Ballade van het bos
Het is 1970, een kleine stad aan de voet van de Alpen in de Piëmont. Een juf op een basisschool vertrekt van huis, maar in plaats van naar school gaat ze het bos in. In de krant heeft ze net gelezen dat een van haar leerlingen uit een raam in de beek is gesprongen en is overleden. De juf verdwijnt en dagenlang volgt men de zoektocht met ingehouden adem. Degene die haar vindt is een eenzaam kind, Martino. De vrouw hallucineert, heeft honger en wordt overmand door schuldgevoelens. Quando me cruzo com um livro de que nunca ouvi falar e me chama a atenção por alguma razão, leio da sinopse só o suficiente para evitar enredos de que fujo a sete pés (tantos, cada vez mais) e, em seguida, leio a primeira página para ver se me agarra, o que aconteceu desta vez. Parece, no entanto, que também tenho de começar a procurar no final as notas dos autores. Se o tivesse feito com “Voltar do Bosque”, saberia que este livro se baseia num acontecimento verídico que se passou com uma parente um tanto distante de Maddalena Vaglio Tanet. Quantas pessoas não têm vontade de escrever sobre um episódio marcante ou um membro da sua família? Felizmente, nem todos o fazem porque a maioria sabe escrever a lista de compras e pouco mais, mas quem ganha a vida nessa área, como sucede com esta autora que se dedicou aos livros infantis, devia resistir a essa tentação, como já vi em exemplos anteriores, porque um incidente dificilmente se torna um bom romance. E é essa a minha grande crítica a este livro que tem 250 páginas mas devia ter metade ou, se calhar, ser somente um conto, porque não tem conteúdo suficiente que justifique tantas mudanças de perspectiva nem tantas historietas paralelas.
Em 1970, uma professora perfeitamente banal entra pelo bosque adentro, em estado de choque, depois de receber uma terrível notícia sobre uma aluna, Giovanna, que ela acompanhava de perto. Giovanna, a debater-se com um corpo que estranhava, já mais desenvolvido do que o das colegas, era repetente, tinha dificuldades de aprendizagem e era sovada pelo pai sempre que tinha más notas, mas Silvia nunca desistiu dela. Essa mesma escola é frequentada por Martino, também limitado por uma severa asma e com o desconforto de ser um recém-chegado, que acaba por encontrar a professora no bosque. Esta parte, já ficcionada para preencher os espaços em branco na história verídica, causa-me algum espanto, pois não me parece fazer sentido que, depois de a população, os bombeiros e a polícia com cães-pisteiros terem batido ribeiros e floresta, seja uma criança forasteira a encontrar a desaparecida basicamente após a primeira incursão. Creio que é o universo dos livros infantis que guia a escritora neste seu primeiro romance que foi candidato ao Prémio Strega. Maddalena Vaglio Tanet tem uma escrita eficiente e uma boa capacidade de descrição e de criação de vida interior nas personagens, mas não me chega como história de culpa e expiação.

Ainda era uma menina, achava que era especial e o que o mundo lhe devia alguma coisa: sorte, uma saída. À sua volta, secretamente, também os seus colegas saboreavam a luz da manhã, os cabelos em que podiam mexer e compor com as mãos, os gemidos das cadeiras arrastadas no chão, o papel dos cadernos e dos diários cheios de dedadas, de onde vinha um odor a tinta ácida e lanches, e trocavam olhares furtivos, de alívio um pouco culpado, de sobreviventes.

My word, Goodreads, we need to talk about your tagging system? Thriller? Mystery? Okay, fine, a mystery as to the whereabouts of the teacher after her student's suicide, yes, but a thriller??? They really should read the books before aimlessly assigning genres to them; for a thriller, it was not. Rather, it was a reflective, introspective look at the human psyche when faced with the overwhelming burden of guilt and grief that catapults the heart and mind to have a pseudo-breakdown of isolation and shame.
One late afternoon, in a small Italian village, schoolteacher Silva gently reprimands her eleven-year-old student, Giovanna, for skipping out on school yet again, informing her that she will have to notify her parents, as well, of her transgression. That evening, Giovanna jumps from her bedroom window; the following morning, Silva disappears.
“Madness, in his view, wasn’t something that existed outside people of sound mind, but as a possibility within each of us.”
Setting the scene, itself, was interesting; the sparse details into Giovanna's personality were not quite enough to determine why she did it, but enough to make Silva conflicted and tormented over her possible connection that led to her death. The human mindset is fragile and lays much of its foundation in its upbringing ; the innocence of youth is unpredictable, but with a touch of perception that often takes shape. With a careful hand, the author travels the writing through Silva's past and the various village members' thoughts and speculative theories regarding this bewildering occurence to befall their quiet village - a mixture of panic, bewilderment, and love - while carrying on their own daily lives that inadvertently were affected by Silva's disappearance.
Did Silva leave out of shame? Guilt? Remorse? Was her action too drastic, or was it without the realm of understanding? Was she an enigma, whose own past laid roots for the possibility of making her own rash decision? Was it fair of her to expect such loyalty from one of her students to keep her location a secret till her mind was at a balance to finally accept her involvement or rather not as the cause of Giovanna's impulsive decision? Was it her duty as a teacher that finally reached a breaking point? Was it Martino's own ambitious drive to be the victor of discovering her that kept him quiet, or rather somehow knowing in his ten-year-old heart that maybe, she just needed her own time to process the actions that had occurred.

