Fated for Flames

Rate this book
I was born into a lineage of powerful witches, destined for greatness—until my eighteenth birthday when I was betrayed by those I trusted most and sacrificed in a dark ritual.

But death was not the end.

A mysterious voice offered me the opportunity to return and right the staggering wrongs, but this second chance came with a catch.

With nothing left to lose, I seized it.

Now, reborn and fueled by the fires of my past, I am determined to rewrite my fate and exact revenge on them all.

Fated for Flames isn’t all sunshine and rainbows… In fact, there are no rainbows and the only sunshine you’ll see is the megawatt smile from a happy-go-lucky puppy guy (you’ll understand shortly). Expect slow-burn steam and some dark themes. Chili peppers will grow as the series advances.

this was really similar to the blackened blade plot wise, but just that little bit… less enjoyable. i did think it was a promising start to a new series that i’ll definitely be continuing, but i sometimes found the writing a little stilted, and the plot jumped a little. i also wasn’t feeling the chemistry between a couple ppl in her harem, and the ones WITH chemistry didn’t get enough screentime… i don’t know. but still, very addictive and fun!

This book is a poor imitation of The Blackened Blade by Isla Davon. If the Blackened Blade is the "Shakespeare" of reborn romance/fantasy, then Fated Flames is a "Clifford The Big Red Dog" version.

JC Dark didn't bring the readers into her world or her story, instead we looked at everything from the outside, reading and experiencing nothing.

There were A LOT of plot holes in the story; too many blanks where the readers had to draw their own conclusions; the male POV's added nothing to the story; and the plot is being held together by a frayed string and some bubble gum.

The book is listed at 254 pages (kindle version); however, with the font, spacing between lines and 2/3 of each chapter being white space, the book should be listed around 210 pages. The way that the author has chosen to format the ebook rides a fine line between stylistic choice or book stuffing.

Easy quick read. The epitome of telling a story and not showing or describing it for your readers unfortunately. Has potential

Ok first things first. Despite my rating I enjoyed this.

Here’s where the stars fell off:
1. It is tooooo similar to Isla Davon’s Blackened blade. Similar plot, characters, even the whole training montage thing lol. If Ms Author wanted to use the concept, you should allow your creative in a different direction. Nothing is original. Also you should reference Ms Davon

2. The writing is not good.

3. It has potential despite the alarming similarities to the aforementioned book, but it lost major brownie points by not fleshing out some things. & while I liked Evelyn, she felt very flat. Like there was more to her but I just kept getting surface level stuff. This is the same for all the characters actually

4. The end. Not the fact that it ended on a cliffy, I expected that but the revelations at the end. It was not well executed at all

Poor imitation of another writer’s work

Isla Davon wrote an amazing book called The Blackened Blade and this book is a water down version of it. If you want to read a good paranormal reverse harem with time travel and the main character gets to correct past mistakes read The Blackened Blade it’s way way way better!

Boy was this a ride. I was hesitant in the beginning. It was fast paced and I was almost ready to give up after only a few chapters. I wanted more depth more of her maybe mates/harem. But suddenly it didn’t matter. I fell in love with Evelyn. The sheer determination of this girl was actually a breath of fresh air. She was strong powerful and wanted answers, and managed to do it all without being obnoxiously sassy which so many FMCs are in RH.

I loved the slow build of her relationships. They all make sense and each one has a place and not overly unique and OTT. They were interesting and built the trust she had in them over time.

The storyline is different at least to me. I am so very intrigued and need answers to all my questions that seem just out of reach.

LOVED the last few chapters. Love me a good cliffhanger and this was a big one. It left me breathless. I need the second book like yesterday.

I don't know when bothered trying this when every single academy book irks me, unfortunately this one was no different.
The Mc is super immature, the writing beyond repetitive and the whole theme of the book was just so reminiscent of of another book I read recently that it was hard for me to not feel like this was was copy cat. (I'm not saying it is, this one may well have been written first, but I read the other one first and now I can't undo that).

Plot wise, this is extremely similar to The Blackened Blade. There are some differences, but the same gist and similar events take place through the timeline.

It suffered from some of the same issues as TBB too, namely the lack of plot progression and the endless repetition of her schedule as well as a holey plot. It did some things better, like the FMC actually spends time researching wtf is going on and starts down a path to piece it all together. There are also less technical/editing issues in this book and it’s definitely more concise.

On the other hand, the writing felt a little flatter and less rich to me, I wasn’t as immersed or invested in the story. There’s a lot of telling not showing. The characters are kinda flat and felt more juvenile/cartoony at times (and we have another story where the love interests have to give the FMC cheesy nicknames immediately upon meeting her). We don’t really get to know the love interests and it’s not totally clear who is end game. I didn’t find any of the characters to be particularly likeable. I also thought the vampire’s plot line was a bit creepy and noncey especially at the end.

