Wicked Defenders is a series of mafia adjacent standalone romances, containing morally grey heroes that are sweet caregivers to those they love but don’t hold back on anyone else. These stories include dark themes and tragic scenes, but each book ends with an HEA.
Amber Warden’s stories often have characters overcoming tragic pasts or current hardships and may include situations that not everyone would like to read. Content notes are provided in the look inside to help you decide if this story is for you.
Amber Warden started reading romance before she probably should have. Before long, she was anticipating the steamy scenes and skipping to the good parts. She loves dreaming up new book boyfriends and lives out her fantasies in her stories.
Her main hope is for those reading to take away the feeling that they are more than enough for anyone.
When she's not writing, she's reading shoujo manga, playing otome games, and listening to her favorite J-rock music.
If you like your heroes slightly unhinged, and 100% obsessive over the fmc, this is for you.

This is a Dark Mafia Romance, and this is the first book in the Wicked Defenders series. This type of book is not for everyone, and there are a ton of things that could upset readers. Please check trigger warnings before picking up this book. This book took me a little bit to get pulled into the story, but once I was pulled into the story I was all in. I really enjoyed the characters. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.
From the outside looking in, the Ashford family looked like the perfect family. Hannah the beautiful wife, the two small children, and Colin, a successful lawyer husband. But it was all for show. The reality was a grim, hellish world with a terrified wife and children. Hannah and her kids were living in an abusive, highly controlled environment where all three were afraid of doing something wrong, especially when the rules were constantly changing to suit the mood of Colin Ashford, resulting in multiple punishments. Hannah was not allowed to interact with her children, and the children were being raised by the nanny, who was openly sleeping with Colin.
Diego is a mafia hitman sent to surveil Colin Ashford for a client. Diego immediately knows that there is something sinister going on in the house, and eventually witnesses the atrocities Colin inflicts on Hannah. Diego becomes obsessed with Hannah, makes himself known to her, and eventually does something about their living conditions. The rest of the story follows how Diego, Hannah and the children slowly become a family. It was beautiful how the four of them came to life, blossoming and thriving, together.
The main characters are multi-layered and intense, with supporting characters that add depth to the story. Ramiro was downright scary! Diego’s interactions with the children tugged at my heartstrings. I understand that not all readers will agree with me, but I found this book to be poignantly beautiful in how two tortured souls, Diego and Hannah, find each other, and come to life together. They were just existing before, now they are living. It is a dark and tragic story, sometimes scary, sometimes sweet, sometimes spicy, and definitely angsty and emotional. The plot was well-written and edited, grabbing your attention from the first to last page. While it was a brutal topic, it was still overall enjoyable to read, and I definitely recommend this book.

I loved Diego. Chapter one I was a bit worried but after that everything he said I forgot about. He was so down for Hannah. Then poor sweet sweet Hannah she went through so much and stayed strong for her babies. Diego jumped in and took care of all of them. He saved all of them. I loved the other side characters. The plot was fantastic and I was so happy with the ending.

