The Brigadier enlists the Doctor’s help in solving a mystery on an oil rig that they might prefer to forget… before the TARDIS crew travel back in time to Egypt and one of the most memorable romances in history.
14.6 Conspiracy of Silence by Jonathan Morris - Something happened to the oil rig. Something so swift and unexpected that the one hundred and fifty people aboard couldn’t summon help. Everyone who has tried to investigate has disappeared. So now the Brigadier is sending the Doctor and Leela. But is there anything to find there? Or is there nothing to be found there? No-one on board... but the Silence.
14.7 The Last Queen of the Nile by David K Barnes - The TARDIS lands a few miles from Alexandria in Egypt, where the Doctor, Leela and K9 encounter Mark Antony, returning from a military campaign. As he joins Cleopatra, they realise they are about to witness one of the most famous romances in history. But this romance threatens the power of Rome, where the ambitious Octavian Caesar is attempting to convince the Senate to declare war on the Queen of the Nile. A tragedy of Shakespearean proportions is about to unfold - and the time travellers are trapped in the middle.

once more a Big Finish production with my favorite classic Doctor played by the vocally still very impressive Tom Baker. This actor introduced me originally to the TV show called Doctor Who and it has become aclife long enjoyment. So much that when the show returned to television I took time to explain it to my daughters and showed it to them. One of them enjoys the show the other one is seriously into Star Wars. Each her own I think.
this boxset consists of two stories one being: "the conspiracy of the Silence" in which in two episodes the Doctor meets the Silence on a oil platform and they want the Doctor. The first episodes tells the story and the second one fills in the gaps in the story. Quite something different but it somehow works. But I have to say that the Silence works better visually in the Matt Smith series.
Then there is the serial by which name the boxset goes: "The last queen of the Nile". Which is where the Doctor, Leela and K9 get caught up in the final days of Cleopatra, Mark-Antony and the battle for the Roman Empire. When our merry time-traveling band land in Egypt they meet Mark-Anthony who is used to getting his way. Takes K9as a gift for Cleopatra and the Doctor and Leela along. Leela falls in the old trap of not getting caught in Time because of personal sympathies and K9 is considered as an Oracle as hé knows future events which leads to trouble. Through the eyes of our time-traveling friend we get to re-live the last months of the great love affair of Cleopatra and her Marc-Anthony and the fall of the last dynasty of Egyptian Pharaos. It is done in a very entertaining way and shows how well historical stories in the Whoverse can be done. A very enjoyable Who-tale with a briĺliant Tom Baker still voicing his brilliant Doctor. Louise Jameson also reprises her role from the TV show as does John Leeson as K9.
Well worth your listening time if you are into Doctor Who and nobody Does it better than Big Finish.
It’s finally time to complete this year's series of 4th Doctor adventures. I’ve been really excited for this set 4, and The Silence is a match made in heaven.
Conspiracy of Silence: The Brigadier invites the Doctor, Leela and K9 back to Earth after an oil rig has been the centre of mysterious disappearances. Something evil lurks on the rig, and it’s from The Doctor’s future.
Jonathan Morris wrote a very atmospheric, creepy, and experimental script where memory is unreliable. This was a strong story for K9 in particular, that deals with the consequences of The Impossible Astronaut 2-parter. 9/10
The Last Queen of the Nile: The Doctor, Leela and K9 arrive at the start of Egypt’s downfall. Mark Antony takes K9 as a present to Coleoptera, but unbeknownst to him, he has angered the people of Rome, and they’re coming for him. A war’s about to start, and it’s going to hurt.
David K. Barnes has written an incredible pure historical that has a great cast of guest characters and manages to do really interesting things with all three regulars. A dark, brutal historical that will break your heart. 10/10
I'm afraid I can't remember the first story, but from what K9 tells me, it was rather good
The Last Queen of the Nile was the story jumping out to me. It more than delivered! A rare pure historical for the Fourth Doctor with Leela and K9. This story covers Cleopatra and Mark Anthony's romance, which ultimately leads to tragedy for them. It's very clever how writer David K Barnes writes the Doctor, Leela, and especially K9 into the historical events. It's also a thematical sequel to the Wraith of the Iceni, which had 4 and Leela meet Boudicca. Another very strong story.
Overall, it is a great boxset of audio dramas that continues to prove that you can't run out of stories despite the huge number already made for Tom Baker.
This is why we don't get involved when we know how the story ends.
Based on the authors and descriptions, I was expecting Conspiracy of Silence to be the standout story, and was a bit disappointed that it was attached to a historical story that I had little interest in.
Boy, was I mistaken. Conspiracy was good, as expected, but The Last Queen of the Nile absolutely blew me away. A proper historical epic for the Fourth Doctor on an impressive scale, and with the emotional beats that such stories often lacked during the Fourth Doctor's era on television. It might be my favorite pure historical to date in Who history - impressive stuff.
One thing I enjoyed about both stories, though, is that they treated K9 as an proper character, a companion in his own right (when he's too often treated as a function, a talking sonic screwdriver). Would love to see/hear more K9 stories like these.
Tom Baker Louise Jameson so amazing love having these two back together. doing big finish books
I know that Tom Baker is like 91 years old now, but if he could continue to do more big finish books that would be incredible. I don't think he sounds like he did when he played the doctor anymore. but this book is fantastic
Awesome pair of stories! Conspiracy of Silence is masterfully written genius (to be expected from Jonathan Morris), and The Last Queen of the Nile shines the full spectrum from farce to powerful emotional drama. And it goes without saying Tom Baker, Louise Jameson and John Leeson are on glorious form throughout. One of my favourite sets!
Ended up listening to one story from this set per day, which allowed time for each story to sit with me. I thought the Silents story would be my favorite, but I ended up preferring the Cleopatra story, in which she sees K-9 as a seer. Pretty strong collection.
Recorded way back in 2019 -totally loved these two stories (oh my goodness did I say that?) I was beginning to despair with BF releases. I was unsure but both are equally relistenable but The Last Queen of the Nile tipped the post a strong historical with only really K9 providing the sci-fi elements(muzzle required 😂) and not a Burton and Taylor in sight Pippa Bennet Warner and Michael Lumsden play great portrayals of Mark Anthony and Cleopatra and Blake Ritson portrays a menacing Octavian. Both Leela and the Doctor get to grow from previous stories Leela even remembering her Iceni story.I must say i loved it. After listening again am going to put it as my fave historical now from BF the episodes fly by and full of great moments.Mr D K Barnes does it again for me.
The Silence story was also tight and gripping and plenty of Silence altering moments to have you relistening and call outs to the future Matt Smith shenanigans and with a satisfying conclusion to it all.
Thank You to the writers and actors i have some hope
That is two releases recently Past Forward -7th Doc adventure and this ,that have kept me with bf for now and am hoping the next 9th adventure may provide me with a story that will keep the good Doctor alive on my timeline
