Absolutely fantastic work on the Second World War. In fact, I wish it was available when I studied History.
It is exceptionally well organized and easy to read. It can also be used a a good reference manual.
Finally, it is quite well referenced.
I highly recommend.

In "The Fight of Their Lives," Andy Kutler masterfully navigates the complexities of World War II, offering readers a compelling journey through one of humanity's darkest chapters. With a keen eye for detail and a narrative that flows seamlessly, Kutler brings to life the pivotal moments and profound impact of the global conflict.
From the initial blitzkriegs to the decisive battles and the aftermath, Kutler's storytelling captivates both history enthusiasts and newcomers alike. More than just a historical account, this book resonates with contemporary relevance, drawing parallels between past events and present-day geopolitics.
It's an essential read that not only educates but also prompts reflection on the enduring lessons of courage, sacrifice, and resilience from those who lived through the fight of their lives.

I received a copy of this from Book Sirens, and my review isn't influenced by the author, Book Sirens or the publisher. All thoughts listed in this review are my own.
I'm going to prove to be very unpopular in this. I've read many books on World War II, and this has ranged from basic books (for the reader wanting to start learning about this period of history), to more in depth ones. From the excerpt listed, I believed that this would be the former, and went in with the knowledge that I would probably know most of what was written, but I've always found hidden gems in these books. There is always new information being found and I really like being surprised by something I didn't know before.
And on that point, this book delivers. There are plenty of information that I didn't know about, such as how the English airforce being unable to properly defend London, and other cities, and therefore grounded, did give them the breath to be able to come back stronger.
Another definite Star for this book, is the in-depth information on the Americans part of the War. My knowledge of this has always been sketchy, mostly because books that are 'everything you need to know about WW2' can only write of the most important (as in defeats/wins, or, how the Americans were changing their entire country around to prepare, and then participate, in the war.
But this is part of where the book falls apart for me. By the blurb, and I had glanced over a few reviews on Amazon, of what it was about, many listed that it was the definitive book on World War II, and were praising it. And I may have done the same, except that this book is more of the Americans, and their involvement in it. The other countries of the Axis, the Allies, are regulated to only a 1/3rd of the book. The author does make sure that the basics, and this is fleshed out by information I didn't know, but also padded out to keep it interesting. But the American side is given the majority of the book.
So, the first part is the West & East Front in Europe. It is all on Germany's efforts, along with Eastern European Countries and Italy's against the Allies. After Hitler's death, and the aftermath, the book suddenly switches to America: how the country was faring before the War; how they reacted when the War broken out and how they helped the Allies; and then entering the War and their accomplishments. The backward motion of time interrupted the flow, and it took me a while to get back into it.
I won't argue that this is interesting. I learned a lot, and if it had been at the start of the book, before the section of the Eastern and Western Front, it may not been such a jolt. Then it could have led into the war against Germany and its' other Allies (excluding Japan) and gone on from there. The final section, of the American's war in the Far East against Japan would have felt more natural then.
I understand that part of the reason why I didn't like this book as much as I could is because I went into it, not knowing that it's primarily the American effort. I would have given another Star if I had, but the way the sections were placed in the book, and how the war against Germany (and the other countries) were only given 35% (I think) of the book, made this book difficult to read.
If you want to read a book that gives a good starter book to World War II, and want a mostly American point of view, then this book would be a good one to pick up. The writer writes well. There is good flow, other than a few times when information is repeated, and it's an easy read. So, I give this book 2 Stars.

A well written and researched overview of the events leading to WW II.
I found the book to be very readable and for a topic that would need multiple volumes to cover fully the author did an excellent job of hitting the history and implications of the war.
I see a couple of other books he has written that I will have to get next.
I was given an ARC for free and provide this review voluntarily. I believe other war history readers will enjoy this view of WW II.