The cover looked hopeful with the promise that there would be some kind of emotional relationship that would develop between Silva and Martino; sadly, much of their reflections happened on their own, in that whatever life-altering moments affected them personally, it was also solved individually. Silva also looks a lot saner than who she was portrayed during her self-imposed banishment, what with her feverish visions and her gnawing shame over the loss of her student. It's a strange story, but I can't bring myself to entirely dislike it. The slow unraveling of various story-lines that slowly glued the plot together was enough for me to somewhat appreciate the overall message.
For with a rather poor rating to show for it, I read with a sense of gnawing uncertainty that I would display the same poor judgment. I was confused as to why we did not get some insight from the students' parents. I struggled to put faces to the names that were moving in and out of the pages. I felt certain scenes were unnecessary and crude in depiction. I was frustrated and annoyed with Silva's selfish decision of running away and how she imposed upon Martino to keep a secret (that) was both a burden and a compensation.
“The novel emerges from that lacuna and fills it with imagination.”
The Author's Note, however, helped settle a bit of my conflicting thoughts. It did not quite explain why the parents were not given any preference, but considering how the real-life girl was treated with such bewildering facts, I respect the author's decision for not doing so. It also gave me a clearer perspective of very slightly being more forgiving of Silva's 'breakdown'. The Note from the Translators was also helpful in allowing me to see the finer sides of the writing style I may have overlooked; the lyrical harmony in the lengths it took to capture the raw power and beauty of the author's words that I grew to appreciate.
Parents are also teachers; children can also teach something. It is depicted in the various lives the author takes a look at during Silva's absence from the village; the changes and the reveals that impacted them with her disappearance, allowing them to take certain liberties, but also take a closer look at one another and 'trying to see herself through her daughter’s eyes and wondering what she was teaching her.' Because it is that crucial moment when Silva's mind and heart discern a rational sound judgment into the fault in her behavior, does she break free of her own crippling conscience and find a way out.

I don’t think I was the right person for this book. A teacher runs off into the forest after a child in her classroom commits suicide. I was expecting a quiet, introspective novel that drew on human connection, emotions, and relationships. While it’s certainly quiet (and to a point introspective), there are so many characters that get page time (in a short, under 300 page novel), that I feel we didn’t get the depth and emotion or connection we could have if it was more focused. However, I could see others loving this historical fiction novel that takes place in a small Italian town.

Fondamentalmente, questo libro non è il classico romanzo,ma piuttosto un racconto. Uno scorcio nelle vite di persone di paese che viene sconvolto da una tragedia. È come quei discorsi a mezza bocca, quei sussurri delle vecchie che pur non trovandosi nei circoli sono informatissime su tutti : " té, che l'hai sentito della Romilda?". Non esiste protagonista se non il bosco, descritto minuziosamente come se l'autrice ci avesse vissuto davvero; il lettore non è nient'altro che un merlo, che svolazza, senza soffermarsi, guardando le vite altrui. E questo rimane : uno spettatore passivo senza troppi orpelli, sentimenti, giudizi.

Untold Lessons is a curious book based loosely on the experience of the writer's own family.
In the story Giovanna, a student who does not seem to fit in with her classmates, begins to skip school. Her teacher, Silvia, who has already spent many hours helping Giovanna, feels compelled to speak to her mother about the increasing absences despite knowing that Giovanna is often beaten for bad behaviour. On learning that her mother intends to tell her father, Giovanna threatens to kill herself. Her mother doesn't believe her and Giovanna throws herself from a fourth storey window.
The tragedy does not end there because on learning of the child's death Silvia walks away from her life, disappearing completely.
The book concentrates on the stories of Silvia, who is discovered by new boy, Martini (who has moved with his mother from Turin to improve his asthma) and the help Martino offers the teacher. It also delves into the lives of Silvia's distraught family and the fractured family of Martino.
The novel deals with issues of family, love, loss, suicide and bullying in a sensitive way. It certainly appears to be a very strange story amd knowing it was based on fact does not make it any less so.

