A Journey's Beginning by Angela Hone, book one in the Canid Chronology, is an excitingly fresh take on fantasy and one that I highly recommend.

Ashiy, a young redtail fox, has been raised in the remote smuggler’s den of Whim’s Haven. Hidden at the heart of a troll-infested forest, its population is full of ruffian raccoons, brigand bears, and snarl-toothed wolves. Ashiy dreams of seeing the wider world beyond its borders, but his mysterious elven godmother is determined to keep him close by her side. He knows she’s keeping secrets—about who she really is, and the past which left him an orphan.

Yet Ashiy discovers more than he bargained for after an illicit and violent encounter with one of animalkind’s oldest foes—man. It sets him on a perilous journey into the vast lands of Altharia, home to animals blessed with intelligence by the good Mistress above. Though Ashiy is at last free of Whim’s Haven, his adventure may prove more bittersweet than joyous.

Shall he ever uncover the truths hidden away from him? And shall fate return him home the same fox he once was?

Ashiy is a brilliant character. A sly fox both innocent and intriguing, Ashiy wants to find out the truth, no matter the cost. The animal companions that we journey with besides Ashiy are all unique and I'm reminded that you don't have to be human to be relatable. There are other characters that are introduced and I was a fan of how Hone intertwined the mysteries between them. It is these characters that had me turning the pages. It was a breath of fresh air to have such wonderfully written characters that make an impact to the story and Hone really mastered this.

I won't spoil the plot itself but Ashiy journeying felt akin to Bilbo in the Hobbit. Someone wanting to know more and do more and meeting the unlikeliest of characters. The action was cleanly described but the journey itself was one that I rooted for. Hone really impressed with their delicate writing and fantastic descriptions that us on this journey alongside Ashiy. The story itself unfolded beautifully and I was encouraged to keep turning the pages to find out more.

I really enjoyed book one in the Canid Chronology and am eager to see where Angela Hone takes it from here. A well-written and plotted palette cleanser that turned into so much more. A classic and familiar tale that brought plenty of excitement. Animal characters in fantasy isn't something new however animal characters being the main focus is something I don't normally delve into. I have never had the pleasure of reading Redwall but I see this being compared to that. Stuart Little, The Borrowers, Redwall. Each have an influence and I can say for certain that the Canid Chronology will be one to match these.

I was given this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Bullet review:
+Rich world-building
+A colorful cast of many different characters, some of them quite likable
+Ashiy's growing friendship with some of the characters he gets to interact with
+Many secrets and revelations handled in a satisfying way
+A thrilling climax
+Thankfully, subversion of the "all humans are evil" trope which I was afraid the book was going to fall into for a moment
-While Ashiy is by no means a bad protagonist, he is a bit bland for a fantasy main character and doesn't develop all that much throughout the story. But since this is a first book I'm sure he'll become more interesting in future books.

Anthropomorphic Fantasy Done Right - 4.6 / 5

From the prologue, The Canid Chronology, Book 1: A Journey’s Beginning commits fully to the non-human world. This is not a human story wearing fur, but a species-driven novel that has its origins in Whim’s Haven and extends through the lands of Altharia to the capital of Flintstone. Anatomy, instinct, scent, and species differences play a huge foundational role in how this story works, not as a decorative layer sprinkled on top. This world feels lived in, with culture that has aged and is reinforced through character behaviour instead of exposition alone.

Ashiy is a very strong coming-of-age protagonist. He's curious, reckless in his actions, and believable. The supporting cast of animals, whilst not all as deeply developed, never feel interchangeable or forgotten.

One of the novel’s greatest strengths is how it handles conflict. Battle scenes are sharp and controlled; they don’t drag and they're grounded in true animal behaviours. This is further reinforced throughout the book by things such as scenting. The author remains true to life as the characters scent other characters (even after passage of time) and lose the ability to track scent after weather. These characters are clearly not human stand-ins, and that is very welcoming in this genre.