When I was born in 1956, World War II had ended only eleven years before, so when I was a young boy and first got interested in its history, it didn’t seem like it was that long ago. But for kids now, World War II is almost as distant in time as the American Civil War was for me. And history has a way of quickly receding in our collective memory, especially for those who didn’t experience it. I remember in very clear detail the entire morning of September 11, 2001, as I watched the World Trade Center come down live on TV, and every year on that date, I would make a point of commemorating those events in my high school classroom. This became more important to me the more distant that unforgettable day became—by the time I retired from teaching, my students hadn’t even been born yet in 2001. So in light of all that, it makes sense that Andy Kutler’s The Fight of Their Lives is subtitled A 21st Century Primer on World War II.
In “A Note to Readers,” author Andy Kutler acknowledges this lack of familiarity with the war that is so immediate and known to people of older generations (like me), and states his “concise but still-comprehensive account of the war” is written “to broaden our understanding of this historic clash and apply its lessons to our troubled times today.” In other words, he strives not just to chronicle the major events, but also to explain why they are historically important and why they are still important more than 80 years later. Having been interested in World War II since I was nine years old or so and thus having read extensively on so many aspects of the war, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed reading The Fight of Their Lives. Mr. Kutler covers the major events of all theaters of the war and also devotes a large sections to the American home front. I am grateful he avoids revisionist history, but he also doesn’t shy away from what seem to me to be even-handed accounts of some of the darker aspects of the American effort—discrimination against women and Blacks, and the internment of Japanese-American citizens—as well as some of the issues that some revisionist historians find contentious, such as the massive area bombing of German cities, the gutting by by firebombs and Napalm the cities of Japan, and the deployment of atomic bombs to end the war.
The bottom line: The Fight of Their Lives, in 362 pages that read easy and flow well, is exactly what it purports to be: A 21st Century Primer on World War II. If I were looking for one book for someone who knew next-to-nothing about the most destructive war in human history but wanted to know and understand it, this is the book I would recommend.

I just finished Andy Kutler's The Fight of Their Lives: A 21st-Century Primer on World War II, and I can honestly say this is one of the most worthwhile books I've picked up in ages. I loved all of Andy Kutler's fiction books, but this showed just how versatile and talented he is as a writer. The writing is clear and crisp, making the incredibly heavy subject matter surprisingly engaging despite the serious nature of the history. It’s uncommon for a history book to feel both meticulously researched and genuinely timely, but this one achieves that perfect balance. This is absolutely mandatory reading for any fan of historical WW2 fiction -- or historical non-fiction, for that matter -- because it provides the foundational knowledge that makes all those fictional stories resonate deeper.
Before reading this, I thought I had a pretty solid handle on WW2, but I was wrong. I honestly wish I had read this book before embarking on my recent historical WW2 fiction binge, because Kutler’s approach gave me a much greater understanding of the war as a whole, moving beyond the standard battle narratives to explore the true global scope of the conflict. More importantly, I learned about aspects of the war that I didn’t know much about, particularly the intricate political and economic maneuvers that often get overlooked in favor of the major combat engagements. I appreciated the brief biographical summaries of important figures, which provided necessary context, and likewise, the moving stories of individual heroism that grounded the massive conflict in human experience.
What makes this book so timely and relevant is the way it expertly draws the through-line from the decisions made in the 1930s and 1940s straight to today. Reading it provided me with a better understanding of the contemporary political climate, showing how the legacies of global conflict, ideological purity, and geopolitical alliances continue to shape our world. Ultimately, it helped put our current political climate in perspective, reminding me that the struggles against extremism, division, and authoritarianism are perennial. This is more than just a history book; it's an essential lesson for navigating the present.

