There are 20 million children and adults in America who have Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD or ADHD). This comprehensive guide gives parents, teachers, pediatricians and mental health professionals the facts and resources they need to effectively deal with ADD. In straightforward language, Dr. Phelan separates fact from myth about this vastly misunderstood condition.
I flew through this book. This book made me 100% certain that my daughter has ADD and I look at her now with a different perspective on how to deal with her behavior. My husband was diagnosed with ADD when he was a child and he has been telling me that he suspects she has it too but I honestly didn’t know much about it. This book opened my eyes.
Good book that started out promising- showing various scenarios that demonstrated how ADD affects everyone, including the person who has it. Overall, it was entertaining and informative. However, I did find the author's constant referral to these kids as obnoxious to be insensitive. After all, they have a diagnosed disability that makes them behave differently from other kids. Would he call kids with cerebal palsy, for example, annoying for walking slowly and holding other people up? Just because one disability is visible and the other is invisible doesn't mean that the invisible disability is any less of one.
This is a good primer for those affected by ADD/ADHD. It has given me good insight on the disorder and what steps to do regarding medication, discipline, and addressing real-life situations for ADD.
So comprehensive! I know, it's in the title. But still, it cleared up much confusion and even gave points of view from various stages of life with ADD.