Magic is present but restrained, but what stands out most is how consequences linger, with the wounded, the grieving, and the dead retaining narrative weight.

The final section tightens everything further with revelations about Ashiy’s past, the history of the capital, and the closing battle. All of these feel earned and well constructed. Small details—such as how poisonous chocolate is to animals but a delicacy among men and elves—are woven in neatly alongside the touching of whiskers and mice speaking their own language, adding further depth to the novel. After finishing, I found myself returning to the prologue to re-evaluate it post-epilogue, and it struck me how much care Angolan took in creating this world and checking it for consistency.

Tonally, this draws good comparisons to Redwall and Watership Down, but it does not rely on either structurally. Where those influences surface, they do so in spirit rather than imitation. Species differences matter. Canids, raccoons, bears, humans, and elves are not interchangeable silhouettes. Physiology affects how tools are used, how weapons are handled, how food is eaten, and how danger is perceived. Speciesism is a persistent and meaningful force that shapes politics, prejudice, and power dynamics throughout the narrative.

There are minor pacing issues, and the narration can lean heavily into exposition at times, but never to the point where it breaks immersion. This novel is clean, sitting comfortably in the YA space, and is something I’d have no hesitation recommending to family readers.

This is a strong example of and author writing anthropomorphic fiction that does justice to the genre and respects it. It stops just short of being genre-defining, but it’s very close, and I am genuinely looking forward to book two.

I received a free ARC copy of this book.

To begin, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was immediately drawn into the character of Ashiy and into the world he inhabited, which is a world of anthropomorphic animals (think Redwall, but larger species such as foxes, wolves, and bears) as well as elves and humans. Ashiy, a fox, lives in a comparatively poor village inhabited mostly by other animals, though he is an orphan raised by an elf. Elves possess beneficial magic, and are generally revered, while humans seem to possess dark magics like fire and necromancy. The world has a rich history that is unraveled throughout the book, with a once-human empire that has fallen and fled across the sea, and tales of evil, conniving felines. The plot of the book builds from these historical threads.

The book follows Ashiy, who is an interesting enough character. The mystery of who he is and why he ended up raised by an elf in a small village propels the beginning of the book, and things quickly progress as Ashiy finds himself embroiled in a plot against the kingdom. He is a bit of a passive character, but has a good heart and makes the best choices he can as things progress, and is easy to root for. As he leaves the village and learns more about the world, the reader learns about the world along with him.

I just want to mention, I love that this is a world that has furries (anthro animals) and humans. Little details like the human character eating chocolate and the animal characters amazed that he can eat poison are just so fun to me. I like the diversity in species and the author actually embracing the differences.

Other characters in the book come and go--this is Ashiy's journey, and sometimes it was hard to determine who among the characters he meets are the deuteragonists or not, which lessened some impacts of the events that unfold. Despite this, Ashiy is a strong throughline. I was left wanting a bit on his development, but this is only the first book of a series.

At the end of the book, I was definitely left wanting more--more of Ashiy and learning what he can do as he grows, and more of the world, which is incredibly rich and is what made the book for me. If you like fiction with inventive worlds with well developed histories and talking animals, this is the book for you. I'll be looking out for the sequel!

The Candid Chronology Book One: A Journey's Beginning, is an interesting, exciting, fresh take on fantasy, full of colourful characters and rich, immersive world building.

Our main character, Ashiy, Is a young, wide eyed redtail fox who dreams of life outside of his woodland home. Whim’s Haven is infested with trolls, bears and wolves, among other creatures, and Ashiy must escape to see the world beyond the forest's borders. But his godmother is determined to keep him just where he is. But an encounter with man sends him on the journey he has dreamed of, into the big wide world.

Want to know more? Be sure to pick your copy up.

So all in all, I throughly enjoyed this read and found Ashiy to be a great main character. He's inquisitive and always on the look out for answers, he's intelligent and brave but also quite innocent, and obviously, being a fox, sly.

The story is also full of many other intriguing animal characters, most very likeable and all believable and well fleshed out.

