"Marry or lose your inheritance." A commitment phobic heir in Detroit, Michigan faces the ultimate challenge from his powerful grandmother and family company CEO in this charming, irresistibly fun and flirty new contemporary romance from award-winning author Elle Wright.
Wesley Batchelor is desperate for an image reboot—stat. A mysterious social media influencer keeps revealing his many reckless romantic liaisons, putting everything Wesley has worked so hard for at stake. Worse, he’s in deep trouble with his grandmother and Batchelor Enterprises boss, Joyce, his one and only true cheerleader. So he’s stunned and relieved when his gorgeous ex, private detective Albany Keyes, is recruited to track down the leaker . . .
All Wes has to do is keep a cool-headed professional distance. Easy, right? Until the incendiary passion between him and Albany suddenly reignites. And he realizes he wants more from her—just like always . . .
For Joyce's sake, Albany reluctantly accepts the assignment to aid Wes. After all, she needs the money to regroup after a disastrous divorce. But this time, she's going to call the shots. She doesn’t need her heart re-broken by the only man she's ever loved. Yet she soon finds their differences are drawing them together again. And again. And again. Now, with both their careers and their hearts on the line, can they risk another chance on each other—this time, for keeps?
Born and raised in Southeast Michigan near Ann Arbor, Elle learned the importance of reading from her mother. It was also her mother who, later on in her life, gave Elle her first romance novel: Indigo by Beverly Jenkins. From that moment on, Elle became a fan of Ms. Jenkins for life and a lover of all things romance. An old journal she wrote back in college became her first book (which she still wants to publish one day).
⭐ Audiobook Review: ALC from Netgalley! Narration by Adenrele Ojo & Sean Crisden
Elle Wright knows how to write a messy man and a woman who deserves better, and The Ex Dilemma leans into that dynamic in a way that feels real, frustrating, and addictive.
Wesley is… a disaster. A fine disaster, but still a disaster. He’s in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons...clubbing, partying, sleeping his way through half the city, and doing everything except acting like the heir to the empire he’s supposed to be running. He’s grieving, he’s spiraling, and he’s not even pretending to hide it. You can hear every bit of that unraveling in the narration.
Then there’s Albany. Smart, grounded, resilient, and just trying to get her investigative business off the ground without getting sucked into anybody’s family drama. She wants to build her name, not get tangled up with the wealthy, chaotic family she’s been hired to look into. But the job is too good to pass up… and the pull of Wesley her first love, her first heartbreak ..makes everything even messier.
Their dynamic is fun, tense, and full of that “we should not be doing this but here we are again” energy. Albany tries so hard to keep her distance, but Wesley’s grandmother is basically playing chess with their lives, and Albany ends up right back in the orbit she swore she’d never return to.
The audiobook itself is an easy, engaging listen. Adenrele Ojo is one of my absolute favorite narrators, and she does what she always does—pulls you straight into the character’s emotional world. If she’s narrating, I’m already locked in. Sean Crisden balances her well, especially with Wesley’s messier edges.
If you like: - second‑chance romance with real emotional stakes - childhood friends to lovers to strangers to lovers again - a hero who has to get his entire life together - a heroine who refuses to lose herself in someone else’s chaos - meddling elders who know exactly what they’re doing
…this one is worth the listen.
It’s messy, it’s heartfelt, and it’s the kind of story where you find yourself talking back to your audiobook like they can hear you.
A big thank you to NetGalley, Kensington Publishing and Elle Wright for the opportunity to read this ARC, in exchange for my honest review.
The Ex Dilemma's cover intrigued me and caught my attention and curiosity. I normally don't believe in second chances, but, Elle Wright has made me into a believer now. Ms. Elle's way with words and her world building is awesome. The flow was perfect, never felt rushed. Also also, Ms. Elle adds just the right amount of drama, comfy-coziness, and laughter.
The Ex Dilemma is a fast-paced second-chance romance packed with family drama and a modern mystery twist. When a messy influencer starts exposing Wesley online, his first love, Albany—now a private investigator—is pulled back into his life to uncover the truth. The social-media angle added tension, the family drama raised the emotional stakes, and the chemistry came through with a few well-timed, steamy moments. The romance felt a bit rushed, and once things heated up, the mystery faded into the background—I wanted more buildup to the final reveal. Still, it was a fun, entertaining read with a strong premise, and I’d happily pick up more from this author.
