Wings of Ink #3

Claws of Death

Rate this book
Trading one prison for another, one kingdom for the next—there’s no escape for Ayna.
Myron is free, but freedom comes at steep cost.

Back in Erina’s gilded prison, Ayna has one goal: escape. But with the King of Tavras holding her captive and her sister’s sacrifice keeping her from running, she’s forced to play a dangerous game. If she fails to outmaneuver Erina, she'll never break free. But waiting for Myron to return might risk everything they’ve fought for.

As long as Myron remains free, there’s still hope.

While Ayna fights to stay strong, Myron is racing to save what’s left of his court. With the help of a fairy princess and an Askarean general, he prepares for the looming threat of Tavras, armed with magic-suppressing weapons. But Tavras isn’t the only enemy. The Flames still seek revenge, and without a powerful ally, Myron’s court is doomed. An ancient enemy might just be the ally he needs.

Packed with sizzling romance, intrigue, and high-stake battles, Claws of Death is the heart-pounding third book in the epic romantic fantasy series, Wings of Ink, perfect for fans of A Court of Thorns and Roses, Quicksilver, and From Blood and Ash.

too similar to book1&2

I was disappointed with this book. There was a lot of places this story could have gone. Without spoilers they’re still fighting the same 2/3 people this whole story. Yes little things happen here and there but I’m no longer invested in the story. It just feels dragged out even with more characters. I don’t think I will finish the series

I struggled with this one, just the same thing happening over and over again! The cliffhanger at the end is good though!

I knew it—I just KNEW that I was going to be screaming by the time I was done with the book. Actually, I started screaming way before that.

Claws of Death is the third in the Wings of Ink series, and it’s an emotional rollercoaster—perhaps the most emotionally impactful book of the series so far. The second book in the series, Heart of Night, hurt my heart (a lot), with Myron and Ayna being separated. I thought I’d been through enough but the author had other ideas. Things happen in this book that test their love even further and destroys both the characters and us readers emotionally. It’s both beautiful and tragic. Ayna and Myron have a love that defies death itself, and every time they’re forced apart by fate or enemies it is torture. This is probably why I loved their reunion scene in Claws of Death so much and why I was devastated by the unfolding events all the way up to the ending.

Once again, Ayna and Myron are surrounded by a cast of wonderful characters. Most we already know and love, while others we meet for the first time in this book and again, I’ve found characters I love like King Recienne and his mate. I would not say no to a series focused on Recienne, Clio and Tori. I simply love them!

What can you expect from the Claws of Death and the Wings of Ink series?
✨ fated mates
💀 touch her and… AND touch him and…
🌶️ steamy romantasy
✨ magic and fairies

🌶️

I’m going to be completely honest. I skimmed through the last 20% of the book because I totally lost interest but just wanted to see what, if any, conclusion had been made to any of the sub plots or anything really. It felt super repetitive.

Book one- Ayna’s locked away in prison and subsequently traded for another version of that –or so she thinks –in being the next Crow King’s bride (supposedly imminent death) but no, plan foiled, she fell in love and found some power but then before she’s professed her love – all hell breaks loose and she’s kidnapped and we think he’s dead but no, he lived.

Book two - she’s locked away as another king’s bride by a traitor to the crow kingdom and Myron has to find her and any survivors so he bands with the fae general (and Clio’s mate, she was captured as well, but of course she was). Their mantra becomes to find one, find both”. Oh, and I’ll bet you couldn’t guess it, the two big badass warriors are captured by someone simply by throwing some kind of liquid on their head. So SHE ultimately had to help bust Myron and Tori out of the dungeon after she’d been freed only to turn around and sacrifice herself for him when we ALL know that’d have never happened.

Book three, SSDD

Anyone want to throw me a bone and send me the cliff's notes version of the last and save me the hours of my life?

⚠️⚠️SPOILERS AHEAD⚠️⚠️

🗨️ RANDOM THOUGHTS 🗨️
🗨️I think the thing that drives me crazy is that you’ve got these big bad ass fae with all this fighting experience, armed to the teeth, and let’s not forget they’re fucking MAGICAL and someone just throws some goo on them and they’re just immobilized. It was… too easy. I realize that sometimes you want it to be that – just elementary in execution – but come OOOOOOOOOOONNNNN this makes your MMCs look anything BUT the big badasses they are.