The storyline itself is a classic fantasy journey adventure ( one of my absolute favourite genres ), and the storytelling is beautifully descriptive and full of great detail, imagination and depth.

The world Ashiy and others inhabit feels real and genuine, and as you read on, you truly feel immersed in the story.

It's certainty a page turner of a read that will surely have you flipping the pages long after you should have gone to sleep.

I read this in two sittings and i very much look forward to book two.

A big 5 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 's from me.

A coming-of-age story about Ashiy, a young fox, who finds himself unexpectedly caught up in a violent conflict between humankind and the (anthropomorphic) animalkind who now reside where men used to rule.

After the death of his parents, Ashiy is raised by a secretive Elf named Ceilia, who loves him as a son and encourages him in his apprenticeship to a blacksmith.

The comparisons to Redwall are inevitable and well-deserved – humans do not have much of a presence in this world and its cultures (anymore?). Instead there seem to be societies set up by type of animal (Lord Eckner rules the Canid territory, for example). Except for towns like Ashiy’s home of Whim’s Haven, in which the different species live together.

I liked the world-building a lot, especially the language – the slang used by the characters (“Itch that mutt”) and the different “accents” the characters have. The audience seems to be the younger side of YA – I got strong Warriors and Wings of Fire vibes from the blend of humor and conflict. The story has violence and conflict, but also humor and heart. I would have liked to get to know more about Ashiy himself, but I have a feeling we’ll get to know him more as the series progresses and we see him grow and change. He’s off to a great start, and I look forward to seeing where the author takes him!

My sincerest thanks to the author for a copy of the ARC!

《 ARC REVIEW 》

"How easily you’ve forgotten, human, that we here are animals of Altharia! Our true weapons are not blades forged by your fires, for we are wielders of the claw, the talon, the tusk, and the razored fang!”

☆☆☆☆.5

I just finished reading the first book in the Canid Chronology series called A Journey's Beginning by Angola Hone!

The storytelling is absolutely superb! I adore Ashiy and all of his companions! Ashiy is a young fox who is discovering that there's more to his past than he knows, and he's determined to figure it out... all while in the company of a few eclectic animals who become his closest friends.

This book has action, adventure, found-family, and so much more! The ending shocked me, but it's setting the stage for some wild things to happen in the second book, and I can't wait to see how it continues. Ashiy is certainly in for a surprise, that's for sure!

This is a high-fantasy YA book that is very reminiscent of Lord of the Rings, but throw in some D&D and Zootopia as well. Sounds pretty eclectic, just like the group of companions, but it works, and I loved it! There is a lot of action, but it also touches on some important topics like friendship, grief, and loss. I would highly recommend it!

A huge thank you to Angola Hone for both the eARC and the PR package! I'm so thankful for the chance to read your debut novel!

The Canid Chronology is a fantastic fantasy adventure. In a medieval village called Whim's Haven, Ashiy, a young, orphaned fox who longs for adventure, is apprenticed to the local blacksmith, a bear. His elven godmother wishes him to live a safe (dull) life, and refuses to clear up the mysteries in his past.

When a group of marauding humans, along with an evil witch, bring chaos to Whim's Haven, Ashiy agrees to accompany two rangers, an elf and an elephant, to a distant city to bear witness and to help bring the humans to justice.

Interesting, fun, unique characters abound. The author has created an in-depth world that strikes just the right balance between the new and familiar. Ashiy's physical journey allows him to make mistakes and mature into a courageous, intelligent and kind hero. The journey's end is rousing, with just enough loose ends that leave me excited for the next installment of the series.

Thank you for my Advance Reader's Copy in exchange for an honest review!

The Canid Chronology is both cozy and adventurous, a perfect fall read! Anybody that enjoys renaissance festivals, DnD, or anthropomorphic animals will enjoy it as much as I did.

The continent of Altharia is a classic fantasy realm with a twist, once peaceful societies of various animal species must rally agains a truly monstrous enemy: humans!