Racconto intenso e reso bene nei toni e nelle precise e profonde descrizioni psicologiche dei protagonisti. Storia ritrovata nei ricordi della famiglia e del piccolo paese di provenienza. Il bosco conosciuto nella giovinezza diventa vivo e lucente contenitore di storie, animali e alberi abitati da presenze che si fanno storia. Gli antichi casali ormai diruti portano segni di vite ormai lontane nel tempo e nello spazio. Abbracciare e mescolare il dolore personale con quello di un'avvenimento sconvolgente è il filo da seguire. Cercare di riportare a casa chi nel bosco sta cercando di annullarsi è un compito forse troppo grande per uno scolaro undicenne. Buona lettura

Bioglio, anni '70. Un'undicenne si suicida e una maestra particolarmente affezionata a lei scompare. Il paese è sconvolto, si stringe e avvolge su sé stesso per consolarsi, ripararsi dal dolore. Vengono organizzati il funerale della giovane Giovanna e una spedizione per cercare la maestra Silvia, viva o (più probabilmente) morta. Due tragedie che scuotono la tranquillità di tutti. Ciascuno, dietro la porta di casa propria, si pone delle domande: perché è successo questo? Potrebbe succedere anche alla mia famiglia? Sono un buon genitore? Sono un bravo figlio?
Una storia semplice ma avvincente, scritta in tono intimo, con descrizioni vivide e dettagliate. Inizialmente ho provato un po' di fatica a ricordare i nomi dei molti personaggi, ma alla fine la coralità del romanzo è risultata una scelta vincente. Il finale mi ha spiazzata, come capita con quei libri autoconclusivi che terminano con un taglio netto che il protagonista dà alla sua vita. Non che qui ci sia un solo protagonista, tutt'altro: la maestra Silvia, il piccolo Martino, Giovanna, suor Annangela, i bambini e le famiglie, l'intera comunità del paesino di montagna... il bosco stesso figura come personaggio attivo, facendo al contempo da barriera e da passaggio tra il mondo civilizzato e la natura incontaminata.
Consigliato a chi cerca un romanzo esistenziale, avvolto da un mistero che spezza la serenità quotidiana dei personaggi.

Il primo a colpirmi è stato il linguaggio. È’ una lingua che si allontana da quella che ho trovato negli altri romanzi di scrittori e scrittrici italiani contemporanei che ho letto, perché non è retorica, non va alla ricerca spasmodica del dolore verbale e non vuole stupire. Eppure è puntuale, sinuosa, stuzzicante, giusta.
Anche la trama mi ha fatto da subito tirare un sospiro di sollievo perché è originale, perché finalmente un autore italiano riesce a usare la fantasia e a non accartocciarsi sempre sulla rivisitazione di fatti di cronaca oppure sulla contraffazione del racconto autobiografico.
Per queste note positive continuerò a seguire sicuramente il lavoro dell’autrice.
Purtroppo, l’opera nella sua completezza non mi ha soddisfatta del tutto perché alla fine dei conti il racconto in sé, con il suo svolgimento e il suo epilogo, mi è sembrato un po’ inconcludente, come se all’apice della possibilità di significato si sgonfiasse. Interessante il tentativo di aprire sottotrame di personaggi tra loro incatenati, ma anche lì forse è mancata una profondità di significato che si perdeva in troppi personaggi, alcuni dei quali solo leggermente abbozzati.
Non ho letto tutti i dodici candidati allo Strega di quest’anno, ma se quest’opera ce la facesse, anche solo ad arrivare in cinquina, sarei contenta per la ventata di freschezza.

After an eleven (!) year old girl commits suicide, her guilt-ridden teacher disappears into the forest. The villagers go out on an search and when they don't find her they expect the worst.
I haven't read too many Piemontese novels (I can only think of Natalia Ginzburg), and found the atmosphere interesting. The highlight is the nature writing, with beautifully written and detailed descriptions of the forest and the mountains.
The plot I found ultimately slightly unsatisfying (though I understand it is based on a true story) and I also would have expected a deeper exploration of the suicide rather than the teacher.

