Nirmal Verma
126 books117 followersA well-known name in Hindi literature, Nirmal Verma is known mainly for his fictional works. Born on April 3, 1929, he obtained a M.A. in history from Delhi University. He studied Czech at the Oriental Institute in Prague, and has been a Fellow with the International Institute for Asian Studies. Nirmal Verma is a recipient of India's highest literary award, the Jnanpith, and his short stories Kavve aur kala pani won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1985. Some of his more popular novels are Antim aranya, Rat ka riportar, Ek Chithra Sukh, and Lal tin ki chat.
Vedina, his first novel, is set in Prague, Czechoslavakia. Like all his works, it is rich in symbolism with a style that is simple yet sophisticated. As one of the most important prose Hindi writers of our times, Nirmal Verma's creativity extends to the description and travel to places in Europe especially on Czechoslovakia and literary criticism. Among his nonfiction writings is Kal ka jokhim an investigation of the Indic arts in the 20th century. His diary, Dhundh se uthati dhun, describes his life in detail while addressing issues related to Hindi literature. His works have been widely translated into English and Gujarati.

वे दिन निर्मल वर्मा की दूसरी किताब थी जो मैंने पढ़ी। मैं भी प्राग में दो साल रहा हूं, और इसलिए ये किताब थोड़ी खास हो गई क्योंकि निर्मल का चित्रण इतना "विविड" है, कि हर उस जगह को आप महसूस कर सकते हैं। आज जब मैं प्राग में नहीं हूं, ये किताब मुझमें फिर से वहां जाकर इस सारी जगहों को देखने की चाह जगाती है।
प्राग अपने आपमें एक जादुई शहर है। और पता नहीं क्यों, वहां बनने वाले रिश्ते भी जादुई से ही लगते हैं। एक दूसरी सभ्यता में जाकर वहां के लोगों से आत्मीय होने के बाद भी एक दूरी जो बनी रह जाती है, उसका अनुभव शायद सारे प्रवासियों ने कभी न कभी किया होगा। पूरी किताब में एक अकेलापन भरा हुआ है, जोकि एक भीड़ भरे बार में नायिका (अगर उसे कहा जा सकता है तो) के साथ शराब पीने, नाचने और उसके बाद बिस्तर में भी पीछा नहीं छोड़ता। जब रायना कहती है "इट वुडन्ट हेल्प", तो लेखक के साथ-साथ आपको भी पता होता है कि वो सही है।
किताब कई मायनों में एक चिथड़ा सुख की भी याद दिलाती है, क्योंकि इसमें जो भावनाएं दिखती हैं, वही कमोबेश एक चिथड़ा सुख में भी थीं। इसी वजह से शायद बहुत नयापन या अलग नहीं लगा भावनात्मक स्तर पर, लेकिन किताब में वैसे कोई कमी नहीं है। ये किताबें कहीं न कहीं आपको बहुत कुछ सोचने और महसूस करने को मजबूर करती हैं।

Not as good as his masterpiece - 'Antim Aranya'. The story was slow paced and there was more concentration on atmosphere building. Yet some quotes are memorable.

बस यही कहूँगी कि कथानक अचानक से ठहर क्यों जाते हैं!
प्रेम हो या ज़िन्दगी, चलती रहनी चाहिए…मगर शीर्षक के अनुसार ये उन दिनों की याद है, जिन्हें लेखक ने कभी बेहद शिद्दत के साथ किसी परदेशी स्त्री को प्राग शहर घुमाते हुए महसूस किया।
क्योट लायक बहुत कुछ है- मतलब बहुत कुछ।
निर्मल वर्मा को पढ़ने का सजेशन देने वाले मित्र का धन्यवाद, तिस पर ये मीठा उपन्यास सब से पहले चुनने का आग्रह करने का भी आभार।
पढ़कर पढ़ने लायक होने जैसा फील आया पहली बार।

हृदय स्पर्शी
I regret that I had not read Nirmal Verma earlier. He is as great as renowned foreign writers of Murakami, Milan Kundera, Coelho ilk. This novel is very touchy and describes the emotions of liking, longing , desire and separation. A beautiful naration of development of a relationship between an indian student working as part time interpreter to an Austrian tourist in the city of Prague. A must read to know how great has been written in Hindi language.