It’ll be interesting to see where the author takes this story. I do appreciate that her time reversal is significantly shorter than TBB- 1 year seems a bit more of a manageable timeline to cover/resolve the events of the story without major time leaps.

Loved it, but didn't love the ending. This really was fantastic, especially for a reverse harem. Eve is a great character who has worked hard to succeed and get ahead of the people who mean to hurt her. She's strategic and logical.

🎶 Remember when we couldn't take the heat? I walked out, I said, "I'm setting you free" 🎶

Born into a lineage of powerful witches, she was destined for greatness. Her future seemed set, a life filled with power and purpose—until her eighteenth birthday, when betrayal shattered everything she knew. Those she trusted most sacrificed her in a dark ritual, tearing away her life and her future.

─── ・ 。゚☆: THOUGHTS*.☽ .*:☆゚. ───

[Chad]

“Want to try again?” he asked, still grinning.

“No, puppy, I don’t.”

“Do you have a nickname for me, little witch?”

“No.”

“Yes, you do. I love it, by the way.”

He’s such a golden retriever boy 🥺 He wakes up so early just to help her train, that’s the kind of boy who’s all about supporting her and making her stronger. And the fact that he gets shy about his feelings and starts giving her noogies when he’s nervous? ADORABLE. He’s lowkey so sweet, but has no clue how to handle his feelings for her. Instead of confronting them, he just shows up, practices with her, and does everything he can to help her — all while treating her like a friend. He’s so pure and awkward, and honestly, it makes him even more lovable.

[Rafe]

“I am Raphael.”

“Raphael,” I repeated softly, testing the name on my tongue.

“I had to put you to sleep before you burned down the entire academy. That’s why Lucien gave you his shirt,” Raphael explained, his voice laced with gentleness.

He’s such a protective angel boy 😇. He just wants to make sure she’s safe and sound, always looking out for her. I love how his artistic side shines through too — he’s got that sensitive, creative vibe that makes him even more endearing. And then, he’s a total lover boy who cares so deeply about her. You can feel the worry in everything he does, especially when he doesn’t understand who could possibly want to use dark magic to weaken her. It’s clear he’s ready to fight anyone who dares come near her with bad intentions. His heart is so big, and all he wants is to keep her safe and loved. 💖

[Lucien]

He’s been such a quiet support for her, helping with the potions and everything, but he definitely keeps his distance in that way, trying not to push her too much. But the moment he saw her in a vulnerable position? Cue the meltdown 😩 He lost his shit because he just wanted to be there for her, to help her, and it was like all his protective instincts kicked in. He’s so on her side, even if he tries to stay calm and collected. The way he cares, it’s just so pure. He doesn’t want to push her boundaries, but when she needs him, you know he’s ready to drop everything and be there for her. He’s totally her silent guardian and just wants to keep her safe and cared for. 🥹💖

[Theo]

“Wake up. You can’t lose consciousness.”

“Theo!” I shook him gently as I repeated his name. But he didn’t respond.

“Do something! He’s dying.”

“He’s gone.”

NO 😭 He can’t be gone! I’m absolutely shattered for her — after everything, he was so nice to her, so kind, and he was trying to make things right this time around. He had been a traitor in that past life, but she was determined to keep his friendship, and he was so loyal to her this time. He was going to tell her everything, and then he died? I can’t! Please tell me he comes back, there’s no way this is the end for him. He was just starting to be the person she needed, and now he’s ripped away, just like that? This has to be a mistake, right? He’s got to come back — it can’t end like this. I'm heartbroken for both of them. 💔 THIS FRIENDSHIP. MAJOR LOSS.

[Ryker]

“I think we might have to add them to our harem,” Chad said. “I wasn’t planning on bringing any more dicks into the mix, but with the angel dude in the picture, we don’t stand a chance, and that grumpy one probably wants her too.”

“I think my wooing is working, although I sometimes choke and end up giving her noogies. I think it might be sending her mixed signals.”

Ugh, he’s such a mood 😩 He just glares at her from a distance, doesn’t say much, and acts like he doesn’t care, but it’s so obvious he’s so into her. He’s that silent protector type, watching from afar, too proud or shy to admit how much he cares. He’s got this cool, distant vibe, but deep down, he’s rooting for her every step of the way, silently supporting her in all the ways that matter. It’s the kind of love that’s hidden beneath all that gruffness, and it’s so frustrating because you know he’s all in for her, but he won’t ever say it out loud. He’s too busy being all mysterious and brooding, but you can feel the loyalty and affection in everything he does for her. The whole "I’m not into witches" thing is just him being stubborn, but we all know what’s up!