🗨️The pep talk from the supporting cast about the mate bond is something I hadn’t anticipated… letting others see their vulnerability. That was a nice touch

🗨️The gods at odds with one another like they’re using Ayna as their literal plaything. So either she has powers from and of the gods or she doesn’t but them being wishy washy is just… stupid.

🗨️ I feel like there should have been some kind of sacrifice of a MC in this one…. Another betrayal, a twist… anything… but it was just repetition of this cycle.

🗨️ I got some tired head from the telepathic conversations being held.

🗨️I’m not mature enough for there to be a character named Tata… seriously – BOOBS… you’re naming a character tits? Like absolutely NOTHING … NOTHING could be taken seriously after that.

◦ I've received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ◦

⮞ 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 ⮜
Ayna - Well her character has gone through a lot of things, but that ending left me wondering what in the world is going on. I loved how quickly she learned her skills and such, however, I got a bit annoyed with her.
Myron - Seeing him so vulnerable and seeing the link between the two was really beautiful and so heartbreaking. When *that* particular scene happened and he realized what happened was such a sad moment.
The rest of the characters - They add so much to the story and I love seeing so many of the past characters. Also, 100+ years since the The Quarter Mage events and you'll encounter some characters from there in here 🤯 say what? That was such a nice surprise!!!

⮞ 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝-𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 ⮜
You cannot ever get tired of the fae world and their political issues, even tho sometimes the political issues can be a bit overwhelming not gonna lie. I loved the details offered, the battle the magical system all the things that make the story go round weren't hard to understand.

⮞ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝/𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝 ⮜
I liked how things developed and they were just going so nice and linear, with no boring moments, lots of events happening, fighting, political issues and just trying to remain alive. That ending blew my mind because 😲
Yeah, the story had plenty of events that blew my mind and also made me feel all the sorrows the characters were going through, especially *that* moment in the story.

⮞ 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐞/TW ⮜
I'd say the story is round 3 out 5 on the spicy level. You get details but NOT overly detailed, and the scenes aren't every other page, is a good ration plot to smut. There is fighting, burning the skin, abuse and kidnapping in the story but nothing that happened in the story has triggered me.

I didn’t think this series could hurt me more after the second book, but Claws of Death once again delivered a story that didn’t hold back from emotional sucker punches and remains anything but predictable. It was definitely the most emotional book of the series so far—and that’s saying a lot! Myron and Anya’s bond is tested like never before, putting both in a vulnerable position and with more drama to come if the cliffhanger is any indication. The ending of this book really surprised me. I appreciated how different it was to what we’ve seen in the series so far, and it leaves room to expand even more on the world building, which is one of my favorite parts of this complex fantasy series. It also leaves me with so many questions!

One of my favorite aspects of this series remains the found family element. We get to spend more time with characters met in previous books, but we also meet new ones. My favorite among the new additions are King Recienne and his mate. Their backstory intrigues me to the point that I’d love to see a book dedicated to them.

If you love dark fantasy like From Blood and Ash, this is a series I highly recommend. Here are some things to expect:
- fated mates
- touch her and… AND touch him and…
- steamy romantasy
- magic and fairies
- unlikely alliances
- heart-wrenching romance
- found family
- Beauty and the Beast vibes in book 1

The found family shines in this installment and I loved the additional POV. The highlight for me was the deeper exploration of Ayna and Myron’s relationship. The devotion and desperation of their love was everything 😭. But loyalties and bonds are tested. The stakes have never been higher for our heroes. Will they overcome the challenges ahead?

Claws of Death is an angsty and thrilling third installment. The reader is treated to more action, magic, sizzling romance, and heartache. My heart was left in shambles and I need the next book ASAP 😭

This is my honest and voluntary review. Huge thanks the author for the opportunity to read and review this advanced reader copy!