Thank you Net Galley and Kensington Publishing for the advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.
I really wanted this one to work for me… but no matter how hard I tried, we just never clicked.
Despite my best efforts, I found myself having to rewind and repeat sections multiple times because I kept losing the thread of the story. The biggest hurdle, though, was the lack of chemistry between our protagonists—and for a romance (even one blended with mystery), that’s kind of a dealbreaker. When the secondary characters consistently outshine the main couple, I’m left wanting more and feeling disappointed instead of invested.
I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Adenrele Ojo and Myles Washington, and both did a solid job. The pacing was good, the sound engineering was strong, and technically everything worked… but even great narration couldn’t make up for the missing spark.
At the end of the day, this just may not have been my book. I can see how others might connect with it differently, so I’m not saying don’t read it—but if you’re someone who thrives on chemistry and emotional tension, I’d recommend going in with cautious expectations.
Sometimes a book can do everything right on paper and still fail to make your heart care—and unfortunately, that was the case for me here.
I was fortunate to receive a complimentary ALC from Dreamscape Media via NetGalley, which gave me the opportunity to share my voluntary thoughts.
A second chance. Family drama. A little mystery. And some chemistry. This story had a lot going on. Angry, hurt, and emotional are all the feelings Albany had going at once and was going to let her teenage heartbreak keep her from getting her money. Albany and Wes have history, chemistry , and a job to do. There are a lot of people in this story and a lot of things going on. The only thing I did not like was the way it took so long for us to find out why Wes left and why it was such a big secret. I enjoyed this story and watching Albany be at war with her self it was funny. I recommend this book if you like a second chance romance that gives soap opera vibes.
I love a second chance romance but this one did not do it for me. The social media drama ended weird to me and I just couldn't truly connect with the why. I also didn't care for the romance between the main characters. The story was still well written but I felt it left out a lot. It built all this family drama then fell flat at the end.
The Ex Dilemma delivers exactly what I come to Elle Wright’s books for: emotionally messy characters, grown-folk drama, and a romance that sits right on that addictive line between tension and tenderness. Albany and Wesley’s dynamic is complicated in the best way — full of history, hurt, and that magnetic pull they can’t shake even when they probably should. Wright does a great job layering their backstory so the stakes feel real, and the added family pressure (Joyce!) only tightens the screws.
Albany is a standout — smart, grounded, and determined even when vulnerability threatens to crack through. And Wesley… whew. He’s the kind of flawed but sincere hero who frustrates you and wins you over almost in the same breath. Their chemistry is undeniable, and the emotional payoff hits.
If you like second-chance romance with depth, family complications, and characters who feel fully lived-in, this one is absolutely worth the read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Update: Original rating 3 stars. New rating 5 stars. What made the difference? The audiobook. Listening to this book made all the difference for me. It's as if I read a totally different story and enjoyed every minute of it. Everything I wanted after reading the ebook I got in the audiobook. I previously said this wasn't a favorite by this author, well good thing we can always change our minds because this most definitely is a favorite. I loved the characters, the story line, the mystery and of course the spice.
The Ex Dilemma is a second chance romance with a little mystery. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and was quickly drawn into the mystery around the blogger. The MCs didn't quit have the connection I wished for. Their conversations were repetitive throughout the story. The spicy scenes were a blur with how fast they came and went.
My biggest disappointment was the conclusion of the blogger story arc. The revelation didn't seem to make sense and there was no real consequences. There was so much potential here but ended up being a missed opportunity.
Overall, the story was good but with a few changes it could have been even better. Although not a favorite, I still enjoy the authors writing and will continue to read her work.
Thank you NetGalley, Dreamscape and Elle Wright for the ARC. I am voluntarily leaving a review.
For a book built around one of the hardest romance tropes to pull off—a second-chance love story—Elle Wright absolutely nailed it. Wesley and Albany’s journey is heartfelt, mature, and beautifully messy in all the right ways.
