Rate this book
The revised SCHOLASTIC DICTIONARY OF SPELLING has been updated with 1,000 new words and an all-new design that will make it the choice for young writers to turn to for an instant spell-check. With a brand new design, 1,000 additional words, and new fun sections like "The Four Longest Words in the English Language" and "The Spelling Words That Made Kids Champions," this is the perfect spelling resource for students. The introduction gives instructions for looking up a word the reader does not necessarily know how to spell, offers more than 150 memory tricks to correct commonly misspelled words, and clearly explains general spelling rules (and their exceptions). Furthermore, to aid pronunciation, each word is divided into syllables with the accented syllable in boldface.

Citation created by: Amanda Daugherty

Type of reference: Dictionary

Call number: 428.1

Description: This dictionary contains words as well as information on how to look up misspelled words, memory tricks to correct commonly misspelled words, and explains of spelling rules.

Content/Scope: The dictionary focuses on commonly misspelled words

Accuracy/Authority: This is the most current version of the dictionary. Scholastic is a well-respected publisher.

Arrangement/Presentation: Words are arranged in alphabetical order.

Relation to Similar Works:
Maxwell, C. (2007). Spell it right dictionary. New York: Berlitz.
This dictionary contains commonly misspelled words along with the correct spelling arranged in alphabetical order.

Timeliness/Permanence: This dictionary was last published in 2006, so it would still be considered timely. Since it is a dictionary of words, it would not have to be updated on a continuous basis.

Cost: $9.99

Rationale for Selection: Most of the time when a student uses a dictionary, they are using it to determine how to spell a word. This will help speed up the process since they do not know how to spell the word correctly in order to look it up in a traditional dictionary.

My first grader discovered "emailing" her older cousins and writing her own stories. Obviously her spelling is atrocious. Thankfully, we discovered this dictionary. It does not give the definitions. It does not have any foul language. Its just alphabetical word lists so a young speller can reference it. Perfect for grade school and perhaps middle school students.
