"This book has it all ... like reading an "After the Battle" and "Panzerwrecks" combined ... highly recommended " --Chuck Aleshire, AMPS Chicagoland Combat chronicle of the German Tiger tank--one of World War II's best--during the Normandy campaign (June to August 1944) First time in English New details on famous tank ace Michael Wittmann How the Tiger performed against Allied armor, particularly the Sherman Maps, orders of battle, period photos, and then-and-now shots make this the go-to book on the subject.
This is a fantastic story of the German Tiger tanks in Normandy after the Allied invasion of 1944. It follows each tank. The tigers were incredibly superior to any allied tanks, except the Sherman Firefly. And the overwhelming advantage of Allied air and sea power were also apparent. It took days, sometimes weeks for the tanks to get to Normandy traveling only during the darkest night hours and then hiding under camouflage during the days. An extremely informative book.
An excellent "blow-by-blow" account of the heavy panzer battalions' fight in the Normandy front of World War Two. Most of the book focuses on tank battles from the German perspective, but many accounts from the Allied point of view are included. There's a LOT of pictures and maps, but the quality in Kindle edition is mediocre at best. Most maps are too fuzzy to read, even on an iPad. The narrative, however, is excellent.
This is an academic work by a respected German war historian. It's a granular action-by-action account of the Tiger-equipped German units in Normandy. So don't expect heroic action accounts, and even the analysis is minimal. As such, and despite the tiny errors, which could easily have occurred during translation, it is absolutely top-notch, and the photographic documentation is exhaustive. It's initially odd to hear of the Allies described as the enemy, but of course this makes perfect sense given the perspective.
