I would like this one but I had a pretty good time reading it! It's a tournament to the death between 32 historical figures (all women) (jeanne d'arc, cleopatra, elisabeth Bathory, etc.) and I'm quite curious to see where this will go.

I was about to start reading Tenkaichi - Nihon Saikyou Bugeisha Ketteisen, but stumbled upon this manga when browsing the other on Amazon JP. I knew the artist of Tenkaichi did a King of Fighters manga, so at first glance I thought that this was the very same, and that the characters on the cover here were redesigned Yuri and Kula.... It didn't take long to realize my mistake, but I was still intrigued by the idea of sexy witches battling in a martial arts tournament, so I decided to check this out.

Frankly... this is just Fate/. I mean, more than half the characters summoned throughout history to be witches have already appeared in Fate/Grand Order, and the tournament premise could be seen as a more orderly version of the Seihai Sensou. Hell, the grand prize at the end of the tournament is to have a wish granted! There's also a feeling like being a truncated Madoka Magica; in that anime, girls become magical girls after being granted a wish, and their desire ultimately corrupts them into witches. Here, some steps are skipped over, and women are turned directly into witches fueled by their desires. Jeanne d'Arc stars in a Madoka spinoff, as well as in Fate/Apocrypha and the "Orleans" story of F/GO, and she's our focal character here. At the end of the volume, the desireless Jeanne decides to power herself with the desire for "desire," which, at a stretch, can be said to resemble Madoka's anti-wish, if I may be so bold in drawing comparison where unnecessary....

The story begins with Jeanne d'Arc being saved from burning at the stake, by twin demons Lilith and Lilim. They are brought before the demon queen, Agrat, to be informed she (ie, Jeanne) is the thirty-second woman chosen for the Walpurgisnacht witch tournament. What follows is a brief display of power to give readers a taste of how shit will work going forward: Marie Antoinette tries rebelling against Agrat, Lilith and Lilim summon a chimera on her, Marie Antoinette uses her desire for order to transform and throw the chimera into a giant guillotine, and as she's about to flex on Jeanne she is disrupted by Tomoe Gozen, who shows a calmer / more-heroic disposition (and thus suggesting that not every "witch" will be a crazy-ass bitch). The next chapter begins the tournament proper, with Tomoe Gozen battling Bathory Elizabeth, while another demon, Lilitu, acts as MC/announcer. The battle lasts the rest of the volume, not quite complete by volume's end, and with Jeanne preparing for her fight in the last few pages.

The way witches work is, again, quite similar to Fate/. Witches have two special abilities: Magic and Magic Vestments. The Magic Vestments are their transformed state, which is basically just a Second or Third Ascension from F/GO, or, perhaps more genuinely accurately, a regular magical girl transformation. The term "Magic" itself seems to be focused mostly on the witches' super moves, not unlike Noble Phantasms: Bathory uses Unlimited Blade Works or Enuma Elish with torture instruments instead of swords, and Tomoe summons a large bow not unlike any other Archer-class Servant. It's probably silly to keep comparing to Fate/, but I do feel like the influence was conscious for the authors. Anyway, before it comes time to activate Magic, the witches stick with physical strength, stamina, and agility by battling with more conventional melee weapons. I've only read the one volume so far, but I can imagine it has set a standard for the future, and that most later battles will have witches hitting each other with regular weapons until the authors determine it's time to activate Magic, whereupon the second witch would use her Magic to counter the first's.

The concept is fun, and the action is cool, but perhaps more important is the sexy fanservice: Lilith and Lilim's hips...! Agrat's boobs...! Lilith and Lilim with glasses...! Marie Antoinette's legs...! Tomoe Gozen's thighs...! Lilitu's hips...! Bathory's boobs and legs...! Bathory's Magic Vestment making her look like an older Kula Diamond...! Bathory's butt in her new suit as she counters Tomoe's attack...! Bathory's butt when she's on the floor after Tomoe's kick...!!! Actually... Bathory's butt throughout the entire battle...! And her hips...! Her fucking hips when ...!

It is time to duuuueeelll! Say hello to 32 women from history, all greedy witches, who will have to battle to get their wishes fulfilled.

I am so happy with Comics Plus, thanks to that one I discover so many fabulous fun comics and manga. Including this one! I saw this one pop up and just had to read it. The cover called me and I loved the premise and was curious who, next to Jean d’Arc, was going to fight for their wishes and desires.

In this one we meet Jean D’Arc (she will be the main character I am guessing) and see her past, see her fights, see her youth, and see her get burned at the stake. But that is when things change for her. She is getting the chance to live again. Of course, me being me, I saw two cute demons and was like NOPE, don’t fall for it, no matter how cute. But then again, if you are burning at the stake… I guess you just don’t have much choice. And from that moment the story truly starts. We see Jean come into a room filled with hooded figures, we get a speech by the demon queen, we hear about the stakes. The loser will never ever ever get reincarnated (ouch though in some cases that is fine with me given that there are some in this group that you just don’t want back on earth) and the winner will get their deepest wish/desire fulfilled.

I loved all the big names, Agatha Christie, Mary Read, Orihime, Cleopatra, Agatha Christie to name a few. Some I don’t know or only vaguely, but I will definitely be excited for each of the witches/ladies who will appear, it quite a fun idea to pick famous ladies from history and have them duke it out. I have no clue on accuracy but from the three we have seen so far that I recognise it seems to go at least mostly accurate.

In this first volume we get a glimpse of Antoinette’s powers, and a lot of glimpses at Bathory and Gozen. How they match with their desires, their history, what they did. From Bathory and her powers being all torture to Gozen’s samurai prowess. The battle between these two was a freaking ride, but at times a bit much given how Bathory goes for torture. That fingernail brought back the PTSD I got from that scene in Higurashi 🤢🤢🤢🤢. But despite how gory it got I couldn’t stop reading. Though I was definitely rooting for Gozen. Bathory is already a nope for me and given how craycray she got eh nope.

I am wondering if each of the volumes will feature the battle between two witches because then we will be here for a while. There are 16 preliminary matches. I hope that along the way we get something different or that things won’t take almost a whole volume. Maybe two or three matches per volume? I will at least give it a go because I am curious, but if it is just one battle at a time with some hints to Jean, I will probably drop it.

I do love seeing and getting to know Jean more. We see her struggle, but also see her wonder if she has a desire. Because everyone has one, most of them very clearly, and Jean just doesn’t know what she wants, which is logical given her past and her parents and everything. But I am happy with the ending of this volume and what happened there.

The art was pretty kick-ass. I like the designs for the girls and I am curious to see the rest of the witches!

All in all, this was a really kick-ass volume and I will definitely keep on reading. If you like famous people x witches x fights that go to the death x fab art try this one out!

Spectacular designs. The details of clothing and weapons are accurate. Fascinating duels. I appreciated the digression into the lives of the contestants. I guess who will win, but I am curious about the development.

Read in Japanese. Enjoyed when Tomoe pulled out the bow (since archery was such a big thing during the Heike Monogatari). Enjoyed the historical aspect of the normal anime battle storyline.

Probably not the most applicable place to learn vocab but I find the stuff interesting lol.
