Tammy Turtle, A Tale of Saving Sea Turtles, by Suzanne Tate has been a part of my collection of natural science books that I kept in a science reading center in my preschool classroom over the years. It is a short story that tells the life cycle of Lonerhead Sea Turtles from hatching to becoming an adult turtle returning to the beach of its birth to lay eggs for another generation of sea turtles. The illustrations are accurate to the information and very attractive.

This story is about a turtle named Tammy and her life. The story starts when Tammy hatched from and egg and swam into the ocean. She grew big and stong, but one day she thought she was eating a jelly fish but it was actually a plastic bag. Tammy got very sick and washed up on the beach. Humans took the turtles and helper her to grow stong again. Tammy was released again and soon after she came back to the beach to lay her eggs.
This story can be an introduction to talking about how to prevent hurting animals in the wild. The class can talk about how dangerous littering can be to the animals. Then you can start a discussion about what we can do to help, then you can also talk about lessening pollution and conserving resources. This could turn into working on a community project, or a conservention project in the school.

One of the better in this series, in my opinion because it isn't as silly looking/sounding. This has a good simple morale in the story, of keeping our trash where it belongs to protect animals.