I haven't read too many Piemontese novels (I can only think of Natalia Ginzburg), and found the atmosphere interesting. The highlight is the nature writing, with beautifully written and detailed descriptions of the forest and the mountains.
The plot I found ultimately slightly unsatisfying (though I understand it is based on a true story) and I also would have expected a deeper exploration of the suicide rather than the teacher.

Una candidatura interessante allo Strega 2023, una trama che promette molto bene, una serie di personaggi interessanti anche se non sempre lontani dagli stereotipi. Eppure, nonostante la prima parte del libro scorra via rapida catturando l'attenzione, dalla metà in poi la storia sembra rallentare e risentire di una certa stanchezza.
Silvia, motore dell'azione iniziale, non compie grandi progressi dopo il riepilogo della vicenda che l'ha portata nel bosco. Tutti coloro che la circondano, con la dovuta eccezione di Martino, non agiscono davvero: assistiamo a uno scorcio delle loro vite di provincia, felici o soffocate dalla marginalità. A risollevare i ritmi della vicenda è sempre Martino, il bambino che vuole sentirsi grande e a suo agio, e si ritrova sulle spalle una responsabilità che davvero sarà da eroe.
Una storia che fa riflettere meno di quanto ci si potrebbe aspettare, ma sa intrattenere e restituire uno spaccato interessante della società di un piccolo paese con il suo piccolo eroe: grazie a lui, alla fine, la maestra potrà davvero tornare dal bosco.

Decisamente il più bel libro letto dall'inizio dell'anno.
Scrittura deliziosa, una storia coinvolgente che fa incontrare due mondi pieni di domande e di paure: quello della maestra che fugge nel bosco perchè sconvolta dal suicidio di una sua alunna e del bambino asmatico, che la soccorre, la ascolta e affronta le sue paure.
Sembra una fiaba sull'affrontare le paure. Eppure sembra un fatto di cronaca con la ricerca del finale 'tutti a casa e stanno bene'.
Ma non è nessuna delle due due cose.
E' un entrare nei mondi altrui, fatti di emozioni che non sappiamo, di frasi taciute, di misteri, di paure e di fatiche.
E tutto questo accomuna grandi e piccoli. Da sempre.

The synopsis promised me depth and emotional power. I did not feel the story delivered.
Its bones certainly were fractured, so it should have hurt more than it did, but I felt the storytelling had a very artificial and distant feel to it. The character dialogue felt especially synthetic. I realize this could have been an issue with the translation, but this is the story I was given, so I can only comment on my experience with the translated work.
I eventually became incredibly frustrated with the teacher. I understand the tremendous impact of guilt mingled with an unconquerable grief led to her actions, and I understand that the author built this story around her own relative’s actions, but I did begin to feel that the teacher was being incredibly selfish. Because the emotional depth was absent, the narrative didn’t offer me any insight that would truly help me feel for the teacher. I was simply upset that she allowed this to go on for so long, especially since (in this fictional version) she had some understanding of the distress she had caused.
I also expected the relationship between the teacher and the student that finds her to develop into something more meaningful; something that would touch my heart. It was just as plain and emotionally void as the rest of the story, though. It was also such a burden to put upon him and, while this was briefly addressed, it didn’t eradicate my view of the teacher’s selfishness.
Ultimately, this was a dry disappointment, and my eyes are dry, too.

Dopo la lettura molto deludente di alcuni finalisti dello Strega dello scorso anno, sono sollevata di aver trovato quest'anno un racconto intenso e verosimile, non caricaturale. Belli i vari punti di vista affrontati, toccante a tratti e umano sempre.

Een meisje van elf pleegt zelfmoord en haar juf verdwijnt. Zo begint de roman. Dan volgt een verhaal dat zweeft tussen droom en werkelijkheid. Een zoeken naar de juf die zelf zoekt naar de zin van het/haar leven. Verleden en heden wisselen af. De natuur, meer bepaald het bos wordt een volwaardig personage. Voor mij was het boek een echte aanrader.

