Demonic Disasters and Afterlife Adventures #1-2.5

Demonic Disasters and Afterlife Adventures Collection 1

Rate this book
Demonic Disasters and Afterlife Adventures features human men learning to deal with troublesome angels, meddlesome grandmothers, or awful exes while finding love with the demons who are destined to be their soulmates. These characters might face an annoyingly corporate afterlife, but there’s plenty of snark, humor, and sweetness to deal with it (and don’t forget the spice—these demons have tails, and they know how to use them)

This collection contains the first two books and novella in the series, along with a 9k bonus story featuring Adam and Minos and a 3.5k bonus featuring Beel and Jon.

Material
A Beginner’s Guide to Death, Demons, and Other Afterlife Disasters
Adam’s day has been a disaster. First, he finds his boyfriend cheating, then he ends up dying in a car crash after his dramatic exit. Luckily, he finds himself in front of the most smoking hot grump of a demon he could imagine. Minos isn’t the optimistic or happy sort, but he can’t help but be caught up in the whirlwind that is Adam, and it isn’t long before Minos decides he just might decide to keep this one. When afterlife bureaucracy wants to return Adam to his designated afterlife, they’re in for quite a shock, because Adam has decided he’s keeping Minos too.

Corporate Retreats, Romance, and A Bonus Story
A 9k bonus short featuring Adam, Minos, and a certain cheating ex from Adam’s past.

A Beginner’s Guide to Mistakenly Summoned Demons and Other Misadventures
His meddling grandmother tricked Gabe into summoning a demon. Thanks Grams. Now Gabe has to figure out how to fulfill the summoning to send the demon back, except he apparently summoned an Infernal King of Hell (who also happens to be the Prince of Lust). Asmodeus is more than a little fascinated with the human who is immune to his powers, and he decides he’s sticking around to help Gabe figure out his sexuality (whether Gabe wants him to or not). If Az happens to get slightly obsessed with his human in the process, who’s going to tell him he can’t keep the guy?

A Beginner’s Guide to the Care and Feeding of A Novella
Meet Beelbufo, the lesser demon who has lived as a pet frog for two decades, and the charming pet shop owner, Jon, who is about to become his unsuspecting frogsitter. When Jon's safety is threatened, Beel can't help making an appearance in his human form. Now Jon's eyeing him with suspicion (turns out his cover story wasn't that great), Gabe and Az are up to their matchmaking antics, and Beel really just wants another kiss with the adorable pet shop owner. If Beel’s meddling family can stop interfering, Jon can stop being so suspicious, and Beel can stop being so scared of outing his true identity, these two might just get their own happily ever after.

Some People Never A Bonus Story
A 3.5k bonus story that features Jon, Beel, and an ex-boyfriend who didn’t learn his lesson the first time around.

I didn't realize this included the first two books and novella from the series. Which I've already read. But it did include a very entertaining short story of Adam's ex boyfriend ending up in Hell which was quite entertaining and new to me.

Review of “A Beginner’s Guide to Death, Demons, and Other Afterlife Disasters” (#1):
1.5/5 …. I almost dropped the series after finishing this one. I think the only reason I didn’t was because I flipped the page and there was a short story there, which changed the tone before the decision to drop it could be cemented lol..

Honestly, the insta-love-let’s-get-freaky-within-almost-moments-of-meeting-each-other was bad enough, but the pervasive, soul-sucking corporate bureaucracy of the afterlife was so goshdamn depressing that it made me want to DNF it multiple times and just quit everything. Real life has enough of that crap, please at least give us a break from it in the fictional afterlife? We’re trying to enjoy a fictional story here and instead it’s implying that even once we kick the bucket, the best we can hope for is more of the same torturous things that cause endless frustrations in life—and it’s not even limited to those who end up in “hell.”

Review of “Corporate Retreats, Romance, and Revenge” short story:
Can’t rate it on it’s own as I don’t recall it as a distinct enough story from the first one, but between it and the epilogue in #1, it provided just enough of a “pallet cleansing” if you will that I continued on to the next one instead of DNF’ing this collection.

Review of “A Beginner’s Guide to Mistakenly Summoned Demons and Other Misadventures” (#2):
2.5/5 …. I liked this one more than the first one. The fact that it was set in the living world as opposed to the afterlife with its office politics probably helped (no constant, soul sucking reminders of bureaucracy in this one). Beyond that, what was nice about this one was the ace representation. While not perfect, I liked that Mae’s approach regarding Gabe’s sexuality helped bring a bit more awareness of the asexuality spectrum to readers who may not necessarily be aware of all the different identities under the ace umbrella.

Using Asmodeus’ inner dialogue, who, as a lust demon, was trying to figure out what made Gabe tick, allowed Mae to explain some concepts to the reader (e.g., demisexuality, reciprosexuality), without making it sound too much like a lesson about asexuality terminology.

On the other hand, while Gabe being unaware of his own demisexuality and potential reciprosexuality may not be an uncommon ace experience, Mae never really brought the knowledge fully to fruition for Gabe, which just sort of ends up perpetuating this idea that it’s okay to ascribe labels to others.