Last weekend I was deep in my thoughts, thanks to Days of Longing by Nirmal K Verma, a translated version of ''Ve Din'' by the same author, and translator as Krishna Baldev Vaid. Revolving around a person who is away from home in a foreign country, who meets someone so special that when the story ends, you are not able to decide whether Days of Longing was a happy book or a sad book?
The question kept creeping back in my mind whether this is a happy book or a sad book, and honestly, I am still in two minds. But one thing is for sure that this is one of the most moving works I have recently come across! Depending on one's perspective, this book may seem to some readers as a sad story disguised as something nice or just a slice of life tale from the protagonist.
An Indian student is living in Prague from last two years and is spending Christmas holidays away from home. He is surrounded by other foreign students, Than Thun (TT) from Burma, Franz from Germany who is studying cinematography but is going nowhere with his choice and his eccentric girlfriend, Maria who is not able to get her visa so that she can leave Prague with Franz.
Much of their time is spent roaming around streets of Prague, drinking vodka or beer or sherry, go without hot water for days and no sleep more than a couple of hours, and constantly joking about living in “the city of empty pockets and full bladders” (because there are very few public urinals).
Now apart from these common characteristics and living style of an immigrant student, what you don't see in Days of Longing is the typical pining for home feeling. There is no background story to the protagonist's character, no feelings for the country and no late nights crying and desiring for mother's touch. And this was a pleasant surprise for me because I was under the impression that there might be some Indian immigrant element in the story.
The only mention of home comes while conversing with TT, “We had left home at a stage when our childhood connections had been cut off and we hadn’t yet forged adult links with people and places,” he tells us, speaking of himself and TT, “Our homes seemed unreal from afar, like someone else’s homes, alien memories. They seemed meaningless, even ridiculous.”
Turn in the story comes when protagonist lands a temporary job as a translator for an Austrian woman Raina and her little son. Indy, our protagonist grows closer to Raina, and in three days time goes through a roller coaster of emotions. From hesitance to doubt, intense longing and jealousy built on the knowledge that Raina's previous visit to Prague was with her now estranged husband, Jacques and she may be trying to rekindle the lost love by going through same spots she visited last time with him.
Very aptly Indy describes the feeling. “It bothered me,” he says, “I wanted her to look at everything for the first time. But she seemed to be keen about revisiting places she had already seen.” And then the simple yet powerful pathos of this line: “After knowing some people, one can’t help feeling one’s met them a bit too late.“It wasn’t age that separated us. It was her past, completely concealed from my knowledge. There are houses that you can’t really enter even through their wide open doors. They are alien, unpossessable.”
And this is exactly where I lost myself into Indy's roller coaster of emotions. I wasn't able to decide, whether I am happy for his content feeling or sad for his one-sided love. Also, if you are expecting that the story would give you a sense of closure, it stands true by its title. It makes you wait in anticipation that you may get to read more about Indy and Raina, and there may be a different end to this beautiful story.
I absolutely fell in love with everything in this novel. From the characters of Indy and Raina to the not-so-coming-of-age storyline which is a different genre to read. Days of Longing gives one message that it's not necessary that every day will be a good day, and every story will be a good story. Nirmal Verma has left that to his readers to decide, and I really liked his style.