I loved this book! So honored to receive an ARC copy. I really enjoyed the pacing; there was always something happening. The found family and character development in this series so far is top teir and I love that we’re seeing new characters added that we learn to know and love. Watching kaira grow and become more confident made my heart so happy. The amount of anxiety I had for the last 25% is probably unhealthy. And the ending; still picking my jaw up off the floor. I have so many unanswered questions and I can’t wait to see what’s in for Ayna, Myron and the crew in the next installment.

4.5 stars. The only reason it’s not a 5 is I felt like the word mate was used far too many times.

I’m so heartbroken for everyone, none of this is fair!!!

This is the 3 book of this series and I’m so incredibly love with all the character developments. Ayna and Myron have such a strong bond I know they can get through anything but this book makes your heart cry for them. They finally make their way back to each other to have such another huge obstacle to overcome!! I cannot wait to see what is next

In this story everything hits harder. The friendships feel battle-forged, the brother-and-sisterhood bonds tighter than ever as danger circles closer. Love is no longer a spark it’s something you fight for, something worth bleeding over. But with power-struggles rising and lies unraveling, the betrayals cut deeper than in the earlier books. This story shows that not all prisons have walls, and not everyone who stands beside you is truly loyal. It’s emotional, raw, and full of the kind of twists that leave you breathless. This book broke me in the best way.

This is the best one out of the series thus far! I was a freaking mess of anxiety so many times.

Ayna and Marlon were reunited much earlier in the book than I expected (about 18% into it). They are relationship, depend, even greater, and then the unthinkable happens when Erina burned out her mating mark. They both go through horrific trauma from this that adds a whole new layer to their journey.

New characters are introduced! My favorite is the fairy king.

Epic battles and skirmishes happen. There are more developments made with the magic-blocking drugs that make things so much worse.

But, of course, Ayna makes a deal with the gods and now I’m left on a major cliffhanger! Ugh!

This book took forever to finish. I don't know exactly what it was, but I just found myself wanting to read something different after awhile. I also think it just became too repetitive in the plot. For the third book, I expected more. Ending of course left in a major cliffhanger, so I gotta read the next book. lol.

The urge to go play games or doom scroll while reading is setting in. The constant repeating things three times is getting annoying.

I’m actually grateful the next book isn’t out yet because I don’t think I could read it just yet because I’m getting bored with this series.

22% into the book and already the FMC and MMC were separated again. Neither can function without the other.
Myron, Crow King and Anya, crow queen, teaming up with unlikely friends to defeat the baddies. The first two books held my interest and I cared about where it was going. Then she was taken again and I spent over an hour of them trying to rejoin each other…again. The magic was interesting and I was curious about it all, but it was revealed too slowly or the in between action didn’t hold me. Maybe I’ll return to these characters plotting in the woods some more …maybe I won’t.

As someone who was very excited for this book, and has really enjoyed this series, I am sorry to say that I have mixed feelings about this book. No doubt, Angelina Steffort is a great storyteller and this series has me locked in and fully invested; the story line and character development in Claws of Death were fantastic. That being said, I found the writing to be a bit inconsistent and disjointed, to the point where it broke me out of the flow of the story almost every chapter. Whether with odd “-isms” that weren’t quite right, awkward sentences I had to reread multiple times to understand, and overly repetitive speech or over-telling details that made it feel disjointed and could have been remembered or inferred (which I definitely noticed in Wings of Ink, but not as much in Heart of Night), I just was disappointed. I wonder if these are issues that could/should have been brought to light by an editor, but I was surprised at how many moments like this there were. Again, I think the story is awesome and will absolutely be looking forward to the next installment, but I hope that perhaps these will be better edited in future editions, and that book 4 will be more carefully reviewed….And I’m upset to be walking away thinking about the writing more than how good of a story it is, but I really found it very distracting!

🌶🌶 (open door, but short)
🔥🔥

I started out really enjoying the series, but for some reason this book was tougher to get through. I would start the book, and then decide to read something else, and would come back, reading just pieces at a time. If that happens in a book for me, that it can't keep my interest in one go (I am not too much of a mood reader, so usually I stick to one book at a time unless it is an anthology), then the book is only okay for me.