The emotional tension between them feels lived-in, not manufactured, and the “who-done-it” thread kept me guessing straight through to the reveal (and yes, I was wrong). The mystery never overshadows the romance; it enhances it, deepening both characters’ stakes.
Wright’s writing is confident and tender, balancing humor, heartbreak, and genuine heat. This is a story about forgiveness, trust, and choosing love again after everything that went wrong—and it sticks the landing.
This one isn’t just an enjoyable ARC; it’s a buy-on-release kind of book. Standing ovation from me. 👏🏾
📚✨ Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the ALC 📚✨
This story is set in Detroit and follows Wesley Batchelor, a charming heir whose reputation is being dragged by a mysterious social media influencer named Miss Tea. To make matters worse, his powerhouse grandmother, Granny Joyce, is the CEO of Batchelor Enterprises and has issued a ultimatum..........marry or lose your inheritance.
Albany Keyes is a private investigator and Wes’s first love. They had a devastating breakup as teenagers, and Albany is still healing from a recent, messy divorce. Granny Joyce actually hires Albany to find the person leaking Wes’s secrets. This forces Albany and Wes to work together, which is why their chemistry and constant bickering were so stressful!
My Thoughts 💭
Albany and Wes were stressing me out. Their constant back and forth and the weight of their past made me want to shake them both at times. Watching them navigate the scandal of the social media influencer Miss Tea while trying to keep a professional distance as private investigator and client was almost too much 😫
Bosslady Granny Joyce didn't play any games with her grandkids. She was a force to be reckoned with and I loved how she commanded every scene she was in. Her ultimatum to Wesley about his inheritance was such a bold move that set the whole plot in motion 👑
There was a pain surrounding the family dynamics. I wanted Albany's father to step up and be her Dad because there is a difference. That distinction between a biological parent and someone who actually shows up for you was so clear in this story and tugged at my heart 💔
My final takeaway is that this is a powerful story about growth and setting boundaries. I loved how the author balanced the steamy romance with real life issues like professional integrity and emotional healing. It is not just a simple love story but a look at how your past can either haunt you or help you build a better future. If you enjoy stories with high stakes and deep emotional roots then this is definitely for you 🌟
🎧 Audiobook Experience 🎧
The audiobook was also a great experience because the narrators, Adenrele Ojo and Myles Washington, did an incredible job of bringing the tension to life. Hearing the emotion in their voices made the family drama feel even more personal and raw. If you enjoy immersive storytelling that makes you feel like you are right in the middle of the drama.
My first read by Elle Wright, but it shall not be my last. I enjoyed reading this second romance that has some elements of a cozy mystery in it too. Albany (formerly of the FBI and now a PI) is recently divorced and broke due to her cheating husband and is hired by her former best friend/ex-boyfriend’s media mogul grandmother to find who is behind the gossip page that is reporting on all of Wesley’s business. Wesley works for the company and has not had an easy life due to issues with his father, and then later his father’s death, which causes him and his family to go into hiding. Since then, he has been living up to his last name, constantly rotating women, and just being an all-round Playboy socialite. You know the rich guy who finds happiness in a bottle and between legs. But for Wesley, this is all just a coping mechanism. Albany is the one that he let go of and fumbled his biggest mistake in letting her go and hurting her as a teen. Now that his grandmother has hired her to find out who is behind this mess, he is determined not to let her go again and also prove that she can trust him, but it’s not easy along the way because there are constant stories being reported by Ms. Tea. While we’re not trying to find who committed a murder per se, we’re definitely trying to find out “whodunnit.” Who is behind this gossip page that keeps spilling Wesley’s tea? Is it his uncle who hates him or a vengeful hook-up? Then on top of that, his grandmother gives an ultimatum that they must find spouses. Now that fact is honestly the last thing that is on Wesley’s mind (or is it) because he is set on winning Albany back. Albany does not make it easy for him and part of her battle is if she can trust him but when she finds out the reason about why he ghosted her when they were so much younger, she softened to him somewhat. The book was pretty easy to get through, and if you or someone who likes books with intrigue, spice, Second Chance romances, family drama, and celebrity gossip. Then you will enjoy this story. The story also set up many other stories that could follow with the other grandchildren and friends in the circle . Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for this ARC.
