Game of Thrones meets The Name of the Wind in this exuberant, character-driven epic fantasy.

Every year, prophecy leaves fall from the Yubriy Tree. And every year, the Dayborn king sends his most trusted servants to collect the leaves and return them to the capital.

Only this year, one of the leaves drifted into the forest unseen.

Three lives will be forever changed by the undetected prophecy leaf.

The strong-willed daughter of a powerful family. The mysterious and reviled half brother of the king. And a talented but unlucky musician, desperate to write the song that will bring him good fortune.

Firstly I was drawn to this book by the artwork and the title. When I saw that it was inspired by game of thrones I was absolutely sold.

The book centers around three main characters who are all equally different but then slowly become intertwined to fulfil a prophecy. I liked the multiple POVs and I felt like it made the book flow very nicely. I’m not always a fan of multiple POVs as I feel you can sometimes lose the essence of the book, but this didn’t happen with this book.

I loved the lore and this book definitely did well to world build and fully immerse me in to this unique fantasy world.

It was super easy to read and follow the premise of the story line. I think it was a strong opening to a fantasy series because it was so well written with a detailed plot and clear expectations of what was to happen.

While the notion of it being similar to game of thrones drew me in, I definitely felt it wasn’t a book trying to dress up as another. It was unique in its own way and I will definitely continue to read this series.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book masterfully combines the best aspects of “Game of Thrones” with the charm of “The Name of the Wind”, offering a well-crafted plot and an immersive magical world.

The use of multiple character perspectives works perfectly, drawing readers deeper into the lives of the three main protagonists, who quickly became favorites of mine (I especially loved Gregor!).

The beautiful cover and intriguing title perfectly complement the story inside making it a great cozy read, perfect for the autumn season.

A solid 4-star experience for any fantasy lover!

Thank you so much to the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book!

The title and the beautiful cover of this book intrigued me, when I first saw it on NetGalley. The blurb then goes on to say this is some 'Game of Thrones meets Name of The Wind' kind of story. SAY LESS.

But did it live up to my then skyrocketing expectations?

It definetly has the potential to be great. I really, really liked all three characters we get to follow along. The trippy sagekind, the insecure lutist, the rebellious lesser twin. They all felt unique and interesting. The world building was nicely done, even though it could have been a bit more vivid. The writing was easy to get into, even though we are presented with a new high fantasy world and there are many mysteries from the beginning.

The inspiration from books like Game Of Thrones and The Name Of The Wind are definetly visible, but not in a plagiarizing way.

So in theory, everything is there and I had a really good time reading it. But in the end it fell short in comparison to the aforementioned. It just didn't make me ✨feel things✨ as much. And I think we could have gotten a bit more explanations of the mysteries of this new world to keep us hooked.

But I hope to see more of that in the next part. Definetly going to read it and definetly curious how the story will proceed!

Thanks to NetGalley and Knock-Knee Books for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The book stars really strong. Really love the chapter about the Yubriy tree and their prophecies. But I did not connect of all the journeys of the characters. Especialy did not like very much Gregory chapters. But did like very much Joanna chapters, her quest with Easton to find the dragon and her wild nature made her my favorite character. Also did love Silas and his dream to be the best musician. I just thought the parts around the king and his family a little bored. The only prince that I love was Easton. He is adventurous and romantic.
In general is a good first book of an series. I hope in the next we know more about the prophecey and what will happy to Joanna know that she discover her real orign.

I know for many people, the idea of this book being similar to Game of Thrones was the appeal. However, I think Spencer is able to do what Martin couldn't: write a great series that doesn't focus on the pain of women. This book has amazing lore, three POVs that are all interesting, a prophecy that needs to be met, and an high fantasy setting that feels like being in Middle Earth.

This book is amazing, and I need a physical copy for my library ASAP.

Reading The Prophecy of the Yubriy Tree was such a fun experience! It perfectly satisfied my craving for a well-written fantasy.

A tree with leaves that hold prophecies?! I was hooked from the very beginning and couldn’t wait to learn more. The author’s ability to weave together lore, politics, and everyday life to create such a rich, immersive world was masterfully done.

The story follows three characters: Johanna, Silas, and Gregor. And each of their perspectives pulls the reader deeper into the world and its magic, making it easy to get immersed. It also does a great job of filling in the gaps in each POV. It is done very very well. And the way they slowly started meeting each other, I screeched. I never suspected it until it was happening on the page.