In The Fight of Their Lives, Andy Kutler presents a sweeping narrative of World War II, tracing the conflict from the fallout of the Treaty of Versailles to the dawn of the Cold War. The book details the rise of fascism in Italy, Japan, and Germany and highlights the pivotal moments that brought together the unlikely but crucial Allied forces. Through this expansive historical lens, Kutler paints a vivid picture of the war’s causes, consequences, and the transformations it triggered. As contemporary issues emerge, the author reminds us of the dangerous outcomes of unchecked nationalism and the crucial need for timely collective action.
What struck me most about this book is the sheer breadth of its coverage. It offers one of the most comprehensive and balanced World War II narratives I’ve encountered in the past couple of years. Kutler manages to connect complex global events while keeping the focus on people, which is something that really brings the history to life. By highlighting the personal experiences of individuals who made their mark during the war, he adds a deeply human element to an otherwise overwhelming global conflict.
The author doesn’t stop at battles and military strategies. He delves into the cultural and socioeconomic climate of the countries involved, creating a rich backdrop for key decisions made during the war. I particularly appreciated how the book examines the war’s far-reaching effects on important social issues, including the Civil Rights Movement, systemic racism, women's rights, and the nuclear arms race. These insights add layers of depth to the historical narrative, showcasing how World War II reshaped the world, not just politically but socially and culturally as well.
Kutler’s research is impeccable, yet he presents his findings in an engaging and accessible way. The book is educational without ever feeling dense or overwhelming, and I think it’s perfect for readers who want an understanding of the importance of diplomacy, cooperation, and shared responsibility. I highly recommend The Fight of Their Lives to adult readers, particularly those with an interest in historical nonfiction, as it offers a fresh perspective on a war that continues to shape our world.

Reading this book came at just the right time for me for a few different reasons: We just passed the 80th anniversary of D-Day last week; last month, my family took a vacation that included a trip to visit Normandy, Omaha Beach, and the other beaches fought during this attack; my grandfather and his brother were part of the second wave on Omaha Beach on D-Day; and my husband and I have been watching several documentaries related to World War II within the past month.
After saying the above, I found "The Fight of Their Lives: A 21st Century Primer on World War II" by Andy Kutler to be a compelling and timely exploration of one of the most significant and devastating chapters in human history. The book's portrayal of the events leading up to World War II sets a vivid stage for understanding the scale and impact of the war.
I found Kutler’s description of the events to be very intense, capturing the urgency and power of the war's pivotal moments. By documenting these events, the book not only recounts the heroism and sacrifice of those involved, but also highlights the catastrophic toll of the war, which claimed millions of lives and reshaped the geopolitical landscape of the 20th century. I appreciated the emphasis on the continuing legacies and lessons of World War II, reminding readers of the importance of understanding history to prevent its repetition. This aspect makes "The Fight of Their Lives" not just a historical account, but also a reflection on the broader implications and lessons for today's world.
Overall, I found this book to be a comprehensive and thought-provoking exploration of World War II; a fascinating read for anyone interested in understanding this pivotal moment in global history. This is a book that not only informs, but also prompts reflection on the enduring impacts of war and the resilience of the human spirit in times of crisis.

Your assignment is to write a comprehensive history of World War II, including sufficient background information on the causes of the war and a post-war epilogue, in under 350 pages. Be sure to include sidebars with every chapter that highlight significant characters, equipment, and other important, relevant information to complement that chapter—go!
This was the challenging task undertaken by Andy Kutler, and he succeeded quite admirably. The Fight of Their Lives completely covers all aspects of the Second World War in all theaters, in comprehensive detail, and in an easily read manner.
Having authored articles on military history including World War II and constantly reading books and listening to podcasts on that war, I could not think of a single campaign, personality, key piece of equipment, or background information that the author missed.
The book concisely covers the economic and political causes of the war in both theaters, covers each theater in detail, and also covers the war from an American perspective “at home,” to include the contributions of women, African Americans, and the plight of Japanese American citizens interned during the war. The Manhattan Project, which yielded the world’s first atomic weapon, is also covered in that section. The final section of the book provides an insightful transition to the post war Cold War.
Clear and easy to understand maps are included throughout the book, and the content is thoroughly indexed. This book is a great asset to anyone wanting to understand the totality of the Second World War without having to read numerous voluminous tomes on individual theaters, campaigns, and biographies. It is ideal as a reference and is well suited as a textbook for homeschooling purposes.