HIDDEN WHILE IN SIGHT is a dark romance centered around Diego our Hero who works for the cartel. His job is to watch people and dig up the dirt for their clients, but one job will end up changing his life and finding him his new obsession.
This was a little unhinged, a tad dark and totally disturbing with what Hannah the heroine endures at the hands of her husband (check trigger warnings). And while Diego isn't your typical white knight and was what some would call unhealthy obsessed, I loved how he loves Hannah and her kids. Who needs normal when you have a man willing to do anything for the ones he calls mine? I liked the second half of this book more than the first but that was because we get to see more interaction with Diego and the kids which was pretty adorable. I also liked Diego's friend Ramiro and hope he gets his own book as well. 3.5 Stars!
Thanks to Rain for the recommendation. Make sure to check out her review!
I feel a little bad about just giving two stars, and perhaps some of why I'm rating it so low is on me, but I do need to give an honest review. I've read other books by this author and liked them well enough, so when I was given an opportunity to read this ARC, I took it. Full disclosure: I'm not a fan of books with morally gray heroes and even less into books with mafia undertones. I probably should have avoided this book. But again, I've read other books by this author and liked them, so I decided to give it a chance.
The book is unique for the genre because it's told entirely from the male main character's third person point of view. We never get inside Hannah's head, and it was therefore hard to get to know her. She came across more like a secondary character. I liked and rooted for her, but I couldn't quite find myself standing up and cheering.
We know a lot more about Diego because we're inside his head. He clearly had a really, really bad upbringing and not such a great early adulthood. He's definitely a violent man. But he also comes across as a teddy bear, gentle with "good" people. I would never tolerate that of a guy in real life, but in booklandia, I'm a little more flexible.
And that's where another problem comes in: There's not much of a plot here. Horrible violence (really, read the content warnings) followed by illicit sexy time (which comes off more raunchy than romantic) followed by more violence followed by more sexy time. Rinse, repeat. None of the violence is connected apart from it happening due to Diego's job. I was waiting for... more? Something? Anything?
At least two more books are being set up here; perhaps that's the main purpose of this book? I think I'll be giving them a pass. But if you like morally gray softies, gentle but traumatized heroines, and descriptive (borderline crass) intimate scenes, don't hesitate to pick this book up.
I received an ARC of this book for free from the author and BookSirens. I'm writing this review voluntarily, and it reflects my honest opinion. Thanks!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.
This is a dark Mafia romance. I have to say this is a book that you will want to heed the warnings in the beginning of the book. This book will contain triggers for some readers. This is the story of Diego. He is in the cartel and his main job is to dig up dirt on anyone and anything so that they can keep their business running as smoothly as possible. His job is always interesting and he loves what he does. But, now he is assigned to watch a family. A family that lives like kings. These people have it all. Things that someone from the streets would never have. However, their perfect life might not be as perfect as it seemed in the beginning as Diego began to notice things about the family. Colin who is a lawyer along with his wife Hannah and his children seem to live the most perfect life ever. However, the lawyer husband is making sure that people see what he wants them to see so they don't know the hell that they really live in. What Diego witnesses will turn your stomach. There are so many things wrong with this family all thinks to the dad. The more Diego learns about Hannah the more he knows that she would be perfect for him. But more than that he can't let that family live like they are living now. Will he be able to save Hannah and her children and give them the life that they deserve? You have to read this book and find out. I thought that it was really good. It took me a while to get into this story. If you find yourself the same way, don't lay this book down. I promise you that once it takes off it really takes off and you will be on the edge of your seat many times.
OMG, Hidden While In Sight by Amber Warden is seriously one of the most intense books I’ve ever read! I couldn’t put it down. It’s the first book in the Wicked Defenders series, and if this is how it starts, I’m so ready for the rest!
The story is about Hannah, who’s stuck in this totally messed up marriage with Colin, who seems like the perfect guy on the outside but is actually a complete monster behind closed doors. Honestly, I felt so bad for Hannah and her kids. The way Colin treats them is horrifying, and it made me so angry!
Then there’s Diego. He’s a mafia hitman who’s supposed to be spying on Colin, but instead, he ends up noticing what’s going on in the house. At first, he’s just watching, but then he becomes obsessed with saving Hannah and her kids. And let me tell you, their relationship is EVERYTHING. The way Diego steps in and helps them out is just so amazing and heartwarming. I loved seeing how he connected with the kids, too—it made me tear up.
The book is super fast-paced, and I was hooked from the very first chapter. The writing is so vivid that I could actually picture everything happening, which made it even more intense. Yes, the story is dark and deals with some heavy stuff like abuse, but it’s also got these sweet moments that balance it out. The way Diego and Hannah grow in their relationship is just beautiful. It’s like they’re both finding a way actually to live instead of just surviving.
Hidden While In Sight is a rollercoaster of emotions, with everything from fear and anger to love and hope. If you like dark romances with a mix of suspense, intensity, and touching moments, you NEED to read this book.