[Allster]

“They were desperate. There was an imminent threat, so they agreed on one condition.”

“Only if you offered your blood freely. That was their condition. You had to willingly let me bite you. My venom would not only bind our agreement but also free your abilities.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means…”

“You’re my wife.”

Oh, a hot vampire? 😳 And he’s just chilling in the library, acting all mysterious and broody like he’s waiting for something to happen? So, apparently, they’re married now? Like, WHAT? He was waiting for her to ask if he could bite her? That’s lowkey manipulative and conniving, even though I get it — he’s playing the long game, and now they’re tethered in a way she didn’t expect. I mean, she probably thought it was all going at her pace, but nope, he had his own plans, and now they're stuck in this intense, unexpected connection. It’s like he knew exactly what he was doing the whole time, and now she’s dealing with the consequences of letting him in. It’s a messed up twisted dynamic, and now they’re tied together in a way that’s way deeper than she anticipated. 💀

─── ・ 。゚☆: OVERALL*.☽ .*:☆゚. ───

Theo's death 😩 I didn’t see that coming at all, and it’s so tragic because she genuinely thought she could fix things between them in this lifetime. She had this hope that she could make things right, but now she’s left with this grief, knowing she couldn’t save him this time. Fate had other plans for them.

This book was written like they had a word minimum to hit, but didn’t want to add any new info or plot in order to do so. Constantly saying the same thing in slightly different words over and over. Over explaining simple concepts and adding superfluous adjectives.

The writing quality a few pages in feels like that of an average freshman in high school. Oh hey the dialogue too!
Chapters that average 4 pages?
Very awkward phrasing.

Ok DNF at page 25, honestly mad because I’m sick of these AI esque books. I will read garbage, I love reading garbage! Put some goddamn effort into it at least.

There was no chemistry between the FMC and any od the harem, there isn’t very clear who ans how many they are… ir also felt just like a description of the FMC days… some things happens and you don’t know how.
Very poorly written…i think the author could work better on that aspect…

Also really really similar to blackned blade

Holy crap Fated for Flames was so freaking good! Evelyn is such an amazing character. Before "the event (the event being, that she was betrayed by her coven) she was content being meek. After the event, Evelyn opened her eyes. She's paying attention, has strong determination, and a will to fight back, taking the steps to improve herself and to get to the truth. I loved her evolution throughout this book.

Is this a reverse harem? Even now, after finishing, I'm still not 100% sure. This is a this is an iceberg burn, nothing has happened besides a few kisses so there's no way sure way to tell. I'm really hoping it is because there is a gang of guys that I like a lot and I don't want her to choose.

The plot was fantastic. JC Dark captured my attention from the first moment with dark magic, betrayal, mysteries, action, and a strong MFC. Dark jumped right in with the dark magic, usually, authors don't go into detail but Dark had a different perspective, it was interesting seeing this side of magic since it isn't used in detail as much. The story came together really well. Dark is already revealing certain connections but if these are the connections that are already being revealed what are the connections we aren't seeing?

I can't believe all that's happened and Fated for Flames is just the first book. The story ends on a cliffhanger that has me asking a million and one questions. I'm so looking forward to the next book. If you're looking for a great dark academia that is filled with suspense, and centers on the paranormal then I highly suggest Fated for Flames.

I think this book had a lot of potential. I had a hard time connecting with the characters. Their relationships are very underdeveloped. Also, what's with all the time skips? In all the time that passes, the author could've spent time putting more detail into the relationships. It just felt cold.

I understand that this is a debut novel of a new author. Please don't give up. Your idea is great. Please just refine it more.

Spoilers!

Alright I rated this a three because the pacing and main characters repetition of her being so different now that she's come back to life. The internal pep talks and rephrasing of herself got old. The pacing piece is more of a personal preference of books but it felt we got the same information over and over again and we don't get a ton more information throughout the book that we didn't start with. We know the bad guys and that they have bad magic. But we don't have much else confirmed by the end of this book.

Another issue I have is that I feel the audience for this book isn't clear. She's 17, and we have a harem and at the end she's married? It feels ya because absolutely nothing happens with the guys in her life aside from kissing and then she's married? I wish she was aged up but I'm assuming her age will be a factor because of the guardianship and the maturity of her powers by the equinox and thus why her coven was sacrificing her.

I liked what I see of the guys so far but I'm hoping we actually get to know them over this series. We don't really get long chapters from them and it's too short to really get to know their individual personalities so I am holding out hope we get more.

