This is the second book in the Secret, Book, and Scone Society cozy mystery series. It take place in Miracle Springs, North Carolina. This book is about solving the murder mystery of a young teen name Abilene. I think the book was fun and cute with a little mystery throw in. I love cozy mysteries like that, so of curse I really liked this book. Also Ellery Adam is quickly becoming one of my favorite cozy mystery authors. (*)

The Whispered Word by Ellery Adams is the second book in this series.
I was blown away with this story. I could feel the pain of each character, whether it was mental anguish or physical pain, the author described the emotions in such detail, that it was easy to get caught up in each of their stories.
Nora Pennington is a wonderful character. Her story is tragic, but teaches her the lessons of life and she experiences each new day with courage.
Her friends, Estella, June and Hester are special in their own way, and the ladies all meld and work well together.

In this story, we are introduced to Abilene, a young girl who has lived with neglect, torture and pain.
Her story is so touching, you will find yourself wanting to reach out and help her as well.

Even after I was finished with the book, I found my mind wandering back to the story, to the characters and the ending.
This book touched my heart and even though this is a cozy mystery, it brings out many emotions that will leave you with a good feeling.

Ellery Adams weaves a tale so realistic, you will feel like you are in Miracle Springs, visiting Hester and June, stopping in to see Estella for a wash and cut, and of course browsing the books in Nora's shop. I would definitely order a drink and a book pocket.

I volunteered to read and review an ARC of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley.

The Whispered Word by Ellery Adams is the second book of the cozy Secret, Book, & Scone Society mystery series. While the characters were introduced in the first book each book does contain it’s own mystery to be solved so it would be possible to understand without having read the first although some character development will be missing by skipping ahead.

The Secret, Book, & Scone Society mystery series takes place in Miracle Springs, North Carolina, a small town that is known to be a place of healing. Not only is there a natural hot springs and renowned spa available but many of the shopkeepers in town have their own signature way of healing visitors. Nora Pennington is one of those shopkeepers being the owner of Miracle Books where she considers herself a bit of a bibliotherapist being able to talk with a customer and since which book would help them with their own problems.

Nora and three other shopkeepers, Hester, June and Estella, have teamed up to form the Secret, Book, & Scone Society and when a young girl, Abilene, crosses their paths the ladies know it’s up to them to help her heal. However, shortly after Abilene comes into their lives the body of a local woman is found it comes to question if Abilene had anything to do with the murder so Nora and the rest of the ladies do what they can to find out the truth.

The Secret, Book, and Scone Society series is as much of a cozy mystery read as it is an emotional one. The setting of Miracle Springs gives a whole cast of characters with their own emotional story to tell. But along with the healing theme of the books readers will also be pleased with the bookstore setting and mentions of all kinds of book titles and quotes infused in the stories. Tie all of this up around a mystery to be solved and it’s certainly a unique series to follow.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

This is the second book in the Secret Book & Scone Society series and I did not enjoy it nearly as much as the first one. I found this instalment to be a bit too saccharin in parts and the quotes and advice that were trotted out read more like a text book than something a person would actually say.
The plot read quite well with a mystery girl turning up in town at the same time as a local lady is found dead in a pond. Are the two events related? Nora seems to think so, and soon she, Hester, June and Estella (the 'society') set about their own investigation into matters.
I think I will leave that series here and not continue with it for now.

This was a fun cozy mystery set in Miracle Springs, North Carolina! I love the beautiful cover and I think that's one of the reasons I chose this one; that and the fact that I'm a sucker for cozy mysteries! Four of the small town's businesswoment/shopkeepers form the Secret, Book & Scone Society - Nora, Estella, June and Hester. They are four close friends who support each other and have already solved at least one mystery together (it's not really described in the book, but since this is #2 in the series you know there was a first).

This mystery involves a young teen, Abilene, who needs help and a murder that happened around the time of her arrival in town. My heart went out to Abilene who had a heartbreaking story.