When your family is so chaotic that your grandmother demands you get married before she dies, and then immediately hires your first love and high school sweetheart to work for her the very same day, it is absolutely giving matchmaking and second chance romance of a lifetime.
After disappearing without a word decades earlier, Wes is forced to come face to face with the only woman he has ever truly loved. Albany, now a private detective recovering from a painful divorce, is reluctantly pulled back into Wes’s world through a career opportunity she desperately needs. Being forced into close proximity with the man who broke her heart as a teenager sets the stage for a reunion filled with unresolved pain, simmering chemistry, and long buried feelings.
This novel is a beautiful first installment in the Batchelor family series and is ultimately a story about grief, healing, and forgiveness, with just the right touch of mystery woven throughout. Wes is navigating the loss of his father, deeply toxic family dynamics, and the weight of expectations placed on him by a powerful legacy, all while holding onto a fragile hope that Albany might still have a place in his life.
Elle Wright did an incredible job balancing the contemporary family drama with the tense, slow burn rekindling between Wes and Albany. Both characters never truly healed from their abrupt teenage breakup, and you can feel the depth of that loss in every interaction. Their chemistry builds in a way that feels earned, emotional, and satisfying. The climax of this story delivered a much needed emotional exhale that had me sitting with my feelings in the best way.
And whew. Discovering who the villain was in this story had me cussing out loud. Absolutely perfect casting for the role, even if it hurt a little.
I would highly recommend The Ex Dilemma to anyone who loves messy family drama layered with romance, betrayal, second chances, and possibly deathbed ultimatums. The jury is still out on that last part.
Thank you to Elle Wright, Dreamscape Media, and NetGalley for the advanced copy of this audiobook and for trusting me with this story. This was an easy five star read that I will gladly be recommending to all of my Bookies and Besties.
The Ex Dilemma follows Albany and Wesley, but the very first thing that grabbed me wasn’t the romance, it was the grandmothers. They were hilarious! From the start, I noticed the side characters brought so much personality, and warmth to the story, and that ended up being one of its biggest strengths for me.
We’re following Wesley, who is the target of a gossip blog posting damaging things about him, and Albany, his ex-girlfriend from way back, who is now a private investigator and has been hired to uncover who’s behind the gossip blog. There's a lot happening in this book, it almost feels like a mini sitcom. It's so entertaining that I didn't always notice where a bit more depth could have been added because I was having fun reading it.
That said, once I finished the book, I did find myself wanting more depth in the romantic connection between Albany and Wesley. I would have loved to understand what truly connected them beyond a childhood crush. And as adults, I wanted to see more moments of them just being together outside of sex or tension. I saw the friendship, I wanted to see what made them more than that. I definitely feel they deserved a second chance, and could see where they were once friends. But I wanted to see what made them more than that.
Where the book really shined for me was the the mystery itself and the family drama. I was genuinely curious about who was behind the gossip blog, and when the reveal came, I was shocked! I wish there had been more aftermath once everything came together, but the journey there kept me hooked the entire time.
This book was fun to read, I couldn’t put it down and I'm laughing thinking about some of the scenes. If you’re in the mood for a romance mystery that’s fun, full of laugh out loud moments, family drama, and rekindling an unfinished love, read it!
The Ex Dilemma by Elle Wright starts a new series with a second chance trope. The book begins with teens in love. Sixteen years later, Wesley Batchelor just loves them and leaves them, and his personal life is a mess. His grandmother is fed up with his shenanigans that are publicized on a social media site by “Ms. Tea,” and wants him to get his act together. Wes’s first love from all those years ago, Albany Keys, is newly divorced, financially strained thanks to her con artist ex-husband, and back in town after starting a PI agency. She’s hired by Wes’s grandmother to uncover the identity behind “Ms. Tea”.