Hidden While in Sight is the first book in the Wicked Defenders series by Amber Warden. It is a steamy standalone mafia-esque romance centered around Hannah and Diego.
includes: 📌morally ambiguous hero 📌obsessive hero with stalker vibes 📌hurt/comfort 📌voyeur 📌period sex 📌his POV only
Diego and his surveillance team are hired to gather evidence against Hannah's husband, but he becomes captivated by Hannah herself. After witnessing the abuse she endures at the hands of her husband, he is determined to rescue her and her two young children. Amber Warden pens a beautiful love story about hope, encouragement, and tender adoration.
It was so satisfying to witness Hannah and Diego overcome their many challenges to find happiness. However, this story does contain difficult situations that may not be for every reader, and I appreciated the author's inclusion of content notes.
I'm looking forward to the next book in this series!

Diego touched the photo on the desk. Everyone in the photo was smiling and dressed to perfection. Except the wife. She was the only one not smiling. Despite his mission, she intrigued him. Why wasn't she smiling? There was nothing special about her. She was almost plain-looking, but he couldn't look away.
Setting up the last of his hidden cameras, he left without a trace. The cartel wanted to know what the lawyer was hiding, and it was his job to supply them with the blackmail material they needed. But looking at the massive home and the family photos, he wasn't looking forward to watching the life of a boring family.
But there was something about the blank look on her face that kept bugging him.
I loved this story! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. Diego is an assassin for the mafia. Hannah is the wife of a successful attorney. But not everything is as it seems in the life of this perfect family.
This book is action-packed from start to finish. This is a dark mafia romance and there may be some triggers for those who don't read this genre. Diego is no one's hero. He is an assassin and a voyeur with dark appetites, but he is the perfect person to save Hannah.
This is the first time I have read anything by this author, but I look forward to reading more in the future. Highly recommend!
How easy it is to judge people based on the façade they present to the world; we can never know what goes on behind closed doors. I don’t know how Hannah survived all those years with her husband, trapped by her isolation and the need to protect her children. Colin was pretty diabolical and the abuse she suffered at his hands was traumatic, so please be aware of the trigger warnings. Hired to find dirt on Hannah’s husband, Diego watches the family’s life unfold and soon finds holes in their seeming perfection. Perhaps it was the echoes of his own past that sparked Diego’s growing obsession with Hannah and her children, yet when his task was over, he was prepared to walk away. It was pure luck that he was there at that critical moment. While the whole book is told from Diego’s POV, I admit I was often dying to know what Hannah was thinking. I think it would have been a more satisfying read to get both their perspectives. Despite his misgivings, I loved how Diego bonded with Hannah’s children and how Emma loved to nap while resting on his chest. Ironically, the man who admitted to having blood on his hands gave Hannah more love and compassion than she’d ever experienced in her life. This novel left me in my feels and definitely a happily ever after worth all the pain the two suffered through. I love how obsessive the MMC is in regard to the FMC and her kids. It would have not hit the same if he only cared about the FMC. The antagonist definitely deserved more in my opinion however that was the neatest way to handle things. 😉 The novel was suspenseful in the way of never knowing 100% what the FMC was thinking. You mainly got all of Diego’s emotions which made the story more heartfelt especially when you can tell he had made assumptions and had to work through those chapter by chapter depending on wild events by the hand of the antagonist. I will say PLEASE READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS. Especially if abuse if ANY kind is an issue for you. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who is into dark romance with stalker vibes and an OTT obsessive MMC who only wants what is best for the FMC no matter the cost! Plot ✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️ Spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Romance 💘💘💘💘💘 Stalker Vibes 😈😈😈😈😈.