The Society's members are strong women who support each other and their community. They are interesting characters - especially Nora who owns the bookstore and is scarred by fire. The theme of healing runs throughout the book.

Thanks to Ellery Adams and Kensington Books through Netgalley for an advance copy.

I enjoy reading cozy mysteries to relax and unwind. I particularly enjoy reading cozy mysteries in the autumn. I was very pleased with my most recent choice of books, “The Whispered Word.” The Secret Bone and Scone Society are a group of fiction-loving bibliophiles in Miracle Springs, NC. Nora happily runs Miracle Books and her friend Hester owns the local bakery. When they discover a frail girl with bruises and a medical I.D. bracelet stowed amongst the shelves in Miracle Books, the group quickly come to the girl’s aid. When a customer is found dead the group begin to wonder if the secretive girl has something to do with the tragedy. When another body is found they become determined to get to the bottom of the alarming and unfortunate events before someone becomes the next victim. This is a talented author. I hope there will be many more books in this series!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Secret, Book, and Scone Society Members

Nora, the owner of Miracle Books, tries to heal people woes with a unique set of books she personally selects for them.

Hester runs the Gingerbread House bakery. Customers tell her a little bit about their lives and what brought them to Miracle Springs. Then she bakes them up a “comfort scone”.

June works at the hot springs spa where people come to rejuvenate themselves.

Estella is a beautician who tries to help her clients find their true selves.

Working together they try to help people, like Abilene, a young woman that has found her way to Nora’s shop wearing a dress that is way to big for her, a hospital ID bracelet and visible bruises. The ladies try to take her under their wing by offering a job and finding her a place to stay. Abilene has secrets and she is nowhere close to being reading to share them. Nora has a feeling one of her secrets connects her to a woman found dead from an apparent suicide.

There is also a new business in Miracle Springs. A business that helps customers sell their collectibles and other goods online. The grand opening had people lined up and down the street. The shop seems to be on the up and up but Nora is keeping an eye on the place. She doesn’t have a lot of confidence in the new sheriff, and she has no trouble barging into any of his investigations, especially after another body is found.

As in the first book another victim of an apparent suicide until The Secret, Book, and Scone Society digs deeper. Until my son took his life I never realized how many deaths in mysteries are first categorized as probable suicides. Each time I come across this now in a book I have to pause and tell myself that 99% of the time, that is not the case and to keep reading. I don’t want to spoil anything but the woman did not take her own life. In fact, what unfolds is a well-plotted mystery that tangles around and around and around again before the real culprit becomes clear. And again, like in the first book, the wonderful core characters of The Secret, Book, and Scone Society grow and learn more about themselves in the process.

I love the compassion these women have for almost everyone they meet. People in Miracle Springs are struggling due to the poor economy and immediately they try to do something to help. They have come up with a nice little idea to help some folks a bit. Also, the way they opened their hearts to a complete stranger in Abilene was so telling and heartwarming. These are flawed characters, with their own issues, yet they can set them aside for others in need.

Miracle Springs sounds like a perfect place to visit. A town based on healing the body, soul, and mind. It also a perfect place to set a cozy mystery series because there is always a new batch of people coming to town. Our family’s best vacation ever was to North Carolina, days spent by the ocean had their own healing effect, so I can totally understand why Ms. Adams has chosen this locale for this story and others.

Another great read from this author. It can be read all on its own too!

Another book in the series about a group of traumatized women who find friendship and healing with each other. The group expands to include a troubled and abused young woman and, as usual, a murder in their small town calls them to action. Enjoyable.

The Whispered Word by Ellery Adams takes place in the imaginary, small North Carolina town of Miracle Springs, a place where people come for healing of mind, body, and spirit. The central characters are Nora, Hester, June and Estella who together form the Secret, Books, and Scone Society. As the story opens, Nora discovers a young woman who says her name is Abilene, hiding in her bookstore.