When Albany comes face to face with Wesley for the first time in sixteen years, she tries to keep things professional. Wes and Albany are forced to work together by their grandmothers, who know exactly what they’re doing. It took years for Albany to get over Wes leaving, and all the old emotions: hurt, anger and lingering love came rushing back. She doesn’t like him, but she doesn’t not like him either. Wesley is still tall, dark, has intense light brown eyes and is still beautiful to her. The connection is still there. When Albany finally gives in to those long-buried feelings, it’s clear that Wes is no longer the boy she once loved. He’s a grown man now, `and there are spicy scenes to prove it!
The Ex Dilemma is a strong start to this new series. One of Elle Wright’s strengths is supporting characters, from Albany’s best friend Bri and Bri’s sister Kayla to Wesley’s sister and cousin and of course the grandmothers. Grandma Joyce is more regal. Grandma Liv was probably off the chain in her day and will throw hands if needed! There is a connection with the original Mr. Black Detroit. Let’s just say that the Granny’s have a life too! There are hints on who’s story will be next, and I look forward to the continuation of the series.
This book really surprised me. It took me at least 4 chapters to be fully invested in the story, but when I did, I couldn't put it down. Albany and Wes's story was complicated. Wes broke her heart when they were 16, and she hasn't forgiven him. When these two are forced together by Wes's grandmother to help find the identity of an influencer who is hell-bent on destroying Wes's reputation, old feelings resurface. Albany fought her feelings every step of the way. She was adamant that she wasn't gonna fall for him again just to end up heartbroken. It was quite hilarious seeing her go back and forth with what she wanted. Wes wasn't letting upon Albany either during her time of confusion. He took everything she threw at him and didn't stop pursuing her.
I loved the banter between these two. I was smiling every time Albany called herself getting mad at Wes because that was her self-preservation method. Once Albany stopped fighting and they actually connected, I almost cheered. Seeing these two find their way was my favorite part of the story. The side characters were fun as well. They gave good advice but also left room for them to have a story. I really need Bri and Hendrix's story ASAP. Those two were like oil and water, but they worked. Kay and Erica's story will be interesting as well because they both like Albany's brother Moses.
The identity reveal of Ms. Tea had me shocked. The whole time reading this story, I thought I knew who it was, but I was completely wrong. I never suspected who it was revealedto be. If more books are to follow, I need Ms. Tea to continue the messiness. Without Ms.Tea I don't think Albany and Wes would've found their way back to each other.
The cover of “The Ex Dilemma” is gorgeous. I loved the simple binocular design and how it frames Albany and Wesley, it immediately set the tone for a story with romance and maybe a hint of intrigue.
I went in expecting to enjoy a second-chance romance with a stronger mystery thread, especially with Albany being a private detective and the setup involving a social media leaker. While that plot point is there, I was surprised by how little we actually see of Albany’s investigative work on the page. The story leans much more heavily into the rekindled attraction than the sleuthing, and I kept wishing the mystery had been a bigger part of the experience.
My bigger issue, though, was Wesley. I never fully got past how angry I felt about him leaving Albany without even the smallest goodbye, and that frustration followed me through most of the book. I also struggled with the emotional foundation of the reunion. Albany repeatedly talks about how much she’s changed, but it felt like she fell back into “I love you” territory without truly getting to know who Wesley is now, after all that time and all that change. For me, the relationship ended up feeling more driven by physical chemistry than by the slower, sweeter rebuilding of trust and friendship that makes a second-chance romance really land.
I did appreciate the long engagement at the end, which helped it feel a bit more grounded. Overall, there were elements I enjoyed, but I wanted more balance between the romance and the mystery, and more emotional repair on the page before the relationship felt convincing.
Thanks for the ARC from Dreamscape Media and NetGalley.
This second chance romance has a different an interesting plot. Wesley and Albany were together as teenagers and they shared a special moment together but he left her heartbroken when he disappeared. Now 16 years later, she is asked to use her position as a P.I. to find out who is airing out his dirty laundry across social media while trying not to fall for him again in fear of being hurt again. The more time they spend together trying to figure out the mystery the more they reminisce on what they had in the past and he is able to explain what happened all those years ago. Of course one thing leads to another and they cross the line but he has to work hard to show her that he can be trusted since she has also been through problems in her adult life as well.