I started to like the side characters more than the main characters, and the plot at times seemed to repeat itself, or too drawn out or too fast pace. The book this time felt less consistent in pacing, and some of the decisions or thoughts of the characters annoyed me.

I don't think I will be continuing this series, since it has consistently gone downhill from the first book.

I absolutely love this series, but the emotional pain and angst are absolutely debilitating!

I read this when it was first released last fall, and decided to also listen to the audiobook when I saw it had finally been released.

The story is so so good, but the emotional impact conveyed by the narrators is like a punch to the heart!

Anya and Myron have been through so much, and just when you think things might get better- finally! - fate/the gods/the powers that be deliver a cosmic bitchslap!!

My heart physically ached through a solid 3/4 of this book, and given the way it ended, book 4 is going to start out with even more pain. I bought extra tissues, I’m ready for it!

I’m tired…

I wish I could walk away from this series. Which is weird because I like the characters, especially Anya and Myron. But the story has fallen into the same thing over and over again. Lot’s of internal dialogue about HOW things re going to go, just for our hero’s to be surprised by yet another ambush. Enough already, let the good guys win and give us our HEA! Not sure I can handle another 400 pages of the same build up and outcomes.

I like this series…the characters, the story, etc. BUT it is too drawn out. Too many set backs, too many “good guys can never get ahead”. I found myself scanning chapters because it was just too “over and over” same crap, different day. This series should have wrapped up in Book 4…instead it is being dragged out for another long book. I’ll be glad when I’m done!

Finishing this book was painful. I found myself skipping pages and paragraphs. The author could’ve made this a much shorter book and ended the series. Repeating the same dilemma in a 400+ book was so unnecessary. High possibility I will not be continuing with this series

I’ll start by saying that I listened to the audiobook version and my review is based on that and covers not only the first book but the first three books in the series.

Why all three in the same review?

BECAUSE THE THREE BOOKS ARE ALL THE FUCKING SAME!!

I’m going to address the narration before I get to anything else because I think good and bad narration can literally make or break a book.
There were two narrators for this series, one for Anya, one for Myron (which is a stupid and not at allllllll adequate fae crow king who is devastatingly handsome but more like “this is little lord Fauntleroy’s special friend type of a name). BOTH narrators were, frankly, terrible.
The problem was not actually that they were BAD. the problem was that they were BAD FOR THIS.
The woman sounded like she was reading something along the lines of Legally Blonde; every line read with a perpetually peppy twang that made it impossible to relate to the character at all.
The narrator reading for Myron on the other hand sounded like he was auditioning for the next reading of Inspector Morse and wasn’t able to sound like the super hot fae male Myron is described as being because he was busy putting on his trench coat and wellingtons.

So that’s the disaster of narrative choice covered and I’ll now move on to the actual story.

The actual story: It’s stupid. That’s pretty much the gist of it. The story is stupid. The characters are stupid. They all keep walking face first into the very obvious brick walls that are the traps set by the bad guys and just as the trap is being sprung they go oh do you think this could be a trap because I have this tingling feeling in my forehead from the brick wall I just walked straight into that this could be a trap. And at this point, …the end of book three for me…I’m pretty much ready to say y’all deserve to keep getting caught by the nufty human and his weird plucked chicken friend because you keep doing really dumb shit!

So why did I get all the way through 3 books if it’s that bad? First, I believe everyone deserves a second chance, even if that someone is an inanimate object. Second I thought for a moment there it was picking up so I went for a third round. And then I got to that point where I realised that these people are a bunch of idiots and apparently I am too because I’ve just wasted about 30 hours listening to three books where the exact same thing happens to the same bloody characters over and over again and I don’t actually give a shit.

One thing I feel like I need to bring up…because it, what…bothered me, I guess is the best way to put it. In the first book there is this weird exchange between Anya and Myron where she starts calling him “moron” and continues doing so off and on for the rest of the book. What bothers me about this is that it was utterly unnecessary. It made me think of the classic example of a low-brow high school bully, not the character Anya is supposed to be and that single thing kind of turned me off Anya from that moment on and as much as I may have wanted to like her or give a crap about her, I just didn’t.