The book manages to convey a sense of mystic and healing that makes the town a desirable place for tourists who are seeking healing waters at the local springs or solace and renewal within the retail spaces throughout the area. Nora’s bookstore is one of the central destinations for visitors, where she offers what she calls bibliotherapy for those in need. Likewise, Hester offers baked goods with healing properties and June is connected to the local hot springs. All four women have secrets of their own that have brought them together to form a friendship and society focused on supporting each other and helping those around them in need.

Abilene’s appearance is a complete mystery, as she shows up in clothes that are clearly not her own, wearing a hospital bracelet and refusing to talk to Nora or her friends. She demonstrates hidden skills in designing a beautiful window display overnight and in baking some unexpected, delicious treats in Hester’s bakery. Still, most of the women’s questions about Abilene go unanswered as other mysteries develop, such as was the woman in the pond a victim of suicide or murder, what does she have to do with Abilene, who are the new business owners who’ve moved in to offer consignment selling to the town’s residents who have recently experienced financial hardships, and how are they connected to the dead woman’s son.

This is the second book in the series and initially it felt as thought I was trying to play catch up in terms of the backstory for the four central characters. As the book progresses, some of Nora’s past and the reasons for her disfiguring burns are revealed as are some details for Hester and Estella. It is unclear if this information was more fully revealed in the first of the series. While the mystery itself is completely self-contained and does not require having read the first book in the series, at first there was a feeling of a few missing details. As the book continued, this became less important and the current mystery and its resolution became the central focus of the novel.

The book was well paced and provided an intriguing description of a town that beckons you to at least visit, if not consider moving there. Adams has created an atmosphere that conveys a sense of place that would provide soothing and peace, even in the midst of struggle and pain. The three friends are central to this feeling as they seek to heal wounds to the townspeople through anonymous gifts left on doorsteps in the evening along with the books from Nora’s shop, delicious treats that delight the taste buds from Hester’s bakery.

There are multiple threads throughout the novel that tie together into one cohesive story. These are well placed and serve to pull the reader through the book at a good pace and at the same time fit together smoothly to form a complex tale.

The conclusion of the book is thoroughly satisfying. I was intrigued enough to want to read the initial book in the series as well as being interested in following any future adventures of the Secret, Books, and Scones Society. There were ample opportunities to solve the mystery itself, if you weren’t so lost in the tale you just went along for the ride, as well as a nice, if somewhat predictable twist at the end. Overall, this is a series I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a new cozy series.

My thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books for supplying an advanced digital copy with no requirement for a positive review. The opinions stated here are entirely my own.

An excellent story! As this superb murder mystery begins to unfold, it’s completely absorbing and hard to put down. The mystery is awesome! Clue after clue is revealed until all the connections are made and readers can understand who all the players are and why they acted as they did.

What captures my attention in this story (as it did in the first story) is the generosity of giving that each woman in the Secret, Book, and Scone Society cultivates. Through books, baking, knitting, etc., they all reveal their inner spirits and help each other and those they come across enduring hard situations.

The cast of characters is diverse and savvy. Many emotions are experienced during the storytelling. This novel can stand alone, however, I believe it is more enjoyable if you’ve read book 1 first and are familiar with the protagonist, Nora, and the other prominent characters. I highly recommend the Secret, Book, and Scone Society cozy mystery series.

Thanks to the author for a galley arc. This review is my honest opinion.

I'm not sure what it is about the writing, but it leaves me cold. I don't like the characters, and all of their tragic backstories seem so forced that I'm not interested. I feel there are some major logic issues when it comes to solving the mystery, and Nora particularly annoys me with ineptitude. She often is far too aggressive and screws it all up when "investigating." It's baffling that the author seems to be hinting at a possible romance with the sheriff while she's also having a relationship with Jed (which quite frankly was somewhat out of the blue). All of the women overreact to mild triggers, so it’s hard to take them seriously. Hester couldn’t even admit that a strange girl wearing a dead woman’s clothes might be a tiny bit suspicious.