The Fight of Their Lives: A 21st-Century Primer on World War II by Andy Kutler is a compelling and meticulously researched narrative that offers a fresh perspective on the cataclysmic events of the Second World War. Kutler’s work is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming adversity.
The book begins with a chilling account of Hitler’s blitzkrieg into Poland, setting the stage for a global conflict that would eventually draw in nations from every corner of the world. Kutler’s vivid prose transports readers to the front lines, from the blood-soaked fields of Europe to the treacherous jungles of the Pacific islands. The author doesn’t shy away from the brutal realities of war, yet he manages to capture the indomitable will of those who fought for freedom.
What sets this book apart is its accessibility; it serves as an ideal introduction for those new to the subject while providing a richly detailed refresher for those more familiar with the history. The narrative is fast-paced, yet comprehensive, covering the strategic battles, political maneuvers, and personal stories that shaped the course of the war.
Kutler’s work is a powerful reminder of the lessons we must remember. The legacies of World War II are still relevant today, and “The Fight of Their Lives” underscores the importance of understanding our past to avoid repeating the same mistakes.
Andy Kutler’s The Fight of Their Lives is a remarkable addition to World War II literature. It’s accessible, thorough, and accurate, making it a valuable resource for both young and seasoned readers alike.

"The Fight of Their Lives" offers an accessible deep dive into one of humanity’s darkest yet most defining periods. This book has a journalistic style, sometimes reading like an essay, sometimes like a history book, and it isn’t just for history buffs; it’s an essential read for anyone looking to understand the sweeping impact of World War II, both in the moment and in the decades that followed.
The narrative opens in September 1939, recounting Hitler’s relentless march across Poland and the chain reaction it triggered on a global scale. The author masterfully balances historical detail with storytelling style, capturing everything from the harrowing battles on European soil to the fierce Pacific confrontations following Pearl Harbor. Each page brings to life the unimaginable scale of the conflict, painting a picture of both devastation and unyielding human spirit, with a broader view of the facts and how the conflicts started before "the start" we hear or read about—the facts before the facts.
One of the book’s standout qualities is its ability to connect past and present. It becomes clear how profoundly these events shaped modern geopolitics.

Many feel that World War II was one of the darkest periods in American history. In 1939, when Germany invaded Poland, it led to a series of events that would cost countless lives. Many countries were pulled into the conflict. By the time America felt that it had no choice but to become involved, there was a sense of global turmoil that every human being who was alive at that time still vividly remembers.
This book is a meticulous, blow by blow history lesson that pulls no punches as it talks about what the war was like for American troops, what was at stake, and how our nation changed as a result of the conflict. At a time when fascism is on the rise again, both overseas and here at home, this is a timely read that everyone should pay attention to. After all, if we don’t learn from its lessons, repeating them seems more than likely.

Not long ago, it seemed impossible for anyone to seriously ask the question “Who was Hitler”? And yet, I’ve heard this more than once recently. Even if you’re not new to WW2 history, this book provides plenty of detail on a wide range of significant incidents, the details of which can be easy to forget. Overall, whether you want to educate yourself on WW2 history or simply refresh your memory, this volume is an excellent choice. I am giving this book five out of five stars.

I have always been passionate about historical readings, those that manage to mix facts that really happened with fictional nuances in a sublime way. In this case, the author portrays a horrendous time in the history of mankind as it was WWII and Hitler's regime, but he does it with so much grace that one cannot stop reading it.
The narrative covers this armed conflict from the attack on Poland to the late 1941 where Japanese forces strike American naval forces at Pearl Harbor.
I absolutely liked the way in which this masterpiece provides a clear and comprehensive understanding of such a complex time and its detrimental impact on the world.

As most of us probably do, I had close relatives fight in World War II. Listening to my grandfather talk about those battle days when I was younger, I tuned most of it out. But as I got older, I realized the significance of what he was saying, but by then he was gone. This book, "The Fight of Their Lives: A 21st Century Primer on World War II" by Andy Kutler, helped me remember some of the stories he told, and get a better grasp for what he must have gone through. It's a must-read for anyone who wants to avoid repeating the mistakes of history and honor those who fought in that time.

A good documentary of WW2 with great explanations of some of the major battles and political intrigues. However. I was disappointed with the author over-looking the major contributions of the US Navy submarine force and how they strangled the Japanese supply lines. Other than that, it is a good read that is easily understood.

This book is very easy to read in segments as it is set up in an encyclopedia format. It is a comprehensive guide to WWII. It is designed to appeal to the widest possible audience. Some of the subjects covered are both theaters of the war, time frames, battles, and the home front. The book is easy to read. I learned some facts I hadn't been aware of. The author sticks to the facts which I appreciate. I received an Advance Review copy and am leaving a review voluntarily.