Hells bells and cocker shells is this book exceptional! JUST WOWZA! As soon as this book landed in my TBR, I threw everything aside to read it! I mean, after the cliffhanger in the last book, my emotions were in such a knot, my despair for Ayna so profound, I was literally drooling with anticipation! And yes, I was sucked in immediately, a GIVEN with this outstanding author! After the dry mouth (mine!) start, I quickly found myself jumping up and down in excitement! Elation combined with despair, Myron and his fellow captives manage to escape but not so Ayna and Kiara, they're still firmly in Erina's clutches, with little chance of escaping. So when THAT happened, I was so thrilled at the unlikely allies Ayna gained, I HAD to screech in joy! I confess to expelling a breath so loud, the windows shook! Such was my relief! But the cat and mouse game is far from over....as I expected, Ms Steffort took me on a rollercoaster ride through so many twists, there were times I was physically ill and others where I was grinning from ear to ear. I don't think any characters have had such an effect on me as Myron and Anya have, they have taken space in my very soul and heck they'll stay there forever!

As the long lost, last rightful heir, Erina is hellbent on using Anya as a prop to legitimise his claim as king, resorting to the most heinous of deeds, that even I was agog at his contemptible behaviour ! But it's Ephegos who wears the crown of disgusting person! From the first sighting of Kiara, I knew she was going to be a special character and she was, she is. I absolutely adore the budding romance between her and Herinor, yeah, I HAVE forgiven him entirely for his role in Ayna's torture, extenuating circumstances and all that caused him to do what he did. This is a complex, convoluted plot, following several characters, which this author pens so brilliantly, it's a plot of evil, love, loyalty and trust. It's a tale that takes me through a concoction of events, many so unexpected, some warming my heart, some have my pulse racing. The action is immensely real, shoot, EVERYTHING is very real! The ending though, oh my dear lordie, noooooooo.....

Such is the skill of this author's literary prowess, I'm flabbergasted at her storytelling. From characters to plot, to the unseen and unexpected, to the beauty of the prose, to the fierce action, to a found family like no other, impossibility, each book gets better and better, each book evokes more passionate reactions in me, each book leaves me feeling as though I'm surfacing from a drug induced coma. She takes my very soul, pounds it to a pulp and then smooths it out again. I'm limp with my heightened emotions, I'm ecstatic at the love that jumps off the pages, I'm drenched in feelings of awe, completely gobsmacked at the wow factor Angelina infuses into every book she writes. And you guessed it, I NEED MORE!

Claws of Death on kolmas osa Wings of Ink- saagaa ja sen tapahtumat jatkavat suoraan siitä mihin edellinen osa Heart of Night jäi.

The third installment in the "Wings of Ink" series picks up right where the second book left off, and it’s a thrilling continuation that you won’t want to miss. If you haven’t read the first two books yet, be sure to catch up before diving into this one.

After narrowly escaping the clutches of King Erina, Myron is recovering from the brutal torture he endured at the hands of his captor. Herinor’s help has saved him, but his road to recovery is still long. Meanwhile, Wolayna (also known as Ayna) remains trapped in Erina’s palace, suffering from the daily injections of the serum that weakens her. Despite her marriage to Myron, King Erina still plans to force her into marriage, and he’s holding Ayna’s half-sister hostage to ensure her compliance. Ayna’s desperation to escape Erina’s control intensifies, but her efforts are complicated by the treacherous crow, Ephegos. Just when hope seems lost, an unexpected ally steps forward to help Ayna and her sister break free from Erina’s grasp.

Once again, the author delivers a gripping story that’s both beautifully written and emotionally intense. Ayna and Myron’s relationship is one of the highlights of the series—full of playful banter and undeniable chemistry and their connection continues to evolve. In this book, Ayna’s determination to protect Myron, her kingdom, and the people she loves takes center stage. She faces immense personal challenges, but her resilience and courage shine through as she fights not only against King Erina but also against her own inner demons. Ayna’s journey is deeply emotional, and readers will feel every moment of her struggle.