Ashiy is a relatable teenage protagonist whose genuine relationships with those around him make his accomplishments satisfying and his losses all the more heart wrenching.

The settings are worthy of falling in love with, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll feel the same bittersweet sorrow as Ashiy to leave the smuggler’s den of Whim’s Haven behind in search of grand adventures and justice.

This journey is brimming with well-developed characters and lore, and the story’s momentum carried me quickly to the end, leaving me excited for book 2.

~Disclaimer: I received an ARC copy in exchange for a review.~

(Pardon for the rather lacklustre review since I'm not very good at writing reviews.

The pacing at first was a bit too slow for my liking. But thankfully, the pace started to pick up as I continued reading.

The book is definitely reminiscent of Redwall. But I do appreciate that the author didn't fall into the same species stereotype trap that Redwall is infamous for.

As I was reading the book, I find myself relating to the protagonist's right vs right moral dilemma, as well as the protagonist's longing to be free and explore not only the world, but also oneself.

In conclusion, I've enjoyed the story. And I look forward to seeing how the author continues from this story in the future. I rate this story 4.25/5 (hence the 4 stars since I can only give full stars).

This book was a reasonably good start for a series, but didn’t quite pack the punch I was hoping for. The setting and characters were interesting enough in the beginning, but everything lacked development as the story continued. The characters were a little less interesting than they could’ve been, the emotional swings hit less than they could’ve, and the big conflict felt like it resolved in a way that didn’t totally work for me. Also, maybe it was because of the age of the MC (& presumably audience: 12-18), but Ashiy’s emotional journey felt immature as well. I didn't really get why the world seems to be almost entirely populated by "woodland" animals...and elephants. What? I did enjoy the scene about chocolate, which was a clever bit of writing. All in all, it was okay, but just didn’t quite land as well as it could’ve for me.

A brisk moving plot, reminding me of Redwall and The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings.

Following a young fox, we’re shown a world that is made up of various anthropomorphic animals, elves, and humans. Ashiy, our canid protagonist, lives in a pirate town, with his godmother, an elf who keeps their past hidden from everyone, including Ashiy. But humans are making their way into this land ruled by animals and elves, and Ashiy finds himself in the middle of the humans’ attempt to reclaim their land.

I really enjoyed this story. Having been a Redwall fan for years, the author has done a wonderful job of using that inspiration, along with other fantasy mainstays, to create a fascinating world that is new and exciting. I look forward to getting into Book Two of The Canid Chronicles.

Fantasy is not a genre I read, but I absolutely loved this book.

This story takes you on an exciting adventure, full of amazing world building, interesting characters, and exciting battles. While the beginning started a bit slow, I think it was necessary to establish a solid foundation of the world of Altharia before the real adventures begin. The story took me on a rollercoaster of emotions, and I quickly got attached to all the characters (and shed a few tears for them towards the end).

I cannot wait for the adventures to continue in book 2! (And thank you for my ARC copy)

"The Canid Chronology" by Angola Hone is an incredibly fun read that is reminiscent of the "Redwall" series and "The Secret of NIMH." It carries a classic Dungeons & Dragons feel, filled with mysterious lore, world-hinging quests, and adventurers of every class. This exciting and fun story will engage older teens, young adults, and even adult readers. The world-building is immersive, the characters are well-developed, the dialogue is often clever and snappy, and the plot is both thrilling and heartwarming. It's a good read for fans of fantasy and adventure.

Full disclosure: I do HAVE to give this book five stars because my brother wrote it.

Fortunately, it was a pleasure to read once I warmed up the generally unfamiliar-to-me fantasy genre. Colorful characters, vivid settings, and a fun romp of a plot.

I am going to have to make him tell me the correct pronunciation on every one of these names...

I used to read all the time, but I kind of fell out of it and since sticking with books has been a lot more difficult. This is one of the few books in a long time that had me completely engrossed and inspired me. It's a great, creative story with a lot of awesome world-building and hidden history under the present story. I can't wait for the next book when it comes out this summer!
