Steven Zheng is an ice miner on the desolate moon of Ganymede, where he ekes out just enough of a living to get by in the colony’s underground warrens. He gets the break of a lifetime when a UN job placement program selects him for relocation to Valbara – a lush paradise planet where he can breathe fresh air, drink clean water, and walk outside without a pressure suit. When he arrives, he quickly realizes that the alien culture will take some getting used to. The locals are diminutive reptilian creatures with strange social behaviors, and with females outnumbering males by a factor of seven to one, he finds himself the unwitting focus of attention in the workplace. Valbaran office politics may be just as difficult to navigate as the subsurface tunnels back home.
So this would be my second book that I read by "Snek Guy" my first being "Queen of Jarilo" and, seeing that I like Lizard girls, i wanted to check this one out as it looked a lot less violent than the previous one I read, and well, yeah it certainly was.
This story is about a guy who works on an ice mining colony in space. Wins a job lottery and gets shipped off to a beach/jungle/forest planet where short lizard people live. He gets sent there to essentially be their secretary. on this planet the females outnumber the men about 7 to 1 so females form groups that essentially work as a democratic unit and all share a guy.
The girls he work with all pretty much immediately fall for this main guy and he has to try to play hard to get to make sure they see him as a long term partner instead of a fling.
So was this story good? Well, not really? but let me explain. So first and foremost, Snek guy is really good at explaining aliens and worlds. They have very good detail about how the buildings look, how the world looks, how the creatures look, how they function, what they eat, etc. In terms of world building they're VERY precise and detailed, which i can appreciate. I actually felt like this was a living breathing world and i liked it.
What i DIDN'T really enjoy was some of the storytelling. The girls immediately liking him was, I think, a little rushed. Yes during the story he helps them win a big contract, but overall, i felt as if the romance was a bit fast and i would have liked to have seen some infighting between the members of the 5 lady group. There was one tsundere yes, but i think a straight up girl not liking him would have been a nice change of pace. Or perhaps he starts out hating the group. Like some kind of conflict. I just felt like this romance fell into place way too easily.
Also, towards the end, the plot kind of falls apart. Once the major issue of the book happens, the rest of the story is just sex. like, literally the last 20% is just sex. Yes there's five girls in the group, but man, it was a lot to schlog through. Here and there is fine, but when it's the last 100 pages with no break, it gets a little tedious. I would have preferred it peppered in rather than one giant sex fest for the entire last 100 pages.
The girls are all unique enough and it was easy enough to know the difference between them, but realistically, there should have been more differing opinions on the MC rather than the 4 out of 5 immediate love.
I will say i was a big disappointed at the ending. I thought he was going to bring his buddy Feng to the planet, like, recommend him for a position of something but, *light spoiler* that doesn't happen.
That being said, it was still a fine story. The story wasn't nearly as good as Jarilo, but it was fine in its own right. I have more Snek guy books in my backlog and want to see more. i really appreciate them writing these kind of stories as trying to find male human x female alien/anthro/etc can be rough to find and they're some of my favorites.
At the end of the day. Cute, not bad, and good world building and characterization. 3.5 out of 5 rounded up to a 4.
So overall I liked the book. Was it perfect? No... but there were a lot of new concepts, a lot of work was put into different culture and physiology.
Is there a lot of hand waving? Oh dear gods yes... Take any realism dealing with gravity differences like The Expanse and chuck it right out of your head, it's somehow dealt with so it doesn't come up.
It's a slow burn, until out finally isn't and the smut is all packed in to a few chapters. It was certainly.. interesting.
Will I get another? Honestly it feels more like KU stuff for me, so I won't continue with the series. Was nice for what it was but resolves at a point where I can see the MC off into the sunset. But feel free to give it a try, and I might try other of the author's work.