The stakes are high, and the twists and turns will keep you on the edge of your seat. There are moments in the story that will have you shouting at the author, wondering, “Why? Why would you do this to us?”—but that’s part of what makes this book so compelling. It’s a fast-paced, heart-wrenching read that leaves you eager for the next installment.

If you’ve enjoyed the first two books, this one will absolutely satisfy your craving for more. And if you haven’t started the series yet, now’s the perfect time to dive in. I can’t wait to see where the story goes next!

So much happens in this book that I don’t even know what to say (it’s like it’s all still sinking in for me IT IS THAT MUCH – in a book VERY well written way, so all good), so I’ll take my best stab at it.

Claws Of Death does not disappoint. We start off were we left off in Heart Of Night and, I didn’t think this was possible, but this book will take you on an even BIGGER roller coaster of emotions than the last one did. One minute you’ll be angry/hopeless/somewhat happy, the next you’ll be happy/excited, and after that you’re scared/feel like it’s you fighting for your life and before you know it you’re thrown right back around to feeling hopeless/like everything is over… it’s a wreck of a ride, so make sure your tissues are nearby. And chocolate. Definitely chocolate... you’ll especially need it for the agony that you’ll be in when you get to the cliffhanger ending and realise that you have to wait for the next book in the series to find out what happens next.

The characters and world building is some of the best I’ve ever read (it’s right up there with some of my favourites; Vampire Academy, Akarnae, The Prison Healer, The Morganville Vampires books and so many more - If you love any of those books, you will love the WINGS OF INK series). I love characters in this, I hate characters in this, and I can’t wait to see what happens to them all next (even the ones that I hate - in some cases especially the ones that I hate - IYKYK). The world building is so well done that it makes me want to find a way to crawl into the book and live in this world (and find my own Myron). Also, that fairy food sounds amazing.

I can’t wait to read book 4, FLIGHT OF FATE, out MAY 31st 2025, and to find out what happens next in Ayna’s, Myron’s (and rest of their gangs) story!

If this is your first time reading one of Angelina J Steffort’s books, I highly recommend checking out the rest of her bibliography. It does NOT disappoint!

Huge thank you to the author for selecting me to be on her ARG team and for letting me read this ARC.

P.S. This series has amazing covers; I love to just stare at them sometimes.

Claws of Death, the third story in the Wings of Ink series, picks up right where the last book, Heart of Night, ended. Crow King Myron has escaped the dungeon of King Erina but at the cost of Ayna’s freedom, so he is totally distraught when he should be healing from the extreme torture he endured in the dungeon. Ayna is back in the same predicament of being drugged to suppress her magic while being paraded around as Erina’s future bride. However, new forces are in play and there is an underground faction still loyal to the old Milevishja royal line that would love to put Ayna back on the throne as the sole surviving royal heir.

The political intrigue is upped even more in this third book, and Myron and Ayna must navigate treacherous waters to figure out friend from foe. I was heartbroken when King Erina tried to sever Myron’s mate bond by burning off Ayna’s mate tattoo, but I did expect her to handle the aftermath better than she did. I feel like she should have had more faith in Myron and their love instead of basing their relationship on the presence of the fated mate mark.

As the war ramped up and the band of heroes were beset on every side by tragedies, I was glued to the page. Ayna’s path out of the deep depression over the mate mark removal was more in line with what I expected from a pirate queen. When she embraces her crow side and regains her magic, I cheered for her. Unfortunately, tapping into all her god and goddess given gifts came at a steep cost, and the book ends with her stuck in another predicament, this one quite unexpected.

I can’t wait to see where Angelina Steffort takes the story in the next book. I heartily recommend this series to all paranormal romance fans. The book is not without its flaws, the main one being that the FMC is a little too much of a passive victim at times when I felt she should have pulled up her big girl panties and dealt with it more decisively. However, it is not enough to distract from the epic storyline and this series is well worth a read.

I read an advance copy in return for leaving an honest review.