The mystery in this one is convoluted and not one that the reader can solve. The whole business with Abilene being imprisoned and only allowed to read books that her uncle allowed her...she's rather well read for someone that had a horrible guy like that picking her books. Abilene also clearly says that her uncle never wrote back to Amanda, so how is it claiming that she was disillusioned by his mean letters at the end? Also, why wouldn't she just return the stupid book/watch? Why exactly couldn't Ezekiel just lock Abilene in the basement for a day or so (like he ALREADY DID) to pop over and get the book back? How did Abilene go from Texas to North Carolina if she was only wearing a hospital gown for a portion of that trip? How is that logical? How did Tamara know that Amanda had the book? How could she cut a sentence out of a letter and the police believe it was a suicide note? Why did she spike Amanda's tea if she didn't intend to kill her to begin with? Apparently Amanda was just chatting away, despite supposedly being paranoid after seeing Ezekiel. How did Tamara and Griffin get away with what they were doing? If they're stealing from all these people, no one catches them ever? He just happened to have an exact duplicate of this expensive, rare watch? With the same family crest on it as the other one? I did not even understand the weird plan that Nora and her friends pulled off - Estella suddenly accusing Tamara of having cheap chocolate, Jack accusing Estella of not caring about his box, suddenly Estella turning on Tamara...it just didn't make sense. Tamara apparently thought she could kill Nora and get away, but why? Why not just leave? A pillow is NOT going to muffle a gunshot. Seriously. What kind of crappy plans are these?

Other questions: How did the bank go under from the crappy loans in the previous book? The money was still sitting in the perpetrators' accounts, not to mention that houses didn't actually get built, so it's not like they lost money there. And even if it did go under, why didn't people get their money back from FDIC? I'm unclear why Nora ditched her mother as well when she left her old life behind - it really does not make sense to me. Yes, she got drunk and almost killed two people, but let's be honest - your family and friends don't actually ditch you because of that. Especially when the accident happened because your shitty husband was cheating on you (did she spend time in prison for a DUI? I don't recall, but it doesn't seem like it). So many things about her story are just off.

Who on earth starts a pan of bacon and then goes to watch TV? Passing out aside, how long does he think it takes bacon to cook? Why does this tiny town in north Carolina have a completely vegetarian festival? I guess Abilene is theoretically rich after the book, but no mention is made of this. It’s nice to know that her parents leaving a fortune and saying she was a treasure was enough to wipe out her years of resentment that they abandoned her. By the way, you can designate non-family to be guardians of your kids. Or if Ezekiel didn’t want her, he didn’t need to take her from the couple she was with.

As you can see, I ended up with a lot of questions and feeling annoyed after reading this. It's not that the writing is bad, but it's not good either. It's also a bit distracting when the author drops the titles of other books into it.

I loved the first book in the series so when I was offered the chance to read and review an ARC of the second book I didn't hesitate. This one was just as good as the first. Like wrapping yourself in a warm blanket, this book invited you to get comfortable and stay awhile. I was engaged for the first two pages. Ms. Adams has created and town and characters that are warm and welcoming. Miracle Springs is a quaint setting where people come to get a second chance. These four women are expertly written and come across the page as well defined, warm, caring, flawed, struggling, hesitant, cautious but willing to create a new life and new friends even if that comes with some pain but ultimately human. The mystery takes you on a journey through the entire story and provides enough clues along the way with some twists and turns to throw the reader off track. I couldn't put this book down and just wanted to extend my time in Miracle Springs with the Secret, Book & Scone Society. I will definitely be back for a return trip when book three comes out. I am hoping that this series will be around for a while.

Thank you Netgalley and Kensington Books for the ARC.

How I would love to visit Miracle Books with its purple chairs, writer inspired beverages, delicious book pastries and pretty shelf enhancers. Oh yes, it's the ultimate hangout for booklovers.
It is also where the four ladyfriends of the The Secrets, Books and Scones Society gather to solve everyday mysteries and share a snack or two. Their next case arrives one day in a hospital dress, a young girl hiding among the books. Who is this girl, where does she come from, why doesn't she talk?
And what about the two deaths that upset the calm of Miracle Springs, are they accidents or related to the girl?
This cosy murder mystery is a gem, filled with interesting characters, set in gorgeous surroundings, moving at great pace. I couldn't put it down.
I also loved the opening quote at each chapter and all the title recommendations in between.