Als ebenso mysteriös wie märchenhaft habe ich den Italienischen Roman „In den Wald“ von Maddalena Vaglio Tanet empfunden.
Eine Lehrerin verschwindet nach dem Suizid einer Schülerin im Wald. Doch was treibt sie zu diesem Rückzug vor ihrem Dorf, ja gar der Gesellschaft?! Könnten es Schuldgefühle und traumatische Erinnerungen sein, die sie zu diesem selbsttherapeutischen Eskapismus veranlassten?!
An einem echten Fall orientiert sich die Autorin und die besagte Lehrerin ist eine Verwandte Tanets, aber sie streut auch fiktionale Elemente in ihre Erzählung. Anhand von Traumbildern und Rückblenden erfahren wir immer mehr Details der Geschehnisse, die sich in den 1970er Jahren in der italienischen Kleinstadt Biella zutrugen.
Die Dorfbewohner Biellas haben sich ein Bild von der Lehrerin gemacht - doch ist sie wirklich die Person, die sie zu sein scheint?! Oder was steckt wirklich hinter der vermeintlichen Außenseiterin? Was hat sie zu verbergen?
Unerwartet wird sie im Wald von dem Jungen Martino entdeckt, der sie fortan mit Lebensmitteln und menschlicher Nähe versorgt.
Tanet wechselt fortführend die Perspektiven, was für mich eher stilistisch und inhaltlich unpassend war, denn ich war vollkommen fixiert auf die Lehrerin Silvio und den Jungen Martino. Besonders die humorvollen und feinfühligen Dialoge und Interaktionen zwischen ihnen habe ich genossen, dafür hat Tanet definitiv ein Talent. Ebenso fand ich es sprachlich besonders gelungen, denn sie erzählt zum einen faktenbasierend, zum anderen poetisch und bildhaft, so dass ich während des Lesens direkt vom Sofa in den piemontesischen Wald abgedriftet bin und wahrhaftig in die Stimmung und Waldatmosphäre eindringen konnte, den Geruch des Waldbodens und Pinien wahrnahm und die Vögel singen hörte.
Während des Lesens habe ich mehrfach an „Walden“ von Henry David Thoreau denken, dass schon seit längerem hier ungelesen rumdümpelt - ich frage mich, ob es Parallelen dazu hat, es hat mir jedenfalls den nötigen Anstoß gegeben, es auf die Leseliste für dieses Jahr zu setzen, um die beiden Werke zeitnah vergleichen zu können.
„In den Wald“ habe ich als Herberge menschlicher Beziehungen wahrgenommen, ein Roman, der Trost spenden kann, wo gebraucht, aber auch animiert dazu, mutig im Leben zu sein!

Silvia è un'insegnante dedita al lavoro, alla scuola e agli alunni. Nella sua classe, tra vari bambini, Giovanna è quella più 'problematica': marina la scuola, non le interessa lo studio, proviene da una famiglia che la picchia spesso e che non la supporta come dovrebbe. Così, quando a seguito dell'ennesima assenza scolastica, Silvia chiama la famiglia per informarla di quest'ultimo evento, Giovanna decide di togliersi la vita a soli dodici anni. Questa tragedia spinge l'insegnante a sviluppare un atroce senso di colpa che la porta a nascondersi nel bosco per interi giorni, destando il panico tra tutti i suoi parenti e conoscenti. Tutti, tranne Martino, un altro alunno che, per un caso fortuito, la scova e, a suo modo, la mantiene in vita per tutte quelle giornate di isolamento.
Questo romanzo riporta gli strani effetti che la psiche umana può subire a seguito di determinati eventi: quelli di una bambina che decide di compiere un gesto così estremo, quella di un'insegnante che si fa travolgere dai rimorsi e perde il lume della ragione, quella di un bimbo che non sa come comportarsi, ecc.
E' un romanzo indubbiamente originale, tratto da un dimenticato fatto realmente accaduto che, però, perde un po' di fascino a causa delle infinite e inutili digressioni sulle vite dei personaggi che vi si avvicendano e che, oggettivamente, non risultano utili ai fini della narrazione.
La scrittura e la suddivisione in brevi capitoli, rendono la lettura di questo testo molto scorrevole e veloce. Purtroppo, a causa di quelle molte dispersioni narrative, non riesco ad apprezzare completamente questo romanzo, anche se la vicenda narrata mi ha affascinato e incuriosito molto.

Ok. This was weird. It starts weird, and never changes from there, but the gist of the story revolves around a little girl, Giovanna, whose life is falling apart. She gets beaten at home… just because…
Her Dad’s in a bad mood, she got a bad grade, the sky was blue… whatever…
So when she starts hanging out with some shady characters and misses school, her teacher is concerned. She thinks she knows what is going on at home, so she calls early in the day, hoping to speak with her Mom. And she does. But the Mom still threatens to tell the Dad. And then Giovanna threatens to kill herself.
It only goes downhill from here…
And the teacher, although I can understand where she’s coming from, well… she needs help!
Again, very, very strange, weird story for me.
3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me.

“Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!”
Io proprio così, ho deciso di trascrivere alcune delle frasi e metafore che più mi hanno colpita(?), diciamo. Può darsi che non siano esatte per quanto riguarda la punteggiatura perché ho ascoltato l’audiolibro e non ho il cartaceo.
”Nel petto di Gemma zampillava qualcosa di simile al buonumore. Avrebbe voluto fare i compiti al posto di Giulia, ma aveva la terza elementare, sapeva leggere solo mormorando i suoni e fare di conto con una tecnica mista, eterodossa, per scomposizione e approssimazione.”
”Una femmina di capriolo ancheggiava tra le piante e chinava il capo per brucare le mele già cadute, rivolgendo verso di loro il posteriore cotonoso.”
”Unghioli ricurvi coronavano le zampe”
”bestia ammansita” (questo verbo lo usa anche in altri contesti)
”Il lungo corpo ammainato nel sonno”
”Il rollare del materasso”
”Lisciò anche i capelli lunghi che svirgolavano in avanti”
”Capelli che spiovevano”
”Le guance gonfie come cornamuse”
Non penso di avere molto altro da dire a parte che lo stile mi ha a tratti fatto perdere il filo, quindi sono tornata indietro per riascoltare alcune parti – vero è che sono una persona che si distrae facilmente. La voce narrante mi è risultata antipatica per via di tutte le figure retoriche e lo stile piuttosto ricercato. Sicuramente lo avrei apprezzato di più se fosse stato più incentrato sullo sviluppo delle personagge, ma essendo un romanzo a più voci e pensieri…

Een boek met een prachtig begin, maar het einde kon me niet bekoren. Dit had vooral te maken met hoe de synopsis van dit boek lijkt te hinten naar een spannend verhaal en interessant contact tussen Martino en juf Silvia. Dit bleek niet veel aan de orde; Martino bezoekt haar maar enkele keren en we lezen vooral hoe de levens van de andere dorpsgenoten verlopen. Een boek dat begon als 5 sterren, maar eindigt als 3.

"Cosa ti tiene in piedi, pensava. Era il senso del dovere. Le avevano insegnato - chi? Tutti, tutto: l'esempio, la religione, le persone amate - che bisognava fare le cose per bene, fare le cose giuste, tirare avanti. "Come va?", "Si tira avanti", una risposta meccanica eppure perfettamente sincera. Tirare avanti valeva come precetto morale, perché la vita è una carretta da trainare, è un lavoro da portare a termine. Quando sei stanca, perseveri. Quando soffri, sopporti. Quando hai voglia di andare, resti. L'operosità come antidoto all'infelicità."
Più che un romanzo, questo libro è stato una finestra aperta - per poco, pochissimo - su una storia vera a cui si sono aggiunti degli elementi narranti indispensabili per raccontare una storia, come un bambino-eroe e altri personaggi secondari. Mi è piaciuto moltissimo anche se avrei voluto di più. Mi sarebbe piaciuto avere una chiusa completa a determinate storie che invece restano sospese nel vuoto.
Più che un romanzo, questo libro è stato una finestra aperta - per poco, pochissimo - su una storia vera a cui si sono aggiunti degli elementi narranti indispensabili per raccontare una storia, come un bambino-eroe e altri personaggi secondari. Mi è piaciuto moltissimo anche se avrei voluto di più. Mi sarebbe piaciuto avere una chiusa completa a determinate storie che invece restano sospese nel vuoto.