What a poignant tale of an young impecunious Indian student and his short-lived romance with a war-survivor Austrian woman set in the picturesque locales of Prague. I've been to the eternally romantic city of Prague and could relate to the vivacious, an amalgam of the old & the new and the liberal easy-going imagery of the lively city. The loquacious Raina and the reticent author make an amazing pair and leave an imprint or as Raina would put it "vivid memories".
The song (loosely translated from hindi) aptly chronicles the protagonist's dilemma.
Tomorrow is a dream,
Yesterday is now just ours
We live in the past,
Even if the world takes away the entire universe
It takes away the wealth and treasures
What the world can't steal from me
Give me one such moment
A moment in which there are all the colourful seasons of love
A moment in which there are true songs of time
The song (loosely translated from hindi) aptly chronicles the protagonist's dilemma.

I am not sure how much I liked this book. It felt like a part of a novel that didn’t make sense in full so a part of it was published. But then I am not so sure as it was first of Nirmal Verma’s that I had read.

আমি একটা এরকম বই নিয়ে লিখছি, যেটা সম্ভবত বেশিরভাগ বাংলা পাঠক পড়েনি। (লিখছি বাংলায়, যাতে কয়েকজন বাঙালির দৃষ্টি আকর্ষন হোক)
পড়েনি, কারণ বইটা হিন্দিতে লেখা। আমি ইংরেজি প্রচ্ছদ দিয়েছি ঠিকই, কিন্তু আসল বইয়ের নাম হল ওয়ে দিন। না, সেই সময়ের সঙ্গে এর কোন সম্পর্ক নেই। সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায় খুব সম্ভবত নির্মল বর্মাকে চিনতেন না, নির্মল ও পরিচিত হননি নীললোহিত এর সঙ্গে।
নির্মল বর্মা হিন্দিতে ঝড় তোলেননি, কারণ তাঁর লেখা সুরেন্দ্র মোহন পাঠক বা বেদ প্রকাশ শর্মার মত নয়। ' নই কাহানি ' আন্দোলনের সূত্রধর হওয়া সত্বেও বৃহত্তর পাঠক তাঁর লেখা পড়েনি। জ্ঞানপীঠ পুরস্কার প্রাপ্ত নির্মল অনেকটা সময় কাটিয়েছেন দেশের বাইরে, ওয়ে দিন তার লেখা প্রথম উপন্যাস।
নির্মল বর্মার লেখা আমি কয়েকটা পড়েছি। অন্তিম অরণ্য আর এক চিথরা সুখ অনেক আগেই পড়েছিলাম, তখন মনে হয়েছিল তাঁকে অনায়াসে কুন্দেরা অথবা মুরাকামির সঙ্গে একাসনে বসিয়ে দেওয়া যায়। ( আমি কুন্দেরা ��েমন পড়িনি, কিন্তু কয়েকটা গল্প পড়ে একটা ধারণা হয়েছে ঠিকই) নির্মল বর্মার লেখা প্রতিদিনের জীবন নিয়ে, দৃশ্যমান ও অদৃশ্য অভিজ্ঞতা নিয়েই লিখেছেন বেশি। প্লট ফ্লট নিয়ে বেশি মাথা ঘামাতেন না, কিন্তু পরিবেশ আর চরিত্র তৈরি করতে তাঁর জুড়ি মেলা ভার। তাঁর লেখনীতে একটা বিশেষ ব্যাপার আছে, একটানা পড়লে নেশা ধরে যায়।
ওয়ে দিন প্রাগের কাহিনী। ভারতীয় এক ছাত্র প্রাগে থাকে, শীতের ছুটিতে আচমকা একটা কাজের সন্ধান পায়, অস্ট্রিয়ান এক টুরিস্ট এর ইন্টারপ্রেটার হতে হবে কিছুদিনের জন্যে। সেই কাজের সূত্রে পরিচয় হয় রাইনার সঙ্গে, একটা সম্পর্ক তৈরি হয়। তারপর বইয়ের পাতা জুড়ে বরফ, কুয়াশা, বিষাদ, আর প্রেম। প্রাগের রাস্তায় ঘুরে বেড়াচ্ছে দুজনে, ল্যাম্পপোস্টের ধোঁয়া ধোঁয়া আলো কুয়াশার সৃষ্টি করেছে। অসাধারণ সেটিং আর সংলাপ, সঙ্গে নির্মল বর্মার নিজস্ব ভাষার নির্যাস। সেই নেশা আমার আজও নামেনি।
বইটা ইংরেজিতে অনূদিত হয়েছে, বাংলায় হয়েছে কী না জানি না। বাংলা আর হিন্দির মধ্যে একটা দূরত্ব রয়ে গেছে ( না তৈরি করা হয়েছে! ) সেটা দূর করতে পারলে একটা কাজের কাজ হবে। যদি ইচ্ছে হয়, হিন্দি না হলে ইংরেজি অনুবাদটা পড়ে দেখতে পারেন।