Was really hopeful as it's similar to The Blackened Blade but the author left no room for the story or characters to breathe. Just moving from thing to thing non-stop. It seemed as if every few pages it moved to something else. "I woke up, now I went back to the academy, then I change my classes, now I'm in the class, now I'm having extra time to make up things in class, now I'm in potions, now I'm asking about a potion..." It was like the author got those bullet points and didn't want to build the story or characters to fill in the gaps to make it flow and enrich the world. Real shame as I was excited to start it but had to stop 20% in.

DNF @ 14% - I really couldn’t get into this one and I tried. The way the story was written, was not very immersive or made me care about the characters. It was very much telling - instead of showing and explaining.

I only have two problems

1 I have a heavy dislike for VCard FMCs. Although this is slightly more bearable because she wasn’t in her first life and because the males aren’t running around with ow the whole time like all the other PNR books.
2 the lack of MMC POVs just hurts. I pre downloaded the second book to see if they got more there but nope.
Loved the book tho and I plan on continuing the series just wanted to give out my personal irks 😂

I know people say not to judge a book by their covers, however I never say that. This cover is absolutely gorgeous and drew me in the minute I laid my eyes on it. It's stunning.

The beginning does have a bit of a slower start to it, but as the storyline progresses it picks up. I also love how the chapters are shorter. Once you get through the first few chapters the story is very fast paced, it's written very well. I adore some of the character names, I love when there is a variety and not the typical book names.

Main character Evelyn, is such a powerhouse. Throughout this read she shows how much strength, determination and willpower she has. Not someone waiting for someone else to save the day, willing to put in work herself.

This book does end on a cliffhanger and leaves you wanting more of the storyline. I definitely recommend this read!

I love discovering new authors and this is why! Loved this story, it took a little while to get going but once it did- it was fast paced with plenty of action, drama and tension. Love the main character, Evelyn, her strength and grace is everything. I also liked that the fresh take of this book, not read anything like this in a long time and I’m totally invested. The characters could do with a bit more depth but hoping this improves as the series progresses but otherwise this was a strong debut

The plot was interesting. I didn’t find it as similar to The Blackened Blade as other people did. There is one component that is similar, the situation with Lia, and that’s it and it wasn’t a unique plot point in BB either.

The execution was the issue with this one. It’s so much telling verses showing. The author needed to hone her craft more before releasing this book. It’s missing a lot of development and emotion. The dual POVs all read the exact same as well.

Overall: 2.5 and I will try book two since these are short and I am interested in the plot. It’s basically like reading a wattpad or a pay per chapter story.

This book was a ride! Starting off with an unexpected twist, following as Evelyn becomes a much stronger version of her old self. Bringing in a loveable “puppy” like shifter, a grumpy potion master, a gorgeous angel-hybrid, a mysterious shifter and an intriguing vampire.. This book couldn’t offer more on the sexy supernatural men side of things! This book drew me in from the beginning, bringing quite a bit of shock as we start to learn the truth. Extremely excited for book 2 to continue this journey with Evelyn!

This book sucked me in, I was hooked from the very beginning. I love all of the characters and I can't wait to find out what happens in book 2. All I have to say is...that cliffhanger......it about killed me. I wanted to rage soo bad. This was such an amazing book and I completely devoured it within 2 days. I definitely recommend this book to everyone, just fair warning of the cliffhanger...it's a steep one.

***FAST PACED***

I'm really enjoying the second chance in life trope with sweet revenge in mind! That is the main plot of this story. The fmc was betrayed by the people closest and dearest to her and ended up tortured and sacrificed. The twist she came back exactly a year before it all went down, and she is determined to change her fate and dole out some payback to the people who betrayed her. It's an awesome premise, but I think it was rushed.

This was an absolutely fantastic, enthralling first installment of a series. It us well paced, full of mystery, intrigue, angst heartache and a dash of romance. I was hooked from chapter one and stayed up half the night tonread it in one sitting as I could not put it down! I was absolutely not prepared for those last few chapters!!

ok

I wanted to like this more than I did, considering I’ve heard lots of good things. But…. I struggled. The plot is interesting, but it’s a bit too much like the Blackend Blade to ignore. I also had a hard time connecting with Evelyn - it’s a bit flat to me. Regardless, it is well loved by many, so there’s that.

2.75* This book is written in such an immature manner, making it hard to follow. It felt like a VERY rough draft, missing details, things feeling like they were just thrown in there, no real building in any way, whether it be plot, world, or characters. It also felt for a bit like I was reading a knockoff Blackened Blade.