One of the highlights for me was the tension surrounding religion—who follows the “right” practices, and the conflict between beliefs. It felt so realistic and added a lot of depth, allowing me to easily understand the mindset and backgrounds of each character.

On top of that, the added tension between the royal family and a brewing rebellion had me on the edge of my seat the entire time!

Silas is my favorite character. Unlike Johanna and Gregor, he doesn’t have royal ties and is navigating the world as a storyteller, someone who wants to turn stories into song. His adventures alongside a character named Wyn were so fun to follow and easily some of my favorite moments.

Johanna is a fascinating character, dealing with the consequences of being the “lesser twin.” Her journey was so compelling that I couldn’t help but root for her the whole way through.

And then there’s Gregor—so clever! I loved reading about how he manipulates people’s religious superstitions and fears to his advantage. He is just so smart. And the ability to navigate through the tension so well… wow! If I was in this world, I would want to be on his good side haha Also the ability to see skulls is so creepy and not anything I’ve ever read and it was genius. I am obsessed!

This was a fantastic read, and it’s definitely going to stay with me for a while. Excited for the next book in the series.

Wow, what an adventure! This is just the beginning of what looks to be an absolutely epic series full of colourful characters, political intrigue, secrets, lies and betrayals. The scene has been well and truly set for some fabulous reading ahead.

We follow 4 POVs in the land of Ragar Or, a continent with a ruling kingdom warring with some of its territories, two religions, a tree whose leaves show prophecies of the future, an interesting kind of elemental magic and dragons that are called from the sky. What could go wrong?!

I really enjoyed this fast-paced story. The characters are absolutely excellent and are uniquely different from each other. The world building is sharp but thorough and never a slog to get through. The names are a little tricky to follow at times due to the number of characters and places to wrap one’s head around; I think a glossary would be helpful if able to be added without giving away any of the story. The ending was a little abrupt which is to be expected when reading a series, but the little epilogues just dangled that carrot of the next book.

I’m all in! I want to know what happens after this excellent series opener. Thank you to the author and BookSirens for an ARC of this gripping story!

Book Review: The Prophecy of the Yubriy Tree by Ben Spencer

Ben Spencer’s The Prophecy of the Yubriy Tree is a masterful high fantasy debut that conjures a world as rich in political intrigue as it is in poetic beauty. Seamlessly blending layered storytelling, lyrical prose, and emotionally resonant character arcs, Spencer crafts a tale that feels both timeless and refreshingly original.

The story unfolds in the realm of Ragar Or, where each autumn, golden leaves fall from the mythic Yubriy Tree—each inscribed with a prophecy. When one such leaf is lost to history, its absence sets off a series of events that ripple through kingdoms. The narrative follows three primary characters—Johanna, a bold and politically astute noblewoman; Silas, a musician with a mysterious past; and Gregor, the king’s exiled half-brother, whose presence injects the narrative with moral complexity and simmering tension. Their arcs interweave to form a tapestry of ambition, betrayal, and awakening destiny.

Spencer’s prose is elegant without being overwrought, striking a balance that elevates both action and introspection. His world-building is subtle yet immersive—religions, histories, and social tensions emerge naturally through dialogue and character perspective rather than exposition dumps. And while dragons are whispered to be myth, a looming sense of the arcane haunts every page.

What truly distinguishes this novel is its emotional intelligence. Relationships evolve organically, from rivalries to fragile alliances to a slow-burn romance that complements rather than overtakes the central plot. The theme of prophecy is handled with refreshing nuance—less as a binding fate, more as a challenge to agency and belief.

If the novel has any shortcomings, they are minor: a few pacing lulls in the middle and some threads left intentionally unresolved to set the stage for future installments. But these are the marks of a saga just beginning to unfold, and the promise of what’s to come is undeniable.

In sum, The Prophecy of the Yubriy Tree is a captivating and ambitious start to a series that feels destined for greatness. With echoes of A Song of Ice and Fire and The Name of the Wind, yet entirely its own voice, this is a must-read for fans of immersive fantasy, political drama, and poetic storytelling.

Verdict: ★★★★★
Elegant, immersive, and emotionally rich—a fantasy debut that deserves a place on every reader’s shelf.