"जब वह क्षण आता है, जिसे हम ‘अन्तिम’ कहते हैं, तब वह अन्तिम बिल्कुल नहीं लगता। लगता है, जैसे कोई पुरानी पहचानी-सी घड़ी वापस लौट आई है—एक जिये हुए क्षण की बासी छाया-सी, जिसे हम न छोड़ सकते हैं, न दुबारा पकड़ सकते हैं।" - निर्मल वर्मा
कभी कभी कुछ ऐसा होता जिसे हम ताउम्र चाह कर भी भुला नहीं पाते हैं। ऐसा ही कथा शिल्प है निर्मल वर्मा जी का। "वे दिन" उपन्यास लेखक ने प्राग शहर (चेकोस्लोवाकिया की राजधानी ) में बिताये हुए दिनों की याद में रचा है। इत्तेफ़ाक़ की बात है कि यूरोप में रहते हुए मैं ख़ुद दो बार प्राग शहर घूमने जा चुका हूं और कहानी में उद्धृत ज्यादातर जगहों पर भी गया हूं लेकिन निर्मल वर्मा जी के इन जगहों के वृतांत पढ़ने के बाद ऐसा लगता है जैसे कोई नयी असाधारण, अद्भुत जगह हो। इसे शायद इनकी लेखनी का जादू ही कहा जायेगा कि सब नया और एक नई तरह की रोशनी में डूबा हुआ नज़र आता है। कहानी और कथानक पर चर्चा करते हैं। कहानी के तीन मुख्य पात्र हैं - इंडी (नरेटर), रायना (जर्मन महिला) और तीसरा खुद शीत ऋत के सौंदर्य से लबालब, प्राग शहर ।
इंडी (कहानी का कथावाचक) - भारत का रहने वाला, घर से मीलों दूर प्राग की युनिवर्सिटी में पढ़ने वाला एक छात्र। सर्दी के इस मौसम में जब हॉस्टल का मेस बंद है, कड़की में दिन गुजार रहा है। घर उसकी स्मृतियों में उतना बचा नहीं है जितना होना अपेक्षित होता है l "सुख" की तलाश में सतत् प्रयासरत है l इंडी नाम संभवतः "इंडियन" से निकला है, हालांकि, कहानी में कोई पुष्टि नहीं मिलती है इस बात की।
रायना :- जर्मन महिला, अपने पुत्र मीता के साथ वियना, ऑस्ट्रिया से सर्दियों में घूमने प्राग आयी है l विश्व युद्ध की लडाई में कोलोन शहर में समय गुजारा है l युद्ध की विभीषिका करीब से देखी है l इंडी से उम्र में कुछ बड़ी है लेकिन अल्हड़पन में दो क़दम आगे ही है।
प्राग शहर जो कहानी लिखे जाते समय चेकोस्लोवाकिया की राजधानी थी, चेकोस्लोवाकिया के विघटन के पश्चात स्लोवाकिया अब अलग देश है जिसकी राजधानी ब्रतिस्लावा है। कहानी में बर्फ़ से ढके हुए क्रिसमस के दिनों का प्राग अपनी हिम आच्छादित सड़कों, वृक्षों आदि की नैसर्गिक सुंदरता की वज़ह सेअद्भुत जान पड़ता है।
कड़ाके की ठंड, दिसंबर का आखिरी सप्ताह और कड़की के दिन में इंडी जैसे तैसे यूनिवर्सिटी के इंटरनेशनल हॉस्टल में अपने दिन गुज़ार रहा है। प्राग की ठंड लगभग असहनीय है, यहां सिर्फ़ गर्म कपड़े ही नहीं बल्कि हीटर और शराब(वोदका, कोन्याक, शेरी आदि) नितांत आवश्यक है। इसी बीच रायना अपने बेटे के साथ प्राग घूमने आती है और एक ट्रांसलेटर (अनुवादक) की तलाश में है। और किसी विकल्प के अभाव में एजेंसी की तरफ़ से इंडी ही वो अनुवादक नियुक्त होता है। रायना पहले भी प्राग आ चुकी है पर इस बार वो इंडी की नज़रों से शहर को देखती है। दोनों साथ में पूरा शहर फ़िर से तलाशते हैं और इन यात्राओं में एक दूसरे के क़रीब आ जाते हैं। इस हल्की फुल्की सी प्रेम कहानी में आप किरदारों के विषय में काफ़ी कुछ जान पाते हैं। लड़ाई के दिनों को याद करके रायाना कई बार सहम उठती है और अपनी बातों में ज़िक्र भी करती है। इंडी रायना को प्राग शहर के अपने सभी मनपसंद स्पॉट्स पर घुमाता है। वहीं दूसरी तरफ़ इंडी के इर्द गिर्द फ्रांज, मारिया और टी टी की कहानी भी चलती है, ये सभी यूनिवर्सिटी में छात्र हैं और इंडी के खास दोस्त भी। फ्रांज जर्मन है, फ़िल्म स्कूल का छात्र है और परेशान है कि यहां प्राग में कोई उसके सिनेमा को समझ नहीं पा रहा, मारिया चेकोस्लोवाकिया की ही रहने वाली है और फ्रांज से प्रेम करती है। बर्लिन जाने के लिए उसे वीजा नहीं मिल पा रहा है।
कहानी का केंद्रीय भाव प्रेम है पर पात्रों को इस बात का आभास भी है कि सिर्फ़ मिलना ही हर प्रेम कहानी की नियति नहीं है। अभाव में भी सुख की तलाश निहित है और मानवीय संवेदनाओं का अद्भुत वर्णन है। प्रेम में आतुरता है पर एक अलग किस्म की। अंतरंगता के क्षणों में भी फूहड़ता लेशमात्र भी प्रतीत नहीं होती। पात्र काफ़ी हद तक अंतरराष्ट्रीय कहे जायेंगे और युद्ध की चर्चा करके लेखक ने तत्कालीन विश्व पटल पर घटित आधुनिक घटनाओं को साहित्य से जोड़ा है। समय के हिसाब से निश्चय ही ये बोल्ड प्रयोग रहा होगा। साल के आखिरी सप्ताह में पात्रों के जीवन में क्या घटित होता है और उनके जीवन पर इसका क्या असर पड़ता है , यह आपको पूरी कहानी पढ़ कर ही पता लगेगा।