Geschichte einer sich aufopfernden Lehrerin
An dem Tag, als der Tod ihrer Lieblingsschülerin bekannt wird, erscheint die Lehrerin Silvia nicht in der Schule. Während sie im Wald verschwindet, suchen die Menschen von Biella nach ihr. Aber Silvia, geplagt von Schuldgefühlen, will nicht gefunden werden. Doch dann steht plötzlich ein Schüler ihrer Schule vor ihr und wird durch seine Entdeckung in ein Dilemma gestürzt. Soll er die Suchenden zur Lehrerin führen oder ihren Aufenthaltsort für sich behalten? Je länger Silvia verschwunden bleibt, desto schwieriger wird der Zwiespalt. Währenddessen driftet Silvia immer weiter in ihre Erinnerungen ab.
"In den Wald" erinnert an Elena Ferrantes Figuren der italienischen Mittel- und Unterschicht. Hier befinden wir uns in den 70er Jahren in der Region Piemont. Die ziemlich archaisch anmutende Gesellschaft wirkt wie aus der Zeit gefallen. Während in den Metropolen der Welt die Moderne um sich greift, kämpfen die Einwohner:innen des Piemonts mit den wirtschaftlichen Veränderungen und der Notwendigkeit, vom Viehtrieb in den Bergen zur Fabrikarbeit in den umliegenden Städten zu wechseln. Gerade die Männer scheinen mit ihrer Veränderung zu hadern und nicht wenige lassen das an ihrer Familie aus, was auch Silvias Lieblingsschülerin zu spüren bekommt. In diesem Roman wird den verschiedenen Familiengeschichten und -konstellationen nachgespürt. Die Gemeinschaft bestimmt immer noch über den Platz der einzelnen Personen. So geben sich die Bewohner:innen vordergründig besorgt um Silvia, doch schnell wird Silvia auch Unangepasstheit und Außenseitertum zugeschrieben und ihre Absichten bei den Kindern hinterfragt.
Vom Klappentext und der Ankündigung her hatte ich mir mehr Naturszenen erhofft. Während Silvia vor Trauer und Schock im Wald verwahrlost, rückt der Wald zwar immer näher, aber Silvia interagiert wenig mit ihm oder der Landschaft. Der Wald ist ihr Rückzugsort und Kulisse, aber wenig mehr. Im Zentrum steht das schwierige Leben in einer italienischen Kleinstadt in den 1970ern. Das sollte man vor dem Lesen wissen, dann eröffnet sich einem ein interessanter Einblick in eine Gemeinde, die mit den fortschreitenden Entwicklungen zu kämpfen hat und eine Lehrerin, die an ihrer Aufopferung für ihre Schüler:innen zu zerbrechen droht.
An dem Tag, als der Tod ihrer Lieblingsschülerin bekannt wird, erscheint die Lehrerin Silvia nicht in der Schule. Während sie im Wald verschwindet, suchen die Menschen von Biella nach ihr. Aber Silvia, geplagt von Schuldgefühlen, will nicht gefunden werden. Doch dann steht plötzlich ein Schüler ihrer Schule vor ihr und wird durch seine Entdeckung in ein Dilemma gestürzt. Soll er die Suchenden zur Lehrerin führen oder ihren Aufenthaltsort für sich behalten? Je länger Silvia verschwunden bleibt, desto schwieriger wird der Zwiespalt. Währenddessen driftet Silvia immer weiter in ihre Erinnerungen ab.
"In den Wald" erinnert an Elena Ferrantes Figuren der italienischen Mittel- und Unterschicht. Hier befinden wir uns in den 70er Jahren in der Region Piemont. Die ziemlich archaisch anmutende Gesellschaft wirkt wie aus der Zeit gefallen. Während in den Metropolen der Welt die Moderne um sich greift, kämpfen die Einwohner:innen des Piemonts mit den wirtschaftlichen Veränderungen und der Notwendigkeit, vom Viehtrieb in den Bergen zur Fabrikarbeit in den umliegenden Städten zu wechseln. Gerade die Männer scheinen mit ihrer Veränderung zu hadern und nicht wenige lassen das an ihrer Familie aus, was auch Silvias Lieblingsschülerin zu spüren bekommt. In diesem Roman wird den verschiedenen Familiengeschichten und -konstellationen nachgespürt. Die Gemeinschaft bestimmt immer noch über den Platz der einzelnen Personen. So geben sich die Bewohner:innen vordergründig besorgt um Silvia, doch schnell wird Silvia auch Unangepasstheit und Außenseitertum zugeschrieben und ihre Absichten bei den Kindern hinterfragt.
Vom Klappentext und der Ankündigung her hatte ich mir mehr Naturszenen erhofft. Während Silvia vor Trauer und Schock im Wald verwahrlost, rückt der Wald zwar immer näher, aber Silvia interagiert wenig mit ihm oder der Landschaft. Der Wald ist ihr Rückzugsort und Kulisse, aber wenig mehr. Im Zentrum steht das schwierige Leben in einer italienischen Kleinstadt in den 1970ern. Oh, ecco...che bello. Questo, da quel che leggo in giro, mi sembra proprio essere sullo stampo di "Olive Kitteridge" di E. Strout.
L'inizio promette abbastanza bene, dai e effettivamente tante storie si dipanano a raggiera da quella centrale.
Mmmh, ma se ne dipanano tantine e un poco senza nesso, e non si chiudono, non si spiegano, restano lì a ali tarpate, sospese.
Aspetta, i personaggi? Saranno ben caratterizzati, tutto sarà puntato su di loro, saranno il fulcro...ecco, no, no forse meglio rivolgersi allo stile.
Sì, lo stile è fondamentale in un libro, per me la cosa più importante...vediamolo:
"[...]ha le guance gonfie come cornamuse",
"[...]una femmina di capriolo ancheggiava [...]con il posteriore cotonoso",
"[...]mentre il materasso rollava", "a secco di affetto come un tonfo di riccio sulle lamiere",
"e poteva distinguere il piccante degli aghi di pino dalla putredine caramellata delle foglie morte". Insomma un putiferio di aggettivi, spesso incoerenti, tanti aggettivi, decine di aggettivi, due-tre-cinque per nome, e le similitudini e le metafore e le ridondanze.