"In the company of a thousand stories, of a thousand voices, she felt at peace."

Wow! Take that for a comfort scone!

I'm loving this series. The characters are so well written. I love the town of Miracle Springs. I wish I lived in a town like that. I love the friendships with Nora and her friends. I liked the introduction of Abilene. I said in my last review how I love the way the author adds details to a setting. Here's an example I'll share when she talks about autumn. My absolute favorite season. "As Nora walked, she noticed the beauty surrounding her. The morning sun bathed the park, and the maple trees held the golden light captive. Dried leaves skipped over the sidewalks like children heading home from school." There's more to the description but I don't want to give it all away 🙃 . The whole paragraph made me long for fall and it's only currently February. I have the third book ready and am looking forward to what the next story's about. Highly recommend this series. Happy reading! 📙🥰

The Whispered Word (5 Stars)
By: Ellery Adams
(A Secret, Book, and Scone Society #2)
Cozy Mystery, Bookstore, Mystery, Book Therapy
Location: Miracle Springs, North Carolina

The whispered word is “run.” This single word will change lives, and create a domino effect.
Who said it? Who did she say it to? Why was this one word so important? Find out in this five star read!

The Whispered Word by Ellery Adams is the second book in the Secret, Book, and Scone Society. Four strong-willed women Nora, June, Hester, and Estelle form a secret group, and they all have scars (some visual and many deep seeded emotional). But it’s hard to keep secrets in the small tourist town of Miracle Springs, where legends of healing waters attract people from near and far.

When a mysterious woman, with refined special talents, becomes a stowaway in Nora’s bookstore, she is conflicted about how to handle the young woman with a hospital bracelet, bruises, and reluctance to reveal anything about herself. However, the enigmatic woman is not the only person who has captured the attention of this small community.

Griffin Kingsley appears in town as if he rode a magic carpet out of thin air. At least that is how this tight-knit community treats this stranger who brings his Arabian themed business Virtual Genie into Miracle Springs. The town’s people have fallen on hard times, so Kingsley is highly scrutinized because he sells their valuable items online.

A questionable death, stolen prized books, and a murder have everyone looking over their shoulders and at each other. Suspicion is immediately cast on the newcomers, and it is up to the four women to decide if their new acquaintance is a friend or killer.

Technically, you could jump this second installment without reading the first book in the series, but the four main protagonists are complex and fascinating. You will want to read the first book before this one! This is not your “light” beach read a cozy mystery. Adams has created a borderline mainstream mystery with her beautiful metaphors and enchanting imagery. This book will captivate you until the end, and then you will want more. Warm up your cocoa, find a comfy chair, and enjoy the journey!

The Whispered Word features a fantastic mystery and was a fun read from start to finish.

Nora Pennington, owner of Miracle Books, as well as the other members of the Secret, Book, and Scone Society know that sometimes people need a bit of help every now and then. Such is the case when a thin girl covered in bruises is found hiding in Nora’s bookstore. Though Nora and her friends offer their assistance, Abilene is reluctant to share her secrets. After a local woman is found dead and signs point to Abilene having contact with the woman, Nora is determined to investigate.

The mystery in this book was much better than the first book in the series which was a relief as I was disappointed with the mystery in the first book. Abilene’s story was fascinating and I was curious to see how she would end up being connected to the woman found dead. The connection was surprising and led to us learning some interesting things about Abilene’s past. The introduction of the auction business added a surprising element that led to some intriguing developments towards the end of the book.

I continue to really enjoy the friendship between Nora, Hester, June, and Estella. Their bond is wonderful and I was happy to see them grow even closer in this book. Despite their closeness, there is a bit of tension in the friendship after Abilene is introduced as they don’t all agree on how they should handle her secret past and her connection to the dead woman. My only complaint was the blind trust one of the women had for Abilene and how she refused to see reason. Once you find out why she behaved that way it made sense but that didn’t stop me from being annoyed.