कभी कभी कुछ ऐसा होता जिसे हम ताउम्र चाह कर भी भुला नहीं पाते हैं। ऐसा ही कथा शिल्प है निर्मल वर्मा जी का। "वे दिन" उपन्यास लेखक ने प्राग शहर (चेकोस्लोवाकिया की राजधानी ) में बिताये हुए दिनों की याद में रचा है। इत्तेफ़ाक़ की बात है कि यूरोप में रहते हुए मैं ख़ुद दो बार प्राग शहर घूमने जा चुका हूं और कहानी में उद्धृत ज्यादातर जगहों पर भी गया हूं लेकिन निर्मल वर्मा जी के इन जगहों के वृतांत पढ़ने के बाद ऐसा लगता है जैसे कोई नयी असाधारण, अद्भुत जगह हो। इसे शायद इनकी लेखनी का जादू ही कहा जायेगा कि सब नया और एक नई तरह की रोशनी में डूबा हुआ नज़र आता है। कहानी और कथानक पर चर्चा करते हैं। कहानी के तीन मुख्य पात्र हैं - इंडी (नरेटर), रायना (जर्मन महिला) और तीसरा खुद शीत ऋत के सौंदर्य से लबालब, प्राग शहर ।
इंडी (कहानी का कथावाचक) - भारत का रहने वाला, घर से मीलों दूर प्राग की युनिवर्सिटी में पढ़ने वाला एक छात्र। सर्दी के इस मौसम में जब हॉस्टल का मेस बंद है, कड़की में दिन गुजार रहा है। घर उसकी स्मृतियों में उतना बचा नहीं है जितना होना अपेक्षित होता है l "सुख" की तलाश में सतत् प्रयासरत है l इंडी नाम संभवतः "इंडियन" से निकला है, हालांकि, कहानी में कोई पुष्टि नहीं मिलती है इस बात की।