I will always be a mafia girlie and jumped at the chance to read "Hidden While In Sight" by Amber (who also happened to be a "new to me" author.
I read a TON of mafia books and I really liked that with Amber's writing style, she wrote this storyline mostly in Diego's point of view. I would have liked a bit more background history about him (just a personal preference), but I will say that he was a great MMC. It wasn't a super in-depth mafia read, but kind of light on the mafia troupe, mostly focused on the storyline with plot twists and the chemistry between Diego and Hannah. I personally couldn't connect with Hannah, something about her that I really couldn't put my finger on, but did really connect more with Diego and all that he's been through, how he was a bit rough at first personality wise, but Hannah brought out a whole other side to him that wasn't there in the beginning. His character growth was some of the best growth in an MMC I've seen in a while and is partly why I rated this book 4 stars. Good writing style with Amber and I enjoyed this book. Would recommend and read other books by her in the future.
If you love morally grey characters like Deigo with a touch her and die attitude towards Hannah, you’re going to love this. Deigo goes from being a kid on the streets, to being a hit man for the mafia, to doing security work for even greyer characters, if you want to bribe someone Ramino and his guys will find it for you, which is how Deigo meets Hannah. Deigo is sent to find dirt on her husband, Hannah’s husband is abusive towards his family, makes them starve, and as cliche as it is screwing the nanny. There is a lot of questionable consent in this book with Hannah and her husband, Deigo gets to see all of this, through his work, but he starts to crave her, he wants to own her, and once she gives him a taste he can’t get enough. There is a HEA.
Warning there are a lot of triggers in this book. Troupe: Stalker Morally grey character Touch her and die Forced proximity Spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Triggers: Spousal abuse Rape Questionable consent Battered woman Postnatal depression written off page Emotional mental abuse written off page Child sexual abuse written off page Forced vomiting Murder Blood 🩸 Child drowning written off page
Be prepared for a unique take on the current romance style. This story is told strictly from the MMC POV and I loved it.
Diego (MMC) is hired to watch/spy on a man and his family the Cartel wants dirt on and quickly finds himself engrossed in the lives of the man’s wife and kids.
His first impression of Hannah was not pleasant. He felt she was unattractive, cold and a typical rich man’s wife. However, the more he watches the more he sees his first impression is wrong. He watches a man who demands strict obedience, controls the amount of food his wife eats, is physically abusive and SA her regularly. He discovers she is being kept away from her children and her husband is also having an affair with the nanny. This spy mission has now become a rescue mission as he finds himself drawn more and more to Hannah.
This was a great story. The plot moves a fluid pace, and your heart will break for Hannah and her children. The chemistry between Hannah and Diego is hot and the trust being built between them, and her children was fantastic to watch.
I cannot wait to see what she has coming out next.
This book was honestly not for me but it may be for others. It was hard for me to get into it. The book was written solely in Diego’s third person pov.
Diego’s job is to find something on Colin Ashford, so he spends night and day surveilling the family, especially Colin’s wife, Hannah. The more he watches the family the more he obsesses over Hannah and the kids.
I wish this book was also written in Hannah’s pov. I would have loved to get in her head and because we didn’t get the chance to, I felt like she was a bit dull. But at the same time, I can see why she had to numb herself, to protect herself and the kids. There are technically bonus chapters written in Hannah’s pov on the author’s website, I just wish it was embedded in the story.
I honestly couldn’t connect with either characters.I loved Diego for caring for the Hannah and the family but… I just didn’t love him. It also felt unnatural whenever he called her mami. I also felt like the story dragged on a bit longer than it should have.

I enjoyed Diego! He kinda worked as a sort of criminal vigilante? He worked for the cartel and he was the person who collected blackmail against others for clients. On one such mission he ends up spying on a man and his family. That’s where he sees Hannah for the first time and although at first he thinks she’s frigid and dull, he learns that’s there more to her than that. Angry enough at her and her children’s treatment he continues to watch them and eventually it evolves to more.
I likes this book for what it was. There were lulls that I found myself wanting the story to speed up a bit hence four stars instead of five. If you’re sensitive to child neglect and spousal abuse maybe skip this one. But for a love story based on a strange sort of lust it was very good. Just don’t expect Diego to be a good guy because he isn’t. He just has a terrible past and a moral code. The spice was good though! He was so desperate for her but also unwilling to hurt her.
Also I never wanna read “Cherry tits” again.
It was said a bit too often for my tastes.

