I desperately wanted to love this because I love magical girls, with the mysterious thief being one of my favorite subgenres. But the pacing on this was just so off that it ruined the tension and the magic. I do really like the art, especially the way that hair just sort of fills up all available space in the panel, but I can't see myself picking up more of this unless it was on super sale.

Picking on this book feels like punishing a dog for bringing you the newspaper after chewing it up - its adorable fluffy heart is in the right place, but the execution leaves you with a complete mess of a word salad and nothing to show for it.

Positives first - the art is very, very good. Clean, handles the school life stuff and the action parts with equal skill. Miku, the main character, is really great, tons of adorable expressions, and her interactions with Ryujei, her love interest, are cute. The overall plot is Magical Girl 101 by way of the Shojo Manga Drinking Game (take a shot for the not-at-all-mysterious mysterious transfer student and another for ye olde wall slam!), but it gets the job done.

Or it could get the job done, rather, if the actual writing was any good. This whole book feels like watching an anime on fast forward - it’s overstuffed with characters and spends no time developing them in even the most cursory fashion before introducing a new one.

Miku is a kind girl, yay, apparently this teacher we met for five seconds is a witch, now Miku is, now she’s saving the day, now a bad guy does a thing for a reason maybe there are stakes I guess but what are their motivations who cares we need to introduce Miku’s teammate okay let’s see them bond no wait they are already friends after maybe two panels together and who cares time for another character and at this rate there will soon be more magical girls than grains of sand in the desert. It’s a little clunky, is what I’m saying.

Cute interactions aside (and his introduction where Miku mocks him promised so much more here than it delivered), Ryujei also falls victim of one of the most heinous violations of ‘show, don’t tell’ storytelling. He has an ungodly info dump foisted on him early in the story that’s as elegant as throwing a carburetor through a stained glass window. He then just shows up at places and never justifies his status as an ‘ace detective’ (he should try and crack the case of how the hell people in the story are pronouncing lip*s).

The whole time I was reading this it kept reminding me of Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, which also had pretty great art, thieves, magical girls, competitive love interests, and some storytelling that I found pretty wobbly. That said, Jeanne held together way better than this, so where does that leave this series?

I don’t begrudge the time that was stolen from me, but I can’t honestly see myself going for a second volume of this unless I hear that it drastically switches gears to actually develop its characters.

Der Zeichenstil ist so toll und erinnert an die alten Mangas von 1990. Ich liebe es total!😍

Voilà un manga très mignon qui a de faux airs de Sailor Moon (enfin, c’est mon humble avis). Pour tout vous dire, je n’ai pas trop accroché avec ce premier tome. Parce que c’est vraiment trop enfantin à mon goût et que ça plaira certainement aux filles bien plus jeunes. Notre héroïne, va découvrir qu’elle est une sorcière et une voleuse. Grâce à un rouge à lèvres, elle a la capacité de se transformer en Stellar Witch Lips.

Transformée, elle va mettre à mal de vilains méchants. Sa rencontre avec un jeune inspecteur de son âge, qui est bien décidé à la pourchasser, va donner lieu à une pseudo romance qui se met en place doucement. Mais très vite notre héroïne va faire la connaissance d’autres jeunes filles, qui comme elle, sont des sorcières.

C’est bien dessiné, ça va vite, peut-être trop pour moi et les intrigues sont résolues assez rapidement. Le manga est mignon, les histoires faciles à comprendre et suivre, mais franchement, je n’ai pas réussi à m’immerger dedans. Cela manque d’une construction plus complète avec un vrai fond pour me plaire. Ici, tout est trop superficiel à mon goût.

Bref. Je suis passée à côté, mais pas parce qu’il est mauvais, mais parce que je ne suis clairement pas le public ciblé.

I don’t know how you could combine so many elements from popular magical girl series (like Saint Tail, Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne, Wedding Peach, Tokyo Mew Mew, etc.) and make something as bland as this manga. The art is the only real source of depth here.

Süßer Magical Girl Manga, der an viele ältere Magical reihen erinnert, wie Kamikaze kaito Jeanne, Tokyo mew mew, pretty cure, Sailor Moon etc. Der Zeichen Stil ist super schön, die Geschichte sehr einfach aufgebaut. Ich liebe das glitzernde Cover.

If I had a nickel for every magical girl kaitou shojo manga I've read with a weird Christian backdrop, I'd have three nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened three times.

The art is very cute, the romance is cute (detective x thief) but the sentai team is wayyy too big. I wish the author scaled down the team size in exchange for more depth of the main romance (or just drop the team aspect altogether). At a mere 20 chapters, this series squeezes a lot in, but it lacks any and all depth for it. It does have cute moments though and a nice message of self determination.

But why did Kodansha rate it 16+?? This is easily a preteen series with no content worse than Sailor Moon.