Received as a birthday present, I expected reading the back cover to be a detective novel but the summary is really misleading. It is actually a glimpse into the lives of villagers shaken by tragedy. Indeed, we are in the 1970s, in the heart of a small Italian village where a young girl commits suicide. Her teacher, shocked by the news and feeling responsible, decides to flee into the woods.
The novel addresses issues of family (traditional but also the one that is about to change because the divorce law is not far off), love, the loss of a loved one, or even suicide and bullying. I really appreciated the author's style, simple, with short chapters without ever falling into pathos. A captivating story, written in an intimate tone, with lively and detailed descriptions, especially that of nature and this dense and wild forest.
This is a novel that I really enjoyed, unexpected but that I loved. The author's thanks and notes bring an extra touch, which allows readers to understand how this novel was born, and which makes it even more incredible when we know that the author was inspired by a true story that affected her own family.
Too bad this novel is not better known because it is really worth the detour and I sincerely hope that other novels by Maddalena Vaglio Tanet will be translated into French soon because she is an author to follow.

Um livro triste, duro, melancólico, poético.
Inspirado numa história real, de uma familiar da autora.
“Espero que não tenha enlouquecido com a dor…”
Giovanna tem 11 anos e suicida-se. Sílvia, sua professora sente-se culpada porque acha que foi devido a um telefonema seu para os pais de Giovanna que originou aquela decisão.
Sílvia foge para o bosque quando sabe o que aconteceu, apenas quer a solidão para lidar com a sua culpa, com a sua dor.
Tem uma aldeia inteira à sua procura, mas apenas Martino a encontra.
E aqui vamos ver a relação ser invertida, uma criança que vai cuidar de um adulto.
Será Martino capaz de esconder o segredo de Sílvia e trazê-la de volta à vida?!
Por vezes demasiado descritivo, mas com uma escrita muito bonita. Gostava de ter visto mais da ligação Sílvia-Martino, acho que podia ter sido mais explorada mas sendo esta uma história real, por parte da Silvia, percebo.

Aangrijpend verslag van de schokgolven die door een Piemontees dorp gaan na de zelfmoord van een tiener en de daarop volgende verdwijning van een schooljuffrouw. Het verhaal dat in de jaren zeventig speelt is gebaseerd op waar gebeurde feiten die Maddalena Vaglio Tanet (° Biella 1985) als kind steeds weer heeft horen vertellen. Naast de traumatische gebeurtenissen schuift geleidelijk aan een schooljongen naar het centrum van het verhaal die met de nek wordt aangekeken omdat hij nieuw is en uit Turijn komt en dus niet in de dorpse mentaliteit past maar misschien net daarom onafhankelijker en opmerkzamer is en op een bepaald ogenblik voor een onmogelijk dilemma wordt geplaatst. Tanet bouwt haar relaas gestaag op, telkens een personage of een gebeurtenis toevoegend , tot het hele dorp in beeld is en de levens hun gang gaan en trachten om te gaan met nauwelijks te bevatten gebeurtenissen die langzaam aan olifanten in de kamers worden. Ballade van het bos (Tornare dal Bosco) werd in 2024 genomineerd voor de Premio Strega wat voor een debuut hoogst uitzonderlijk is. Met Tanet heeft de Italiaanse literatuur er een interessante stem bij .

Stavolta mi risulta un po' difficile scrivere una recensione di questo libro. Se dovessi dare un giudizio "di pancia" non mi ha convinto. La storia è bella e scorrevole. Martino e Silvia, ma anche Anselmo, Giulia, suor Annangela sono tutti personaggi ben delineati. Manca qualcosa, anche nell'evidenziare questo legame con la terra, questo tornare al bosco per rifugiarsi e perdersi, per poi tornare da esso, c'è un vuoto che non sono riuscita a colmare.