Diego works for Ramiro and together they spy on people for a living. Diego had a really hard past and hardly gets close nor have relationships and does feelings.
Enter this new job where he got to spy on Colin Ashford and his wife, and their two children. His target was Colin. He thought they were nothing but rich spoiled brats.
He thought wrong. The more he spied on them, the more he realized something was seriously wrong with Hannah and her two children.
He soon made it his mission to save them from Colin. Colin was an abusive prick who constantly cheat with the nanny as punishment to Hannah.
Somehow, Colin is gone from the picture and Diego fights to keep Hannah and the two kids. I love how he was attentive to her and her needs. I love how he helped her come out of her shell and help her overcome her fears. I love how he help her grow to become stronger.
This story really was a good story of how a man saved a woman from an abusive relationship and help her grow.

This book was entertaining and I loved Diego's obsession for Hannah and her kids. I felt for the struggle that Hannah went through with her husband. That dude was a total asshole. But I wish we got more of Diego's background. It felt like he kept getting little pieces of his memory back with no real purpose to it. The side characters like Ramiro and Naz were interesting and I would love to see more of them.
That being said, this book felt like a teenager wrote it. Some of the words used gave me the ick. And there were a lot of holes in the story. It also felt repetitive in his obsession with little progression. The ending also felt a little unsatisfying.
Diego is sent to watch the Ashford family in hopes to catch some dirt on the husband for a client. He is becomes increasingly obsessed with the wife and kids. He starts seeing some of the abuse take place and is struggling to keep himself in check while also becoming increasingly possessive of "his family".

Diego and his surveillance team are hired to spy and gather evidence against Colin Ashford but while doing this he becomes enthralled with his wife Hannah. After witnessing abuse by the hands of her husband Diego is determined to get in there and rescue her and her family ( she has two young children )
I loved how the two MCS found each other and I did feel it was a bit slow moving at the beginning but it didn't take long for it to kick in and when it did...boy did I devour this in one day!!! I loved reading how they both overcame their fears and challenges to find happiness together. Please be aware there are plenty of triggers in this book and they are stated at the beginning of the book......they include Domestic Abuse, murder, past SA, Non-Con/rape, anorexia and much more so please please don't go into this blind. This was a fantastic story and I really enjoyed it and can't wait to read the next two in the series and read about the other men especially Ramiro....I think I'm gonna like him lol. This is my first book by Amber Warden and I can't wait to read more.
I liked it. I would have liked a bit more background on both characters and I got a bit confused as to what role Diego was playing because I thought he was sicario, unless I misunderstood, but he was moreso a surveillance spy. The one thing the book was missing to me was the mfc pov, as it was all told in the mmc pov, I guess I'm used to the dual pov books. I liked it from his, it's different vs always being the heroine, but I still missed knowing what she was thinking so I was glad the author had the extended chapters to get that. I would have liked a couple more added, like the incident to explain what happened to her face, and also after her husband's arrest when she fired the nanny, although I doubt it was as petty and satisfying as I'd like. Overall, I enjoyed the read and want to read about the other guys I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The writing and story is really good. I have mixed feelings on the book, but that’s on me and not the writing at all.
This is written in third person and only one POV (just the MMC). Not my normal jam but I think it worked well for me because I’m not sure I would have liked the FMC at all if I had her POV. Again though, that’s on me and not the writing.
This also isn’t your usual instant attraction type story, the MMC was pretty mean with his thoughts in the beginning about the FMC, even going as far to call her ugly. Getting past that in the beginning though, the MMC is pretty great.
While the triggers list that there is mentions of God and Bible reading, I didn’t realize the FMC was going to be so religious, and that’s where my mixed feelings come in. So there’s the warning for you.
Check your triggers on this one, it is pretty dark.
The spice was pretty basic, so if you’re looking for kink, this isn’t the book for you.
This was SO good! This is the first book I've read from Amber and I plan on reading more. This is written in third person, but I don't mind that. It is also only Diego's POV, but I'd prefer that over strictly FMC POV. I need to read what the MMC is thinking and feeling. The additional small book of Hannah's thoughts was a nice addition though. These two were perfect for each other. Diego was absolutely obsessed with her and I love to read about a man obsessed. He saved her from her brutal marriage and showed her unconditional love, worship and devotion. He was devoted to making her happy. He loved her children too. It was hard to read the abuse she went through with her husband. His infidelity as well. But all of that just shined a light even more on how good Diego was to her. And now I really want to read Naz and Ramiro's books.