Gabe’s sexuality primarily being addressed through Asmodeus’ inner thoughts also made some of Asmodeus’ comments/actions seem somewhat disingenuous and/or potentially manipulative at first; I think the only reason it didn’t become as big of an issue was because Asmodeus wasn’t depicted as an amoral demon and he’d already made it clear consent was important to him (and I’d argue that manipulating someone into becoming sexually attracted to him by making fake claims to foster an emotional bond would bring them to somewhat dubious consent territory at best).

All of that aside though, this one was more enjoyable. The fact that it paired a powerful lust demon with an asexual/demisexual man helped steer it away from the smut fest orgies you would have probably expected based on some of the talk and comments made by and/or about Asmodeus in the first novella. The pace of the relationship-building was a bit choppy, but it had more of a progression than the first book/novella, and it introduced readers to a bit more of the arc storyline near the end—not much, but enough that I might give the next one in the series a try.

Review of “A Beginner’s Guide to the Care and Feeding of Demons” (#3.5; i.e. Beel’s novella) and bonus story:
2.8/5 … I liked this one. Seeing things through Mr.Frog / Beel’s point of view was interesting. Strangely enough, I found the parts from his POV as a frog the most interesting/entertaining. When he took a human form, it obviously changed the dynamics being the MCs, but I think what I really liked about when he was Mr.Frog was that it allowed for more depth and character development—especially since almost immediately upon their meeting in human form, the emphasis shifted to sexual attraction and sex even though Beel was a complete stranger to Jon. So while I get that it was more of a mini novella, which limits how much development can occur, it still made for a rather sudden shift given they’d essentially just met as far as Jon was concerned.

So all-in-all, even with the shift in dynamics—which settled eventually—it was a fun story. Glad Mae shared Beel’s story with readers.

I'll be honest, I have kindle unlimited and I downloaded this solely so I could read the bonus stories that are included. However, this is a truly brilliant series. It's funny, irreverent and definitely steamy. I have loved all the stories in this series and the bonus stories about Adam and Minos running a corporate team building day with Angels and Demons was hilarious as was the 'snippet' of what happens when Jon's ex disregards Beel's warning to stay away and visits the pet shop. Fingers crossed for more bonus stories as we go.

1.5 for 1st story. 2.5 - 3.5 stars for the others. If I had not bought these stories as a collection, I definitely would have never made it past the 1st one. In fact, it was a real struggle to get through the 1st. For me, it should have been fun. I love sarcasm. I'm fine with m/c's that have no filter.

In trying to figure out the issues, My brain just kept saying I'm not sure how to even be constructive. There was a lack of development to explain reasons and reactions. There was little to no background. The relationship was flat and too insta-everything. At points I was a little confused on the plot which made the slog through even worse. I'm fine with lots of sex and talk of sex etc.... But even with an admittedly juvenile sense of humor, it was more eye roll inducing than funny. With me not feeling the connection of the m/c's or with the m/c's it felt like reading really bad porn.

The rest of the stories were much better in nearly all facets, but still just okay/average. The 2nd full story was probably a 3.5. It was definitely more unique and engaging. It felt more like a story. I actually rooted for the couple. The novella was interesting if only because the uniqueness of one m/c. It was sweet fluff.

Truth be told, I didn't really like Book 1 and 2. Mae's really good at creating engaging characters, but the plot of her first two books were not what her later books are.

HOWEVER, this collection comes with Book 2.5, entitled A Beginner’s Guide to the Care and Feeding of Demons starring Mr. Frog, a.k.a. Beel, and it's an adorable modern paranormal version of the frog prince! This tale alone, redeems this collection and made it worth reading at least Book 2, if not Book 1.

Great collection!

I actually read book 1, 2, and 2.5 before this collection and loved them. I read this collection purely for the two bonus stories so I could see more of Adam and Minos and Jon and Beel. I was not disappointed. They were great additions to the series! I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

I read this collection using the Kindle unlimited app.

Tim and Marcus get their comeuppance.

I hadn’t realised this book had an Adam , Minos novella where they deal with Tim Adams narcissistic ex and a bonus chapter when Jon and Beel deal with Marcus Jon’s ex. So I just read those and I’m glad because Tim needed to be dealt with although I still think Minos’s option was better at least Jon let Beel deal with Marcus appropriately.

So Adorably Amazing!

Love this series and love this author! It is so nice to have low angst paranormal romances to read! The fact that they are also hilarious and feature characters anyone could fall in love with, just makes them all the more satisfying!

Since I'd already read the major stories, I only read Corporate Retreats, Romance, and Revenge and A Beginner's Guide to the Care and Feeding of Demons Bonus Story. Both cute, both wrapping up the evil ex-boyfriends.

I'm not going to lie my absolute favorite part of this entire collection was the novella after Adam and Minos are together. I love love love Cutie and Scowly, and I was hoping so much for Adam's ex to get his karma.