I definitely enjoyed The Whispered Word more than I did the first book in the series and I’m excited to see where the author takes these characters next.

I'm so glad the two books in this series didn't end right after the killer was caught and brought to justice. With these characters, there is always just so much more to be learned and time to be spent with them. I love how this book ended after the showdown. There was absolutely no disappointment here! I hadn't seen this killer coming at all!

At the end of the Secret, Book and Scone Society, a girl had shown up at Miracle Books after Nora had put up a Help Wanted sign. This book started right up telling about her and how she was a huge help to Nora, but moreso to Hester, since she was an accomplished baker. The girl called herself Abilene, and she continued to be a mystery. The four friends realized she was running from something or someone. When three murders struck within just a few weeks, Nora couldn't help but wonder if their new friend had some connection to them. There was also a new business in town, one that took valuables on consignment. Nora couldn't help but be suspicious of that as well, since their town had just undergone an economic crisis and people were anxious to sell items they had just to keep food on their tables.

It was great visiting with these four friends again. The interim sheriff was a breath of fresh air compared to the old one and it was sweet that Nora and Jed were becoming a lot closer. I enjoyed the little side stories of Nora doing her bibliotherapy for people. For any book clubs wanting to have a discussion on this book, there are some questions in the back that the author has provided. I have a book hangover now...not sure when I'll want to start another one, this one was that amazing.

The first book in this series, The Secret, Book & Scone Society, was so intriguing that I could hardly wait to see how the series progressed. And truth be told, The Whispered Word is even better. Nora Pennington runs a bookshop in Miracle Springs, NC, and shares a passion for helping others in the community with her three close friends, a baker, a hair stylist, and a spa employee. In The Whispered Word, a mysterious young woman who loves books as much as Nora does takes refuge in the bookshop, and the four friends recognize another deeply wounded soul when they see one. Then murder intervenes, and they find themselves questioning every thing they know about the young stranger, even as they try to help her.

Highly recommended!

This is one of the BEST cozies I've read in a while. it grabs you in chapter one and hold you till the last period of the last sentence. There were moments my heart would race during tense moments. I had a hard time putting this book down. It was a little edgier for a cozy which I liked. I highly recommend this one.

The Whispered Word brings a welcome return to Miracle Springs, North Carolina and this memorable cast of characters!!

Not only do I salute Ellery Adams for a terrific follow-up in this cozy series, but thanks to her for fighting for the Oxford comma this time. The Secret, Book, and Scone Society returns!!

When Nora, owner of Miracle Books, finds a young woman asleep in her store, she and her friends don’t know what to make of her—she’s wearing ill-fitting clothes and a hospital bracelet. Nora knows all too well what it’s like to be running from something, so while the thought of sharing her space with a stranger doesn’t thrill her, she wants the woman to know she’s not alone.

This woman, who says her name is Abilene, is clearly hiding something. Nora and her friends know that you have to be ready to trust others when you share your story. But when a customer of Nora’s dies in what is assumed to be a suicide, they discover a connection to Abilene that leaves them wondering whether to worry she might be next—or if she’s hiding something sinister.

When another death occurs, once again, Nora, Hester, June, and Estella try to figure it all out before disaster strikes even closer to home. And once again they’ll demonstrate the value of books, baked goods, and the trust of friendship in helping get through tough times.

There are so many things I love about this series—the setting, the way Adams lets her characters’ vulnerabilities come through, the way she recognizes that you are never miraculously free from all of your demons. It’s such a terrific series. I’ll admit I shied away from cozy mysteries for far too long because I thought they’d be too cutesy, but if more are like this, sign me up!!