मैंने यह उपन्यास अभी अभी पढ़ा है. यह उपन्यास हिंदी साहित्य में एक विशेष स्थान रखता है. निर्मल वर्मा जी नई कहानी आन्दोलन के प्रवर्तक रहे हैं और यह उपन्यास इस आन्दोलन का एक मुखर समर्थक है.
'वे दिन' कहानी है एक भारतीय प्रवासी छात्र की. उसके दोस्त उसको इंदी नाम से बुलाते हैं. यह स्पष्ट नहीं है की उसका नाम ��सके देश (इंडिया) की वजह से यह पड़ा या यह इन्दीवर का संक्षिप्त रूप है. वह प्राग नामक एक चेक शहर में रहता है और फर्राटेदार चेक बोल लेता है. इसके अलावा उसको जर्मन और अंग्रेजी का भी ज्ञान है.
जाहिर तौर पर इस प्रकार के चरित्र हिंदी साहित्य में पहले नहीं पाए जाते थे. यह हिंदी को अंतर्राष्ट्रीय बनाने की एक खूबसूरत पहल है. इंडी के हाल खस्ता हैं और प्राग में सर्दियाँ चरम पर हैं. यह भारत जैसी सर्दी न���ीं हैं कि स्वेटर पहन लिया और हो गया. यहाँ शराब पीना लगभग ज़रूरी है, बिना हीटर के जीवन मुश्किल है. बर्फ गिरती रहती है और हलकी धूप में लोग उन्माद की स्थिति में आ जाते हैं.
ऐसे मौसम में एक तलाकशुदा महिला रायना अपने बच्चे मीता के साथ ऑस्ट्रिया से प्राग घूमने आई हैं. इंदी को एक टूरिस्ट एजेंसी रायना के इंटरप्रेटर के रूप में भेजती है और एक हलकी फुल्की प्रेमकहानी शुरू हो जाती है.
इस कहानी में आपका आम हिंदी फिल्म नायक नहीं है. यह एक छात्र है जिसको अपने से बड़ी और विदेशी महिला से प्यार है. वह त्याग की मूर्ति नहीं है. वह अपना प्रेम प्रकट करता है और धागे उलझते चले जाते हैं.