Hidden While In Sight (Wicked Defenders) by Amber Warden. This is a new author for me and as I was reading this story, I kept wondering about how I’ve managed to miss out on her work. I thought the writing style was good, she creates a story that makes you feel a connection to the characters and their plight. Diego was there to find dirt and boy did he but not quite what he was expecting. Hannah was living in a nightmare; she was a stronger person than I could ever imagine being. It is crazy what you will do for the love of your children. Diego becomes fixated on her, her living situation, and what is really going on in this perfect house. It’s been a long time since I’ve immersed myself in a book, but this one just grabbed on and wouldn’t let go. The intensity, darkness, and emotion kept me engaged and entertained. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I loved her previous series so continued onto the Wicked Defenders Series and its worth a read.
It's a bit different to the usual Mafia trope because although Diego grew up with the Cartel and sort of belonged to them it was more a cyber-security type of trope.
While there were some times where you wanted to hear from Hannah we do get extra scenes from her POV. And because Diego watches people for a living he is great at interpreting body language and reading people so you don't really miss not having both POV.
The scenes are beautiful, romantic and respectful. The way Amber gradually gave Hannah her power back sexually but also the way that Diego was as a lover made it a great read.
I would've liked a few more scenes with Connor & Diego just because there was a far bit written about Emma and her cuddles.

I would consider this book very light on the mafia and light on the dark romance compared to other stories I’ve read. This story is very heavy on DV and traumatic childhood events/memories, so please, review the content warnings prior to starting.
The story is written in third person narrator style. This is very different from what I’m used to, and I thought this would bother me, but it was so well done, I was here for it.
I appreciated the gentle care the author took in writing about Hannah’s experiences and how thoughtful, caring and insightful Diego is, especially when all he wants is to make sure Hannah and her kids are protected and taken care of.
I look forward to reading the rest of this series - we are introduced to Naz, and you know there’s a story there!! Can’t wait!
Diego’s job for the cartel is to dig up information on anyone, and he and his team are assigned to watch a lawyer for information to extort him with. A first appearance everything seems to be perfect, Hannah is the perfect wife, with her two children being looked after by a nanny, but the more he watchers he sees things are not what they appear. When Diego sees something going on, he rushed to Hannah and the children’s aid, but will he get there in time? This is a well written action packed, emotionally charged story, with obsession, challenges, extortion, danger, intrigue, and suspense, which leads to an unpredictable, twisted, tragic, haunting, and spicy dark mafia romance. Be aware of the trigger warning due to the sensitive content!! I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
This book is without a doubt one of my favorites from Amber Warden!!! Diego and Hannah have physical, emotional, and mental scars from abuse caused by people who should have loved them and taken care of them. I felt the sadness, the fear, and the hopelessness that Hannah endured and then the battle between sheer disbelief and faith that her nightmare was over.
Diego is a great character: patient, observant, and capable of true caring and compassion that seems at odds with his childhood and his profession. It’s a supremely poignant and powerful story of a relationship built from the bottom and the feelings Amber Warden evokes are awe inspiring!! I loved it and can’t wait for Ram and Naz’s stories!!.