Je suis tombée par hasard sur ce 1er tome sur Lirtuel et il m'a donne l'impression que je pourrais être tombée sur une série genre "Sailor Moon" (dont j'adorais l'animé quand j'étais petite)... Et bien si c'est le cas, ça a mal vieilli. Alors certes, on retrouve une jeune fille qui se transforme pour devenir une sorte d'héroïne et puis elle se découvre des aliées avec les mêmes capacité qu'elle, mais c'est bien la seule chose qui a reçu mon intérêt. En vrai, il n'y a pas d'histoire, rien qui me donne envie de tourner les pages... Par contre, il y a des clichés qui m'agacent... Bref, j'ai dû me battre avec moi-même pour ne pas l'abandonner avant la fin tant je me suis ennuyée. Aucune surprise si je vous dit que je ne continuerai pas la série !

Ce manga m'a donné une vibe à la Sailor Moon que j'ai adoré ! J'ai toujours aimé les magical girls alors ça le fait pour moi, bien que je sois consciente que l'intrigue va vite et qu'on ne prend pas le temps de bien connaître les personnages ou les raisons des attaques des ennemis.

Après, ce n'est que le premier tome et ce sera peut-être expliqué par la suite. À voir !
En attendant, j'ai adoré ma lecture et j'ai hâte de lire le deuxième tome.

En plus, j'aime beaucoup les dessins et surtout les expressions de Miku qui sont absolument adorables !

Excellente surprise ! J'avais un peu peur au début car structure de magical girl très basique et je n'étais pas trop sûre du concept "sorcière voleuse"...
Mais au final j'adore cet angle très féminin et glamour, très fun assez différent des autres magical girls. J'avoue que j'aime bien la romance aussi... J'aimerais bien un peu plus de développement aux personnages

Ich habe diesen erste band gekauft, weil ich eine andere Serie von Kotoko Ichi gelesen habe und die Zeichnungen haben mir sehr gefallen. Und hier ist die Coverillu so schön...

Die Protagonisten sind Hexen und sie können auf einem Besen fliegen. Und ich mag das: das war immer mein Traum, seit ich mir als Kind »Die tollkühne Hexe in ihrem fliegenden Bett« angeschaut.

Gute Zeichnungen und nette Hauptfiguren. Ich kann die Serie weiterlesen.

The best part about this was the artstyle, the worst was the fact that the main love interest is a Cop.

No but seriously, I get it, this is *under 160 pages* which is pretty short even for manga standards, so they didnt really have time to expand on all the characters they were introducing or the lore they were building. However i hope now that we've got some basics out the way, the next volumes will upgrade in the writing department.

The beautiful, beautiful art is not going to be enough to hold it above "cute but forgettable" from now on.

Also the love interest is sooo boring. I dont care that he has 190 IQ or something A pretty girl like her should never settle for a boring teenager who's unironically spending his free time working for the police.

Stellar Witch Lips reminds me extremely strongly of Phantom Thief Jeanne, Codename Sailor V, and early Sailor Moon – the lowest points of these, I'm afraid. Very gorgeous, fine art and the most bubbly, sparkly, glorious panels, unfortunately featuring very poor writing. Since episodic stories aren't about an overarching villain, it's about characters, but since 5 characters need to be introduced in less than 200 pages, we have the most shallow understanding of these characters. We barely know their names, let alone personalities; characters are on-screen for perhaps two pages before they're revealed to be "witches," after which you know all there is to know about them.

I don't like that the love interest is a "prodigy" detective HIGH SCHOOLER, I don't like that they just suddenly know how to use magic after transformation and don't struggle at all, I don't like that their transformation outfits look like forever 21 clothes (not even the ones from the display, just off the rack). The pacing is break-neck to kill it all off. It tries to jangle popular magical girl story structures together without fully integrating them into the story properly, and so it just doesn't work. It's more of a mish-mash of magical girl tropes. But the art is complete stunning.

J’avais tellement envie d’aimer ce manga ! 🥲
Bon, le premier de tome de cette série n’est pas mauvais mais il est tellement repompé sur Sailor Moon que c’en est presque gênant (en vrai, ça m’a surtout donné envie de relire Sailor Moon 🤭).
Ce qui m’a le plus embêté c’est que tout va très vite, l’histoire avance à 100 à l’heure sans prendre assez le temps de présenter les personnages, de nous permettre de nous connecter avec elles pour les apprécier. Et j’ai aussi trouvé que le découpage n’était pas toujours pertinent ou efficace ce qui rend certaines scènes pas hyper lisibles.
Cela étant dit, j’ai bien aimé les dessins, c’est fin, c’est beau, ça brille de partout bien que ce soit parfois un peu chargé. En terme d’univers, je trouve que c’est un mix entre Sailor Moon et Sakura, y’a du potentiel.