The book did start a little slow for me but it picked up once Albany and Wesley started working together which wasn't too far into the book. It kept me engaged in trying to find out who the mystery person was posting on social media and there were a few suspects I had early on. Once the person was revealed I was a little surprised but then I thought about it and said that makes sense. Albany's father was a hot mess and it would have been nice if he stood up for her a little more when it came to his wife, her stepmom. I enjoyed the two grandmother's in the book. It was nice watching their friendship and how they cared so much for Albany as if she were their own. The ending was nice too the way everything came together the way it did.
The Ex-Dilemma is a pleasant, slow‑burn second‑chance romance that kicks off Elle Wright’s Batchelor Life series with heart, humor, and just the right amount of emotional tension. I really enjoyed diving into Albany and Wes’s story—two people clearly at crossroads in their lives who get thrown back together when Albany is hired to uncover the identity of the mysterious “Miss Tea.”
Wright does a great job developing both characters: Albany is determined to keep her guard up after past heartbreak, while Wes is trying hard to rebuild his image and regain the trust of the one woman he’s never quite gotten over. Their chemistry simmers from the start, and the push‑and‑pull between them feels authentic, especially as old feelings resurface in close proximity.
The secondary cast adds a lot of charm, especially the grandmothers, who are an absolute hoot and bring levity to the heavier emotional moments. The blend of family pressure, personal growth, and rekindled desire makes this a satisfying beginning to the series.
I enjoyed watching Albany and Wes fight their way back to forgiveness and something deeper.

Advanced Audio Review 1-26-26
I also listened to an advance audio copy, and the narration by Miles Washington and Adenrele Ojo really elevated the story. Both narrators are engaging, expressive, and bring a natural rhythm to Albany and Wes’s dynamic. Their voice inflections are spot‑on, and the character distinctions are clear without ever feeling exaggerated. They make the emotional beats land and add an extra layer of connection to the characters. A great audio experience overall.

The Ex Dilemma is a fast-paced second-chance romance layered with family drama, social-media scandal, and a touch of mystery. From the moment I picked it up, the cover alone pulled me in—and the story delivered an entertaining blend of love, betrayal, and unresolved pasts.
The novel follows Wesley, whose carefully curated public image begins to unravel when a gossip account starts exposing him online. As his reputation crumbles, his grandmother hires a private investigator to uncover who is responsible. Enter Albany—his ex and first love—now working as that very investigator. Their reunion is charged with history, tension, and emotions neither of them truly buried.
Elle Wright does a great job capturing messy characters who feel human and flawed. The social media angle adds a modern edge, heightening the stakes and showing how quickly rumors can reshape a life. The chemistry between Wesley and Albany brings warmth and sparks, especially in their emotionally layered scenes together.
While I enjoyed the premise and pacing, I found myself wanting deeper development from both the main characters and the supporting cast. The romance unfolded quickly, and once the emotional connection reignited, the mystery element faded into the background more than I expected. I would have loved a slower buildup toward the final reveal to fully savor the suspense.

Meet Wesley Batchelor: commitment-phobe, heir to a family empire, and social media’s favorite hot mess express. Poor Wes can’t keep his escapades out of the headlines, thanks to a secret online nemesis—proof that karma not only has Wi-Fi but probably a ring light, too. Enter Joyce, his firecracker grandmother and CEO, who gives Wes an ultimatum only a grandma could deliver: get your act together or kiss your inheritance goodbye.
But wait, there’s a plot twist worthy of a reality show—Wes’s ex, the whip-smart, newly single private investigator Albany Keyes, is on the case. She’s there to save his reputation, but who’s going to save their hearts? Sparks (and witty one-liners) fly faster than a Detroit piston as Albany and Wes try to keep things strictly business, but their chemistry has other plans—and so does Joyce.
Wright’s writing is as sharp as Albany’s detective instincts and as fizzy as a champagne toast at a Batchelor family wedding. Every page is packed with laugh-out-loud banter, steamy tension, and the kind of grand romantic gestures that will have you texting your ex (don’t do it!).
If you love your romance with a dash of corporate chaos, meddling matriarchs, and second-chance shenanigans, “Marry or Lose Your Inheritance” is your next must-read. Five stars and a standing ovation for Elle Wright—she’s delivered the rom-com jackpot! The audiobook delivers a heartwarming performance.