'सुनो...जो हमें मिला है, वह काफी नहीं है?"
"मालूम नहीं..."
"मुझे मालूम है...लेकिन तुम विश्वास नहीं करते।"

"सिर्फ इन दिनों में...उसके बाहर नहीं।"

एक खूबसूरत-सी स्वच्छ जल वाली नदी हो, इतनी स्वच्छ की नदी की तलहटी भी दिखाई दे। नदी प्राकृतिक रूप से सुरम्य और रमणीक स्थानों के बीच से मंथर गति से बहती हुई निकल रही है। गति मंथर है लेकिन कई जगह उंचाई से नीचे गिरती है, कई जगह गोल-गोल घुमने वाले भंवर भी बनते है। उस नदी पर बिना चप्पू वाला एक नाव हो। और उस नाव पर आप सवार हों।
नाव मंथर गति से नदी के धारा की दिशा में बढ़ रही है। जिधर भी नज़र घुमाइए आपको मंत्रमुग्ध करनेवाले नज़ारे मिलेंगे। कई जगह नदी की धारा में आपको मुरझाये फूल बहते हुए मिलते हैं तो कई जगह वहीं उग आए सुन्दर जल-कमल। बस एक इच्छा हो सकती है कि नाव थोड़ा तेज चलता तो आगे के नज़ारे जल्दी नज़र आते। लेकिन तब पीछे छूट रहे नज़ारों को जी भर कर पी कहाँ पाते! तीन दिन तक आप नाव पर बैठे बह रहे होते हैं और फिर एक अनजान जगह नाव खुद ही किनारे लग जाता है। आप नाव से कहते हैं और चलो ...... नाव कहता है....अब बस, it won't help !
प्राग जैसे सुन्दर शहर में एक प्रवासी भारतीय स्टूडेंट को एक ऑस्ट्रियन महिला टूरिस्ट, जिसके साथ उसका छोटा-सा बेटा भी है, के लिए इंटरप्रेटर का पार्ट टाइम जॉब मिलता है। अब तीन दिन तक आप इनके साथ एक ऐसे सफ़र के साथी बनते हैं जहाँ दोस्ती है, अपेक्षा है, दूरी है, नजदीकी है, चाहत है, दुःख है, सुख है, प्यार है, जलन है......कुछ-कुछ उस नदी के सैर की तरह जो मैंने ऊपर लिखा।
"मालूम नहीं..."

There's something about the book that I can't quite get out of my head. There's something so remarkably close and tangible that makes me wonder whether all good narratives do that. Not all of them do that though. I had, not long ago, travelled home alone in the winter, and felt that intimacy and distance the way one feels when one knows home isn't the same anymore and we've got less of physical places to identify from memory. I would distance myself consciously from probing the book's aesthetics primarily as I feel the lingering strains of the frantic love, longing, loss and displacement. Think I just went with a hammer at the old school criticism! It's a wonderful narrative for anyone like me, who's looking to escape into an unknown wintry spurt in tender knots of memory. Highly recommended.

*Warning- this review is for the original hindi book "Ve Din" by Nirmal Verma and not for it's English translation*
"ve Din" is a phenomenon piece of hindi literature. I read the original hindi one and not the English translation. And one thing I noticed is that it's a pure original classic piece. It's going to be great for all the voracious hindi readers but the young or still blossoming or beginner readers may not enjoy it. There is huge writing difference between today's millenium hindi books and books like this. So, it's important to gage your reading interest before picking this book.
It's a slow burning and amazingly discriptive story which pulls you inside and make you a part of its vivid and beautiful writing.
It's not for everyone but it's definately for that special someone (advance reader). I dreamily recommend it.

I think the author did a great job in painting the mood of a particular time and place....an unexpected romance in a wintry Prague. I'd just left Europe when I started reading this book (on the flight home, in fact), and it took me back to the previous winter, and the magic of a European winter.
But apart from the mood, this book didn't really work for me. The characters were not well etched out, there were a lot of loose threads (I suspect this was deliberate but it distracted and annoyed me). I typically enjoy plot driven books or character heavy books but this was neither so not my cup of tea.
However, I can imagine that the language in the original Hindi version must be beautiful.
But apart from the mood, this book didn't really work for me.