The Prophecy of the Yubriy Tree (The Song of the Burning Heart Book 1) by Ben Spencer. Publishing date: 19th October 2024. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I picked this book as the title intrigued me and I am so glad I did as it was fantastic!

The book centres around three main characters - Johanna Salk who is the lesser twin daughter of the Lord of a great house. Silas O’ the Songs who is a young lutist who longs to write and play his own original songs for a grand audience, and Gregor Thorn the bastard half brother (or is he??) of King Micah Dayborn. The Yubiry Tree and its prophetic leaves peaked my interest and I really enjoyed the ceremonial elements to its protection and gathering of the leaves.

The multiple character POV works really well in this book and fans of character driven fantasy will not be disappointed. I felt that was beginning to understand who the characters are by the end of the book (except Wyn who I cannot wait to find out more about!), yet wanting to know more of each characters back story as I went along.

The trio start on separate paths and we meet side characters on the way who are just as interesting as the main characters such as Easton Dayborn, Wyn Dunkin, and Madrig & Jacy (who I instantly loved). There are also tales of dragons of old and a dragon resurgent in the lands.

Ben Spencer has weaved together elements of a number of my favourite high fantasy books and come up with a brilliant story of his own. I couldn’t put it down. It has a rich but easy to follow plot with politics, magic, a little romance, and it’s full of interesting and intriguing characters which left me wanting more.

I honestly can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

I received this book as an arc read and my review is my own personal view of the book.

I really wanted to like this book, it had so much for me to like. It is an epic fantasy that follows multiple characters, a magical old tree and dragons. Unfortunately the execution just wasn't for me.

I don't really feel like I got to know our three main characters, they just felt to flat I knew one or two aspects about their personality and ambitions and that was basically it.

The plot felt quite underwhelming which obviously wasn't the point and the pacing just felt really disjointed.

The best way to describe my reading experience is that I felt a lot like I was reading a book in physical way of it. I wasn't immersed in it.

The cover for this book is absolutely GORGEOUS, which is what caught my attention first. Then I read the description and knew it would be a book I would enjoy. Which I did, very much. I'm a huge fan of the multiple POVs so you can get different perspectives and know what each character is thinking. I love the world this author has built, everything was amazing and the characters were fantastically written. I couldn't get enough and I can't wait to see what happens next. Ben Spencer is an author I will have to read more works of (well, at least add them to my ever growing TBR pile).

The characters in this book are top notch. I enjoyed them all and each was unique. I really liked Easton and Johanna’s story line. I definitely want more of their story. And Greta she has more to say for sure. World building was well done and immersive. There are several points of view but it was always clear whose story you were reading and they all flowed together nicely!
I definitely recommend to readers who enjoy a character driven fantasy story.

Damn. This was amazing. I loved that you can tell this was inspired by Game of Thrones, but the author did a brilliant job making it their own. The world was so rich. The stories so engaging. And so many times I found myself pleasantly surprised. For example, I would be sad of a particular character’s death (and the fact they had me sad within only one chapter) to kicking my feet with excitement for the outcome that followed.
I am constantly in search of another high fantasy story that captures what George RR Martin created. One that has a deep world, court politics, an engaging plot, and most important of all, interesting characters. And this checked every box. I cannot recommend this book enough. I’m so mad I now have to wait for the rest of the series to come out cause I need to know what happens next.

The cover pulled me in but the story kept me reading.

This was the first book of an epic fantasy that follows three different characters and their journeys.

(I couldn’t stop imagining Ajax cleaner when I read the name Ajax. That is all.)

If you enjoyed Priory of the Orange Tree, I think you will enjoy this.

If you like fantasies about dragons that is written well, you will enjoy this.

If you just enjoy a good fantasy, give this book a try.

The Prophecy of the Yubriy Tree will be released on October 19, 2024.

Thank you, NetGalley, for this eARC in exchange for a review.

I enjoyed reading this book well enough and look forward to the series being continued. I think this was a solid start at beginning the worldbuilding for more books but often found myself feeling like nothing was really happening. For about 75% of the book I felt like everyone was pretty much in the same place in the plotline that they started. The characters were interesting and fun and made this issue negligible. I was especially appreciative of Johanna as a female character who's personality isn't just 'I'm not like the other girls, I wear pants!' which feels painfully common in high fantasy these days. Overall I really look forward to being able to continue reading this as a series.