In The Whispered Word we get to learn more about Nora, Estella, June and Hester, the four women first introduced in The Secret, Book, & Scone Society. The Whispered Word sets the scene right from the start. A new store, which is basically a glorified pawn shop, opens in the town of Miracle Springs. Then a young woman, Abilene, mysteriously appears in Nora's bookstore, burdened with her own secrets. Shortly after Abilene's arrival, a woman is found dead. This is followed by other strange events which draw the attention of Nora and her friends. Together the four of them face danger and threats to their lives as they strive to figure out who's responsible for the nefarious actions going on in Miracle Springs. There are plenty of red herrings and twists in the narrative, all of which kept my attention throughout. Romance and occasional humorous situations provide a break from the women's more serious sleuthing.

This series presents mysteries that are being solved not just by local law enforcement but also by the women of the Secret, Book, & Scone Society who seek solutions on their own. The women in these novels are all strong, resilient, and determined to get to the bottom of things. Their methods of snooping around are unique to their different personalities. Individually they are constantly trying to figure things out but together they are a force to be reckoned with.

I hope that there are many more novels in this series. I look forward to reading more of the adventures of Nora, Estella, June and Hester and the people of Miracle Springs.

Nora owns a bookstore in Miracle Springs, North Carolina. She's part of the Secret, Book and Scone Society, along with Hester, June and Estella.

I read the first book in this series and enjoyed it, but for some reason, I wasn't expecting the emotional ride this one would take me on. I was expecting a solid mystery intertwined with a good story. This book had that, and more.

For one, Abilene's story really moved me, from before and after Nora finds her hiding in her bookstore. But it was the various relationships and what they go through in this book that really got to me. Such as the depth the ladies in the Society share their lives with each other and have each other's backs, learning more about Nora's boyfriend Jedediah's past, and the stories about the people Nora helps with her bibliotherapy "magic", too.

I have plenty of nice things to say about this one, but I'm afraid I'd give too much away if I continue on. This one made me wish I was part of a book club, so I could talk to them about it with them. I'd definitely recommend it as a book club read.

I am very much looking forward to book number three.

The Whispered Word by Ellery Adams was another complex mystery that was also an emotional journey for the reader into a new character's shattered life.

Ms. Adams' descriptive writing welcomed me back into Nora's beautiful world of Miracle Springs, North Carolina. Nora's bookshop is such a blessing for me as I walk into the store and want to stay forever surrounded by the books and Nora's penetrating but loving embrace.

With a mystery surrounding the young woman who has walked into the store, new insights for Nora into her own life, and a mystery that includes two murders and a tightly woven plot, I couldn't put the book down until the conclusion. I do enjoy Nora's friends who also had some new issues to deal with during the story. This book was rich with emotions - humor, grief, anger and love. Ms. Adams has penned another winner in The Whispered Word.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Kensington via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.

I received The Whispered Word (Secret, Book, & Scone Society #2) by Ellery Adams through a Goodreads Giveaway. This is the first book I have read by Ellery Adams and I really enjoyed it. The story line was compelling and I loved all the characters. I want to read the first book in this series.

My only complaint was this book needed a better editor. There were many missing words and grammatical errors, things that don’t usually bother me but there were just too many to ignore.

I received free copies of this book both on netgalley and directly from the author. Thanks to both for the chance to read early!

I knew I was excited to revisit Miracle Springs, but Whispered Word exceeded expectations. Characters both new and old brought intriguing depth to the story. I couldn’t pin down the bad guy right away. Less temptation to bake while reading this one, but the mystery definitely impressed.

The ladies of the Secret, Book, & Scone Society are settling into life in Miracle Springs after the closure of the bank. They are putting together baskets for their less fortunate neighbors, who have lost their jobs and are struggling. But on their first night out they find a body, that of Amanda Frye, one of Nora Pennington's customers at Miracle Books.

The ladies find Amanda floating in a pond near her house. Some think it's a suicide of a woman who had nothing to live for, but Nora and her friends do not. Nora knows things need to be investigated, and she and her friends are very good at finding out secrets.

This is the second book in the Secret, Book, & Scone Society, and it is just as good as the first one. I have to admit though, that the fact the murder victim had my last name was a bit disconcerting at first, but then it made me laugh.