Thank you, Elle Wright, NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for the ARC opportunity.
Albany and Wesley were each others first loves. When they were young, Wes ghosted Albany and disappeared. Many years later, Albany is hired by the family to solve the mystery of who is leaking personal information to the public about Wesley. Will being around each other again reignite those feelings?
I enjoyed this book! I loved that alongside the romance plot there was also a mystery that we were trying to solve of who was the mysterious social media influencer that keeps leaking personal information.
The reason that I marked this down a bit is because I felt as though the romance felt a bit rushed. I didn't really understand why they had this huge connection since all I saw from them at the beginning was heartbreak. I wish I understood their connection a bit more. In addition to that, once the romance began, we didn't really see much of the investigation. I loved being able to see the romance but I think there were things happening in the background that I wish we would've seen so the big reveal at the end could have had more clues leading up to it.
Overall I liked this book and it's super cool that this is written by a Michigan author!
Thank you to the mARCup Program for the Advanced Copy in exchange for my review.
This was a fun, messy, second-chance romance with just the right amount of chaos. Wesley Batchelor is out here trying to save what's left of his image while a mystery influencer is airing out his romantic flings and dirty laundry. His whole career and livelihood is on the line because his granny has had enough and basically telling him to get it together or get the boot. She hires a PI to help solve the mystery of who this Ms. Tea blogger is but the gag is, it's his ex, Albany, who he hasn't seen in 16 years. Enter Albany Keyes, private detective, gorgeous, smart, and absolutely not trying to fall back into old patterns… even though the chemistry between them is still loud. loved the tension between Wes and Albany, but after a while the push and pull started to feel a bit drawn out. It took up about 90% of the story, while uncovering who Ms. Tea was felt more like the remaining 5%. I really wished we’d gotten more scenes of Albany in full PI mode, actual investigating, digging, connecting dots and maybe some fun “clue game” moments where she and Wes were piecing things together side by side. That balance would’ve made the mystery hit just as hard as the romance.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Wesley Batchelor has a huge problem: he needs to clean up his playboy act to save his inheritance, and the only person who can help is the one woman he could never keep...his ex, private detective Albany Keyes.
Albany has grown past Wes's antics, but she needs the paycheck. She's focused on hunting an influencer, with a mission to destroy, not rekindle an old flame. Yet, with each close encounter and shared look, the chemistry between them begins to ignite, blurring the lines between professional obligation and undeniable attraction.
"The Ex Dilemma" is an intense and high-stakes second chance at love that explores the challenging journey of a reckless heir determined to prove his worthiness to the only woman who has ever held his heart. Prepare for a whirlwind of workplace drama that intertwines with family complexities, where sharp-witted banter crackles in the air and sparks fly with every unresolved tension.
Oh, and some secondary characters deserve some attention and possibly pave the way for an exciting sequel.
Strengths: The characters were entertaining and it clearly set up storylines for future books with characters readers enjoyed. I really liked the FMC and MMC and appreciated this book was about people in their thirties (we need more adult aged books!). I appreciated the authenticity of the characters. I thought her grandmother was lovely (Joyce was fine…). Although there were a lot of people to keep track of a number of storylines I never felt lost.
Areas of Opportunity: I felt mislead in that I thought I was going to get a marriage of convenience trope based on the description, but it was only second chance romance. I did forget we were solving a mystery at some point in the book. I didn’t like the intimate scene opening the book because they were minors - ew.
General: This was a well written easy read/listen. While there isn’t anything super negative to say about it it also wasn’t a wildly compelling book (i.e., I wasn’t like oh man I can’t wait to get back to that book. It was fine). I’d give it 3.5⭐️
Thank you Dreamscape Media for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This second chance romance follows Albany and Wesley, childhood sweethearts who are forced into proximity 16 years after their breakup. Albany is fresh out of a messy divorce that leaves her with no house and no money. Wes is being harassed online by a celebrity gossip page that keeps posting intricate details about his life. Albany who is a PI is hired by Wes’ grandmother to help uncover who is behind the gossip page and help Wes restore his image. At first Albany is reluctant to take the job but ends up accepting it for the sake of Wes’ grandma but also because she needed a reboot of her own. Then begins a journey of rehashing the past, reopening old wounds and healing. This story is well written and the element of mystery also adds a lot to the reading experience. The book is short and hits the right spots. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and would recommend it you like found family, forced proximity, a bit of mystery and second chance romance.