The Prophesy of the Yubriy Tree is written from the point of view of three main characters: Johanna Salk, Silas O’ the Songs, and Gregor Thorn. I was skeptical when a third character was introduced but my curiosity had already been snagged. I needed to know what happened next to Johanna and that kept me reading.

It didn’t take me long to realize the use of multiple viewpoints is very well done by utilizing characters with vastly different personalities, backgrounds, and locations. I spent a lot of time trying to puzzle out Silas’ connection to the other two characters in the story and was not disappointed when he finally crosses paths with one of our other two characters. There’s a bit of everything in this book. Intrigue, danger, romance (PG), and humor.

I’m glad this is the beginning of a series because I was not ready to be done with the story when I got to the end of the book.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Which means I have even longer to wait for the second book than the rest of you!

**Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest feedback. Thank you NetGalley and Knock Knee Books!**

I really loved this book. The very first chapter captured my attention and the book didn’t let go until the last page. The first chapter details the process of collecting the Yubriy leaves and it follows the journey of the three leaves that get carried away. Then we jump straight into meeting our main three characters, around whom I presumed that the lost prophecies would revolve. It was a perfect introduction into the story.

So because we have these three main characters that means we have three ongoing narratives that revolve around different aspects of this world. Johanna is the daughter of a high lord whom the king is asking for assistance in squashing a rebellion. She was amazing. I loved her character, her story and her spunk. The first time we’re introduced to her was unforgettable and I loved her for every page after. Silas is a musician who desperately wants to get a patronage somewhere, but he gets caught up with an unexpected ally while running from soldiers who are trying to murder them. He was a little harder to enjoy, he’s a sullen musician after all. But eventually he warmed my heart too, and his story turned out to be incredibly important to events that happen later in the book. And Gregor, the bastard half brother of the king who acts as his counsel and his sage. Gregor’s story was probably the most compelling of the bunch. He introduces us to so many beautiful and important parts of the story.

I couldn’t get enough of this book. I dreamed about it a few times, trying to work out how it would end and what the missing prophecies were. The world was wonderfully crafted. The characters were realistic and likeable. The magic of this world was fascinating and unique. I just loved it. This is definitely a series I will be following.

The Prophecy of the Yubriy Tree (The Song of the Burning Heart, Book 1) by Ben Spencer Review

The first sentence in the description if this book stated “Game of Thrones meets The Name of the Wind” and I couldn’t agree more. The world building was subtle, just enough to know your surroundings and locations, which was perfect as the story is truly character-driven.

Once a year, the Yubriy tree sheds its leaves. But each leaf of the Yubriy tree holds a prophecy. That is why the king sends his most trusted to collect the leaves and brings them back to the capital. Every leaf is to be collected, but what happens when was drifts off unseen?

This story centers around Johanna Stalk, a lesser twin of nobility, Gregor Thorn, the king’s half-brother with mysterious abilities, and a bard, Silas O’ The Songs, looking to become a renown musician. This novel takes you through the lives and thoughts of these three characters to see how their lives will play out as told by the Yubrity leaves... all while a dragon has returned to the land in over sixty-five years, presenting a dark omen to nobility.

This novel was so hard to put down. I needed to know what was going to happen next! Each chapter is a different character’s perspective, which was enjoyable and I often found myself looking forward to each characters next chapter to see how their story was progressing. It’s not over descriptive in violent scenes and one explicit sex scene. I highly recommend this novel, in fact, I already have. I keep telling my husband that he is going to LOVE this book and am very excited to get others to read it as well. I can’t wait for the next book to come out! If you’re a fantasy fan, this is a novel you definitely want to read.

This was an ARC I received through Netgalley.

I really enjoyed taking my time with this read. We follow three characters who slowly start to cross paths throughout this high fantasy. As the prophecy starts the unfold the characters have to face many challenges and obstacles. Personally, I enjoy Silas’ POV the most. I don’t know why by his character was always so fun to read from, there was always something going on with him. I found all three POVs to be enjoyable to read from, I was excited to read from each one. The pacing was great, I wasn’t bored at all and I thought the length was perfect.