I love the way Ellery Adams weaves a story. She has a way with words that ensnares the readers’ senses and draws them in for a tale that leaves them turning the pages far into the night.

In this second installment, the ladies find a bruised and starving woman hiding in the bookshop. She says her name is Abilene, but Nora knows better. Still, Nora and her friends take the young girl under their wing, and she starts to work at Hester's bakery. But Nora soon begins to think Abilene is somehow involved in Amanda's death.

I love how Ms. Adams wove the bank failure into this book. It made way for entrepreneur Griffin Kingsley to come to town and open Virtual Genie, a cyber business that unloads people’s treasures for cash. But is Kingsley helping residents who are in need of money, or taking advantage of the situation? There is also the arrival of the interim sheriff, Grant McCabe. Will he be willing to accept Nora's help in solving the mystery? And, there is the relationship growing between Nora and paramedic Jed Craig. I loved watching the two of them interact.

One of my favorite parts of this series is the fact that the characters are flawed and realistic. They don't see things through rose-colored glasses, but they work to support each other, even if they don't always see eye-to-eye. They have relationships that I can relate to, and it makes me feel for the characters even more.

The book quotes that Ms. Adams uses to open each chapter are thought-provoking and perfectly selected. They weave into the story seamlessly and provide great insight into the characters and the storyline.

All in all there is nothing I don't like about this series. Impeccably-drawn characters, a tight mystery, and hours of reading enjoyment. What's not to love?

I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

I received a free copy of THE WHISPERED WORD (Book 2 of the Secret, Book, & Scone Society) in exchange for an honest review. Nora Pennington and her friends have not gone anywhere; they don’t have to because the adventures come to them. Miracle Springs is financially reeling from the events of the first book. A lot of residents are out of work or soon will be. When the SBS Society meets to plan a way to help some of those citizens, a mystery waif shows up. They decide to keep her. Shortly thereafter, the SBS Society finds a body, and the mystery girl becomes suspect because she’s determined to keep her secrets. Certainly, the girl seems to be connected to the death, but is she the killer or is she a potential victim? The SBS Society members’ relationships are put to the test as the investigation forces them to confront the heartbreak of their pasts.

I liked this book. I respect how the author kept to the theme of secrets. If you liked THE SECRET, BOOK, & SCONE SOCIETY, you will definitely enjoy this sequel.

Another “could not put it down” novel from Ellery Adams!

I literally finished this book in under 24 hours. I was transported to that village where the outside world disappears. And it is a rather rude awakening there are no more pages to turn. Spellbinding is a good word to describe this book, as I was certainly under its spell

The story picks up right at the end of the previous book in this series, The Secret, Book, and Scone Society. A waif of a young girl appears in Miracle Books, and Nora and her friends help the young girl unlock secrets from her past.

The plot sounds simplistic, but the magic of Mystic Springs comes forth from the book, and the reader is enveloped in a blanket of calmness. It is very hard to put the aura of the book into words. Just trust and believe me when I say there is a seriously great and talented author here.

The books do not have to be read in order, so scoop this one up right away!

Listened for Fun (Audible Purchase)
Overall Rating: 4.25
Story Rating: 4.00
Character Rating: 4.50

Audio Rating: 4.50 (not part of the overall rating)

Why I purchased this: The Whispered Word is a bookclub read for Feb and I love Ellery Adams. She wrote two of my favorite cozy mystery series (Charmed Pie Shoppe Mysteries & Books by the Bay Mysteries ) so this was an easy sell. I have not read/listened to the first one but I am going to go back and do that. As always, her books are filled with a solid mystery and even better characters. I like they each have flaws but work through them the same way we do. I also really like Abilene and how the society rallied around her. Overall, a really great listen!

Audio Thoughts: I am a huge fan of Cris Dukehart (I think that comes to as no surprise to anyone) and she again delivered. She brought humanity, individuality, and beauty to each of these characters!