Title: The Ex Dilemma Author: Elle Wright Genre: Romance Format: Audiobook Narrator: Adenrele Ojo and Myles Washington Star Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐️⭐️ "Marry or lose your inheritance." This is my first book by this author, Ella Wright, and it will not be my last. I really enjoyed myself and forgot I was reading a book! I wasn't bored, nor did my mind wander while listening to this book.I was entertained the entire time. I liked both characters; they both had stuff they needed to work on, but the romance was done so well.
The audiobook is dual-narrated by Adenrele Ojo and Myles Washington. These two narrators know how to work together and create something amazing. I didn't want this book to end. They are both easy to listen to and understand. I listened at 1.75x speed.
The Trope: •Second Chance Romance •Black Romance •Dual POV •Meddling Family •Mystery (Podcast)
The Ending: HEA (Happily Ever After) Would I Recommend: Yes Days Read: 1 days
First, thank you, NetGalley and Dreamscape Media, for the opportunity to listen to this ALC.
The Ex Dilemma by Elle Wright is a second-chance romance with a little mystery. Elle crafted two characters that were each their own brand of messy. The story follows Wesley as he tries to navigate being a part of the Bachelor family and being blasted by a gossip poster, which is damaging his reputation with the public and his family. Enter his ex, Albany, whom his grandmother hired a private investigator to identify as the one damaging her grandson's reputation.
The story drew me in, but I noticed that at times I wanted the main characters and the side characters to have more depth. While I enjoyed that it was an entertaining listen, I felt that I needed more, but I am hopeful that as Ms. Wright continues the series, I will get what felt missed in this story.
The narration was stellar. I always enjoy Myles Washington's and Adenrele Ojo's narration style.
This story was a fun, second-chance romance with just the right mix of drama, heat, and heart. Wesley’s struggle to protect his image felt relatable, especially with the pressure of living up to family expectations, and I loved that his grandmother wasn’t just a background character but a real motivator in his choices. Albany was the standout for me she was smart, guarded, and determined not to lose herself again, which made her push-and-pull with Wes feel genuine.
The chemistry between Wesley and Albany was undeniable, and their history added depth to every interaction. I enjoyed how the mystery element with the social media leaker kept the plot moving while giving them a reason to be thrown back into each other’s lives . Overall, it was an engaging, swoony read about love, growth, and taking a risk on someone who still has your heart. Once again Elle Wright did not disappoint.
Elle Wright’s The Ex Dilemma is a captivating mix of love, legacy, and second chances set against the backdrop of Detroit’s business elite. With her signature blend of humor, heart, and heat, Wright crafts a story that explores what happens when the past and present collide—and when love refuses to fade, no matter how much time has passed.
The novel follows two people whose lives once intertwined deeply but took very different paths. When unexpected circumstances force them back into each other’s orbit, old emotions surface, new tensions rise, and both are challenged to confront what they really want from life—and from love.
Wright balances emotional depth with sharp dialogue and a compelling dose of mystery. The story touches on family expectations, reputation in the age of social media, and the courage it takes to open your heart again after loss.
This was the kind of audiobook that feels like a cosy rom-com marathon — comforting, charming, and over far too soon. Albany and Wesley’s second-chance romance delivers sweet nostalgia, meddling grandmas (the true MVPs), and just enough emotional tension to keep things moving at a breezy pace.
Their chemistry is warm and easy to root for, and the side characters nearly stole the show — to the point where I wanted their stories just as much, if not more. That said, everyone could’ve used a little extra depth. I especially wished the MMCs subplot had more mystery and bite instead of quietly fading into the background.
The dual narration didn’t quite elevate the story either. Both performances were perfectly fine, but a little flat, and the production quality stayed firmly in “serviceable” territory