There’s so much politicking, scheming, and fighting in this there’s no way to ever be bored while reading. The little bit of romance we got was so good and I couldn’t wait for the next scrap of it during their POV! I really did enjoy this read and loved that I took my time reading through this. I cannot wait for the next book (I hope we get more dragons in it). I think this will be a great series and I definitely recommend checking it out.

Final rating: 4 stars ✨

Thank you to NetGalley and author Ben Spencer for the opportunity to read the ARC, I loved it!

Often compared to Game of Thrones, The Prophecy of the Yubriy Tree delivers the same addictive mix of political intrigue, complex characters, and epic stakes, but with a much smoother reading experience. Where Thrones can feel like wading through a medieval encyclopedia (or the fantasy version of the Old Testament), this book keeps things tight, engaging, and refreshingly readable.

The magic system is both imaginative and integral to the world’s power dynamics. It enhances the story rather than weighing it down with lore dumps.

The characters are sharp and endlessly compelling. Loyalties shift, secrets unravel, and no one is safe, which keeps the tension high and the pages turning fast.

If you love high fantasy but prefer storytelling that doesn’t get lost in its own footnotes, The Prophecy of the Yubriy Tree is a thrilling, satisfying read that gets all the big things right.

I can’t wait for the next installment.

This book is the start of an epic fantasy. It reminded me a bit of the Priory of the Orange Tree in the sense that it follows 3 strangers who are slowly woven together to fulfil a prophecy. Silas is the luteist with the song that powerful men are trying to ensure doesn’t get heard. Gregor is the kings half brother and mage, keeping a promise to his father to ensure the safety of the king even to his own detriment. And Joanna is the barbarian princess, seeking freedom through a bargain with a prince.
This was a well written book - similar to the Priory of the Orange Tree, it is steady to set its scene but then ensures you in the story as the players journeys (fates?) start to become clear.
And don’t forget the dragons!
Recommended for those who enjoy epic fantasy.

I'm so happy I picked up this book. It was everything I needed and more.

The story is told from 3 POVs: Gregor, Silas and Johanna. The latter is the daughter of Duke Salk, Gregor is the brother to the king and is able to wield magic and Silas is a flutist/song maker.

Over the course of the story we see how they are connected and how everything is tied to the prophecies written on the leafs of the Yubriy tree.

The characters ate well written, the history of the world is fascinating and the story is easy to follow.

There's a bit of romance, but perfectly balanced with the story and all clean.

Looking forward to the next book in this series.

4.4 Stars for the Sagekind & the Jeyedoshi ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wow. What an amazing ride. The multiple story-lines approach threw me a bit at first, but almost all came together beautifully in the end, leaving a few strands hinted at but not revealed yet.

The world building is great, the characters are morally grey and never dull nor black and white. There is such an array of different beings, never a dull moment to be had. If you like epic stories with multiple layers, this one is for you! I for one can’t wait for the sequel.

Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book is well written and has a very interesting premise. I love all of the characters that we are introduced to and I am excited to see what happens next.

My one complaint would be that this book is a lot of setup for future books with very little plot of its own, but it helps that the POV characters are likable and interesting so I didn't notice until the end when I realized that almost all of the plot lines are left open.

I am excited to see where this series goes now that some of the setup is out of the way.

Ben Spencer has a way of crafting fantastical worlds that have just enough trappings of the familiar to pull us in, but are rich and fresh with his unique imagination. In The Prophecy of the Yubriy Tree, Ben spins an epic that feels partly like a Game of Thrones-inspired thriller of subterfuge and partly like a quasi-feudal/colonial adventure that brings a diverse cast of characters clashing together.

The world of the Yubriy Tree is one of ancient magick. It's one of deep roots, and there's a sense of untapped history that Bem Spencer slowly unfurls as we read along.

I can't wait to read the next entry in this series.

The Prophecy of the Yubriy Tree, marketed as Game of Thrones meets The Name of the Wind definitely peeked my interest and it didn't let me down.

The story is told from the point-of-view of 3 different characters and while I don't always love that method of story telling it worked well here. I enjoyed them all but found myself waiting for the chapters from Johanna's pov.

It's a well-written, interesting story and I will continue to read the series as it unfolds.

A character driven, multiple POV fantasy that has a great story line. The characters are so well developed in this book that the reader is drawn into the entire story and its easy to relate as the different characters make choices and go on their respective journeys.

Beautifully written and a great book to enjoy.
