The Man Who Walked in Darkness

Rate this book
Miles is back for another round of hard-boiled pulp action in the two-fisted sequel to The Man Who Crossed Worlds.

Freelance Tunneler Miles Franco is having a bad time of it. He's facing a trial that could see him spend the rest of his days in prison. Hallucinations of dead men haunt him day and night. And to top it all off, one of his bandmates has been poisoned by a toxin from another world.

Miles doesn't take kindly to people killing his friends. Now he'll have to walk the darkest road he's ever been down. With corrupt corporations on one side and fanatical interdimensional gangsters on the other, he doesn't hold out any hope he'll come out of this alive. But he has a promise to keep.

And Miles will burn every last world to the ground if it gets him answers.

Chris Strange discovered at an early age that he was completely unsuited to life among normal human beings. After experimenting with several different career paths, he said to hell with it and went back to writing, his first love.

Chris is the author of Don’t Be a Hero and the Miles Franco series of hard-boiled urban fantasy novels, beginning with The Man Who Crossed Worlds. He writes for the daydreamers, the losers, the cynics and the temporarily insane. His stories are full of restless energy and driven by a passion for the unorthodox. He loves writing characters on the fringe of society: the drifters, the knights errant, the down-and-out.

In his spare time, Chris is an unapologetic geek, spending far too long wrapped up in sci-fi books, watching old kaiju movies and playing video games. He lives in the far away land of New Zealand, and is currently working towards a Master’s degree in Forensic Science.

He doesn’t plan on growing up any time soon.

Chris also writes crime and noir fiction as Harry St. John.

"So here's how it is. The name's Miles Franco, and I'm a freelance Tunneler. You see, there's our world, and then there's another one, the one some asshole named Heaven. A world of instability and randomness, a cruel parody of our world, populated by a race called the Vei. Sometimes people want to cross worlds or send stuff through without going through the proper channels. That's where I come in. I open Tunnels and transport people between the worlds, or I can tap into the chaos of Heaven and alter things in our world. I do that, and then I get paid. It's a living."

The Man Who Walked In Darkness is one of the most captivating books I have read. As is the Chris Strange standard, the story grabs you right from the beginning and never lets you take a breather. The plot is simple enough, right? There are the good guys, the bad guys, the good guys you think are bad guys and vice versa and then there is Miles. Well, maybe not that simple... Miles is obviously the catalyst of the story and damn he does a good job of effing things up most the time. Miles Franco is one of my absolute favorite characters! He is stubborn as hell and hard to keep down. The poor guy sure can take an ass whoopin though! I was first introduced to Miles Franco in The Man Who Crossed Worlds and loved it. My review is HERE if you are interested.

The gang is back. All of the supporting characters, like Detective Vivian Reed, Desmond and Tania, are dedicated to helping Miles survive. Sometimes, even risking their own lives for his. But, even through the surly quips that are classic Franco, you can tell he obviously cares for them just as much.

Chris Strange is an amazing author with a solid voice. I cannot give him enough praise. His story-telling ability is definitely top notch in my opinion. His characters are full of life and depth that is rare these days. The noir style with the sci-fi edge is brilliant. Basically, if you can handle some violence and language then I highly recommend The Man Who Walked In Darkness.

The idea of string theory and parallel universes has only recently become a new norm in the world of science. It has evolved from a crazed wishful theory to a solid and possible concept. Today scientists study the possibility that many worlds exist on levels that humanity is not capable of understanding. These new theories have opened up a fountain of questions and excitement for both astrophysics and those in the world of literature. The notion alone that humanity is not alone is both awe inspiring and frightening. What would these aliens look like and how would they interact with humans? Could humanity accept another species of intelligent beings or would utter chaos happen? This story touches on the idea of parallel universes and alien life forms. It is about a man named Miles Franco who happens to be a gifted tunneler. A person with profound abilities that is able to open doors to other worlds with only his mind and a drug. A man that is both tortured and talented, but is in constant danger. What do you get when you mix a fractured man with godlike powers? You get one hell of a story!

This book was one insane ride after another. I absolutely loved it and am going to have my husband read it. I normally do not get into books like this, but I am happy that I did.The story was very captivating and had me on edge the entire time. I really enjoyed the main character and would like to give it a go with the author's other books. The ideas about parallel universes and how his character was able to open doors to them really intrigued me. For me the story seemed original and perked my continual interest. I did not put it down once and was anxious to finish it! I have to recommend this book hands down! I honestly believe that you will enjoy it for the great story that it is. I also have to thank the author for giving it to me in a Librarything member giveaway! Awesome job author and great job publisher! You have a keeper here. :)

I received this book for free in exchange for agreeing to provide an honest review.

I love a book that keeps me guessing, and that is what The Man Who Walked In Darkness does amazingly well. Miles is definitely a man who marches to the beat of his own drummer. His personal moral code has a tenancy to get him in big trouble. He's rather like that watch that takes a licking but keeps on ticking.
This story has more ups and downs than a roller coaster. The characters are wonderfully described, yet the reader is never quite sure who is on the side of evil as opposed to who is on the side of good. Except of course for Miles loyal friends who are always there when he needs them. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, there came another plot twist. I loved the language contrasts used in the book. We are in the future when moving between worlds is quite common and yet old fashioned detective story language slips into the narrative. I loved it.

Pretty good

2nd book of the series, just as good as the first. Story about a guy who can basically travel between worlds, dealing with issues from the previous book. A friend is murdered, and he sets out to find out who did it. He's kinda a good hearted dirtbag. I really like the main character, the dialogue, the humor, and there is plenty of action. Storyline is engaging, the secondary characters are a little flat, the sexy cop, cute apprentice, and buddy. Pretty typical urban fantasy with male lead, enjoyed it and will read the next one.

A good story with even more noir-style writing than the previous book. Good pace and interesting cast of characters, for the most part. Des can stop saying "guy" at the end of every sentence. As with many detective-type stories, the main character has a bad case of all-the-women-want-to-sleep-with-me. I'll keep reading this series - Jim Butcher's Dresden Files had a bit of an iffy start but turned out fantastic, and I can see the same potential here. Fingers crossed.
